Again, I am happy the writers are finally waking up, but this isn't an August thing. In addition to the stats I posted for Bogaerts, JD has a .512 OPS since 6/17. It is not two weeks of August. It is two MONTHS. Maybe u should have a coffee they have been saying this team was flawed since STI am talking about the writers missing the fact that three guys have been missing and the Boston writers have missed it completely,

Hernández, Arroyo, Wacha power Red Sox past Orioles 4-3 AP
BALTIMORE (AP) Kike Hernandez hit a two-run homer, Christian Arroyo added a key RBI double in the ninth inning and Michael Wacha pitched scoreless ball into the sixth as the Boston Red Sox beat the Baltimore Orioles 4-3 on Saturday.
The teams split the first two games of the series, and the finale will be played in Williamsport, Pennsylvania, on Sunday
The Orioles slipped to 2 1/2 games behind Tampa Bay in the race for the third and final American League wild-card spot.
''This is a good ball club, the Orioles,'' Arroyo said. ''Late in the game, against anyone, it's always good to push in some insurance runs across there. It wound up being huge.''
One day after scoring a season-high 15 runs, Baltimore was held scoreless until the seventh when rookie Kyle Stowers drove in a run on a fielder's choice and Jorge Mateo scored on a wild pitch by John Schreiber that cut the lead to 3-2.
Boston added an important run in the ninth with Arroyo's RBI double, completing a 3-for-5 day. Arroyo has nine hits over the last four games.
''Right now, I'll be calling him `Cal Ripken.' Just keep going, kid,'' Red Sox manager Alex Cora said of Arroyo.
Garrett Whitlock allowed a run on a fielder's choice, but got the final six outs for his fifth save of the season.
''We had a really tough time getting a rally going against him,'' Orioles manager Brandon Hyde said. ''Good to see us make a run late, like usual, but we just came out a run short today.''
Wacha (8-1) made his second start since being reinstated from the IL on Aug. 14. He allowed four hits with four strikeouts and one walk over 52/3 innings, lowering his ERA to 2.28.
''I was just trying to get as deep as I could,'' Wacha said. ''I know we used some of our bullpen guys out there yesterday in some extended roles. Today, the goal was to stick to our plan, go out and attack these guys and hopefully get them out.''
The Red Sox took a 1-0 lead in the fifth on a run-scoring single by Alex Verdugo off Kyle Bradish, who had managed to strand runners on first and third to minimize the damage.
Hernandez hit a two-run shot that stayed just inside the foul pole in left field in the sixth inning that extended the lead to 3-0. Hernandez has five RBIs in three games since returning from the IL. His last homer came against the Orioles on May 29.
Bradish (1-5) allowed three runs and nine hits with six strikeouts over 5 2/3 innings.
TRAINER'S ROOM
Red Sox: Tommy Pham was held out of the lineup after leaving Friday's game with low back tightness. ''He might push to play tomorrow. We'll see how he feels,'' Boston manager Alex Cora said. . 1B Eric Hosmer left Saturday's game with back spasms.
Orioles: OF Cedric Mullins was held out of the lineup with a sore shin after fouling a ball off his leg a night earlier.
UP NEXT??
Red Sox: RHP Nick Pivetta (9-9, 4.28 ERA) will pitch the finale.
Orioles: RHP Dean Kremer (5-4, 3.58 ERA) is 0-3 with a 9.45 ERA in three career starts against Boston.

The Red Sox and Orioles combined for 25 runs on 37 hits Friday. The two teams went scoreless into fifth inning Saturday.
Michael Wacha tossed 5 ⅔ scoreless innings, allowing four hits and one walk while striking out four. He helped the Red Sox win 4-3 over the Orioles at Camden Yards on Saturday.
The righty has thrown 12 ⅔ scoreless innings in two starts since returning from the IL. He improved to 8-1 with a 2.28 ERA in 15 starts.
Garrett Whitlock locked it down with a six-out save. He’s 5-for-6 in save opportunities.
Boston took a 1-0 lead in the top of the fifth inning when Alex Verdugo delivered an RBI single to right field after both Kevin Plawecki and Christian Arroyo singled with one out.
Kiké Hernández put the Red Sox ahead 3-0 with a 373-foot two-run homer to left field in the sixth.
The Orioles cut it 3-2 in the seventh after Jarren Duran’s costly throwing error.
Ramón Urías and Jorge Mateo singled off John Schreiber to lead off the inning. Duran missed the cutoff man after Mateo singled, allowing both runners to advance into scoring position.
Urías scored on a groundout to second and Mateo scored on a two-out wild pitch.
Arroyo’s RBI double in the ninth put the Red Sox ahead 4-2 after Duran bunted for a single with one out.
Arroyo has three three-hit games in his past four starts. He’s 29-for-73 (.397) with eight extra-base hits in 19 games since returning from the injured list July 30.

Franchy Cordero to join Boston Red Sox as 27th man in Williamsport for MLB Little League Classic

Christopher Smith | csmith@masslive.com
Franchy Cordero will join the Boston Red Sox in Williamsport on Sunday as their 27th man for the MLB Little League Classic against the Orioles.
The Red Sox and Orioles both will be allowed a 27th-man on their active roster for Sunday’s game.
Cordero, a first baseman/outfielder, makes sense as Eric Hosmer is unlikely to be available tomorrow.
Hosmer left the Red Sox’s game against the Orioles on Saturday because of low back pain. Manager Alex Cora described it on NESN as back spasms.
Cordero was removed from Triple-A Worcester’s game after five innings and left Polar Park to meet up with the Red Sox. He has 10 RBIs in his past three games, including today.

RED SOX NOTEBOOK Nothing Little about Sunday’s Red Sox series finale in Williamsport By Julian McWilliams Globe Staff,Updated August 20, 2022, 6:24 p.m.
BALTIMORE — The Red Sox are going to Williamsport.
The final game of their series with the Orioles on Sunday will be Major League Baseball’s annual Little League Classic, played at Muncy Bank Ballpark at Historic Bowman Field, about 15 minutes from the site of the ongoing Little League World Series.
Manager Alex Cora has never been to Williamsport, Pa. His brother Joey Cora, third base coach for the Mets, went two or three years ago and said it was a great experience. Related: Setting for Sunday night’s Red Sox-Orioles game should evoke childhood memories
“You just have to go there with an open mind,” Alex Cora said. “The kids, they’re looking forward to meeting us and I’m looking forward to hanging out with them.”
Cora’s father, José, founded the Little League chapter in Alex’s hometown of Caguas, Puerto Rico, in 1969. Cora said the foundation of his father’s program was not to build big leaguers but big league citizens.
“There’s been a lot of big leaguers that came from our program, but like my mom says, you know, a lot of professionals that came from our program, too. That’s the most important thing,” Cora said.
New England’s representative in this year’s World Series, from Middleboro, was eliminated on Saturday night. Jason Varitek played in the 1984 Series, leading his Altamonte Springs, Fla., team to a United States championship.
Allowed a 27th roster spot for Sunday, the Sox recalled Franchy Cordero, who is hitting .370/.426/.674 this month with Triple A Worcester. Dim times for Josh Taylor
It doesn’t sound as if Josh Taylor (lower back strain) will make his first 2022 appearance for the Red Sox any time soon. Taylor continues to go through his progression, Cora said, but with just 41 games remaining after Saturday, seeing Taylor at the big league level this year seems increasingly unlikely.
“He has good days and bad days. He hasn’t been able to actually take the next step physically and that doesn’t help mechanics-wise,” Cora said. “It’s all health related. He hasn’t been able to have like three positive days in a row.”
Taylor went out on two rehab assignments this season. Both times, he was shut down.
“He’s a guy that thought he was going to be part of this, and let’s see what happens in the future,” Cora said. “But as of now, he’s just going through his progression.” Subtracting additions
Eric Hosmer left Saturday’s contest in the fifth inning with what the Sox ultimately called back spasms. He had been hit by a pitch in the second and grounded out in the fourth; Bobby Dalbec replaced him at first base. Hosmer is day-to-day. The Sox will see how he feels heading into Sunday, but may opt to rest him given the travel to Williamsport on Sunday morning. Hosmer’s departure came after Tommy Pham was out of the lineup following his removal from Friday’s game with lower back tightness. Pham said he feels it more when he runs than when he swings, and that an injured list stint “is not an option.” He’s expected to play Sunday . . . Brayan Bello (left groin strain) threw 80 pitches Friday in a rehab start for Worcester and looked sharp. The team will make a decision this week on whether to keep Bello on the major league roster.

Red Sox notebook: Christian Arroyo a perfect fit at leadoff spot Arroyo had three more hits Saturday
By Jason Mastrodonato | jason.mastrodonato@bostonherald.com | Boston Herald PUBLISHED: August 20, 2022 at 8:13 p.m. | UPDATED: August 20, 2022 at 8:18 p.m.
Alex Cora made a lineup change and saw instant results on Saturday in Baltimore.
The Red Sox manager put the red-hot Christian Arroyo atop the order, then hit Alex Verdugo in the two-hole, Xander Bogaerts third and moved Rafael Devers down to fourth, a lineup adjustment the Sox first tried on Friday night.
Saturday, Arroyo had three hits and Verdugo added two more in a 4-3 win over the Orioles.
The Sox have scored 14 runs in those two games since moving Devers behind the slumping Xander Bogearts in an attempt to get him some lineup protection.
Devers isn’t doing well either, hitting .151 with three homers over his last 19 games.
But getting Arroyo to the top of the lineup, something done out of necessity after Tommy Pham was held out due to back pain, seems to be the pivotal move.
The Sox have a 24th-ranked .292 on-base percentage out of the leadoff spot this year and Cora has yet to find a guy who can hold it down. To see Arroyo get on base three times out of that spot Saturday could be a sign of things to come.
“When he’s the main guy, we can play him a lot,” Cora told reporters on NESN after the game. “When he runs into trouble is when he’s the utility guy and he plays here and there, then comes back and he runs into issues.
“Right now I’m calling him Cal Ripken Jr.”
With Trevor Story on the injured list since July 12 with a wrist injury, Arroyo has been the primary second baseman since he returned from his own injury on July 30.
In 19 games since, he’s hitting .397 (29-for-73) with eight extra-base hits.
“He was a high pick, and talented, yes, very talented,” Cora said. “He can hit the ball out of the park, hit for average, he’s a good defender, all that. The problems are the injuries.” Two lost to back injuries
The Sox lost both their key trade deadline acquisitions, Pham and Eric Hosmer, to back injuries this weekend.
Pham was held out of Saturday’s game and is questionable to play on Sunday, while Hosmer started on Saturday but was pulled early due to back spasms.
Cora said Hosmer probably won’t play on Sunday, when the Sox travel to Williamsport, Pa., for the series finale against the Orioles in the 2022 MLB Little League Classic.
Both teams will get a 27th man for that game, and the Sox are calling up Franchy Cordero from Triple-A Worcester, Cora said. Eovaldi on track
Nathan Eovaldi (hip tightness) threw a bullpen session Saturday and is expected to make his next start on Tuesday “unless something weird happens,” Cora told reporters in Baltimore. He had his last start skipped and has been throwing with a decrease of 3 mph off his average fastball velocity since returning from the injured list. Old time celebration
In what could be one of his final public appearances before retiring from his 20-year broadcasting career, former Red Sox pitcher and Hall of Famer Dennis Eckersley will be in Cambridge on Monday night for the 28th annual Abbot Financial Management Oldtime Baseball Game at St. Peter’s Field.
Eckersley and former Sox infielder Lou Merloni will headline the game, which occurs annually to support local charities.
This year’s game is in honor of the late Sox pitcher Jim Corsi, who died in January. The game is free to attend but donations will be directed to the Young-Onset Colorectal Cancer Center at the Dana-Farber Cancer Institute.
Eckersley and Merloni aren’t playing in the game this year, but will appear for a pregame ceremony and make opening remarks.
The game is run by longtime Herald columnist Steve Buckley and is typically played by local college players, media members, former professionals and relatives of well-known Boston baseball families. The players wear old-time flannel uniforms, many of which were worn in MLB games a long time ago.

Red Sox @ Orioles Sunday, August 21rst 7pm @ Muncy Bank Ball Park
Pivetta 9-9/4.28
Kremer 5-4/3.58
Boston Red Sox vs. Baltimore Orioles Sunday, August 21, 2022 at 7:10pm EDT Written by Mark Ruelle
The Boston Red Sox and the Baltimore Orioles wrap up their three-game weekend series in Baltimore on Sunday night on ESPN's sSunday Night Baseball. The game will be played in Williamsport, PA and will be MLB's 5th annual Little League Classic. The long-time AL East rivals are battling both for position in the AL East standings but also for a shot at one of the three AL Wildcard spots. On the mound on Sunday night will be righty Nick Pivetta (9-9, 4.28) of the Red Sox taking on Dean Kremer (5-4, 3.48) of the Orioles. Game time is set for 7:00pm EST.
Still Hope in Beantown The Red Sox' disappointing season still has hope with a quarter of the season left to go. Boston is still mathematically alive in the AL Wildcard race and still has games remaining with many of the other contenders. The return of Kike Hernandez to the Boston lineup and the improvement of Boston's pitching suddenly has the Fenway Faithful thinking the playoffs are not out of reach. In the first two games of this crucial series with Baltimore, it has been a tail of two vastly different styles. In game one, Boston had 19 hits and scored 10 runs but allowed 18 hits and 15 runs as the Orioles took the opener 15-10. In game two, Boston got another excellent start from Michael Wacha and a timely two-run home run from Hernandez to take a 4-3 win. The two teams now travel to Williamsport, PA for the series rubber match.
Was it too little, too late for the Red Sox or can they still make some noise? The solid returns from starters Michael Wacha and Rich Hill suddenly have the Red Sox thinking that they have time to do this. In addition, the team's bullpen has been bolstered by the return of Garrett Whitlock to his closer role after starting for the first half of the season and the renewed velocity from former closer and all-star Matt Barnes. If Whitlock and Barnes can fortify the backend of the Sox bullpen, a late run is not out of the question. On the mound hoping to keep the Sox hopes alive on Sunday will be Nick Pivetta. Pivetta evened his record to 9-9 with a strong one-hit start against the Pirates this week. In his last five games, he is 1-2 with an ERA of 3.45. He has given up 29 hits in 28.2 innings pitched in that span with 26 strikeouts and 11 walks.
Baltimore Battling The Orioles continue their bid to make the American League playoffs for the first time since 2016. The Orioles have been one of the best teams in baseball since May and have done so without a dominant starting staff or a top-tier superstar in their lineup. In the first two games of this series, the Orioles offense has been a mixed bag. In the opener on Friday night, the O's pounded out 18 hits and five home runs in a 15-10 win. On Saturday, the Orioles' bats were kept in check as Boston rebounded with a 4-3 win. The Orioles will now play host again, but this time in Williamsport, PA in the Little League Classic, to wrap up the series on Sunday night.
The Orioles have made frequent roster moves as they continue to position moving parts to stay in the playoff race, likely a couple of years ahead of management's schedule. The Orioles have been particularly strong at home this season, over ten games above .500 entering this series. At home, the Orioles have traditionally been an above-average hitting team but this season, it is the team's pitching that has excelled at home. Prior to this series, the Orioles have a solid 3.40 ERA at Camden Yards this season. On the hill on Sunday night will be Dean Kremer. Kremer is 2-3 in his last five starts with an ERA of 5.03. At home this season, he is 2-2 with a 3.41 ERA in six starts. Kremer is 0-1 in one start against Boston this season with an ERA of 6.35 ERA.
Red Sox at Orioles Sunday, at 7:10 PM EST Cloudy According to Forecast.io, it's expected to be 78° F with a 24% chance of rain and 7 MPH wind blowing right to left in Baltimore at 7:10 PM EST.
