I would suspect the wait in the line up is cuz of JDM do they take him out of bubble wrap and play him, or screw around with the rules on IL wait till later until they deal him this week?
"Bloomball" is something else.
Interesting to see if it is not dress like a seat tonight with Papi having his night tonight.

Ian Browne @ianmbrowne · 17m No lineup yet. The fact they are waiting on J.D. Martinez rather than already putting out a lineup without him is probably a good sign.
Trevor Story hit off a tee yesterday. Said the hand still isn't where it needs to be to allow him to pinpoint a return date.

Jones homers for Guardians to spoil Papi's return to Fenway AP
BOSTON (AP) Guardians rookie Nolan Jones politely asked reporters to wait so he could text his father a picture of the souvenir baseball he is bringing home from Fenway Park.
Not the one from his home run - a three-run shot that was just the second homer of Jones' major league career. The one that David Ortiz autographed for him on the night the Red Sox slugger returned from Cooperstown as a newly minted Hall of Famer.
''David Ortiz is my hero, actually,'' Jones said, stopping to show off the ball to his teammate Owen Miller after Cleveland beat Boston 8-3 on Tuesday night.
''Did you get two?'' Miller asked.
Minutes after Ortiz took the field in a pregame ceremony and proclaimed himself a good luck charm for his slumping former team, the Red Sox fell behind 5-0 on their way to a sixth loss in seven games. They have lost 14 of their last 18 to fall into last place in the AL East.
Austin Hedges also homered, and Steven Kwan had three hits to help Guardians snap a three-game losing streak. Bryan Shaw made his first start after a record 732 relief appearances, and Kirk McCarty (1-2) earned his first career victory, pitching four scoreless innings and striking out four.
''He went right through the middle of that game and quieted it down,'' Guardians manager Terry Francona said. ''I think he had some adrenaline because it was coming out hot.''
Xander Bogaerts had three hits for Boston. Josh Winckowski (3-5) allowed five runs on six hits and a walk, striking out two in three innings.
The Guardians scored solo runs in the first two innings before Jones hit a three-run homer to make it 5-0 in the third. Boston scored two in the bottom half to chase Shaw, and had the bases loaded with one out.
But Nick Sandlin got Kevin Plawecki on a shallow popup, and Jones, in right field, threw out Bogaerts trying to tag from third to end the inning. The Guardians lead the majors with 27 outfield assists.
HONORING BIG PAPI
Ortiz was inducted in Cooperstown on Sunday, and both managers in Tuesday's game took part in the pregame ceremony. Francona led the Boston teams that won the 2004 and '07 World Series; Red Sox skipper Alex Cora was a player on the '07 championship team.
Ortiz took the field to chants of ''Papi!'' and told the crowd: ''The good luck charm just arrived.''
Francona said honoring Ortiz and coming away with a win combined to make it a great night.
''These are our guys over here,'' he said. ''That was a long time ago, and I'm really proud of all that. But this is where I'm at and I just want to make sure our guys know that I couldn't wait to get back to our dugout.''
STARTING ANEW
Shaw made the first start of his 12-year career and was already campaigning for another.
''I'm trying to start again Sunday,'' he said.
Told that would probably put him up against the Rays and former Cleveland Cy Young winner Corey Kluber, he said: ''That would be awesome.''
Shaw's last professional start was in 2010 in Double-A. On Tuesday, he allowed two runs on three hits a hit batter and a walk while striking out two. He left with the Guardians leading 5-1 and runners on first and second with one out in the third.
The previous major league record for appearances before a debut start was David Robertson, who pitched 680 games in relief from 2008-21 before starting for the Rays against Miami.
''I'll take any records I can get,'' Shaw said.
BUMBLING BOSTON
The Red Sox committed their 10th error in eight games.
Yolmer Sanchez was flagged for an errant throw with the bases loaded in the fourth on Josh Naylor's grounder up the middle. Sanchez tried to flip it to the shortstop for the force at second but threw it away, allowing a second run to score.
TRAINER'S ROOM
Guardians: OF Oscar Gonzalez (strained rib cage muscles) went 0-for-2 with a pair of popups and a walk in a rehab assignment with the Double-A Akron RubberDucks. ... LHP Anthony Gose is still feeling discomfort in his strained triceps and will need another two weeks of rest.
Red Sox: Winckowski was hit on the rear end on Owen Miller's sharp grounder in the third. The ball ricocheted to shortstop Xander Bogaerts, who made the throw to first for the out. After a visit from the trainer, Winckowski remained in the game.
UP NEXT:
Red Sox RHP Nathan Eovaldi (4-3) faces Guardians RHP Cal Quantrill (7-5) in the third game of the four-game series.

Boston Red Sox fall into last place in AL East (half game behind Orioles) with loss to Cleveland on Tuesday

BOSTON — “Maybe you can win two in a row tonight,” legendary WBZ reporter Jonny Miller said to manager Alex Cora before the Red Sox played the Guardians on Tuesday.
“Maybe,” Cora replied.
It didn’t happen.
Not even the lucky yellow uniforms (6-0 this season entering Tuesday and 12-3 since being unveiled) could help Boston mount a two-game winning streak.
The Red Sox lost 8-3 to Cleveland here at Fenway Park.
Meanwhile, the Orioles won 5-3 over the Rays and so the Red Sox dropped into last place in the AL East. They are a half game behind Baltimore.
Boston hasn’t won back-to-back games since July 9-10 vs. the Yankees. It hasn’t won more than two games in a row during its ugly 6-16 July.
The Red Sox have been outscored 157-82 this month.
Starter Josh Winckowski, who Boston reinstated from the COVID-related IL before the game, lasted only 3 innings. He gave up five runs, all earned, six hits and one walk while striking out one.
The 24-year-old rookie allowed two homers, including a three-run blast to Nolan Jones that put the Guardians ahead 5-0 in the third inning.
Xander Bogaerts had three of Boston’s seven hits. He and Christian Vázquez delivered RBI singles in the third inning.

Boston Red Sox injury updates: Matt Barnes expected to make three more rehab outings this week for Portland

BOSTON — Could Matt Barnes finally return from the injured list next week?
Barnes, who has been on the 15-day IL since May 31 with right shoulder inflammation, will make another rehab outing for Double-A Portland on Tuesday in Hartford vs. the Yard Goats, manager Alex Cora said.
Cora said Barnes then likely will throw in back-to-back games for the Sea Dogs on Friday and Saturday.
The righty has a 7.94 ERA, 5.30 FIP and 1.71 WHIP in 20 outings (17 innings) for Boston this year.
Cora was asked if Barnes might return to the Red Sox next week. He answered, “I believe so. We’ll see.”
The 32-year-old Barnes, who is in the first year of a two-year, $18.75 million contract extension, pitched for Triple-A Worcester vs. Syracuse both Friday and Sunday.
He recorded two outs (both strikeouts) Friday while his fastball was at 94-95 mph. He didn’t allow a run but he gave up two hits and one walk.
He allowed two runs, both earned, on two hits, one walk and one hit by pitch Sunday.
Arroyo, Hill to start rehab assignments
Christian Arroyo “most likely” will begin a rehab assignment for Double-A Portland on Wednesday, Cora said.
Rich Hill, meanwhile, will make a rehab start for the Sea Dogs in Hartford against the Yard Goats tomorrow.
Arroyo, who is on the 10-day injured list with a left groin strain, faced Hill during the lefty’s three-inning simulated game Friday.
Hill is returning from a left knee sprain he suffered during his start in Chicago vs. the Cubs on July 1. Boston placed him on the 15-day injured list July 2.

RED SOX NOTEBOOK Alex Cora tries to look on the bright side concerning Red Sox injuries: ‘At least we know who’s hurt’ By Julian Benbow Globe Staff,Updated July 26, 2022, 7:00 p.m.
Working around the injuries that have decimated the Red Sox since the start of the month has been a chore for manager Alex Cora, to say the least.
But it could be worse. Almost a year ago, a COVID outbreak left Cora unsure who would be available from one day to the next.
“At least we know who’s hurt,” he said. “Last year, halfway through a game, they took the shortstop out of the game … because of COVID stuff.”
Since Rich Hill went on the injured list on July 2 with a left knee sprain, nine Sox have joined him.
Chris Sale’s fractured left pinkie is the most devastating injury, but as Cora assessed the damage, he was optimistic.
“Everyone’s feeling better,” Cora said.
J.D. Martinez, who had been sidelined because of back spasms, was back in the lineup, hitting cleanup, in Tuesday night’s 8-3 loss to the Guardians. He went 0 for 3 with three strikeouts.
Trevor Story (right hand contusion) took batting practice again Tuesday.
“He’s progressing, feeling better,” Cora said.
Christian Arroyo (groin strain) will likely start a rehab assignment Wednesday in Hartford with Double A Portland, along with Hill.
Matt Barnes (right shoulder inflammation) pitched a scoreless inning Tuesday night for the Sea Dogs. He’ll then have two days off, and then throw back-to-back games Friday and Saturday with the possibility of returning next week.
Cora said Rafael Devers (hamstring inflammation) and Matt Strahm (wrist contusion) were also feeling better.
The Sox are 6-16 in July. This seven-game homestand is an opportunity to reset before the Aug. 2 trade deadline, which is during a seven-game road trip.
“I’m not making excuses,” Cora said. “This is who we are, this is what we have, and we have to play better.” Back to basics
Cora said he turned the page on Jarren Duran’s mishap in center field last Friday night against the Blue Jays. Duran losing sight of a fly ball in the twilight was an ugly moment in a game that was already getting out of hand.
The larger concern for Cora was the Red Sox’ fielding issues as a whole this month. The Sox have committed 56 errors this season (12th in the majors), but 19 have come in July.
“It’s a hard one for me, but you go through stretches,” Cora said. “You’re just putting pressure on yourself and sometimes trying to do too much. You’ve just got to slow it down a little bit and get 27 [outs]. The value of 27 outs is real.”
Before Tuesday’s game, Cora had the team take extra fielding practice.
“Just fundamentals,” he said. “Catch the ball, throw the ball. It hasn’t changed. That’s the beauty of the game. We can talk about everything that’s new, but at the end of the day you have to catch it and throw it and get outs.” Missed opportunities
Last year, Bobby Dalbec was a .274 hitter with runners in scoring position. This season, he hasn’t been able to cash in at the same clip. He is 13 for 75 (.173) in 85 plate appearances with runners in scoring positions.
Dalbec had an opportunity in the fourth inning of Monday’s win, working a 3-and-1 count against Guardians starter Zach Plesac with runners on first and second and two outs. Dalbec fouled off a slider to run the count full, then struck out looking at a fastball that clipped the bottom of the zone.
Cora gleaned something from that at-bat.
“One thing about him, he knows the strike zone,” Cora said. “But there’s certain times that, yeah, that [3-2] pitch was borderline, but the 3-1 [pitch], he expanded.
“Sometimes he tries to do too much in those sort of counts — 2-0, 3-1. It’s just slowing down and recognizing the situation of who he is especially, because he can connect and it’s a three-run homer.”

Christopher Smith @smittyonmlb · 6h The Red Sox -- who are down 7-2 to the Guardians in the seventh innings -- have been outscored outscored 156-81 in July.
Alex Speier @alexspeier · 6h I was just starting to dig in on the Red Sox' worst single-month run differential. They're -75 for this July. Off the type of my head, I guessed Sept. 2012 was worse...and it was, if (and only if) you include the season-ending October games in NY that pushed it to -76.

Guardians @ Red Sox Wednesday, 27th July 2022 7pm @ Fenway
Quantrill 7-5/3.75
Eovaldi 4-3/ 4.30
Cleveland Guardians vs. Boston Red Sox Wednesday, July 27, 2022 at 7:10pm EDT Written by The Admiral
Cleveland Guardians (48-47) vs. Boston Red Sox (49-48)
Wednesday will see the continuation of a four-game series between the Cleveland Guardians and the Boston Red Sox, two teams who are battling to get into one of those final wildcard spots in the American League. Boston earned the victory in the first game of the series, winning 3-1 on Monday. This preview was written prior to the conclusion of Tuesday night’s game.
Entering Tuesday’s action, Cleveland finds themselves 3.5 games behind the Minnesota Twins for the AL Central lead and are 3.0 games out of the wildcard chase, tied with the Red Sox. They are 5-5 in their last 10 but have lost their last three entering Tuesday’s game.
The Red Sox were in a funk, going 1-9 leading in their last 10 games entering the series. That dropped them 3.0 games behind Seattle for the final wildcard spot in the AL. Boston enters as the favorite at -135 with the line set for Cleveland at +115. Boston has won four straight games against Cleveland and is 8-2 in the last 10 meetings.
Lack of Clutch Hitting Dooms Guardians in Opener The Cleveland Guardians left nine men on base and went 1-7 with runners in scoring position, falling to the Boston Red Sox on Monday, 3-1. Zach Plesac allowed three runs in 5.0 innings, then the Guardians bullpen was spectacular, tossing 3.0 scoreless innings. However, the team could muster just one run.
The Guardians offense has been solid the season, 16th in runs per game (4.44), but it has been a complete lack of power that has stopped this team from making a big run. Cleveland has hit just 74 home runs, 29th overall, and they are 19th in runs scored (414). They have been a little bit better in July offensively, hitting 18 home runs and batting .272 in 22 games.
Cleveland starts right-hander Cal Quantrill, who is 7-5 with a 3.75 ERA in 18 starts. Quantrill began the month with two tough outings, allowing 10 total runs in his first 10.0 innings, but he has been great over the last two, allowing two total runs in 11.0 innings. The right-hander faced the Red Sox once the season already, allowing two runs in 5.0 innings back on June 24. Quantrill is 0-1 with a 4.00 ERA in three career starts against Boston.
Slump Has Red Sox Desperate for Victories It is hard to imagine that just 16 days ago the Boston Red Sox were eight games above .500 and held the top spot for the AL wildcard. However, they have gone 2-9 since and are struggling to get back into the race, as three teams have passed them meaning they would be on the outside of the postseason looking in if the season were to end today.
The Red Sox took the first step in the right direction on Monday when they defeated Cleveland, 3-1. Nick Pivetta gave them 5.2 innings of solid work before his day was over, allowing one run while striking out six. John Schreiber earned the victory with 1.1 innings of scoreless relief and Garrett Whitlock closed off the contest, getting the final six outs for his second save of the season. Now they hope that Nathan Eovaldi can give them a similar performance. The right-hander is 4-3 with a 4.30 ERA in 14 starts. He was absolutely hammered in his last outing, giving up nine runs in 2.2 innings, and has given up 12 runs in 7.0 innings in July.
The Red Sox are going to need to supply some offensive support to win this game, and they are 12th in runs scored (4.61) and 17th in homeruns (93). The Red Sox offense has been pedestrian at best in July, hitting .234 with 24 home runs in 21 games.
Guardians at Red Sox Wednesday, at 7:10 PM EST Partly Cloudy According to Forecast.io, it's expected to be 77° F with a 0% chance of precipitation and 6 MPH wind blowing right to left in Boston at 7:10 PM EST. Hourly Forecasts: Weather.com Forecast.io
