Getting Story straight
Second baseman Trevor Story said there was a measure of relief in learning that the reason for his deliberate recovery from a right hand injury was a hairline fracture at the top of the hand.
==============================
If this was me, I'd expect a better diagnosis. If I were one of the writers, and got a chance to ask a real question, instead of dwelling on who struck out tonight, I'd be asking how this got missed, and how this got caught. They really shouldn't be missing these things.

Have a great night I think McGuire might be underrated. His stats with TO weren't awful with an OPS+ of 85. He plays defense. He's a lefty, so even if he doesn't hit much, he can platoon.

Jarren Duran's HR, 3 RBIs power Red Sox past Astros 3-2 AP
HOUSTON (AP) Boston starter Nathan Eovaldi was minutes away from a pregame meeting with catcher Christian Vazquez to go over the Houston scouting report when he learned that Vazquez wouldn't be competing with the Red Sox on Monday night because he had become a member of the Astros.
Eovaldi was able to shake off the surprise and disappointment that Vazquez had been traded and turn in a solid start for the Red Sox in a 3-2 win over the Astros.
''He means a lot to us,'' Eovaldi said of Vazquez, who was the longest-tenured player on the team. ''It's one of those friendships that's never going to be gone, even though he's not with us now. But it's definitely difficult having to say bye to him.''
Jarren Duran homered and drove in a career-high three RBIs, as the Red Sox overcame sloppy fielding early to get the victory on a day the Astros made a pair of important trades.
Along with Vazquez, Houston acquired first baseman Trey Mancini from the Baltimore Orioles in a three-team trade on the eve of the deadline.
''We're bringing in a couple quality guys, one guy that's been in the playoffs and one guy wanting to get to the playoffs,'' manager Dusty Baker said. ''Both of them are good players, both of them I heard are excellent teammates and veterans that can help our ball club ... both of them picked up quite a few games in the standings and I'm hoping that they're happy about the trade.''
Vazquez was in the Red Sox lineup before being scratched just minutes before the game. Now, with a move to the other clubhouse at Minute Maid Park, he'll try to help the Astros make another deep playoff push.
''When the news broke and it was true, it was sad,'' Eovaldi said. ''But, at the same time, you get prepared to go out there and get to do your job.''
Vazquez spoke briefly to reporters before being whisked away by a Red Sox public relations staffer before the trade was announced, but did not speak to the media after the game.
Asked how he felt about being traded to the Astros, he said: ''It's a business.''
Eovaldi (5-3) allowed four hits and no earned runs with six strikeouts in 6 1/3 innings to get his first win since June 8.
Houston led 2-1 after scoring twice, thanks to errors in the third inning.
The Red Sox still trailed by a run when Bobby Dalbec walked to start the fifth. There were two outs in the inning when Duran smacked his second homer of the season into the seats in right field to make it 3-2.
The 25-year-old Duran got the Red Sox on the board in the third inning when he drove in a run with a ground-rule double.
Houston starter Luis Garcia (8-7) yielded six hits and three runs in seven innings for his second straight loss.
''He was good, except for Duran,'' Baker said. ''Similar to us last week in Oakland where Tony Kemp killed us. He drove in all the runs tonight. That was the difference in the game.''
Martin Maldonado singled with one out in the seventh to chase Eovaldi. He was replaced by John Schreiber, and Jose Altuve grounded into a double play to end the inning.
Tanner Houck pitched a scoreless ninth for his seventh save.
The Astros went 1 for 8 with runners in scoring position while playing without third baseman Alex Bregman, who went on the paternity list Monday after his wife Reagan went into labor with their first child.
Dalbec doubled to open the third and scored on the ground-rule by Duran to put the Red Sox up 1-0.
Altuve reached on an error by third baseman Christian Arroyo with no outs in the bottom of the inning. Yuli Gurriel then reached on a fielder's choice by shortstop Xander Bogaerts, and Gurriel took second and Altuve went to third on an error by Bogaerts on the play.
The Astros tied it when Altuve scored on a sacrifice fly by Yordan Alvarez. A double by Aledmys Diaz came next to send Gurriel home and put Houston up 2-1.
TRAINER'S ROOM
Red Sox: LHP Rich Hill (sprained left knee) was activated from the 15-day injured list Monday, but the team hasn't said when he'll make his next start.
Astros: RHP Lance McCullers will make his third rehabilitation start for Triple-A Sugar Land on Tuesday night. McCullers, who has been out all season with a forearm strain, threw 52 pitches in three innings in his last start and is expected to pitch longer Tuesday. ... INF Taylor Jones was recalled from Sugar Land to take Bregman's spot on the roster.
UP NEXT
Houston's Cristian Javier (6-6, 3.26 ERA) opposes Kutter Crawford (2-3, 4.15) when the series continues Tuesday night.

HOUSTON -- On a day when trades -- including one that sent starting catcher Christian Vázquez across the way -- stole headlines, the Red Sox actually played a game. And they won it, marking the first time they have won two games in a row since the All-Star break.
Boston beat the Astros, 3-2, on a day Vázquez didn’t suit up for either team. Jarren Duran homered and drove in all three of Boston’s runs and Nathan Eovaldi pitched into the seventh inning as the Red Sox got back to .500 at 52-52 in the series opener at Minute Maid Park. Enter your email address here to receive the Fenway Rundown email newsletter in your inbox every Wednesday.
Facing tough righty Luis Garcia, the Sox got on the board first in the third inning. After Bobby Dalbec hit a leadoff double, Duran roped a pitch down the left-field line and hopped it over the fence. Sloppy defense from the Red Sox led to two runs for the Astros in the bottom of the third, as Christian Arroyo and Xander Bogaerts made back-to-back fielding errors before Yordan Alvarez tied the game with a sacrifice fly and Aledmys Diaz put Houston up 2-1 with an RBI double.
With two outs in the fifth, Duran lifted a two-run homer -- his second of the season -- to give Boston the lead. It left the bat with a 98.1 mph exit velocity and traveled 379 feet.
Eovaldi, in what might have been a showcase before Tuesday’s trade deadline, posted his strongest outing in months. He lasted 6 ⅓ innings, allowing two runs (both unearned) on four hits while striking out six. John Schreiber followed in relief and worked himself out of two jams; he got Jose Altuve to ground into an inning-ending double play in the seventh and struck out Jeremy Peña with two men on base in the eighth. Tanner Houck then pitched a 1-2-3 ninth to record his first save since June 25.
The Red Sox have won back-to-back games for the first time since July 9-10 and just the second time since July 1.
Crawford pitches Tuesday
Rookie righty Kutter Crawford (2-3, 4.15 ERA) will try to keep the winning ways going Tuesday night in the middle game of the Red Sox-Astros series. Right-hander Cristian Javier (6-6, 3.26 ERA) will be on the mound for Houston. First pitch is set for 8:10 p.m. ET.

RED SOX NOTEBOOK Rafael Devers expected back in time for Tuesday’s Red Sox game in Houston By Julian McWilliams Globe Staff,Updated August 1, 2022, 9:35 p.m.
HOUSTON — Barring any setbacks, the Red Sox will reinstate Rafael Devers from the injured list prior to Tuesday’s game against the Astros.
Devers went on the injured list on Aug. 23 after feeling a tweak in his right hamstring against the Blue Jays the day prior. Devers recently took live batting practice against Michael Wacha and appeared healthy moving around.
The third baseman went to the IL batting .324/.379/.602 with 22 homers and .981 OPS. Devers was second to Trevor Story on the team with 55 RBI, and his 52 extra-base hits ranked third in the American League entering Friday’s play.
In 10 games without the All-Star starter, including Monday’s 3-2 victory, the Red Sox have gone 4-6 and averaged just 3.6 runs per game. Rich Hill activated, but won’t start in Houston
Rich Hill was activated off the injured list Monday, after spending most of July on the shelf following a left knee sprain he suffered on July 1 in Chicago.
Hill made just one rehab appearance, three innings for Double A Portland, in which the lefthander struck out five. He said recently that the team’s goal was for him to start Tuesday, but manager Alex Cora named Kutter Crawford and Brayan Bello to pitch the remaining two games against the Astros.
The Sox are still trying to figure out how they will utilize Hill during this series, with the possibility the 42-year-old is traded before 6 p.m. Tuesday. Clubhouse murmurs
In the minutes before Christian Vázquez was dealt to the other dugout Monday, the longest-tenured Red Sox was in a group of players playing dominoes alongside Xander Bogaerts, the clubhouse quiet as Chaim Bloom began making moves.
“I’ve been saying all along throughout this losing streak or tough month, we show up, we prepare,” Cora said as part of an uncharacteristically short pregame meeting with the media. “We go out there and play hard and that’s what we have to do tonight.”
During the ESPN broadcast, reporter Buster Olney said he was told privately by some Red Sox players that “they’ve been unsupported. Players wondering, what are we doing? Players wondering, are there more moves to come?”
J.D. Martinez, along with Monday starter Nate Eovaldi among the more likely Red Sox still to be dealt, told reporters after Sunday’s victory that he felt like the pressure of the team’s possible breakup contributed to its struggles.
“I think the pressure’s been like that since we came back from the All-Star break,” Martinez said. “Everybody feels like it’s kind of fighting for your life, fighting to keep the band together. I think it might be what’s hurt us, honestly. But, whatever. It is what it is.” Related: Christian Vázquez, Jake Diekman dealt as Red Sox make trio of Monday moves Paxton’s progression
James Paxton is still just throwing bullpens and has not advanced to participating in live batting practice as he continues his return from Tommy John surgery. Paxton suffered a slight setback in May before the Sox restarted his progression. Ideally, he would be further along by this point, but that hasn’t been the case. “You gotta be careful,” Cora said. “You know, this is not only for this year with him. We need this guy healthy to be part of the organization next year, so it’s important to do it right. And there’s gonna be a few bumps in the road to recovery and we’re gonna be very cautious about it” . . . In addition to adding Vázquez, Houston acquired Baltimore slugger Trey Mancini before the game in a three-way trade, sending speedy outfielder Jose Siri to Tampa Bay, and later lefty reliever Will Smith from Atlanta in exchange for starter Jake Odorizzi.

Red Sox @ Astros Tuesday, 2nd August 2022 8pm @ Minute Maid Park
Crawford 2-3/4.15
Javier 6-6/3.26
Boston Red Sox vs.Houston Astros Tuesday, August 2, 2022 at 8:10pm EDT Written by Nathaniel Reeves
The Boston Red Sox and Houston Astros will continue a high-profile three-game series on Tuesday night at Minute Maid Park. Monday's series opener finished by a 3-2 final in favor of the Red Sox, who pulled off the upset as a +153 underdog. Boston gets back to .500 at 52-52, while Houston remains comfortably atop the AL West at 67-37.
These teams met at Fenway Park back in mid-May, with the Red Sox taking two of three.
Red Sox back at .500 as pitching shines On a day that saw them both deal starting catcher Christian Vazquez while adding to the roster elsewhere, the Red Sox picked up a huge win to open this current series in Houston as they continue to hang around three games back in the Wild Card race despite a horrendous month of July. It was all about Jarren Duran on Monday, as the promising young outfielder opened the scoring with an RBI double in the third before launching a two-run homer in the fifth.
Nathan Eovaldi went 6.1 strong innings in the win, allowing two unearned runs on four hits and two walks while striking out six. Tanner Houck shut things down in the ninth inning for his seventh save. Bobby Dalbec added a double, a walk and two runs scored.
The Red Sox remain down some on the money line for the season while going 54-50 on the run line. Overs are 46-49-9 for Boston, with four of its last five games going under the betting total.
Boston's offense has been solidly above average for the season overall at 4.54 runs per game on a .726 team OPS. Pitching has been much more of a problem, ranking seventh-worst with a 4.33 collective ERA including a mark of 4.27 from a struggling bullpen.
Rafel Devers, who is expected to return from a strained hamstring on Tuesday, has been terrific with a .324/.379/.602 line, 22 homers and 55 driven in. Xander Bogaerts is also having another strong season with a .316/.392/.459 line, eight homers and 45 driven in.
Kutter Crawford will make his 16th apparence and seventh start of the year, having gone 2-3 with a 4.15 ERA and 50 strikeouts across 47.2 innings. The 26-year-old rookie went 5.2 innings against the Cleveland Guardians on Thursday, allowing one run on three hits and no walks, striking out two in a solid performance.
Second baseman Trevor Story (fractured wrist) and utilityman Enrique Hernandez (strained hip flexor) remain out. The rotataion is down Chris Sale (fractured finger), James Paxton (Tommy John surgery) and Michael Wacha (shoulder inflammation). Relievers Matt Barnes (shoulder inflammation), Tyler Danish (elbow discomfort), Matt Strahm (wrist contusion) and Josh Taylor (back discomfort) are also on the IL.
Reinforcements on the way for Houston offense The Astros have been active in front of the trade deadline with deals to acquire Trey Mancini and Christian Vazquez, with Monday night's loss to Boston showing the lineup upgrades are needed. Yordan Alvarez hit a sac fly in the third before Aledmys Diaz added an RBI double later in the inning, but that would be the only scoring for the Astros all night as they finished with only five hits.
Luis Garcia took the loss, allowing three runs on six hits and one walk while striking out five in five innings. Diaz had a multi-hit game, while Yuli Gurriel added a double and a run.
The Astros are up a huge amount on the money line for the season with their strong outright record while going 53-51 on the run line. Overs are just 38-63-3 for the Astros after their last two games both went under the betting total.
Houston is surprisingly only a middling scoring offense at 4.48 runs per game despite posting a .743 OPS to rank in the top five. This is one of the elite pitching staffs in the game, ranking second with a 3.04 combined ERA including a mark of 2.79 from baseball's best bullpen.
Yordan Alvarez has been a monster at the plate, batting .310/.417/.670 with 30 homers and 70 driven in. Jose Altuve is also putting together antoher terrific season with an .868 OPS, 19 homers and 57 runs scored.
Cristian Javier will make his 20th apparence and 16th start of the season looking to bounce back from a loss to the Oakland Athletics last Wednesday, when he allowed three runs on five hits and one walk over five innings, striking out six. The 25-year-old has generally been impressive this year, going 6-6 with a 3.26 ERA and 121 strikeouts over 88.1 total innings.
Outfielder Michael Brantley is dealing with shoulder discomfort, while catcher Jason Castro is sidelined by knee discomfort. Starting pitcher Lance McCullers Jr. is nearing a season debut as he recovers from a strianed flexor tendon. Relievers Josh James (strained lat) and Blake Taylor (elbow discomfort) are out. Third baseman Alex Bregman will miss Tuesday's game as he's on the paternity list.

Jeff Passan @jeffpassan · 5m The Houston Astros are finalizing a deal to acquire catcher Christian Vázquez from the Boston Red Sox, sources tell ESPN.
The Red Sox are playing in Houston tonight, so Vázquez presumably will just walk around the stadium to join his new teammates. And the Sox's sale begins.
I am not happy about this.
It was hard to watch Vazquez in the very brief interview he had before the game. I'm sure he will end up being happy with the Astros, but he was obviously in shock at the timing/suddenness of the move and very emotional. Sad to see him go.
