Bill Koch @billkoch25 · 7h It's demoralizing watching this #RedSox bullpen. You can only imagine how the players might feel privately.
Everything after June has carried some major 2020 vibes

Bill Koch @billkoch25 ·
#RedSox are 54-58.
Boston needed this game to split the series. Darwinzon Hernandez, Ryan Brasier, Austin Davis and Kaleb Ort came out of the home bullpen.
Nothing else necessary.

RED SOX NOTEBOOK The last month has been no walk in the park for the Red Sox pitching staff, especially with two outs By Julian McWilliams Globe Staff,Updated August 10, 2022, 8:17 p.m.
A 9-7 loss at the hands of the Braves Tuesday evening was yet another reminder that this version of the Red Sox don’t have enough to contend.
Sox pitchers accounted for seven walks, marking the seventh time this year that the staff has handed out seven or more free passes in a contest. Their season high was 10 walks on July 1 against the Cubs.
That many bases on balls certainly isn’t a recipe for winning — heading into Wednesday night’s 8-4 series finale loss to Atlanta, the Sox were 0-12 when they issued six or more walks.
Compounding the issue, the timing of those walks has been jarring. Look at Tuesday, for instance: Six of the Sox’s seven walks came with two outs.
Rich Hill gave Atlanta’s Robbie Grossman a free two-out trip in the third inning. Ryan Brasier issued Matt Olson a two-out walk in the fifth. In the sixth, Matt Barnes tallied two quick outs but walked Orlando Arcia. The next batter, Michael Harris II made Barnes pay with an RBI double, tying the contest, 5-5. After a two-out walk to Ronald Acuña Jr., Barnes’s evening was finished. In the sixth, Hirokazu Sawamura relinquished two walks. You get the drift, both of them came with two outs.
Tuesday’s loss highlighted an issue that has plagued the Red Sox for much of the summer. The staff has issued 56 two-out free passes since July 1, the most in baseball during that span.
With two outs in the fourth inning Wednesday against the Braves, Nick Pivetta walked Eddie Rosario. The next batter, Marcell Ozuna, pummeled a three-run homer.
“I think at one point, 2-2 [count], the at-bat has to finish,” manager Alex Cora said before Wednesday’s game. “With two outs, OK, you took your shot [to strike the batter out], but when it’s 2-2, just finish it. Get closer to the strike zone and we’ve been way off the strike zone.”
Some of the Sox’ issues with two-out walks, Cora noted, have to do with the Sox missing strike throwers Matt Strahm, Nate Eovaldi, and Garrett Whitlock. Eovaldi spent much of June and part of July on the injured list, as did Whitlock. Strahm, meanwhile, went on the IL toward the middle of July where he still remains.
Injuries have forced the Sox to lean on young pitchers who still are learning the strike zone. Nonetheless, execution, or lack thereof, during those two-out moments unquestionably plays the biggest role.
“I think a lot of times it tends to be more mentality,” said pitching coach Dave Bush. “Just be able to stay calm in the moment whether it’s two outs or two strikes, staying within yourself. And part of it is staying focused, yeah, you got two quick outs but you got to stay locked in.”
Finding that balance can be arduous, especially when it’s a tight game like the Sox faced Tuesday. Some Sox pitchers have a tendency to let their guard down after registering the first two outs, while others try to force their way to a third out.
As the Sox go through what seems a never-ending rut, Bush reminds his pitchers to stick to their strengths.
“You just want them to focus on what they do best,” Bush said. “Like, ‘This is my strength. I’m gonna do this right now. It doesn’t matter if it’s two outs. It doesn’t matter if it’s two strikes. It doesn’t matter if guys are on base. This is what I do best.’ That’s when you can execute.”
Hernandez, Wacha, Danish on the mend
Kiké Hernández (right hip flexor strain) played in a rehab game for Double A Portland on Wednesday. He went 1 for 2 and played five innings in center field. He will play again Friday. Reliever Tyler Danish (right forearm strain) pitched a scoreless inning for Portland . . . Michael Wacha (right shoulder inflammation) came out of Tuesday’s rehab outing feeling good and could rejoin the team this weekend against the Yankees . . . Rich Hill will pitch out of the bullpen, beginning tomorrow, for the remainder of the week. Cora suggested it would be a temporary move after Hill volunteered, knowing the team was short on bullpen arms . . . Tanner Houck (lower back inflammation) is still undergoing testing and the team is still gathering information … Eric Hosmer (knee contusion) is still considered day to day. He was out of the lineup Wednesday . . . Braves top outfield prospect Vaughn Grissom made his big league debut with Arcia on the injured list. Vaughn’s first big league hit came in the seventh inning, a two-run homer off Darwinzon Hernandez, stretching his team’s lead to 5-1.

Alex Speier @alexspeier · 7h Nick Pivetta allowed 3 runs in 6 innings. The Red Sox bullpen has allowed 4 runs in 5 outs. It's 7-4, Atlanta. Red Sox bullpen has a 7.16 ERA since the All-Star break, the worst (by more than a run) in MLB.
Pete Abraham @peteabe · 7h Nothing wrecks a team faster than bullpen issues. Puts pressure on the starters to go deeper and on the lineup to score more runs. Everybody is impacted.

Pete Abraham @peteabe · 8h Hard to take the #RedSox seriously about their intent to make the playoffs considering:
1. They subtracted from the bullpen at the deadline.
2. They keep running Darwinzon Hernandez out there. (11 ER last 3 IP).

Alex Speier @alexspeier · 6h The Red Sox lose to Atlanta, 8-4, concluding a two-game sweep. The Sox are 54-58, 17 games out of 1st, 5 games out of the Wild Card. They have a -36 run differential, worse than every AL team except KC, Detroit, Oakland.

Christopher Smith @smittyonmlb · 5h Red Sox relievers have a 5.85 ERA (155 ⅓ innings, 101 earned runs) since the start of July.
Red Sox starters have been worse with a 6.46 ERA (164 ⅓ innings, 118 earned runs) since July 1. That’s after Boston starters had a 2.91 ERA in 26 starts in June. The bullpen also had a 3.20 ERA in June before collapsing. Injuries have played a role but still ....
The Red Sox are 11-25 with a negative-96 run differential since July 1.

Red Sox Stats @redsoxstats · 8h During his @weei interview today, Cora said they're trying to get Duran to be moving on contact and are hoping better reactions make up for his poor routes. This would seem to be the JBJ/Hernandez model, but their reactions aren't just good, they're insane, and then they adjust.
On another defensive note, he said it was nice to have Hosmer because they were playing Franchy a lot and "Bobby has struggled defensively for a year and a half."

Baltimore Orioles vs.Boston Red Sox Thursday, August 11, 2022 at 7:10pm EDT Written by The Admiral
Baltimore Orioles (58-52) vs. Boston Red Sox (54-57)
It is a great battle in the AL East on Thursday when the Baltimore Orioles travel to Fenway Park to take on the Boston Red Sox. This is a battle of two teams that have had a long-standing rivalry, but now it is heated up even more, with both clubs battling for one of the final wildcard spots in the American League.
This is the first time that both clubs have been relevant in more than a decade with Baltimore entering Wednesday night’s contest holding the final wildcard spot in the league while Boston is 4.5 games out. The Orioles have been red-hot over the last 23 games, going 15-8 while Boston has gone ice cold, 7-17 in their last 24.
Despite the struggles, oddsmakers still place Boston as the favorite at -135 while the Orioles are at +115. The total is set at 9.5 (over: -120, under: +100).
Orioles Surge into Wild Card Picture The Baltimore Orioles have been the story in Major League Baseball since the start of July, going 23-10 in that span. That has moved this team into the wildcard picture, and they could be the team that no American League club wants to face come playoff time.
This Baltimore club looks like an entirely different team. They are allowing 4.24 runs per game, 11th overall, but the team ERA over the last 23 contests is 3.63. Right-hander Austin Voth has been one who has been unbelievably impressive since the start of July. In five July starts he posted a 2.75 ERA, allowing six runs in 19.2 innings. He gave up three runs in 5.0 innings in his start against Pittsburgh (August 6), but has now given up three or fewer runs in 14 straight appearances, including holding clubs to two or fewer runs in 12 of those outings. Voth is 2-1 with a 5.53 ERA overall. He has cut his ERA nearly in half since May 30 (10.13).
Baltimore is averaging 4.31 runs per game, 19th overall, however, they have stepped up their game over the last 23 contests, scoring 107 runs, an average of 4.65 runs per game. The Orioles are 15th in homeruns (115) and have a .698 OPS.
Red Sox in Danger of Missing Post-Season While Baltimore has been searching, the Red Sox are falling on hard times. On July 1, Boston was nine games over .500 and in the second wildcard spot in the American League. However, they now find themselves in last place in the AL East, 4.5 games out of the wildcard chase entering Wednesday’s action.
The Boston pitching staff has completely collapsed over the last month, posting a 6.46 ERA in their last 24 games. That includes a 1.60 WHIP and a .297 opponent batting average, both worst in baseball. Right-hander Josh Winckowski gets the start in this contest, and he has been one of the few who has mostly been good for the Red Sox. The right-hander has allowed 13 total runs over his last four starts, a span of 19.0 innings, but five of those came in one outing against Cleveland (July 26). Winckowski is 5-5 with a 4.68 ERA in 10 starts.
Boston is 12th in runs per game (4.55) and sixth in team batting average (.253). Through the first eight games of August, the team has struggled, as the Red Sox are hitting .229 with 10 home runs in eight games, scoring just 32 runs. This comes after they hit .238 in July with 27 home runs in 27 games.
Orioles at Red Sox Thursday, at 7:10 PM EST Cloudy According to Forecast.io, it's expected to be 74° F with a 0% chance of precipitation and 6 MPH wind blowing right to left in Boston at 7:10 PM EST. Hourly Forecasts: Weather.com Forecast.io

BOSTON — Kiké Hernández began a rehab assignment with Double-A Portland on Wednesday. He went 1-for-2 and played five innings in center field.
He will work out with the Sea Dogs in Portland on Thursday, then play in another rehab game Friday.
“He feels good. He’s going to do everything with them today,” manager Alex Cora said here at Fenway Park on Thursday.
Hernández hasn’t appeared in a major league game since June 7 in Anaheim. He’s on the 60-day IL with a right hip flexor strain.
The 30-year-old, who is eligible for free agency at the end of the season, is batting just .209 with a .273 on-base percentage, .340 slugging percentage and .613 OPS in 51 games for the Red Sox this year.
Cora said Hernández will need more than just two rehab games before being activated from the IL.
Other injury updates:
~ Red Sox top pitching prospect Brayan Bello might make a rehab start this weekend for Double-A Portland. The righty (left groin strain) is eligible to return from the 15-day injured list next Friday.
~ Reliever Tyler Danish (right forearm strain) pitched a scoreless inning in a rehab game for Portland on Wednesday. He will pitch for Portland again Friday and Sunday.
“He should be available at one point next week,” Cora said.
~ Trevor Story (hairline fracture near wrist) swung a bat Wednesday. He’ll swing again Friday.
“Tomorrow I think is Tee and soft toss, 30 and 30 (pitches) with the regular bat, not with the fungo,” Cora said. “So he’s feeling better swinging it. So that’s good.”
~ Matt Strahm (left wrist contusion) likely will throw a live batting practice at Fenway on Friday.
~ Michael Wacha (right shoulder inflammation) likely will be activated to start Sunday for the Red Sox vs. the Yankees.
~ Rob Refsnyder (right knee sprain) might begin a rehab assignment this weekend at Portland.

Alex Speier @alexspeier · 2h Cora: Kiké Hernández staying with Portland for now. He’ll play tomorrow, and will need more rehab time after that. Matt Strahm may have a live bullpen session tomorrow. Brayan Bello will start rehab assignment this weekend. Wacha should pitch for Sox this weekend.
Hosmer is back in the lineup. Cora has been impressed by his personality. Hosmer evidently told Cora that he didn’t want to step on any toes in the clubhouse. Cora’s response: “Bro, there’s no toes here.”

Red Sox Stats @redsoxstats · 7h Since the trade deadline, Bogaerts and Martinez have combined to go 11 for 57, 6 RBI, 2 BB, 19 K. It is a lot more than "since the trade deadline". In his last 160 ABs, JD has exactly *1* HR, and combines that with a .181 average. The writers tear apart Duran, and he's been playing twice as good as JD. And I love Bogaerts, but it might be about time for the writers to mention that X has a .708 OPS over his last 158 ABs. Between him and JD, they have combined for 4 HRs in their last combined 318 ABs. I just looked at the RS last 28 days on offense. Guess who leads/tied for the lead in runs scored, HRs, and RBIs? Dalbec.
