Bill Koch @billkoch25 · 6h None of the Ozuna home runs have registered on Baseball Savant. Conservative estimate -- at least 1350 feet combined.
That last one -- I've never seen a ball hit the camera platform in a game or in BP. That is destroyed. #RedSox

Pete Abraham @peteabe · 5h Sox aren't going to overextend any relievers who could serve a purpose next season.
Medical staff/front office are making some guys off limits on certain days based on usage.
So it's Hart in a 4-2 game in the 7th and Roenicke left to explain what turns into a 10-3 loss.

Kyle Hart has 15.55 ERA through 4 appearances; Boston Red Sox rookie has given up 24 hits in first 11 major-league innings Updated 2:56 AM; Today 2:56 AM
By Chris Cotillo | ccotillo@MassLive.com
BOSTON -- Red Sox rookie lefty Kyle Hart’s relief debut Tuesday night didn’t go much better than his first three big-league starts.
In two innings against the Braves, Hart allowed six earned runs on seven hits as the Red Sox lost, 10-3. Marcell Ozuna hit two of his three monster home runs off Hart as Atlanta stretched its lead from 4-2 to 10-2 against the lefty.
Through four major-league appearances, Hart owns a 15.55 ERA. The 27-year-old southpaw has allowed 34 baserunners (24 hits and 10 walks) in 11 major-league innings and 21 runs (19 earned).
The lefty’s struggles have the Red Sox considering the possibility of demoting him to the club’s alternate site in Pawtucket.
“We’ll talk about it, we’ll figure out what to do,” said manager Ron Roenicke. “I don’t want to ever see a guy not in a position where we don’t think he can do well. Those are the discussions we’ll have to have to make sure we’re doing what’s best”
Hart, a 19th-round pick out of Indiana who posted solid numbers at every level of the minor leagues since being drafted in 2016, completed his unlikely journey to the majors when he was called up to start against the Rays on Aug. 13. Though the Red Sox won two of his three starts, he didn’t record more than 11 outs in any of those games and went a full week without pitching before being summoned for the seventh inning Tuesday.
Ozuna’s second homer of the night was the only damage Hart allowed in his first inning of work, which ended when he tweaked his hip throwing Austin Riley out at first on a ground ball back to the mound. The eighth inning was a different story, as four straight Braves hit singles before Ozuna hit a deep blast to dead center field that gave the Braves a 10-2 lead.
“He’s just not spotting the ball well,” Roenicke said. “Left some balls up in the zone. A tough start for him.”
Of the 11 pitchers who have made starts for the Red Sox in 2020, Hart is the only homegrown rookie. Boston attempted to give him a long leash to cement a spot in the big-league rotation but it’s beginning to feel like a demotion is imminent.
In a lost season, Roenicke wants to make sure the club doesn’t overreact to a small sample size before sending someone down.
“When you’re in the taxi squad, that’s your dream, to get up here,” Roenicke said. “We want to make sure we’re still giving him the opportunities to go out and do well and I want to make sure we do that.”

Mike Kickham starts for Boston Red Sox on Wednesday; lefty hasn’t appeared in majors since 2014 Updated 2:36 AM; Today 2:36 AM
By Chris Cotillo | ccotillo@MassLive.com
BOSTON -- Left-hander Mike Kickham will start for the Red Sox on Wednesday against the Braves, manager Ron Roenicke said after Tuesday’s 10-3 loss.
Kickham was called up Monday along with Yairo Munoz and Robinson Leyer after the Red Sox traded Kevin Pillar and Josh Osich. The 31-year-old last pitched in the majors on Sept. 14, 2014 with the Giants, making it almost six years since he last appeared in a big-league game.
The Red Sox entered Tuesday knowing Kickham would pitch Wednesday but were unsure if he’d start the game or follow an opener in a “bulk” role. Boston used five relievers to cover six innings in Tuesday’s loss, forcing Roenicke to tab Kickham as the starter for the series finale.
“We were thinking we were going to try to open with somebody and maybe go to him, but we used everybody we were thinking about doing that (with) tonight,” Roenicke said. “We’ll open with him tomorrow.”
Kickham attended Missouri State before the Giants took him in the sixth round of the 2010 draft. He spent parts of four seasons in the Giants’ system before being called up to the majors for the first time in 2013.
In 14 games (three starts) in 2013 and 2014, Kickham posted a 10,98 ERA in 30 ⅓ innings. He has spent time with the Cubs, Mariners, Rangers, Marlins and Giants (again) since being cut after the 2014 season and joined the Red Sox on a minor-league contract in December.
Kickham will be the 12th different pitcher to start a game for the Red Sox this season. Lefty Martin Perez, who is dealing with a blister, will likely start Thursday night in the opener of a five-game series against the Blue Jays. Zack Godley will be in line to start one of the two games of Friday’s doubleheader and injured righty Nathan Eovaldi is set to return Saturday.

Braves @ Red Sox Wednesday, 2nd September 2020 730pm
Robbie Erlin 0-0/ 6.00
Has completed 4 innings in each of his 3 starts. Will likely be targeted to get thru Boston's line up twice.
Mike Kickham
Has not pitched in the majors since 2014. Air raid sirens expected to be activated during the game.
Red Sox hope to have Martinez back for finale vs. Braves FLM
The Boston Red Sox could get a big piece of their lineup back on Wednesday when they host the Atlanta Braves in the finale of a three-game set at Fenway Park.
Left fielder J.D. Martinez has been sidelined since being hit on the left hand by a pitch in Sunday's win over the Washington Nationals. Martinez could be helpful as the Red Sox try to salvage a game from the three-game series.
The Braves won 10-3 on Tuesday and clinched their first series win over Boston since 2004.
"He's doing better, for sure," Boston manager Ron Roenicke said. "Hopefully back in the lineup" on Wednesday.
Martinez has not played up to his high standards this season. He's batting only .208 -- his lifetime average is .292 -- and he has three homers and 15 RBIs. He had 36 homers and 105 RBIs in 2019.
Atlanta (21-14) will start left-hander Robbie Erlin (0-0, 6.00) in the series finale. The Red Sox (12-24) moved their scheduled starter, Martin Perez, back at least one day because of a blister, and were expected to use an opener on Wednesday, possibly lefty Mike Kickham.
Kickham, who made the team as a non-roster invitee, was promoted from the alternate training site on Monday. He has not pitched in a major league game since Sept. 13, 2014, against Los Angeles.
Erlin has enjoyed mixed success since joining the Braves on Aug. 9 after being released by the Pittsburgh Pirates. Erlin has failed to register a quality start in three outings, but the Braves are 2-1 with him on the mound.
Like many of the other candidates who have auditioned in the rotation, Erlin is averaging only four innings per start. His stuff has been good -- he's got 20 strikeouts in 18 innings -- but needs to pitch deeper into games.
In his last start against Philadelphia on Friday, Erlin allowed four runs in four innings and surrendered two home runs.
The Braves have enjoyed the renewed offensive punch shown by third baseman Austin Riley. After hitting only .150 through the first 18 games, Riley has found a groove. Since Aug. 17, Riley is batting .378 (17-for-45) with seven extra-base hits and 13 RBIs.
"It's definitely a weight lifted off my shoulders, because I wasn't putting up good at-bats earlier in the season," Riley said. "I just wasn't getting hits. Now that the hits are falling, it's a big confidence booster. Just got to keep it rolling."
Marcell Ozuna had the hot bat for Atlanta on Tuesday. The designated hitter was 3-for-5 with six RBIs and raised his batting average to .295.
Ozuna tallied the first three-homer game of his career -- and the first ever by a National League player at Fenway Park -- and recorded his second multi-homer game of the season. The last Brave with a three-homer game was Matt Kemp in 2017 against Milwaukee.
The Braves are expected to give outfielder Ronald Acuna Jr. (right hamstring tightness) another day off and try to get him back in the lineup for the opener of Friday's three-game series against Washington. He has not played since leaving Sunday's game in the second inning.

Jason Mastrodonato @jmastrodonato · 6h Ron Roenicke said Red Sox played a "nice ballgame" and they were in it for six innings. This is one patient and understanding fella in the Boston dugout. Not enough fire in him, IMO. Not that a manager has to have a blow up with every loss, but I don't think he is lighting a fire under his players.
