Cardinals @ Red Sox Saturday, 18th June 2022 7pm @ Fenway Park
Hudson 4-3/3.29
Crawford 1-1/5.74
St. Louis Cardinals vs. Boston Red Sox Saturday, June 18, 2022 at 7:15pm EDT Written by Mason Folz
This Saturday the (37-28) St. Louis Cardinals and the (34-30) Boston Red Sox will play game two of this three-game series. The first pitch will be thrown out at 7:15 PM EST inside Fenway Park. This will also be the first series between these two teams this regular season.
The St. Louis Cardinals are coming into this one after winning their previous series against the Pittsburgh Pirates. They stole three out of the four games and looked great on the defensive side of the field. They will need their starting pitching to stay strong if they want to hang with Red Sox in this one.
The Boston Red Sox are entering this one after winning their previous series against the Oakland Athletics. They won two of the three games and looked great on the offensive side of the field. They scored 20 combined runs in the three games that they played. Boston will need their bats to stay hot if they want to take care of business at home.
This game was written/published before last night's results.
The Cardinals Offense is Lethal The St. Louis Cardinals have jumped out to a hot start to begin this 2022 regular season, but they still have a long way to go. They are currently in first place in the NL Central. On the offensive side of the field, they are scoring 4.78 runs per game and hitting .254 as a team. This is the seventh most runs scored per game and the fifth-highest overall team batting average. They have a very deep batting order and they trust any of their players to drive in runs when they have men in scoring position. The Cardinals also have some serious power inside their batting order, as they are averaging 1.03 home runs per game. This is the 16th highest average in the MLB, as they can score multiple different ways. St. Louis can string together hits to score or they can change the game with one swing of the bat. I am also expecting the Cardinals to stay very aggressive once they have reached base safely. They have already stolen 47 bases this season, which is the second-most in the league. They attempt to push their base runners into scoring position as quickly as they can. Watch for Paul Goldschmidt at the plate in this one. He has already hit 16 home runs and he is also hitting .347, which leads his team.
On the defensive side, the Cardinals have been hit or miss this season. They are currently surrendering 3.79 runs per game and they have a 1.28 team WHIP rating. Reaching base against the Cardinals has not been very difficult this season, as this is the 19th highest overall WHIP rating in the league. St. Louis has also been able to rely on their starting pitchers, as they have already recorded 23 quality starts this season, which is the 12th most in the MLB. They aren't being forced to turn to their bullpen early in these games, which has freed up their pitching. I also expect the Cardinals to stay solid in the field, as they have only made 29 fielding errors this season. This is the fifth least amount of mistakes made in the field, as they have done a great job of keeping the ball in front of themselves and knowing where to go to get the nearest out. According to MLB.com, Dakota Hudson will be getting the start on the mound in this one. He has started this season (4-3) with a 3.29 ERA. He has also only struck out 36 batters in the 65.2 innings that he has pitched.
The Red Sox are HOT The Boston Red Sox started this season slowly, but it looks like they might be turning a corner. They are currently in fourth place in the AL East. On the offensive side of the field, they are currently scoring 4.73 runs per game and hitting .257 as a team. This is the ninth most runs scored per game and the fourth-highest overall team batting average. The Red Sox have shown that they can string together hits, they just need to be better when they have men in scoring position. The Red Sox have also realized that they don't have as much home run power as they originally thought. They are only averaging .97 home runs per game, which is the 18th lowest average in the league. I am also expecting the Red Sox to stay fairly conservative once they have reached base safely. They have only stolen 19 bases this season, which is the 23rd least amount of steals recorded. They trust their bats to move their runners into scoring position, as they don't need to risk losing a base runner. Watch for Rafael Devers at the plate in this one. He has provided the Red Sox with power all season, as he has already hit 16 home runs.
On the defensive side, the Red Sox have also been very good this season. They are currently allowing 3.52 runs per game and have a 1.16 team WHIP rating. This is the sixth least amount of runs given up per game and the sixth-lowest overall team WHIP rating. They are making it very difficult for their opponents to reach base safely, which has made it much more difficult to score. Surprisingly, the Red Sox starting pitching hasn't been great to begin this new season. They have only recorded 19 quality starts, which is the 20th most in the league. They have been forced to turn to their bullpen early in these games, which has hurt them. They will need their starter to go deep into this one if they want to hang with the Cardinals. I am also expecting the Red Sox to stay solid in the field, as they have only made 32 fielding errors this season. This is the 13th least amount of mistakes made, as they have done a great job of keeping the ball in front of themselves and making the nearest out. According to MLB.com, Kutter Crawford will be getting the start in this one. He has started this season (1-1) with a 5.74 ERA. He has also struck out 21 batters in the 15.2 innings that he has pitched.
Cardinals at Red Sox Saturday, at 7:15 PM EST Partly Cloudy According to Forecast.io, it's expected to be 59° F with a 0% chance of precipitation and 15 MPH wind blowing left to right in Boston at 7:15 PM EST. Hourly Forecasts: Weather.com Forecast.io

Red Sox, Michael Wacha passed a pretty good test
By Rob Bradford WEEI 93.7 an hour ago
Sometimes it takes a while for people to truly buy in. For instance, in 2013 it wasn't really until late August when the Red Sox took two of three against the Dodgers out in Los Angeles in late August for New England baseball fans to officially start wrapping their arms around that contending team.
Friday night at Fenway Park went a long way toward start the same sort of embrace for this year's edition of the Red Sox.
The 6-5 win over the Cardinals had its caveats. The Red Sox almost blew a five-run lead in the ninth, with Tanner Houck stranding the potential game-tying run at second base. And if the season ended today, the Sox would be on the outside looking in when it comes to the Wild Card race, sitting 1/2 game back both the Guardians and Rays.
But there was something about this win that put a significant dent in the naysayers.
“We're doing a lot of good things," said Red Sox manager Alex Cora. "That last inning, it got interesting but you expect that against them. They play just like us, until the last out. They put some good at-bats, we put ourselves in bad situations to get that 27th out, but overall, we ran the bases well, we played great defense, we pitched well. Like I’ve been saying all along, we have a good baseball team, we do. Where we’re at is where we’re at. We won a lot of games to get to this point. We didn’t start the season the way we wanted and I said it all along, we have to work very hard to get to the point that we are in the conversation and I think we are. We’re playing good baseball. We’re playing really good baseball."
For starters, the Red Sox find themselves a season-high five games over .500. And they reached such heights by beating one of the National League's best starters (Adam Wainwright) and a first-place team (the Cardinals).
When it comes to getting to Wainwright, the four runs put up against the Cardinals' longtime ace matched his season high, raising the righty's ERA to 3.06.
Then there was the punctuation applied by Michal Wacha.
One of the Red Sox' best stories only got better with the starter lowering his ERA to 2.28 by allowing just one run over 5 1/3 innings. It was the sixth time this season he has gone five or more innings while giving up one or fewer runs. He has surrendered two runs or less in nine of his 11 starts.
Simply put, Wacha has officially become one of the best starters in the American League.
Only seven A.L. starters with as many as 11 starters have a better ERA than Wacha, who has struck out 41, walked just 17 and seen the Red Sox go 8-3 in his starts. It has all been a powerful piece of a puzzle that has seen Sox starters carry a 1.87 ERA over their last 16 outings.
Another significant surprise that kept trending in the right direction was reliever John Schreiber, who turned in perhaps the most clutch performance of the night. He first came on with two on and one out in the sixth inning and stranded both runners before pitching a flawless seventh.
In 18 of his 19 outings this season, Schreiber hasn't allowed a single earned run. John Schreiber explains his remarkable success
There were other signs of continued encouragement. Trevor Story's defense. ("I can say that probably he’s the best defensive second baseman in the big leagues," Cora said.) Xander Bogaerts managing three hits for a major league-leading 11th time this season. And Bobby Dalbec's pinch-hit double in the seventh, making him 3-for-7 in pinch-hit opportunities this season.
The Red Sox continue to trend in the right direction, even with an actual good team standing in their way. It was a night worth taking note of.

Story eyes end to skid: 'It's going to happen'June 16th, 2022 Ian Browne Ian Browne @ianmbrowne Story had a big hit yesterday, and just as important, made some great defensive plays. I know Bogaerts and Devers have worked really hard on improving their defense, and I think Story has had a big impact on that as well.

Alex Cora says Boston Red Sox ‘don’t like’ how many times they have been hit with pitches recentlyUpdated: Jun. 16, 2022, 6:33 p.m. | Published: Jun. 16, 2022, 6:31 p.m. By Christopher Smith | csmith@masslive.com BOSTON — Rafael Devers got hit with a 96.4 mph fastball in the elbow during the Red Sox’s 4-3 loss to the Athletics on Thursday here at Fenway Park. It was the same spot Devers was struck Sunday in Seattle. “We’ll see how he feels tomorrow. He should be OK,” Red Sox manager Alex Cora said. It marked the sixth time a Red Sox batter has been hit since Sunday. No kidding. And Devers got hit by a pitch again last night. The best response to that is to come back in your next at bat and get a big knock.
Also, Bogaerts took a pretty good foul tip off of the shin last night. Thankfully, these things have not been keeping our players out of many games. We have to stay healthy and we need to get our starting pitchers back healthy. We have a tough stretch coming up.

How’d Boston Red Sox’s Tanner Houck approach Paul Goldschmidt AB with tying run at second in ninth? ‘Just go right at him’Updated: Jun. 17, 2022, 11:34 p.m. | Published: Jun. 17, 2022, 11:34 p.m. That last pitch to Goldschmidt was right down broadway. Pete Abraham @peteabe · 6h Davis had two outs and nobody on. Now he's allowed a run and leaves with runners on the corners. After the first 2 outs, it looked like it was going to be an easy 9th. The game ended up having way more drama than it had any business having.
Outside of that, it was a well played game by the Sox. Great win.

Sox (35-30) have won 4 of 5 and 12 of 15. I didn't get a chance to comment on the outstanding west coast trip. The Sox typically don't play that well on the west coast. Well done team.

Red Sox, winners of four straight series, seek another against Cardinals FLM
The Boston Red Sox will look to continue to lock up their fifth straight series win as they host the St. Louis Cardinals on Saturday night.
After Michael Wacha got a Friday win against his former team in the opener of the three-game series, the Red Sox will turn to Kutter Crawford (1-1, 5.74 ERA), who has made four scoreless appearances of at least two innings this season, However, Saturday night will mark just his second start of the season and his first career appearance against any interleague opponent.
With Nathan Eovaldi on the injured list due to back inflammation, the 26-year-old Crawford made the most of his opportunity to start last Sunday against the Seattle Mariners, when he allowed just one hit and struck out seven across five scoreless innings. He didn't figure in the decision in the 2-0 win.
"His stuff was really good," Red Sox manager Alex Cora said of Crawford following his last start. "He made some good pitches on two strikes. He was under control, throwing hard."
Crawford's only other career start came in 2021. He will look to follow Wacha's success -- 5 1/3 innings of one-run ball -- from a 6-5 Friday win in which the Cardinals stranded the tying run on second base after scoring four runs with two outs in the ninth inning.
Boston has won 12 of its past 15 games.
"We put ourselves in bad situations to get that 27th out (on Friday)," Cora said. "But overall, we ran the bases well, played good defense. We pitched well. So like I've been saying all along, we have a good baseball team. We do."
Red Sox shortstop Xander Bogaerts extended his hitting streak to a season-long 10 games. Second baseman Trevor Story, whose 44 RBIs lead the team, broke a 1-1 tie with a two-run single in the fourth inning and made outstanding defensive plays.
"(Playing second is) obviously so new to me -- just the angles and everything," Story told NESN. "But honestly, with each night, I'm feeling better and better about it -- trying to be athletic and use my history playing (shortstop)."
St. Louis is slated to pitch Dakota Hudson (4-3, 3.29), a right-hander who has worked seven complete innings in each of his past three starts.
Hudson suffered his first loss since May 3 in his most recent start, allowing nine hits and six runs in a 7-6 los to the Cincinnati Reds on Sunday. He had allowed one or fewer runs in his previous three outings and will look to return to the win column during his first-ever start against the Red Sox.
Hudson threw just 56 of his 95 pitches for strikes but he was able to remain on the mound for the long haul after his defense turned four double plays.
"Just not enough strikes," Cardinals manager Oliver Marmol said after the loss to the Reds. "It's super simple. When he's in the zone, he's really good. When he's not, too many free passes and opportunities for the other team to do what they did."
Hudson could be throwing to a new batterymate as Ivan Herrera was added from Triple-A Memphis on Friday. He is expected to start once before the Cardinals leave Boston after soon-to-be 40-year-old Yadier Molina was placed on the 10-day IL with right knee inflammation.
"He goes about his business in a very serious manner," Marmol said of Herrera. "He cares a ton. ... The key to his arrival is going to be controlling the speed of the game, just slowing it down."
