Red Sox @ Rays Monday, 5th September 2022 4pm @ Trop
Wacha 10-1/2.56 vs
Patino 1-1/3.95
Boston Red Sox vs.Tampa Bay Rays Monday, September 5, 2022 at 4:10pm EDT Written by Blake V. Boston will try to extend its last-gasp effort at a playoff spot when it faces Tampa Bay on Monday afternoon. The Red Sox have rattled of five consecutive wins, but they are still well behind in the American League Wild Card race. Tampa Bay currently occupies one of those AL Wild Card positions and is coming off a 2-1 loss to the Yankees on Sunday.
Wacha on pace for career-low ERA Boston has been on four separate three-game losing streaks during the second half of the season, which has pushed the Red Sox well out of a playoff position. They are trying to make a late push at a spot in the postseason over the past week, winning a game against Minnesota and then four against Texas over the weekend. The Red Sox are on a six-game road trip that concludes in Baltimore this coming weekend. They are still 7.5 games back of Toronto for the final AL Wild Card spot. There are three other teams ahead of them that are still outside of the playoff hunt as well, so there is a very low chance for them to make a run. The Red Sox have been a phenomenal offensive team, ranked third in the majors in batting average (.260). Shortstop Xander Bogaerts leads the way with 151 hits, while second baseman Rafael Devers has 25 home runs. They will be facing a Tampa Bay pitching staff that ranks third in the majors with an ERA of 3.27. Right-handed pitcher Michael Wacha is going to start for Boston on Monday. He picked up a win over Minnesota on Wednesday, allowing two runs on four hits and one walk while striking out seven across six innings. Wacha has a career-low strikeout rate this season, but he is on pace for career-best marks in ERA (2.56) and WHIP (1.02).
Rays recall Patino from Triple-A Tampa Bay appeared to be in serious danger of missing the playoffs when it fell to just five games above the .500 mark on Aug. 12, but the Rays have gone 16-5 in their 21 games since then. They swept a two-game series at Miami early last week before winning the first two games of their series against the Yankees. Tampa Bay was unable to complete what would have been a massive sweep, losing in a 2-1 final on Sunday. The Rays could have pulled within three games of the AL East lead, but they are now five games back of New York. They have 3.5 games of cushion to work with in the AL Wild Card standings, though. The Rays were ranked outside the top 20 in batting average for most of the season, but their recent hot stretch has moved them up to No. 18 (.241). Left fielder Randy Arozarena leads the team with 128 hits, while third baseman Yandy Diaz has 122 base knocks. Arozarena and third baseman Isaac Paredes are tied for the team lead in home runs with 18 each. They are facing a Boston pitching staff that is No. 25 with an ERA of 4.51. Right-hander Luis Patino is going to start for Tampa Bay on Monday. He was optioned to Triple-A on Aug. 19 and allowed nine runs across 9.2 innings in two minor-league appearances. Patino was recalled for this start, though—he is 1-1 with a 3.95 ERA in the majors this season.

Injuries & Moves: Dalbec out, Casas in September 4th, 2022 Share
Keep track of the Red Sox’s recent transactions and injury updates throughout the season.
LATEST NEWS Sept. 4: 1B Triston Casas promoted to Red Sox; 1B Bobby Dalbec optioned to Triple-A Boston's No. 2 prospect, Casas arrived as part of a flurry of moves. Casas, a left-handed batter, hit .273 with 11 homers and 38 RBIs in 72 games for Triple-A Worcester. Dalbec, who hit 11 homers but managed just a .211 average, was sent to Worcester. RHP Josh Winckowski also joined the Red Sox to start Sunday's game, while RHP Kutter Crawford (right shoulder impingement) was placed on the 15-day injured list, retroactive to Thursday. RHP Tanner Houck (lower back) was moved to the 60-day injured list.
"He considers himself an everyday player, so he’s going to get a chance to play," Red Sox manager Alex Cora said of Dalbec. "The at-bats were very limited here, even without Casas here, and it was getting hard to get at-bats because of what other guys are doing. Just to go down there and play, I think it’s going to benefit him.”
Sept. 4: RHP Nick Pivetta aiming to make next start Pivetta, the lone pitcher on the Red Sox to make all his starts this season, had to leave Friday night's game against the Rangers with a left calf contusion. The injury occurred when Pivetta was hit by a 91.4 mph grounder off the bat of Leody Taveras. However, Pivetta made enough progress that he is planning to throw a bullpen session on Monday. If that goes well, he could be cleared to take his regular turn in the rotation on Wednesday.
INJURY UPDATES 10-day and 15-day IL RHP Kutter Crawford (right shoulder impingement) Expected return: Mid-September Crawford was scratched from his start on Sept. 4, and he was subsequently placed on the IL, retroactive to Sept. 1. The right-hander has gone 3-6 with a 5.47 ERA in 21 games, including 12 starts.
"We feel like he’ll be right back as soon as he is eligible to come off the IL," said Red Sox manager Alex Cora. "It’s something that we have to take care of him on this one and do everything that we have to do to get him back on the mound, but there’s no major issues. I know we’ve been through this road before, but we do believe -- I think for the Kansas City series, right around there is when he comes out. He should be available around that time.” (Last updated: Sept. 4)

Rays look to creep closer to division lead, host Red Sox FLM
Rays look to creep closer to division lead, host Red Sox
The Tampa Bay Rays did enough to inch closer to the New York Yankees in the American League East race.
The Rays hope to do enough to avoid letting another team move closer to them in the AL wild-card race Monday afternoon when they host the Boston Red Sox in the opener of a three-game series in St. Petersburg, Fla.
Tampa Bay is the AL's second wild-card team with a one-game lead over the Toronto Blue Jays, who visit the Baltimore Orioles for a doubleheader Monday to open a four-game series. The Rays also are five games behind the New York Yankees for the lead in the AL East.
The Rays saw their five-game winning streak end Sunday afternoon when Shawn Armstrong allowed Aaron Judge's 53rd homer two pitches into the game, and the offense did little in a 2-1 loss to the Yankees.
David Peralta had two of the six hits, but Tampa Bay went 1-for-7 with runners in scoring position and struck out 12 times, including a game-ending called third strike on Yandy Diaz with two on.
"I felt like we had momentum a couple of times throughout the game," Tampa Bay manager Kevin Cash said. "We just couldn't get anything going after a guy or two got on base and we kind of leave him stranded."
Despite Sunday's loss, the Rays are 20-9 since Aug. 3.
"If we can win series, we're going to find ourselves in a really good spot," Cash said.
Two of Tampa's losses during its run occurred Aug. 26-27 in Boston when the Red Sox won the first two meetings of a three-game series.
The Red Sox lost the first two games of a series in Minnesota but are on their first five-game winning streak since a seven-game winning streak back in June.
Boston heads into its final series with the Rays 7 1/2 games behind Toronto for the final wild-card spot while also trailing Baltimore, the Twins, Cleveland and the Chicago White Sox.
During its winning streak, Boston has scored 34 runs.
On Sunday, the Red Sox completed a four-game sweep of the visiting Texas Rangers when Trevor Story hit a three-run homer while Xander Bogaerts had three hits for his eighth straight multi-hit game. Bogaerts is 18-for-32 (.563) with a homer and 10 RBIs during that stretch.
"Keep winning series, that's the most important thing," Boston manager Alex Cora said. "We're playing good defense right now, we're playing good baseball."
Top prospect Triston Casas also made his major league debut in place of veteran first baseman Eric Hosmer, whose back issue may keep him out for the rest of the season.
"We'll use him the right way," Cora said. "He's going to play almost every day."
Tampa Bay will turn to Luis Patino (1-1, 3.95 ERA) in the first game of the series. He picked up a win against the Kansas City Royals in his most recent outing, allowing four hits in 5 2/3 scoreless innings while walking two and fanning four.
Patino is 1-0 with a 3.86 ERA in two career starts against the Red Sox.
Boston will counter with Michael Wacha (10-1, 2.56), who is 7-0 with a 2.65 ERA in his past nine starts. He continued the winning streak Wednesday when he allowed two runs on four hits in six innings of a 6-5 win in Minnesota.
Wacha is 2-3 with a 6.75 ERA in five career starts against the Rays.

Red Sox Stats @redsoxstats · 2m Bogaerts is hitting .500/.531/.773 during his 11-game hot streak. In that stretch he has a .526 BABIP, 68% ground ball rate and 4 infield hits. He's having a very good year and the way he's got there has been bizarre. I have no clue where the free agency forecasts are heading.

Half the time, when someone is going good, it is because of a heavy BABIP and 1-2 warning track shots making it over the wall. It's still a good streak, and a lot of times, there is a mental aspect to hot streaks. I'd like to see him win the batting title, even if it makes it more expensive for us.

Pete Abraham @peteabe · 46m Connor Wong drew three walks on Sunday.
The last Red Sox rookie catcher to draw three walks in a game was Carlton Fisk on Aug. 30, 1972.
Before that it was Jim Pagliaroni in 1961.
