Red Sox Stats @redsoxstats · 1h Will be nice to get a look at Whitlock this weekend, it's clear that his injury was messing with his pitches for a while leading into his IL trip. Took something like for him to finally appear mortal. Another thing I noticed about Whitlock that I think is bizarre is his slider has only been the same for 2 months of his career, last July and August he threw it the same way. Every month outside that he has changed the shape of it horizontally, vertically, and often both.

Good game. Decent game by Eovaldi, and nice game out of the BP. 4 scoreless innings from Whitlock/Houck, imvho shows we can bend the odds in our favor.

Boston Red Sox escape with dramatic 5-4 win over Yankees in extras after blowing save; Tanner Houck pitches out of 2 bases-loaded jams Updated: Jul. 15, 2022, 11:12 p.m. | Published: Jul. 15, 2022, 11:10 p.m.
By Chris Cotillo | ccotillo@MassLive.com
NEW YORK -- Call him Tanner Houdini.
After blowing his first career save, Red Sox closer Tanner Houck escaped bases-loaded situations in back-to-back innings as Boston escaped Yankee Stadium with a dramatic 5-4 win. After Boston blew a one run lead with sloppy defense in the ninth, Xander Bogaerts scored the winning run on a Michael King wild pitch in the 11th. Boston snapped a four-game losing streak and improved to 48-43.
Houck’s heroics came after his struggles. With Boston leading, 4-3, Houck entered and allowed a leadoff single to Gleyber Torres before hitting Matt Carpenter with a pitch. Isiah Kiner-Falefa then tried to lay down a sacrifice bunt, and Houck fielded the ball for what looked like an easy out at third base but threw it into left field and allowed Torres to score. The Yankees then had the bases loaded with no outs, but Houck escaped with a double play ball and a tapper back to the mound.
After the Sox failed to score in the 10th, the Yankees again loaded the bases, this time with one out. But Houck got Torres to ground into a 4-6-3 double play to end the inning. In the top of the 11th, Bogaerts (the ghost runner) advanced to third on a deep Alex Verdugo fly ball then raced to score on a wild pitch with two outs. Ryan Brasier recorded the save with a 1-2-3 11th.
Before the ninth, the first seven runs of the game came on home runs.
Rafael Devers got things going in the first when he blasted a two-run shot off Yankees starter Jordan Montgomery. Righty Nathan Eovaldi, who looked a bit rusty in his first start since June 8, tossed two scoreless innings before running into trouble in the third. After D.J. LeMahieu singled and Eovaldi walked Anthony Rizzo with two outs, Giancarlo Stanton went the opposite way with a three-run blast to give the Yankees the lead.
That lead didn’t last long. With one out in the fourth, Christian Vázquez blasted a solo shot into the left-field stands to tie things up. Three innings later, Bobby Dalbec worked a six-pitch at-bat against the struggling Aroldis Chapman before lifting a 2-2 slider into the seats to give the Red Sox a one-run lead. He was 1-for-15 before that at-bat.
Eovaldi lasted just 4⅓ innings, allowing three runs on six hits and recording four strikeouts despite diminished velocity. John Schreiber recorded four outs to bridge the cap to Garrett Whitlock, who returned from the injured list to pitch the seventh and eighth.
Whitlock was utterly dominant. In his first appearance since June 7 and his first outing out of the bullpen since April 19, he retired all three batters he faced, needing just 23 pitches in two innings. Whitlock struck out three, including Aaron Judge and Giancarlo Stanton.
Pivetta goes Saturday
The Red Sox are winless in 10 series against American League East opponents this season, making them the only team in baseball that has not won a divisional series yet in 2022. They’ll snap that streak with a win either Saturday or Sunday.
Righty Nick Pivetta (8-6, 4.08 ERA) will pitch Saturday night opposite Yankees righty Jameson Taillon (9-2, 4.01 ERA). First pitch is set for 7:15 p.m. ET.

Bogaerts scores on wild pitch in 11th, Red Sox top Yanks 5-4 AP
NEW YORK (AP) Xander Bogaerts took his lead off third and wanted to be extra aggressive.
''I just had in my head I had to be ready,'' the four-time All-Star said. ''As soon I saw it bounce, I just took a chance and went.''
Bogaerts slid across the plate with the tiebreaking run in the 11th as Michael King's slider bounced off Jose Trevino and back toward the mound, and the Boston Red Sox recovered from a meltdown in the ninth to beat the New York Yankees 5-4 Friday night for just their third win in 11 games.
All three of those Boston wins have come against the Yankees, who have the best record in the majors at 62-28 but have lost five of six in their worst stretch this season. Giancarlo Stanton hit a three-run homer off Nathan Eovaldi, who made his first start since June 8 after recovering from lower back inflammation.
''A little adversity never hurts anybody. I think we'll be fine,'' Trevino said.
New York, which took a 3-2 in the third on Stanton's 24th homer, went 2 for 15 with runners in scoring position.
Stanton put the Yankees ahead 3-2 in the third on a 2-0 cutter. Stanton has four homers in seven games against Boston this year and 13 of his 24 long balls have been to the opposite field.
''We should have won that game. We had our chances and just couldn't break though,'' said Yankees manager Aaron Boone, ejected for the fifth time this season, again for arguing low called strikes.
Rafael Devers hit a two-run homer in the first off Jordan Montgomery, Christian Vazquez tied the score 3-3 with a solo drive in the fourth and Bobby Dalbec hit a go-ahead homer in the seven th for the Red Sox, who arrived after getting swept in a four-game series at Tampa Bay.
''It was a big win for us to get back on track,'' Eovaldi said.
Dalbec, in a 1-for-15 slide coming in, put the Red Sox ahead 4-3 when he pulled a slider from Aroldis Chapman for his seventh home run this season.
Before a season-high crowd of 47,573, New York tied it in the ninth off Tanner Houck (5-3), who blew a save for the first time in seven chances. Gleyber Torres reached on an infield hit, Matt Carpenter was hit by a pitch and Houck threw past third on Isiah Kiner-Falefa's bunt as Torres scored.
Houck got out of further trouble when Trevino bounced into a 5-2-3 double play and DJ LeMahieu grounded out. Then in the 10th, Houck escaped a first-and-third, one-out jam when Torres grounded into an inning-ending double play.
Alex Verdugo's leadoff fly to the left-field warning track against King (6-2) in the 11th advanced Bogaerts, the automatic runner who had stranded the bases loaded when he struck out in the 10th against Clay Holmes.
Both Trevino and King scampered to retrieve the bounced pitch with two outs.
''I've just got to keep it closer,'' Trevino said.
The catcher reached the ball on the grass, failed to come up with it and fell as Bogaerts reached the plate.
''Sometimes he doesn't look pretty running-wise,'' Red Sox manager Alex Cora said, ''but when he has to go, he goes.''
EXTRA EXTRA
Coming off two losses in a three-game series to the Reds, the Yankees played a third straight extra-inning game for the first time since May 2001.
SAVE
Ryan Brasier retired three straight batters for his first save since June 17, 2019, ending a 4-hour game by getting Aaron Hicks on a full-count checked swing strikeout called by third base umpire Jim Reynolds.
TOSSED AGAIN
Boone was ejected by plate umpire D.J. Reyburn after arguing a first-pitch strike Carpenter in the ninth that appeared low, an inning after 6-foot-8 Aaron Judge was called out on strikes on a pitch below the knees.
''I don't think we need to do the automated strike zone. I think the umpires do a great job as it is,'' Judge said. ''That's part of the game. It's the human element.''
Judge has had 58 pitches outside the strike zone called strikes, most in the majors.
''I talk to people. They're doing the best they can,'' Boone said.
FOOD FOR THOUGHT
Cora, speaking on why he likes Yankee Stadium, praised visiting clubhouse chef Miguel Ramirez.
''He's the best in the business,'' Cora said. ''The rice and beans and the steak, it's amazing. Whatever I want, Latino-wise, they'll fix it. And the coffee's good, too.''
TRAINER'S ROOM
Red Sox: Garrett Whitlock had been sidelined since June 7 with right hip inflammation, struck out three over two perfect innings. LHP Matt Strahm was placed on the IL retroactive to Wednesday and RHP Phillips Valdez was optioned to Triple-A Worcester.
Yankees: RHP Domingo German, sidelined since spring training with right shoulder impingement, allowed three hits over six scoreless innings for Scranton/Wilkes-Barre in his fifth rehab start, throwing 50 of 65 pitches for strikes. Boone said German could move into Luis Severino's rotation slot after the All-Star Game. ... OF Miguel Andujar was scratched from Scranton's lineup with a neck injury. ... RHP Miguel Castro left before the game to have an MRI on his right shoulder. ... 3B Josh Donaldson's right index finger was in a splint after getting hit by a pitch on Thursday. He struck out as a pinch-hitter in the 11th. ... Hicks pinch hit and popped out in the seventh, then went to left field in his first appearance since fouling a pitch off his right shin on Tuesday.
UP NEXT
RHP Jameson Taillon (9-2) starts Saturday for the Yankees on five days' rest and RHP Nick Pivetta (8-6) is on the mound for Boston.

'I took a chance': Xander darts home on WP to beat Yanks 12:28 AM ADT Bill Ladson
Bill Ladson @ladsonbill24
NEW YORK -- Yankee Stadium had that playoff atmosphere Friday night for the opener of a three-game series between the rival Red Sox and Yankees. It was a sellout crowd of 47,573, but when it was over, Boston silenced the crowd as it edged New York, 5-4, in 11 innings.
With the victory, the Red Sox ended a four-game losing streak and are tied with the Blue Jays for the third Wild Card spot in the American League.
“It was a great battle -- a lot of good things,” Red Sox manager Alex Cora said.
The game was tied at 4 when the Red Sox took the lead in the top of the 11th inning off reliever Michael King. Automatic runner Xander Bogaerts was on third base with two outs when King threw a wild pitch -- a slider. The ball bounced away from Yankees catcher Jose Trevino, allowing Bogaerts to score the go-ahead run. It helped that Bogaerts had a good secondary lead and was aggressive.
“[King] is a tough pitcher. Everyone that comes out of the bullpen is pretty tough,” Bogaerts said. “The whole night, he didn’t bounce any breaking balls. He had it pretty much under control. I just had it in my head that I had to be ready in case he bounced one. … As soon as I saw it bounce, I took a chance and I went.”
Cora said Bogaerts has great baseball instincts, so he wasn’t surprised that Bogaerts scored the winning run.
“For him to take a chance there … he had to read the pitch. He was aggressive and he got the run,” Cora said. “We needed to score there. Let’s put it that way. [Bogaerts understood] who was on the mound, and the count.
“That’s why I bet he was more aggressive with his primary lead. He saw it right away. As soon as the ball bounced, he took off. You have to give him credit. Like I always say, he grinds, he plays every day. Sometimes it doesn’t look pretty -- running-wise and all that. But when he has to go, he goes.”
The Red Sox’s bullpen was outstanding all night, despite Tanner Houck blowing the save in the ninth inning. After Nathan Eovaldi left the game in the fifth with one out in his return from the injured list, the relievers -- John Schreiber, Garrett Whitlock, Houck and Ryan Brasier -- held New York to one run for the final 6 2/3 innings, striking out a combined six batters along the way.
“They are an incredible group of guys out there in the bullpen,” Houck said. “It’s a privilege to be a part of them. … I can really speak highly of them all day.”
Houck was the one who was pitching a tightrope in the ninth inning. With no outs and runners on first and second, Isiah Kiner-Falefa bunted the ball right back to Houck, who attempted to get the forceout at third base. But Houck threw the ball away, which allowed Gleyber Torres to tie the score at 4.
“We are human just like everybody else,” Houck said. “I realized it’s not over yet. We got to go out there and finish the inning. That’s what I really tried to do.”
Which he did -- miraculously. After an intentional walk, Houck went back to work with the bases loaded and nobody out. He induced Trevino to hit into a 5-2-3 double play, while DJ LeMahieu grounded out to end the threat.
“It worked out in the end,” Houck said. “I took a step back, took a deep breath and did what I had to do. “I’m thankful for the team to pick me up and back me up there.” .
The Yankees, who have lost five out of their last six, had multiple chances to put the game away, but they couldn’t find the big hit.
"We should have won that game,” Yankees manager Aaron Bone said. “We had our chances, just couldn't break through, so it's frustrating. We've got to turn the page on this one, get after it tomorrow and try and close out this half the way we're capable of."

Injuries & Moves: Whitlock, Eovaldi back; Strahm to IL July 15th, 2022
Keep track of the Red Sox’s recent transactions and injury updates throughout the season. LATEST NEWS
July 15: RHP Nathan Eovaldi and RHP Garrett Whitlock activated from IL; LHP Matt Strahm placed on 15-day IL; RHP Phillips Valdez optioned to Triple-A Worcester Eovaldi (low back inflammation) was activated and started the opener against the Yankees, while Whitlock returned from the IL after a bout with right hip inflammation.
Valdez allowed eight earned runs in 16 1/3 innings over 13 appearances out of the bullpen, but he was the odd man out with Whitlock returning. Strahm was hit on the left wrist by a line drive in Tuesday's game against the Rays and hasn't been able to play catch.
LHP Matt Strahm (left wrist contusion) Expected return: After All-Star break Strahm was hit on the left wrist by a line drive on July 12 against the Rays, but X-rays were negative. According to manager Alex Cora, Strahm hasn’t been able to play catch and the wrist remains stiff. “We just have to get him right,” Cora said. (Last updated: July 15)
OF Kiké Hernández (right hip flexor strain) Expected return: Unclear Hernández saw an independent hip specialist in New York on July 14, and nothing was found beyond the diagnosis the Red Sox had given him previously. Hernández got a platelet-rich plasma injection and the hope is that will help relieve the pain and allow him to resume baseball activities in the near future.
"He’s seen a lot of doctors and all that stuff,” Red Sox manager Alex Cora said. “We’ll see how he reacts and hopefully he can be with us sooner rather than later." (Last updated: July 15)

#RedSox are 48-43. They needed that one desperately.
Nathan Eovaldi was passable in his return. Garrett Whitlock was scintillating.
And Xander Bogaerts made a couple winning plays that go beyond the box score. He's the captain.

Tom Caron @tomcaron · 8h One of the major issues the Red Sox are dealing with is lack of production from the bottom of the lineup. Sox 7-9 hitters are currently 3-for-42 (.071) on the road trip. #RedSox
Pete Abraham @peteabe · 8h Following up on TC's point, Sox 7-8-9 hitters have a .612 OPS, 23rd in the majors. And 16 HRs, 28th in majors.

Julian McWilliams @byjulianmack · 4h This quote by Bogaerts just further proves the baseball player he is (not that it needs to be proved further). To be able to think like that, in that moment, that quick, is a rare skill set you can’t teach. I hope the Red Sox don’t take this for granted.
