Jon Couture @joncouture · 29m I guess that answers the question of whether you can win a game on a sun-aided dropped fly and a walk.
And the bloom feels very off the Matt Strahm rose. #RedSox

Boston Red Sox avoid sweep with 4-2 extra-innings win over Cubs; Xander Bogaerts leaves game after being spiked Updated: Jul. 03, 2022, 7:07 p.m. | Published: Jul. 03, 2022, 6:46 p.m.
By Chris Cotillo | ccotillo@MassLive.com
CHICAGO -- A day after two errors cost the Red Sox a winnable game, an 11th-inning miscue by the Cubs allowed the Red Sox to escape Wrigley Field without being swept.
With two outs in the 11th, Cubs reliever Rowan Wick fielded a soft Trevor Story grounder and threw it away, allowing two Red Sox runners to score. Boston won, 4-2, and improved to 44-35 on the season. The Red Sox finished their three-city, nine-game road trip at 5-4.
It wasn’t easy -- or pretty -- however. The usually reliable Matt Strahm was the latest Sox reliever to blow a save, as he allowed a game-tying solo home run to Patrick Wisdom in the eighth. Both teams failed to cash in on scoring opportunities in the 10th, then Christian Arroyo walked to lead off the 11th. Wick got two quick outs and looked to have a third before his throw went wide of first baseman David Bote. In the bottom of the inning, Jake Diekman pitched his second consecutive scoreless inning; he got the win. The affair was Boston’s longest of the year, lasting four hours and 25 minutes.
Chicago opened the scoring in the first, when Rafael Ortega hit a leadoff double and then scored on a Willson Contreras RBI single. The Red Sox tied it when second baseman Alfonso Rivas couldn’t corral a Franchy Cordero pop-up in the second and Alex Verdugo scored from third. Starter Keegan Thompson walked Jarren Duran with the bases loaded to make it 2-1 in the fourth.
Seabold lasted just four innings but limited the damage, holding Chicago to one run on six hits while striking out four. Hirokazu Sawamura (two scoreless innings) and John Schreiber (scoreless seventh) held the lead before Strahm came in for the eighth.
In the top of the 10th, automatic runner Alex Verdugo advanced to third on a groundout, then was gunned down at home plate on a Franchy Cordero grounder to third. With two men on and two outs, Bobby Dalbec struck out.
The Red Sox left 13 on base and were 2-for-15 with runners in scoring position. Rafael Devers, Christian Vázquez, Franchy Cordero and Christian Arroyo each had two hits.
Bogaerts leaves game
Shortstop Xander Bogaerts left the game in the seventh inning after getting spiked in the thigh by Willson Contreras, who was caught attempting to steal second. The Red Sox announced Bogaerts has a “left thigh laceration.” It’s not expected to be something that keeps him out long.
Rays up next
The Red Sox will face a quick turnaround as they’re scheduled to play the Rays at home on Monday at 1:35 p.m. ET. That Fourth of July matchup will kick off a seven-game homestand that starts with three games against Tampa Bay. Here’s the schedule:
Monday, 1:35 p.m. ET -- TBD vs. RHP Michael Wacha (6-1 2.69 ERA)
* Wacha is feeling “a heavy arm” and so Alex Cora said the Red Sox might scratch him Monday and start Kutter Crawford instead.
Tuesday, 7:10 p.m. ET -- LHP Jeffrey Springs (3-2, 2.25 ERA) vs. RHP Nick Pivetta (8-5, 3.23 ERA)
Wednesday, 7:10 p.m. ET -- RHP Corey Kluber (3-5, 3.91 ERA) vs. TBD

Red Sox Stats @redsoxstats · 2m Good fight from Seabold, don't think he was working with close to his best stuff. FB averaged 91 mph, but Cubs had trouble with it. 1 swing and miss against his change and slider. Almost strictly poor contact in the air. Curious what he'd look like airing it out in short stints. 4/2 K/W in 4 innings, with 1 ER in 4 innings. I'll take that every time from someone that is theoretically our #7 SP. Joey needs to start figuring out fracking whiff rates. 9 'Whiffs'

Red Sox Stats @redsoxstats · 3m Strahm has been bad for a month Not really. He has a 3.12 since June 7th. For most mediocre players, I can make all of them look good or bad, depending on when I choose a starting point.
