Christopher Smith @smittyonmlb
Jarren Duran is with the Red Sox in Pittsburgh, I’m told. Yolmer Sánchez expected to be optioned to Worcester as both Rob Refsnyder and Kiké Hernández return. Jaylin Davis was already optioned yesterday Good job by Davis. Nothing special, but probably enough to get one more camp invite, and a few more service days for a pension. It maybe doesn't sound like a lot, but for the fringy guys that put a lot of their life into the dream, it's nice to walk away with something.

RED SOX NOTEBOOK Kiké Hernández’s imminent return raises questions about leadoff spot and center fieldBy Peter Abraham Globe Staff,Updated August 15, 2022, 7:44 p.m. If the Sox remain committed to seeing what rookie center fielder Jarren Duran is capable of, Hernández could go back to the utility role he has excelled in. One could argue the lead-off role, though I think Kiki gets it back automatically. But I wouldn't spent one minute of time thinking about whether Kiki or Duran will be starting. I'd be stunned if Duran was anything else but giving Kiki the occasional rest and being a PR, and very occasional PH. Duran should of been sent down after the game that he wanted to head into the stands and fight a fan.

Red Sox Stats @redsoxstats · 4h Pretty rough taking 3 out of 4 from Baltimore and New York and not gaining ground in the wild card race and actually losing a half a game to the team directly ahead of you. This team is going to need to find a major winning streak at some point. Trading blows won’t cut it. Fair enough. We really need a sweep at PT. I know we can't win every game against the weaker competition, but we have to win almost all of them. And we can't do that without more hitting. This year has shown me that this team does not have them in them one of the SP will meltdown or the Gas Can Gang certainly will the fielding, base running......

Pete Abraham @peteabe · 1h Kiké Hernández just said the hip/core injury he had led to a hematoma in one of his abdominal muscles and 16 ccs of blood was drained out through a needle in his back. His entire right side felt like “a switch turned off.” That’s what led to his long IL stint.
Tanner Houck has a disc issue per a specialist. He’ll get a week of treatment back in Boston then they’ll decide what comes next. Doesn’t sound promising.
Sox also DFA’d Yolmer Sanchez. Hernández and Refsynder activated

This looks promising
Alex Speier @alexspeier · 20m Kiké Hernández is playing SS today with Xander Bogaerts getting an extra day to rest after he slammed a foul ball off his lower shin over the weekend. Hernández didn’t bring an IF glove on the trip so had to borrow Story’s. He looks … puzzled by it as he takes pregame infield.

Chris Cotillo @chriscotillo · 32m Still no moves or lineup from the Red Sox. Unclear what’s going on. But doesn’t sound like Bogaerts to IL is an option.

Pete Abraham @peteabe · 8m You roster move/lineup stans: they always make sure guys coming of the IL are OK before they make official moves and post the lineup. Just chill a minute.
As Alex Cora said: Hernández and Refsynder were activated off the IL. Sanchez DFA'd. Davis was optioned yesterday.

I don't know why Cora left Davis in for the 4th hitter, a righty. Bringing him in to face a L-R-L made sense. But with a .856/.521 split, facing another righty makes no sense to me. He faced his three hitters, and should be done.
I get that he wants to preserve the BP, but the best way to do tat is to get to the 9th up 5-0.

Only one game, but the Barnes sighting was very encouraging. 3 straight 2-K no walk appearances. There isn't enough time left in the year for me to get comfortable with him, but it would be real nice to get another 9th inning option.

Pivetta throws 7 shutout innings, Red Sox beat Pirates 5-3 AP
PITTSBURGH (AP) Nick Pivetta pitched one-hit ball over seven shutout innings for his first win since June 24, and the Boston Red Sox scored four runs in the first inning on their way to a 5-3 victory over the Pittsburgh Pirates on Tuesday night.
The Pirates' only hit off Pivetta came on Ben Gamel's two-out single in the first inning on a soft liner to left-center. Pivetta (9-9) struck out six and walked three while throwing 99 pitches and retiring his last nine batters.
In his previous eight starts, Pivetta had gone 0-4 with a 7.24 ERA.
''It was good,'' Pivetta said. ''I was in the strike zone the whole game, which was nice. They had a few walks, which was unfortunate but (catcher Reese McGuire) did a good job back there. We were able to communicate really well and I was able to be proficient in the strike zone.''
Pivetta's outing came after the Red Sox allowed just five runs while taking two of three games from the AL East-leading New York Yankees over the weekend.
''Building on starts, I think it's really important,'' Pivetta said. ''We just can feed off each other and compete against each other. I harped on this earlier (in the season) but the most important thing is putting up zeroes for your fellow starting pitchers so you can build off that and continue to move forward.''
The first six Red Sox batters reached in the first inning against Mitch Keller (4-9), who lasted just two innings. He was removed because of right shoulder fatigue. Keller wound up being charged with five runs, four earned, while allowing five hits and three walks with one strikeout.
Keller had pitched into the sixth inning in each of his previous seven starts.
''(Pitching coach Oscar Marin) and I were talking, and we didn't like the way he was moving down the mound,'' Pittsburgh manager Derek Shelton said of Keller. ''As good as his tempo's been and the way he's been attacking, he just did not look the same tonight. He said he didn't have any pain, but we didn't want to risk it.''
Alex Verdugo, Christian Arroyo and Eric Hosmer hit consecutive RBI singles and Kike Hernandez followed with a sacrifice fly in the first.
The Red Sox added another run in the second to make it 5-0 when center fielder Bryan Reynolds dropped Verdugo's two-out fly ball for an error that enabled Tommy Pham to score.
Pham had two hits and scored two runs as the Red Sox won the fourth time in five games.
However, the Red Sox were held hitless over the last seven innings by relievers Chase De Jong, Austin Brice and Manny Banuelos.
''We need to be better than that,'' Boston manager Alex Cora said. ''The quality of at-bats got worse throughout the game. I'm not saying we got lucky because we put up some good at-bats early on, especially in the first inning, but we can't stop. That way you get to the bullpen and all that, but at the end of the day, we'll take it.''
The miscue ended Reynolds' 190-game errorless streak. Reynolds also had the first ejection of his career in the eighth inning when he was tossed by home plate umpire Roberto Ortiz for arguing a called third strike.
Gamel immediately followed with a three-run double to draw the Pirates within 5-3. He had two of Pittsburgh's three hits as the Pirates lost for the ninth time in 11 games.
John Schreiber got the final out in the eighth. Matt Barnes pitched a 1-2-3 ninth for his third save in five chances.
HOLD THE PHONE
Pirates infielder Rodolfo Castro was suspended for one game by Major League Baseball on Tuesday for having a cellphone in his back pocket during a game last week.
The penalty, which included an undisclosed fine, had been set to take effect Tuesday night when the Pirates hosted Boston. The 23-year-old Castro appealed and can play until the process is complete.
''I just really want MLB to hear my version of the story and make sure they understand my heart behind everything,'' Castro said through an interpreter.
Castro's phone flew from his pocket when he made a head-first dive into third base at Arizona on Aug. 9.
TRAINER'S ROOM
Red Sox: Hernandez (right hip flexor/abdominal muscle hematoma) was activated from the 60-day injured list and INF/OF Rob Refsnyder (sprained right knee). came off the 15-day IL. Hernandez had been out since June 8 and Refsnyder since July 30. Hernandez started at shortstop in place of Xavier Bogaerts, who fouled a ball off his left foot last weekend, and went 0 for 3 with the sac fly and two strikeouts. INF Yolmer Sanchez was designated for assignment. . RHP Tanner Houck (lower back inflammation) has an issue with a disc in his lower back. He will undergo treatment the rest of this week then be reexamined by a spine specialist next week.
Pirates: 3B Ke'Bryan Hayes (mid-back muscle strain) was placed on the 10-day IL, retroactive to Aug. 13, and INF Kevin Padlo was recalled from Triple-A Indianapolis. Padlo started at first base and went 0 for 3.
UP NEXT
Red Sox: LHP Rich Hill (4-5, 4.75 ERA) will make his third start Wednesday night since missing a month with sprained left knee.
Pirates: RHP Roansy Contreras (3-2, 3.78 ERA) will be recalled from Triple-A Indianapolis to make his first major league start since July 7.

Boston Red Sox blitz Pirates for 4 first-inning runs in 5-3 win; Nick Pivetta throws 7 shutout innings

The Red Sox blitzed the Pirates early Tuesday night, pounding them for four first-inning runs. Behind a dominant performance from starter Nick Pivetta, that’s all Boston would need.
The Sox opened their six-game road trip on a high note, beating the last-place Pirates, 5-3, in the club’s first game in Pittsburgh since 2014. Pivetta allowed just a single hit and struck out six Pirates batters to improve to 9-9 on the season. After the Pirates made things interesting with a three-run eighth, Matt Barnes recorded his third save of the season.
It didn’t take long for the Sox’ offense to get to Pirates righty Mitch Keller in the first, as Boston’s first six batters reached and four of them scored. Tommy Pham led things off with a single, then Keller issued back-to-back walks to Rafael Devers and J.D. Martinez. Alex Verdugo made it 1-0 with an RBI single, then Christian Arroyo added another run as the Sox went station-to-station. Eric Hosmer’s pop-up hit off the glove of shortstop Oneil Cruz and fell in to make the score 3-0. In Kiké Hernández’s first at-bat since June 7, he put Boston up four runs with a sacrifice fly to deep left.
In the second, Verdugo lifted a Keller pitch to deep center for what looked like an easy out, but it glanced off Bryan Reynolds’ glove and allowed Pham to score from second for Boston’s fifth run. Keller lasted just two innings.
Pirates righty Chase De Jong shut down Boston’s offense from there, tossing four hitless innings. But Pivetta kept Pittsburgh’s poor lineup in check and became the second Sox starter in a row to record seven shutout innings after Michael Wacha did it against the Yankees on Sunday night. Things got interesting in the bottom of the eighth when Austin Davis let three straight batters reach, then John Schreiber gave up a three-run double to Ben Gamel. But Schreiber got Josh VanMeter to fly out and end the threat, then turned things over to Barnes, who recorded a 1-2-3 ninth, striking out two. The Red Sox didn’t have a hit after the second inning.
The Red Sox improved to 58-59 with their fourth win in five games. Boston is now 7-9 in interleague play this season. Enter your email address here to receive the Fenway Rundown email newsletter in your inbox every Wednesday.
Hill looks to keep winning ways going
Left-hander Rich Hill (4-5, 4.75 ERA) will aim to secure Boston’s third straight win when he takes the mound Wednesday night. Rookie righty Josh Winckowski is expected to follow him in relief. Right-hander Roansy Contreras (3-2, 3.78 ERA) will pitch for the Pirates with first pitch scheduled for 7:05 p.m. ET at PNC Park.
