April 12, 2024 at 7:00 AM Cup of Coffee: Yuten caps big night with game-winning blast
4/12 Cup of Coffee: Three teams were in action on Thursday night, with each coming down to the final at-bat. Greenville walked off with the victory in the bottom of the ninth, while Natanael Yuten starred in Salem's extra-inning victory. Worcester suffered the system's only defeat of the night, surrendering an eighth-inning lead to fall 5-4. Portland was also scheduled to play but the Sea Dogs were washed out for the third time in six games.
-----
Syracuse Mets (NYM) 5, Worcester Red Sox 4 The WooSox fell in a second consecutive one-run defeat after a back-and-forth contest in Syracuse. Richard Fitts turned in a solid start, allowing three runs on six hits in five innings, striking out five without issuing a walk. Luis Guerrero took the losing decision, surrendering a two-run homer in the eighth inning. Eddy Alvarez was the offensive standout, blasting a solo home run in the second and a double in the fourth. Bobby Dalbec also had a solo blast, his first hit of the season after starting 0 for 15 between Boston and Worcester.
-----
Portland Sea Dogs vs. Reading Fightin Phils (PHI), postponed The rain in Reading forced the postponement of Friday's game. They'll try for a Saturday doubleheader.
-----
Greenville Drive 8, Bowling Green Hot Rods (TB) 7 The Drive squandered an early four-run lead but walked off with the victory. Caden Rose started the scoring with a second-inning solo homer, and he closed it with a game-winning single to left field to score Kristian Campbell. Bryan Gonzalez was a key contributor out of the ninth spot, going 2 for 4 with a home run, double, three RBI, and two runs scored. Luis Ravelo also delivered a solo home run, while Ahbram Liendo had a pair hits and two stolen bases.
Juan Daniel Encarnacion was cruising early, striking out four of the first six batters he faced, but he was knocked out of the game after allowing four runs in the fourth. His final line saw him surrender five runs on seven hits, including two home runs, in 3 2/3 innings. He struck out six without issuing a walk. Gabriel Jackson gave up two runs in four innings of relief, and Caleb Bolden went a scoreless 1 1/3 to get credit for the victory.
-----
Salem Red Sox 8, Delmarva Shorebirds (BAL) 4 Natanael Yuten was the story as Salem kept the Delmarva squad winless on the year. The 19-year-old outfielder blasted a three-run homer in the 10th inning to cap off a 3-for-5 night. The Brothers Garcia were again key contributors as well. Johanfran blasted a two-run homer, his first long ball of the season, while Jhostynxon had an RBI double, two runs scored, and two stolen bases. Blake Wehunt made his first professional start, allowing two runs on three hits in 2 2/3 innings. Max Carlson, a 12th-round pick in the 2023 draft, was outstanding in a piggyback role, striking out eight of the 12 batters he faced against just one walk in 3 1/3 hitless innings. The winning decision went to Jojo Ingrassia, who allowed one unearned run in two innings. He struck out five without issuing a free pass.
-----
Player of the Day: Natanael Yuten is off to a solid start to 2024 following his breakout campaign in the Florida Complex League last season. Yuten hit .336/.396/.483 in 38 games with the FCL Sox before struggling in his first taste of full-season ball. His 2024 line stands at .263/.364/.526 through five games. Originally signed to a $400,000 bonus in January 2022 as a free agent out of the Dominican Republic, Yuten is currently the 51st-ranked prospect in the system.

April 13, 2024 at 7:00 AM Cup of Coffee: Mayer goes yard as Sea Dogs win in a blowout
4/13 Cup of Coffee: Following the example from the big club, there were two shutouts down on the farm on Friday night, as Portland dominated Reading, but Greenville was unable to get into the run column against Bowling Green despite four extra-base hits on the night. Marcelo Mayer hit his first home run of the season and was joined in the home run club by teammate Max Ferguson, as well as Jamie Westbrook for Worcester and both Johanfran Garcia and Jhostynxon Garcia in Salem. Worcester dropped a tight decision to Syracuse, while Salem escaped Delmarva, both by identical scorelines.
-----
Syracuse Mets (NYM) 4, Worcester Red Sox 2 Worcester had a 2-0 lead heading into the bottom of the third, but Syracuse put up a three-spot in the frame and added one more for good measure in the sixth. Nick Sogard opened the scoring with an RBI double in the first inning, while Jamie Westbrook tacked on a second run in the Red Sox's next at-bat via the home run. Rob Refsnyder had a two-hit day and the trio represented four of Worcester's five hits. Grant Gambrell was on the mound and pitched the first five innings, surrendering three runs on five hits and a trio of walks, while he struck out five. Justin Hagenman struck out three hitters over two frames, while Lucas Luetge had a clean eighth.
-----
Portland Sea Dogs 11, Reading Fightin Phils (PHI) 0 Zach Penrod, Cody Scroggins and Wyatt Olds combined to throw a four-hit shutout on Friday. Penrod scattered a pair of knocks with zero walks and eight punchouts over five innings of work, while the remaining hits went on Scroggins' tab between the sixth and seventh. Olds walked one and struck out two over a pair of no-hit innings. The score was just 3-0 through six innings, but Portland tacked on three in the seventh and five in the ninth to create a big-time advantage. Marcelo Mayer went deep for the first time in 2024 in the seventh, as did Max Ferguson. Mayer and Ferguson each had a pair of hits, along with Mickey Gasper, while Kyle Teel paced the squad with three base knocks.
-----
Bowling Green Hot Rods (TB) 6, Greenville Drive 0 Luis Ravelo had a pair of doubles at the top of the lineup, but it wasn't enough, as the Drive couldn't scrape a run across despite four extra-base hits as a team. Only two earned runs went on Luis Perales' tab over four innings of work, but five runs scored overall on seven hits, while he struck out four. Cooper Adams performed valiantly out of the bullpen, with four no-hit innings and four punchouts against one walk.
-----
Salem Red Sox 4, Delmarva Shorebirds (BAL) 2 Brothers Johanfran and Jhostynxon Garcia each contributed home runs and multi-hit days, combining to drive in three of their team's four runs in the victory. Stanley Tucker also had a multi-hit day. The scoring was done early as no runs came across after the fourth and Delmarva had just one hit. Johanfran's home run got the scoring started in the first, while his brother followed in the third, proving to be the game-winning run. Salem also scratched a run across in the second. Matt Duffy pitched 3 1/3 innings and allowed both Delmarva runs to score, but Royman Blanco came behind him and contributed three innings of scoreless relief and Isaac Stebens closed it out with 2 2/3 frames of no-hit ball.
-----
Player of the Day: Portland is a stacked crew and showed it offensively against Reading on Friday, but Marcelo Mayer gets the nod as he hit his first home run of 2024 into the Pennsylvania night. It was the 30th of his career and helped extend a torrid start to the new campaign, even if he's just recorded 15 at-bats this year. The fourth overall pick in 2021, Mayer struggled with injury last year but seems to be fully healthy and proving his high prospect ranking, even if he did cut his trademark flow.

April 14, 2024 at 7:00 AM Cup of Coffee: Multi-home run nights for Anthony, Paulino, and Gonzalez
4/14 Cup of Coffee: It was an exciting night with strong performances across the three levels. In Portland, Roman Anthony and Eddinson Paulino hit home runs in each game of the doubleheader. Connelly Early and Bryan Gonzalez were excellent, though that was not enough to will Greenville to victory. Elmer Rodriguez led a tremendous effort for the Salem pitching staff, while Jhostynxon Garcia collected three hits.
-----
Worcester Red Sox @ Syracuse Mets (NYM), PPD (rain) Saturday's game was postponed, with the teams now slated to play a doubleheader on Sunday.
-----
Portland Sea Dogs 9, Reading Fightin Phils (PHI) 2 (Game One) The Sea Dogs launched four home runs in seven innings as they cruised to a victory in the first game of a doubleheader. Nick Yorke started the barrage with a two-run home run in the first inning, and Roman Anthony and Eddinson Paulino followed with home runs in the third inning. Nick Decker capped things off with a three-run home run in the sixth that broke the game open. Anthony finished 2 for 4 with a double, and the announcer stated his home run left the bat at 111 mph. On the mound, Helcris Olivarez struggled through his 1 2/3 innings as he walked five, and Robert Kwiatkowski picked up the win with 2 1/3 scoreless innings of relief.
Portland Sea Dogs 5, Reading Fightin Phils 4 (Game Two) Making his first start of the year, Hunter Dobbins allowed two runs, one earned, over four innings. He did walk five, which is uncharacteristic after showing good control during his professional career. Felix Cepeda came in with two on in the bottom of the seventh to get two outs and earn his first save of the year. Anthony and Paulino went yard again in the second game, while Marcelo Mayer went 1 for 4 with two RBI.
-----
Bowling Green Hot Rods (TB) 10, Greenville Drive 5 Greenville's bullpen fell apart late as the Hot Rods doubled up the Drive. Connelly Early was terrific in a second straight start, firing five innings of one-run ball. He allowed only three hits, walked one, and struck out seven. He is up to 13 strikeouts and two walks in his first nine innings with the Drive. Bryan Gonzalez provided most of the offense, going 2 for 4 with two home runs and four RBI. Drew Ehrhard went 1 for 3 with a home run in his season debut, and Ahbram Liendo went 1 for 4 with a stolen base.
-----
Salem Red Sox 6, Delmarva Shorebirds (BAL) 0 Salem's pitching was dominant, striking out 14 as they shut out Delmarva. Elmer Rodriguez shook off a rough first start of the year to strike out seven and walk one over four innings. Trennor O'Donnell did not allow a baserunner over two innings in his professional debut, and Denis Reguillo finished off the shutout by striking out four over the final three innings. Jhostynxon Garcia had three of Salem's eight hits as he went 3 for 5 with a double and a stolen base. Natanael Yuten and Andy Lugo added two singles, with Lugo adding a stolen base. Miguel Bleis was held hitless, but he did turn two walks into his third and fourth steals of the season.
-----
Player of the Day: Roman Anthony went 3 for 7 with two home runs, a steal, and a walk across Portland's two games on Saturday. The power surge pushed his season OPS to 1.093 as the system's top prospect has gotten off to a hot start in Double-A. It is still a small sample size, but his numbers through six games this year with the Sea Dogs are similar to the .343/.477/.543 line he put up in 10 games with them last season.

April 15, 2024 at 7:00 AM Cup of Coffee: Paulino, Teel homer as Portland wins fourth straight
4/15 Cup of Coffee: Boston's minor-league affiliates went 3-2 on Sunday. As part of a doubleheader in Syracuse, Rob Refsnyder and Vaughn Grissom continued their rehab assignments while Tyler McDonough shined in his first start of the year for Worcester. Eddinson Paulino (pictured) homered for the third consecutive game, leading a power surge in Portland's win over Reading. At the lower levels, Cutter Coffey broke out in Greenville while Austin Ehrlicher struck out seven of the 13 batters he faced for Salem.
-----
Syracuse Mets (NYM) 10, Worcester Red Sox 5 (Game 1) Despite scoring the first five runs, Worcester fell in Game 1 of Sunday's doubleheader against Syracuse. Brian Van Belle went just 3 2/3 innings for the second straight start, allowing four earned runs on nine hits (three home runs), zero walks, and zero strikeouts. Andrew Politi took the loss in relief after yielding four runs on three hits in the bottom of the fifth. Three members of the WooSox' starting lineup recorded multiple hits. Chase Meidroth went 2 for 4 with an RBI, Mark Contreras went 2 for 4 with a run-scoring double, and Eddy Alvarez went 2 for 3 with a double and run scored. Niko Kavadas homered for the second time this season while Nick Sogard scored two runs. The rehabbing duo of Vaughn Grissom and Rob Refsnyder combined to go 1 for 7 with a run, a walk, and four strikeouts.
-----
Worcester Red Sox 8, Syracuse Mets (NYM) 4 (Game 2) Making up Saturday's rainout, Worcester bounced back in Sunday's series finale. Tyler McDonough led the way offensively by going 2 for 4 with two RBIs and one run scored out of the nine-hole. Nathan Hickey also scored once and drove in two runs as part of a 1 for 2 showing in which he drew two walks. Chase Meidroth went 0 for 1 with one RBI, one run, and three walks on the afternoon. Jorge Benitez took home the winning decision after taking over for Jason Alexander and surrendering just one run on one hit (a solo homer) over 2 1/3 innings of relief.
-----
Portland Sea Dogs 9, Reading Fightin Phils (PHI) 5 It was another productive day at the plate for Eddinson Paulino, who went 2 for 5 with a double, a three-run home run, and two runs scored out of the leadoff spot. Kyle Teel also went yard for the first time this season while Matthew Lugo drilled his second of the year. Though they did not go deep, Marcelo Mayer, Nick Yorke, and Alex Binelas each had two hits. Ryan Zeferjahn pitched well out of the Sea Dogs bullpen, striking out two of the six batters he faced over two scoreless frames to pick up his first save of the season.
-----
Greenville Drive 6, Bowling Green Hot Rods (TB) 4 Cutter Coffey broke out of a 1 for 15 skid to begin the season by going 2 for 4 with a double, an RBI, and two runs scored. Tyler Miller, Kristian Campbell, and Luis Ravelo each had doubles as well while Allan Castro tripled and scored a run. Like Coffey and Ravelo, Miguel Ugueto also had two hits. Nathan Landry picked up the win by scattering one hit and one walk with two strikeouts over 2 1/3 innings of one-run ball. Jonathan Brand and Caleb Bolden combined for three scoreless frames of relief to close things out.
-----
Delmarva Shorebirds (BAL) 4, Salem Red Sox 1 Marvin Alcantara drove in Salem's lone run with a seventh-inning RBI double. Miguel Bleis went 1 for 3 with his first two stolen bases of the season. Luis Cohen fell to 0-2 in two starts after allowing one earned run on three hits, two walks, and five strikeouts over five innings. Austin Ehrlicher gave up two more unearned runs while fanning seven in three innings while Nathanael Cruz got taken deep in the bottom of the eighth.
-----
Player of the Day: After homering in both games of Saturday's doubleheader in Reading, Eddinson Paulino stayed hot by going deep yet again for Portland on Sunday. The left-handed hitting 21-year-old is now batting .292/.346/.708 with three home runs and eight RBIs through six games on the young season. He is currently ranked as the No. 19 prospect in the organization.

April 17, 2024 at 7:00 AM Cup of Coffee: Refsnyder, Grissom rehab, Meidroth homers in Worcester win
Cup of Coffee: Worcester had a big night offensively in their win over Durham. They belted three home runs, including the rehabbing Rob Refnsyder. Dalton Guthrie (pictured), Chase Meidrtoh, and Jamie Westbrook were the big bats for the WooSox. Greenville lost a tough one, while Miguel Bleis and Johanfran Garcia played well in an otherwise disappointing night for Salem.
-----
Worcester Red Sox 7, Durham Bulls (TB) 4 This one had a few key rehabbing players in Rob Refsnyder and Vaughn Grissom, who each went 1 for 3. Refsnyder belted a home run. Chase Meidroth also blasted his first career Triple-A home run in addition to drawing a walk in four trips to the plate. Jamie Westbrook and Dalton Guthrie each had huge nights at the dish. Wesbrook went 3 for 4 with a double and three runs scored, while Guthrie went 2 for 4 with his first long ball of the season and four RBI.
Naoyuki Uwasawa started for the WooSox and battled through five innings to earn the victory. He surrendered six hits and four runs, while punching out five and walking a pair. He was sitting 92-93 MPH with his fastball. Cam Booser continued his dominant start to the season out of the bullpen, tossing two perfect innings. The lefty faced six hitters and struck out five of them. Zack Kelly was also great in relief, picking up a two-inning save with two shutout frames and five strikeouts.
-----
New Hampshire Fisher Cats (TOR) 10, Portland Sea Dogs 2 It was a rough outing on the bump for Wikelman Gonzalez, who did not make it out of the first inning. He gave up six runs (four earned) on three hits and three walks. Wyatt Olds had a solid appearance, tossing 2 2/3 scoreless innings with six strikeouts. He walked four, but did not allow a hit. Alex Hoppe was also very good, allowing no runs on just one hit with three strikeouts in two innings of work. At the plate, Marcelo Mayer went 1 for 4 with a rocket off the right field fence for a double. He now has an eight-game hitting streak. Kyle Teel singled and scored a run on a Blaze Jordan double, and Mickey Gasper roped a solo home run for Portland's only two runs.
-----
Wilmington Blue Rocks (WAS) 7, Greenville Drive 6 Caden Rose, a seventh round pick by Boston last season, led the offense in this one by going 2 for 3 with a two-run triple, a walk, and a pair of runs scored. He now has a .969 OPS on the young season. Eduardo Lopez reached twice with a single and a walk. He drove in a run and scored. Allan Castro and Cutter Coffey added two-baggers as well. David Sandlin struggled a bit in his start, allowing three runs in four innings on three hits and four free passes. He did strike out four. Gabriel Jackson and Cade Feeney each allowed two runs in relief as well.
-----
Lynchburg Hillcats (CLE) 11, Salem Red Sox 4 Johanfran Garcia continued to rake, going 3 for 5 with a double. The catcher is now hitting .387 with a 1.134 this season in eight games. Miguel Bleis delivered the biggest hit of the night for Salem, a three-run double into the gap in the second inning. Natanael Yuten also went 1 for 3 with a walk. Noah Dean's outing did not go well, allowing four earned runs in three innings. He struck out five and walked two. Jojo Ingrassia pitched very well out of the bullpen, striking out four without a walk in 2 1/3 shutout innings. His ERA is still 0.00 on the year in three appearances with 10 strikeouts and no walks.
-----
Player of the Day: Dalton Guthrie's four RBI give him the honor. The 28-year old outfielder was picked up in free agency by the Sox this past winter. Guthrie bounced around in 2023, playing for three different franchises in the Phillies, Giants, and Braves. He was in Triple-A the whole time, where he hit .274 with a .748 OPS.

April 18, 2024 at 7:00 AM Cup of Coffee: Fitts earns first win for Worcester; Mayer extends hitting streak in Portland
4/18 Cup of Coffee: On the same night Tanner Houck threw a complete game shutout at Fenway Park, Boston's minor-league affiliates went 3-1. Richard Fitts impressed and Chase Meidroth stayed hot as Worcester won its third straight. Marcelo Mayer extended his hitting streak and Matthew Lugo (pictured) came through in the clutch in Portland. Bryan Gonzalez homered yet again in Greenville's victory over Wilmington. Blake Wehunt and Jhostynxon Garcia were bright spots in Salem's loss to Lynchburg.
-----
Worcester Red Sox 6, Durham Bulls (TB) 2 Richard Fitts earned his first winning decision for Worcester by spinning his first quality start of the season. The 24-year-old righty allowed just one earned run on four hits, zero walks, and one hit batter with five strikeouts over six innings of work. Fitts finished with 80 pitches (53 strikes) and induced 11 whiffs. Chase Shugart, Justin Hagenman, and Luis Guerrero combined for three innings of one-run ball out of the WooSox bullpen.
It was another productive day at the plate for Chase Meidroth. After hitting his first home run of the season on Tuesday, the 22-year-old infielder went 2 for 5 with a double, two RBIs, one run scored, and one stolen base. Mark Contreras also doubled as part of a 1-for-3 night , driving in one run and scoring another. Nick Sogard went 1 for 3 with one run scored, two walks, and one stolen base out of the leadoff spot. Corey Rosier swiped his first two bags of the year and recorded an outfield assist.
-----
Portland Sea Dogs 5, New Hampshire Fisher Cats (TOR) 2 Matthew Lugo played hero for Portland by going 2 for 4 with a game-winning three-run triple in the eighth inning. Nick Yorke also enjoyed a multi-hit night, as he went 2 for 3 with an RBI single. Blaze Jordan doubled in a run and crossed home plate twice. Kyle Teel scored once and threw out a would-be base stealer while Marcelo Mayer extended his hitting streak to nine games with a fifth-inning single. Phillip Sikes stole two bases and Mickey Gasper was hit by a pitch three times.
Isaac Coffey went five innings in his second start of the season. He allowed two earned runs on five hits and one walk to go along with seven strikeouts. He finished with 80 pitches (51 strikes). Out of the bullpen, Jacob Webb and Robert Kwiatkowski combined to fan three over four scoreless innings.
-----
Greenville Drive 7, Wilmington Blue Rocks (WAS) 5 Juan Encarnacion had an interesting night on the mound in Wilmington. The right-hander allowed one earned run on zero hits, five walks, and five strikeouts over 3 2/3 innings. Caleb Bolden notched his second save of the year, striking out five over three frames of relief in which he gave up two unearned runs. Cutter Coffey and Allan Castro each had two hits, with the former scoring twice and the latter driving in a pair. Kristian Campbell also had two RBIs before leaving the game in the top of the fourth. Bryan Gonzalez went deep for the fourth time in his last four games.
-----
Lynchburg Hillcats (CLE) 7, Salem Red Sox 2 Blake Wehunt went three scoreless innings in his second start of the season for Salem. The 23-year-old righty allowed one hit and three walks while striking out four of the 13 batters he faced. Jhostynxon Garcia led the way offensively by going 2 for 3 with a walk and a pair of run-scoring singles. Marvin Alcantara and Natanael Yuten each had two hits as well. Miguel Bleis went 1 for 4 with a double and one run scored out of the leadoff spot.
-----
Player of the Day: Matthew Lugo proved to be the difference maker at Hadlock Field on Wednesday. The 22-year-old is off to an encouraging start with Portland this season, going 5 for 16 (.313) with one triple, two home runs, five RBIs, two runs scored, one walk, and six strikeouts through five games.

April 19, 2024 at 7:00 AM Cup of Coffee: Penrod leads a Portland shutout; Yuten drives in three
4/19 Cup of Coffee: With Worcester rained out, the attention was on Portland in its matinee with New Hampshire. Zach Penrod (pictured) was excellent again for the Sea Dogs, while Roman Anthony and Eddinson Paulino stayed hot at the plate. Jhostynxon Garcia and Johanfran Garcia played well again for Salem, while Natanael Yuten added a bases-clearing double.
-----
Durham Bulls (TB) @ Worcester Red Sox, PPD (rain) Thursday's game was postponed and will be made up as part of a doubleheader on Saturday.
-----
Portland Sea Dogs 3, New Hampshire Fisher Cats (TOR) 0 Zach Penrod led the shutout effort with some help from Ryan Zeferjahn. Penrod went the first 5 1/3 innings, allowing only one hit and three walks while striking out six. He tallied 16 swinging strikes in 85 pitches, keeping his ERA at 0.00. Zeferjahn moved swiftly through the next 1 2/3 innings, while Christopher Troye and Felix Cepeda added a scoreless inning. The Sea Dogs had some trouble on the basepaths as the first three runners to reach base were all caught stealing. Matthew Lugo opened the scoring with an RBI double in the seventh and added an RBI groundout in the eighth. Roman Anthony finished 2 for 3 with a walk, and Eddinson Paulino went 1 for 2 with a double and two walks.
-----
Wilmington Blue Rocks (WAS) 6, Greenville Drive 4 Despite a quick early lead, the Drive fell to Wilmington on Thursday. Cutter Coffey laced a two-run double, and Karson Simas went 1 for 3 with a double in the losing effort. Cooper Adams was tagged on the mound for five runs (three earned) in 3 2/3 innings. He walked two and struck out three, allowing his first runs of the year in his third start. Making his fifth appearance, Jonathan Brand allowed just an unearned run over 2 2/3 innings. The box score lists Drew Ehrhard as throwing the last 1 2/3 innings, but that may be a mistake as Ehrhard is on the roster as an infielder. There is no record of him pitching, dating back to his college days at the University of Tampa.
-----
Salem Red Sox 5, Lynchburg Hillcats (CLE) 4 The Garcia brothers continued to shine, with Jhostynxon Garcia and Johanfran Garcia leading Salem to victory. Jhostynxon went 1 for 4 with a double and a walk, and Johanfran went 0 for 2 but walked twice, stole two bases, and threw out the tying run at second base in the eighth inning. Natanael Yuten drove in three of the team's five runs while going 1 for 2 with a double and two walks, and Marvin Alcantara went 2 for 4 with an RBI. Matt Duffy got the start but got chased with two outs in the fifth, so he did not record a victory. He allowed three runs on seven hits. The win went to Royman Blanco, while Isaac Stebens picked up the save with two scoreless innings.
-----
Player of the Day: One week after striking out eight over five shutout innings, Zach Penrod followed that up with six strikeouts over 5 1/3 on Thursday. The 26-year-old left-handed pitcher continues to be a revelation after signing out of the Pioneer League in August 2023. While Penrod was great in limited action for Greenville last year and the Arizona Fall League this offseason, he did combine to walk 19 over those 34 2/3 innings. He has walked three over his first 10 1/3 innings this year, and refining that command and control will help determine his ultimate ceiling.

April 20, 2024 at 7:00 AM Cup of Coffee: Mayer walks off New Hampshire; Kavadas knocks two homers
4/20 Cup of Coffee: It was a dramatic Friday night on the farm, in contrast to the ho-hum defeat of Pittsburgh that the big club had. Worcester trailed in the late innings and had an offensive outburst for victory that featured two home runs for Niko Kavadas, while Marcelo Mayer walked off New Hampshire with a single in a game that was tight all evening. The low minors were less fortunate, as Salem stranded the winning run on first and Greenville's late comeback bid fell two runs short.
-----
Worcester Red Sox 12, Durham Bulls (TB) 5 Worcester was down 3-2 headed into the bottom of the sixth but burst out for 10 runs over its final three at-bats to take a convincing win over Durham ahead of a doubleheader on Saturday. Niko Kavadas had a big day, going 3 for 3 with a pair of two-run home runs that bookended the scoring. The game-winning run came off the bat of Jamie Westbrook, who drilled a three-run shot in the sixth as part of a three-homer day for the WooSox. He matched Kavadas' four RBI with a 2-for-2 night, while Chase Meidroth also had two hits. Three of Durham's runs were charged to starter Grant Gambrell, who went five innings. He allowed four hits and one walk but struck out five. Jorge Benitez, who handled the eighth, was the only Worcester arm to not allow a run.
-----
Portland Sea Dogs 3, New Hampshire Fisher Cats (TOR) 2 Marcelo Mayer was the hero, walking off the contest with a single to plate Nick Decker. He was 3 for 5 in a game where base knocks were hard to come by, with just 12 hits between the two teams. Kyle Teel also hit a solo home run in the third inning, while Blaze Jordan had the final Portland RBI. Brendan Celluci was the most impressive arm, as he threw three innings of shutout relief with just one hit and four strikeouts. He followed starter Helcris Olivarez, who struggled with command. He walked five over his four-inning stint, allowing both New Hampshire runs to cross the plate. Robert Kwiatkowski also had a clean ninth inning, with one punchout.
-----
Wilmington Blue Rocks (WAS) 5, Greenville Drive 3 The Drive scored three runs in the eighth, but it was too little, too late as Wilmington had already opened a five-run lead that was too steep to overcome. Tyler Miller was the only member of the Drive with more than one hit, as he and Juan Chacon each doubled. The bulk of the pitching duties were taken on by Connelly Early and Nathan Landry. The former surrendered two runs over 3 2/3 innings of work, while the latter coughed up a trio in a 3 1/3-inning outing. They did combine for 11 strikeouts, however.
-----
Lynchburg Hillcats (CLE) 4, Salem Red Sox 3 A foul out to the catcher halted Salem's comeback effort with the tying run on second and the winning run on first. The Red Sox scored the game's first run, but were unable to finish the job after scoring one in the eighth and another in the ninth. Andy Lugo, Juan Montero and Antonio Anderson each had two hits out of eight total knocks for Salem. Elmer Rodriguez-Cruz struck out nine in four innings of work, allowing two runs on just one hit, but four walks. Jojo Ingrassia pitched two shutout innings of relief.
-----
Player of the Day: There was quite a two-horse race between Marcelo Mayer and Niko Kavadas, but the walk-off takes the cake. Mayer has had a torrid start to the season for Portland with a .366 batting average and an OPS near .900. Now he can add walk-off winner to his resume. The No. 2 prospect is part of a deep Portland lineup and has been showing off his offensive prowess, despite a tough hitting environment in Maine to begin the year. Now that he's fully healthy, he can resume his path toward being an above-average regular and pushing his way to the big leagues as soon as the middle of next year.

April 21, 2024 at 7:00 AM Cup of Coffee: Sea Dogs stay hot on Lugo's bat, Dobbins' arm
4/21 Cup of Coffee: Portland picked up the only affiliate win on Saturday, with Matthew Lugo (pictured) turning in another big day at the plate, supporting a Hunter Dobbins quality start. The WooSox were swept in their doubleheader, garnering just five hits across the two games. Juan Chacon was a highlight in the Greenville loss, while Natanael Yuten and Marvin Alcantara had big games as Salem dropped a slugfest.
-----
Durham Bulls (TB) 12, Worcester Red Sox 2 (Game 1) The Worcester lineup managed just three hits in the opener, with a fourth-inning double by Eddy Alvarez the only one going for extra bases. Nick Sogard added a walk and run scored to his 1-for-3 effort, while Mark Contreras singled, stole a base, and drove in a run. Brian Van Belle allowed five runs in five innings, taking the loss. It was a Triple-A debut to forget for Cody Scroggins, as the righty surrendered seven runs in the sixth inning.
Durham Bulls 4, Worcester Red Sox 3 (Game 2) Rehabbing second baseman Vaughn Grissom picked up Worcester's only two hits in the nightcap as they failed to avoid the sweep. Perhaps even more important for Grissom than the pair of singles was that he started in the field for consecutive days, a key goal as he moves closer to his Boston debut. Jason Alexander took the loss, surrendering four runs on six hits in four innings. Justin Hagenman was outstanding in relief, firing three perfect innings and striking out five of the nine batters he faced.
-----
Portland Sea Dogs 6, New Hampshire Fisher Cats (TOR) 2 Matthew Lugo and the bottom half of the order carried the Portland offense as the Sea Dogs won for the eighth time in nine games. Lugo was 2 for 4 with a double, home run, two walks, and four RBIs. Phillip Sikes doubled as part of his 2-for-4 afternoon, while Mickey Gaspar had a double, walk, and pair of runs scored. Marcelo Mayer saw his hitting streak come to an end at 10 games, as the shortstop went 0 for 5.
Hunter Dobbins was economical in the victory, needing just 66 pitches to get through six innings. He allowed one run on four hits with a strikeout and a walk. Wyatt Olds turned in a scoreless seventh inning. Felix Cepeda finished off the victory with one run allowed in two innings to cap his third save of the young season.
-----
Wilmington Blue Rocks (WAS) 6, Greenville Drive 4 Greenville dropped its third straight in Delaware. Juan Chacon scored three of the four Drive runs, going 1 for 3 with a double and a walk. Allan Castro and Luis Ravelo added a single and walk apiece. Hayden Mullins took the loss, giving up three runs on three hits in 4 2/3, striking out six without issuing a walk.
-----
Lynchburg Hillcats (CLE) 13, Salem Red Sox 8 Salem ripped 10 hits but never led in Saturday's slugfest. Natanael Yuten continued his hot start to the season, going 2 for 4 with a walk, stolen base, and two runs scored, extending his hitting streak to five games. Marvin Alcantara also had a two-hit evening, his fourth multi-hit effort in five games after starting the year mired in a 3-for-34 slump. Andy Lugo drove in a pair as he went 2 for 4. Luis Cohen took the loss but turned in a solid start before the bats got hot. Cohen gave up two runs on three hits in four innings, striking out six against two walks.
-----
Player of the Day: Matthew Lugo continued his bounce-back campaign with a double and home run in the Portland win. The 2019 second-round pick struggled in his first exposure to Double-A last season, hitting just .242/.297/.381 in 83 games. He is already 60 percent of the way to his home run total from last year, with an outstanding 22 total bases in eight games.

April 22, 2024 at 7:00 AM Cup of Coffee: Meidroth, Sogard lead Worcester; Sikes propels Portland
4/22 Cup of Coffee: Boston's minor-league affiliates went 2-2 on Sunday, as both upper-level teams won and both lower-level teams fell. Chase Meidroth and Nick Sogard combined for five hits in Worcester's victory over Durham. Wikelman Gonzalez earned the win in relief while Phillip Sikes (pictured) plated three runs as Portland took its fifth straight from New Hampshire. Greenville and Salem each came up short, but Juan Chacon and Miguel Bleis were among those who stood out in defeat.
-----
Worcester Red Sox 7, Durham Bulls (TB) 1 Naoyuki Uwasawa put forth his best start for Worcester thus far. The Japanese right-hander allowed only one earned run on five hits and one walk to go along with a season-high seven strikeouts over five solid innings of work. He finished with 79 pitches (48 strikes) and induced 14 swings-and-misses. Vladimir Gutierrez (organizational debut), Jorge Benitez, and Zack Kelly combined for four scoreless frames of relief.
Three members of Worcester's lineup recorded two or more hits. Chase Meidroth went 2 for 3 with an RBI, a run scored, and two walks out of the leadoff spot. Batting behind him, Nick Sogard broke out by going 3 for 5 with a double and two runs scored. Mark Kolozsvary had two hits, including a 410-foot two-run shot that left his bat at 112.2 mph and was good for his first home run of the season. Tyler McDonough and Jamie Westbrook each had run-scoring doubles as well.
-----
Portland Sea Dogs 8, New Hampshire Fisher Cats (TOR) 5 Phillip Sikes led the way offensively by going 3 for 4 with a double, three RBIs, and one run scored out of the nine-hole. Nick Yorke also doubled and scored a run as part of a two-hit afternoon for Portland. Alex Binelas had just one hit, but he drove in two runs, scored twice, drew two walks, and stole his first base of the season. Mickey Gasper went 1 for 1 with three walks while Marcelo Mayer and Matthew Lugo each hit RBI doubles.
Angel Bastardo went three innings in his third start of the season for Portland. The 21-year-old righty allowed two earned runs on one hit, two walks, and three strikeouts. Wikelman Gonzalez picked up where Bastardo left off and fanned four over three scoreless, one-hit innings of relief to earn his first winning decision of the year. Alex Hoppe had to grind through a rough seventh inning, but Ryan Zeferjahn followed with two more shutout frames to notch the save.
-----
Wilmington Blue Rocks (WAS) 5, Greenville Drive 4 All four of Greenville's runs came in the sixth inning. Cutter Coffey accounted for his side's lone run-scoring hit by going 1 for 5 with an RBI single. Juan Chacon reached base thrice, going 1 for 3 with one run scored, two walks, and a stolen base. Max Carlson took the loss in his High-A debut, as he allowed one run on one hit, two walks, one hit batsman, and one strikeout over 1 2/3 innings of relief. Caleb Bolden, on the other hand, retired all five batters he faced.
-----
Lynchburg Hillcats (CLE) 6, Salem Red Sox 2 Both Miguel Bleis and Nelly Taylor doubled as part of two-hit performances. Taylor drove in Bleis with his two-base hit in the third inning. Jedixson Paez was charged with the losing decision after allowing five runs (three earned) on six hits and two walks with seven strikeouts over five innings. CJ Weins and Isaac Stebens each tossed a scoreless frame out of the Salem bullpen.
-----
Player of the Day: Phillip Sikes put the finishing touches on a productive series at Hadlock Field by recording his first three-hit game of the season on Sunday. Appearing in four of six games against New Hampshire, the soon-to-be 25-year-old outfielder went 7 for 14 (.500) with two doubles, four RBIs, three runs scored, two stolen bases, one walk, and five strikeouts.

April 24, 2024 at 7:00 AM Cup of Coffee: Jordan homers; Zanetello makes season debut
4/24 Cup of Coffee: The Drive had the best night among Red Sox affiliates last night, scoring eight runs and tossing a shutout. Juan Daniel Encarnacion (pictured) was phenomenal in his start, while the offense saw contributions from just about everyone. The Salem game saw the season debut for Nazzan Zanetello as well as a great game from Blake Wehunt. The WooSox did not play due to rain, while Blaze Jordan had a huge night in Portland's loss.
-----
Worcester Red Sox @ Toledo Mud Hens (DET); PPD (rain) This game was washed out and will be made up as part of a doubleheader Wednesday beginning at 11:05 am Eastern Time.
-----
Hartford Yard Goats (COL) 9, Portland Sea Dogs 6 Blaze Jordan was the star of an otherwise tough night for Portland. The third baseman went 2 for 5 with a solo home run and a three-run double. It was his first long ball of the 2024 campaign. Roman Anthony and Kyle Teel had productive nights as well, both going 1 for 3 with a single and two walks. Phillip Sikes also singled, walked, and scored a pair of runs. Isaac Coffey labored through four innings, allowing four hits and four walks, but limiting the damage to just two runs. He punched out four. Robert Kwiatkowski continued his solid season so far with no runs allowed over 1 1/3 innings. His ERA is 2.08 in 8 2/3 innings this year.
-----
Greenville Drive 8, Greensboro Grasshoppers (PIT) 0 The Drive put together a great full game last night, led by Juan Daniel Encarnacion. The 23-year old righty fired five shutout innings and allowed just three hits. He punched out six and did not issue a free pass. He got through those five innings in just 61 pitches, 47 of which were strikes (77%). Cade Feeney followed Encarnacion with 2 1/3 scoreless frames of his own with two strikeouts and no walks. Jonathan Brand closed it out with no runs allowed and three strikeouts in 1 2/3 innings. His ERA is still 0.00 on the year and now has 18 strikeouts to just three walks in 11 2/3 innings.
At the plate, eight of nine starters had at least one base hit. Cutter Coffey, from the leadoff spot, singled and doubled as part of a 2-for-5 night, scoring two runs. Ahbram Liendo, Ronald Rosario, and Miguel Ugueto each had two hits as well. Caden Rose added a two-run single and Juan Chacon roped an RBI double.
-----
Carolina Mudcats (MIL) 4, Salem Red Sox 2 Despite a rough night for Salem, a pair of 2023 draft picks made some noise. Most notably, Nazzan Zanetello, the Sox' second-round pick last year, made his 2024 season debut. He was the DH and went 1 for 4 with a single. On the mound, 2023 ninth-rounder Blake Wehunt started and tossed five tremendous innings. He allowed just three hits and no runs with five strikeouts and one walk. His ERA was lowered to 1.69 in three starts. Jojo Ingrassia pitched well in relief with 1 2/3 shutout innings with two strikeouts and no walks. The rest of the offense was quiet, but Miguel Bleis ripped a double and Albert Felix reached twice with a single and a walk.
-----
Player of the Day: An extremely efficient five innings from Juan Daniel Encarnacion earns him the honor for last night. An international free agent signing in 2018, Encarnacion has seen time with Greenville in each of the past three seasons. He appeared in 24 games last year (21 starts) and had a 6.32 ERA. His strikeout numbers were impressive, with 101 in 99 2/3 frames. So far this year, he has 17 strikeouts and only five walks in 12 1/3 innings, and opponents are hitting just .217 off him.

April 25, 2024 at 7:00 AM Cup of Coffee: Castro walks it off in Greenville; Mayer nearly hits for cycle
4/25 Cup of Coffee: Boston's minor-league affiliates went 2-3 on a busy Wednesday. Nick Sogard racked up four hits in Worcester's doubleheader against Toledo. Marcelo Mayer (pictured) finished a triple shy of the cycle while Nick Yorke added a home run of his own in Portland's victory over Hartford. In Greenville, Allan Castro delivered with a walk-off double as part of a come-from-behind win at Fluor Field. On the mound, Matt Duffy put together his best start of the season for Salem.
-----
Toledo Mud Hens (DET) 5, Worcester Red Sox 3 (Game 1) Richard Fitts had a rough outing in Game 1 of Wednesday's twin bill. The 24-year-old righty was charged with his first loss of the season after allowing five earned runs on seven hits, three walks, and four strikeouts over four innings. Chase Shugart followed with two scoreless frames out of the bullpen. Chase Meidroth and Nick Sogard accounted for five of Worcester's eight hits. The former went 3 for 4 with a run scored out of the leadoff spot while the latter went 2 for 3 with a double, run scored, and a walk. Nathan Hickey also doubled in a run for his lone hit of the contest.
Toledo Mud Hens (DET) 3, Worcester Red Sox 2 (Game 2) Grant Gambrell was Worcester's only pitcher in Game 2, so he was credited with the first complete game of his professional career. The right-hander yielded three earned runs on eight hits, zero walks, and a season-high nine strikeouts over six quality innings. He did, however, fall to 0-3 on the year. Offensively, Mark Contreras led the way by going 1 for 4 with a two-run triple. Nick Sogard collected two more hits while the rehabbing Vaughn Grissom went 0 for 1 with three walks and a stolen base.
-----
Portland Sea Dogs 7, Hartford Yard Goats (COL) 4 Marcelo Mayer nearly hit for the cycle, going 3 for 4 with a double, a solo homer, three runs scored, and a walk. Nick Decker also clubbed a solo shot while Nick Yorke drilled a three-run shot for his second big fly of the year. Eddinson Paulino and Blaze Jordan each hit doubles, with the latter going 2 for 5 with two RBIs and one run scored to extend his hitting streak to five games.
Zach Penrod struggled in his third start of the season for Portland. The 26-year-old southpaw lasted just 2 2/3 innings, surrendering four runs (three earned) on four hits (including one home run), four walks, and three strikeouts. Out of the Sea Dogs bullpen, Wyatt Olds, Jacob Webb, and Felix Cepeda combined to fan nine over 6 2/3 scoreless frames of relief.
-----
Greenville Drive 6, Greensboro Grasshoppers (PIT) 5 The Drive trailed by three going into the ninth but came away as victors thanks to Allan Castro's walk-off three-run double. Like Castro, Bryan Gonzalez also had multiple hits, as he went 2 for 4 with an RBI double, two runs scored, and a stolen base. Cutter Coffey drove in two runs while singling and drawing a walk out of the leadoff spot. Kristian Campbell went 0 for 1 with two walks and a run scored in his first appearance since last Wednesday.
Cooper Adams went five innings in his second start of the season for Greenville. The 23-year-old righty allowed three earned runs on three hits (two homers), two walks, and four strikeouts. Of the 74 pitches he threw, 44 went for strikes. Bryce Bonnin made his organizational debut out of the bullpen and worked a scoreless sixth inning. Caleb Bolden picked up the win after recording the final two outs in the top of the ninth.
-----
Carolina Mudcats (MIL) 4, Salem Red Sox 3 Matt Duffy pitched well in his fourth start of the season for Salem. The 22-year-old righty surrendered only one earned run on three hits (including a solo homer), zero walks, and six strikeouts over five solid innings. He finished with 56 pitches (43 strikes) and did not factor into the decision. Albert Feliz drove in all three Salem runs; doubling in a pair in the fifth and pushing across another on a sacrifice fly in the seventh. Daniel McElveny scored two of those runs while going 1 for 2 with a walk in his 2024 debut.
-----
Player of the Day: Marcelo Mayer came into play Wednesday amid a 1-for-15 skid, but he broke out of that in a big way by recording his second three-hit game of the season. The talented shortstop is now batting .317/.344/.500 with two home runs and eight RBIs in 14 games for Portland this year. He is currently ranked as the No. 2 prospect in the organization.

April 26, 2024 at 7:00 AM Cup of Coffee: Rodriguez shines for Salem as Yuten provides punch
4/26 Cup of Coffee: All four full-season affiliates were in action on Thursday and three came away with victories. A sterling effort by Elmer Rodriugez (pictured) and a pair of relievers along with a Natanael Yuten blast gave Salem the victory. Portland also prevailed in a pitchers' duel, with Helcris Olivarez proving nearly unhittable. Worcester delivered a four-run, ninth-inning rally to come from behind in its win, with only Greenville dropping its contest.
-----
Worcester Red Sox 7, Toledo Mud Hens (DET) 5 Trailing 5-3 headed into the ninth inning, the WooSox stormed ahead on back-to-back two-run doubles by Eddy Alvarez and Jamie Westbrook. Westbrook had previously driven in a run on a two-bagger in the fourth. Elih Marrero delivered a double and a two-run homer, while Karson Simas was 2 for 3 with a walk and two runs scored. Luis Guerrero got credit for the win in relief, allowing just one hit in two scoreless frames, striking out four against two walks. Starter Brian Van Belle went five innings, giving up four runs on 10 hits.
-----
Portland Sea Dogs 3, Hartford Yard Goats (COL) 2 A two-run homer off the bat of Nick Yorke highlighted a three-run first inning that would give Helcris Olivarez all the support he would need. Olivarez gave up just one hit across five scoreless innings, striking out six and walking one to earn his first win as a member of the Red Sox organization. Ryan Zeferjahn surrendered a pair of unearned runs in his two innings of work, followed by two hitless frames from Alex Hoppe. Blaze Jordan was 3 for 4 at the plate, extending his hitting streak to six games. He's 10 for 26 during that stretch.
-----
Greensboro Grasshoppers (PIT) 11, Greenville Drive 1 The Drive's victory on Wednesday gave them their first consecutive win of the season, but little went right in Thursday's attempt to take their third in a row. Starting pitcher Connelly Early went four innings, surrendering six runs on five hits including a pair of home runs. Adam Smith made his organizational debut, surrendering three runs in 2/3 of an inning. Allan Castro and Miguel Ugueto delivered matching lines at the plate, with both outfielders going 2 for 4 with a double
-----
Salem Red Sox 3, Carolina Mudcats (MIL) 1 A trio of Salem hurlers struck out 17 batters en route to the win. Elmer Rodriguez got the start, giving up one run on three hits in five innings, striking out seven against one walk. The effort gave the 2021 fourth-round pick his first winning decision since June of last year. Trennor O'Donnell struck out five in two scoreless innings, surrendering just a pair of singles. Max Carlson went two perfect frames for the save, striking out five of the six batters he saw and throwing 18 of 23 pitches for strikes. A Natanael Yuten three-run third-inning homer provided all of the run scoring for Salem. Nazzan Zanetello was 2 for 2 with a run scored before getting lifted for a pinch hitter, while Andy Lugo doubled as part of his two-hit evening.
-----
Player of the Day: Elmer Rodriguez gets the nod as player of the day, though you could argue that the two relievers who followed him were even more effective. With seven strikeouts in five innings, Rodriugez now has 27 in 16 frames as he lowered his ERA to 3.38. Perhaps more importantly, the 20-year-old right-hander did not beat himself, walking just one batter after issuing eight walks in 11 innings in his first three appearances. Rodriguez is knocking on the door of the organizational top 20, sitting as the 23rd-ranked prospect in the system.

April 27, 2024 at 7:00 AM Cup of Coffee: Mayer has two hits in slow offensive day
4/27 Cup of Coffee: There wasn't much offense to be had anywhere, as no game featured more than seven total runs, while four scores was enough for three teams to emerge victorious and the fourth had just three. Tyler Miller (pictured) was able to record three hits in a loss for Greenville. He, Marcelo Mayer, Karson Simas, and Nelly Taylor formed the multi-hit club on the night, while Eddy Alvarez, Blaze Jordan and Matthew Lugo each went yard. The best outing on the mound belonged to Hunter Dobbins, who turned in a quality start for Portland. -----
Toledo Mud Hens (DET) 4, Worcester Red Sox 3 Worcester scored one in the ninth and got the tying run to third, but it was too little, too late, which was a theme on the farm on Friday night. The Red Sox had just five hits, two of which were by Karson Simas, while Eddy Alvarez hit a home run in the sixth to bring his team to within one run. It wasn't a banner outing for Jason Alexander, who allowed three runs over four innings of work. He allowed six hits and one walk, but he did punch out six Mud Hen hitters. He was followed by Lucas Luetge, who didn't allow a run in two innings.
-----
Hartford Yard Goats (COL) 4, Portland Sea Dogs 3 Four of Portland's six hits went for extra bases, including home runs by Blaze Jordan and Matthew Lugo, but both were solo shots and other hitters weren't able to string enough together to win, as Eddinson Paulino's two-out double in the fifth represented the team's last baserunner, though Marcelo Mayer did have two singles. On the mound, Hunter Dobbins contributed six innings and allowed just two runs on five hits, though he did walk three. He also struck out seven hitters.
-----
Greensboro Grasshoppers (PIT) 4, Greenville Drive 2 Greenville scored the game's first two runs on Tyler Miller's two-RBI double, but the Grasshoppers tied the game in the next half inning and added two more later for the win. Miller had three of his team's seven hits, two of which went for extra bases. Hayden Mullins had traffic consistently throughout his four-inning outing, with three walks and a pair of hits but no runs scored on his ledger. Cade Feeney also struck out each of the batters he faced in the ninth, but the tying run couldn't get on base for a comeback bid.
-----
Salem Red Sox 3, Carolina Mudcats (MIL) 1 Salem was able to muster only four hits, but it was enough to record a 3-1 win for the second consecutive game. The Red Sox held off a ninth-inning rally as a leadoff double scored, but Jojo Ingrassia kept the tying run at the plate. Luis Cohen made the start and pitched five innings of shutout ball, scattering two hits and three walks. He struck out one batter. He was followed by Michael Sansone, who made his season debut after being signed earlier this week. He threw three innings and allowed three hits and one walk, but no runs came across. Nelly Taylor had half of his team's base knocks, including a double, and scored a run.
-----
Player of the Day: A ninth-round pick out of Auburn in 2021, Tyler Miller is aggressive at the plate and has above-average raw power, which helped him to a three-hit evening in Greenville on Friday. He needs to improve his offensive approach, but he showed his skills as his three hits each came early in the count.
