Chris Cotillo @chriscotillo · 1h Kaleb Ort is going on the restricted list before today’s game. He is believed to be the only one.
Darwinzon, Winckowski and Mata are with the Sox in Toronto if they want a pitcher. Duran and Ronaldo Hernández available for position players.
Two players who previously missed series due to vaccination rules made the trip to Toronto with the Red Sox. Jarren Duran (taxi squad) and Kutter Crawford (IL). Of course, ban on unvaxxed players ends tomorrow.
To clarify: They wouldn't have made the trip last night if they were still unvaccinated. Kaleb Ort will join the Sox tomorrow when rules change.

Ian Browne @ianmbrowne · 51m Michael Wacha will make his final start of the season on Sunday. That had been left TBD for whatever reason. Also, bench coach Will Venable and hitting coach Pete Fatse will make out the lineup for Saturday and Sunday's games. Cora will manage the games.
Why have two coaches make out the lineup for Saturday and Sunday? “I’ve just had enough of this," quipped Cora. "No, I think it’s a good exercise to give you the information and go from there. It’s not going to be something radical, I hope."
Sounds like, at a minimum, Rafael Devers (Dominican), Alex Verdugo (Mexico), Trevor Story (USA), and Kiké Hernández (Puerto Rico) will all be playing in the World Baseball Classic. Xander Bogaerts also, but we don't know if he'll be property for the Red Sox at that time.
Cora mentioned the club will follow the training programs of those players closely this offseason because they will need to be ready quicker.

Guerrero homers, wild-card Blue Jays rout Red Sox 9-0 AP
TORONTO (AP) Vladimir Guerrero Jr. and George Springer homered, Alek Manoah pitched six innings and the playoff-bound Toronto Blue Jays beat the Boston Red Sox 9-0 on Friday night.
Raimel Tapia also connected for the Blue Jays, who clinched an AL wild-card berth Thursday when the Red Sox beat the Baltimore Orioles. Toronto had a clubhouse celebration after the game Friday.
''This party was scheduled whether we won or lost,'' Manoah said. ''For me, the biggest thing was let's have a good time, but with a win.''
Toronto pounded out 13 hits in its ninth shutout win of the season.
''You can't really write it any better,'' interim manager John Schneider said.
Toronto (88-69) leads the AL wild-card race, ahead of Seattle and Tampa Bay. The Blue Jays went 18-10 in September. They're 14-3 against the Red Sox this season.
''They're changing rules, not divisions,'' Boston manager Alex Cora said. ''We're going to face all these teams and we've got to do a better job. They've had their way against us.''
Boston is 23-48 against AL East opponents. The Red Sox (75-82) are assured of their first losing record in a 162-game season since going 78-84 in 2015. Boston went 24-36 in the pandemic-shortened season of 2020.
Guerrero hit a two-run shot off Canadian-born right-hander Nick Pivetta (10-12) in the third inning, his 31st. Tapia homered off Tyler Danish to begin the sixth, his seventh. Three batters later, Springer hit a three-run homer, his 25th.
Manoah (16-7) allowed two hits, struck out four and walked two, his eighth consecutive start allowing two earned runs or fewer. The right-hander has won his past four decisions, and his ERA of 2.24 is fourth-lowest in the majors.
''He's really good,'' Red Sox manager Alex Cora said. ''With him, it's not six innings, three runs. It's six innings, one run. You see the ERA, you see the numbers, he's been a horse for them.''
Manoah didn't allow a hit through the first four innings, but Abraham Almonte reached on a one-out single in the fifth when Manoah was late breaking for first base on Almonte's grounder down the first base line.
''I read it wrong,'' Manoah said. ''I thought it was foul by a wide margin.''
The next two Red Sox batters flied out.
Jarren Duran reached on a bloop single to begin the sixth, but Rafael Devers followed by grounding into a double play.
Left-hander Yusei Kikuchi pitched the final three innings for his first career save.
''That's really cool for him,'' Schneider said. ''You saw the bullpen, they were up on the fence wanting him to do it.''
Blue Jays shortstop Bo Bichette went 2 for 4 with a walk, giving him 48 hits in September. It's the most ever by a Blue Jays player in a calendar month, breaking Tony Fernandez's mark of 47 hits in June 1986.
Pivetta allowed four runs, three earned, and six hits in five innings as Boston lost for the first time in four games.
''The breaking ball wasn't there today,'' Cora said. ''The fastball towards the end was good but I felt like the whole night he wasn't able to have his curveball.''
ROSTER MOVES
Boston put unvaccinated RHP Kaleb Ort on the restricted and recalled Duran from Triple-A Worcester.
Ort is expected to join the Red Sox in Toronto on Saturday, the first day of October, with the expiration of a Canadian requirement that prevents foreign nationals who aren't vaccinated against COVID-19 from entering the country.
GOT IT ALL
Guerrero's homer went 447 feet and had an exit velocity of 117.5 miles per hour, making it the second hardest-hit home run of his career. On April 10 against Texas, he hit one that came off the bat at 117.9 miles per hour. Friday's second-deck blast was the hardest-hit home run allowed by a Red Sox pitcher since the introduction of Statcast in 2015.
''It looked like a line drive in the gap and then it just kept going,'' Manoah said. ''It was crazy.''
UP NEXT
RHP Brayan Bello (2-7, 4.39 ERA) starts for the Red Sox on Saturday against Blue Jays RHP Ross Stripling (9-4, 3.16 ERA). Bello posted a 1.65 ERA in five September starts.

Red Sox’s Alex Cora won’t make lineup Saturday, Sunday; Will Venable, Peter Fatse will be in charge

TORONTO — Red Sox manager Alex Cora is passing off his lineup duties to bench coach Will Venable and hitting coach Peter Fatse on Saturday and Sunday.
“They’re going to make the lineup the next two days,” Cora said Friday here at Rogers Centre. “So let’s see what they have. I know who’s going to have the off days already this weekend. But they’re going to construct the lineup. So we’ll see what they come up with.” Enter your email address here to receive the Fenway Rundown email newsletter in your inbox every Wednesday.
Why not have a little fun? The Red Sox were eliminated from postseason contention Sunday.
“I’ve just had enough of this,” Cora joked. “No, I think it’s a good exercise to just give (them) the information and go from there. It’s not going to be something radical, I hope. I told them yesterday, I say, ‘Hey, just do your homework, do your thing and come up with the lineup.’ They actually sent it to me already. I’ve got it on the phone. I’ve got to take a look at it.”

Cora pointed out how Venable will be a top managerial candidate this coming offseason with Astros bench coach Joe Espada and Team USA manager Mark DeRosa.
“He’s one of those guys that I read every article now (with managerial candidates) and it seems like his name is in all of them,” Cora said.
“His name is going to be out there,” Cora added. “He prepares and he helps me out (with the lineup). But just to give him the freedom to do quote-unquote whatever he wants to, I think it is cool. It will be good.”

Pivetta's AL East woes continue vs. Jays Righty gives up four runs (three earned) as Red Sox are shut out 12:55 AM ADT Ian Browne
Ian Browne @ianmbrowne
TORONTO -- Consistency is something that has eluded Nick Pivetta this season. He started cold, got hot for seven weeks and has been up and down since early July.
But one thing has been consistent about Pivetta’s inconsistency, and it was on display again at Rogers Centre in a 9-0 loss to the Blue Jays on Friday night.
Pivetta has struggled repeatedly against American League East foes this season, while thriving against non-divisional opponents.
“I think it’s year to year. This year has been up and down against [Toronto], but mostly negatives against the AL East all year round,” said Pivetta. “But it doesn’t change my approach, doesn’t change my belief in myself. Go out there and compete the best I can every single time. If the chips fall my way, it works. If not, it is what it is.”
With Pivetta likely to be part of Boston’s mix for the next two seasons (the righty isn’t eligible for free agency until 2025), this will be a key issue to fix going forward.
While teams will play their division opponents 13 times per season instead of 19 with the new schedule format, the Red Sox will still see their AL East brethren more than anyone else.
Pivetta has one more chance to build some momentum in this regard, as he is slated to face the Rays in Game No. 162 on Wednesday afternoon at Fenway Park.
The best thing about Pivetta this season has been his durability. He leads the team in starts (32) and innings (175 2/3) by wide margins.
“Yeah I look forward to making my 33rd start of the year,” said Pivetta. “I always love to pitch. I always love to go out there and compete. Things will turn my way better next time, but just go out there, same thought process, same confidence as I always have, and same confidence in this team and our abilities.”
In 17 starts against the AL East, Pivetta is 1-8 with a 6.72 ERA, a .293 opponents batting average and an .877 OPS. In 15 starts against all other teams, the 29-year-old is 9-4 with a 2.86 ERA, a .222 opponents batting average and a .647 OPS.
Pivetta’s AL East struggles are a bit of a microcosm for Boston’s season. The Red Sox, who are headed to a last-place finish, are 23-48 in the division and 52-34 out of the division. Boston is 3-14 against Toronto.
“That’s a good hitting team, but we’re going to be in this division for a long, long time,” said Red Sox manager Alex Cora. “They’re changing rules, but not divisions. You’re going to face all these teams. We’ve got to do a better job. They have had their way against us, Nick, it doesn’t matter [who is pitching], they put good swings and we just have to make adjustments.”
As for Pivetta, will he look over specific adjustments in the offseason to have better results in the division?
“I don’t think I’m going to overthink it. Just been an unfortunate year in the AL East,” said Pivetta. “You guys [in the media] kind of harped on it last week, but I’m OK with it. It is what it is. There’s ups and downs. I’ve had good starts this year against teams in the AL East. It’s just not rolling my way this year, but I look forward to next year and just continuing to compete against good players.”
What does Cora see?
“He gave us like 10 straight good ones,” said Cora. “He struggled early and he’s been on and off the last month and a half, two months. We always talk about him, his fastball and everything. It starts with command. You’ve got to use the fastball in the zone and obviously expand with the breaking ball.”

Pete Abraham @peteabe · 6h It's 9-0 and the Jays are about to improve to 14-3 against the Red Sox with a +57 run differential.
Sox now 75-82. This year is the 5th in the last 11 with a losing record and a last-place finish in the division.
Prior to 2012, they had gone 14 consecutive seasons over .500 and hadn't finished in last since '92.
Highest of highs, lowest of lows. Odd period in team history.
Blue Jays clinched a postseason spot yesterday on a day off. They're popping bottles now in the clubhouse.

Red Sox Stats @redsoxstats · 6h NESN talking about bullpen and Edwin Diaz, I think the likelihood of the Red Sox signing him is the same as Ortiz coming out of retirement to DH.
I do think they will get involved in the next tier, either free agency (Rafael Montero?) or a substantial trade (Alexis Diaz?).

Against Red Sox, Blue Jays aim to strengthen wild-card standing FLM
The Toronto Blue Jays will try to move closer to earning the top American League wild-card spot Saturday afternoon by clinching their three-game series with the visiting Boston Red Sox.
The Blue Jays (88-69) won the series opener Friday night 9-0 to end a three-game winning streak by the Red Sox (75-82).
The Blue Jays clinched a playoff spot Thursday during an off-day on their schedule when the Red Sox defeated the Baltimore Orioles.
The Blue Jays celebrated reaching the playoffs in the clubhouse after the game on Friday. Later they gathered on the field after the stands had emptied.
"I think whenever you have a chance to do that you have to embrace it," Blue Jays interim manager John Schneider said. "That doesn't happen all the time and I can't wait to have a good time with that group."
"All the hard work paid off,'' Blue Jays shortstop Bo Bichette said. "We put a lot in and we had high expectations of ourselves and we were able to accomplish it. There's still more work to do, obviously, and we expect more but we definitely need to enjoy this."
Bichette was 2-for-4 with a walk and an RBI on Friday. He finished September with 48 hits, surpassing Tony Fernández (47 in June 1986) and Lloyd Moseby (47 in August 1983) for the most hits in a calendar month in franchise history.
"Once we got back from the break, I think we started playing with a little more urgency," Schneider said. "This is a really talented team. Over the course of a few months, you kind of feel each other out. You see how you play together. The more they did that, the more they got comfortable with one another, and we've had different guys carry us at different times."
The Blue Jays will start right-hander Ross Stripling (9-4, 3.16 ERA) on Saturday. He is 3-3 with a 5.32 ERA in 10 career starts against the Red Sox.
The Red Sox will start rookie right-hander Brayan Bello (2-7, 4.39 ERA). He is 0-1 with a 7.00 ERA in two career starts against Toronto.
The Red Sox are 23-48 against teams in the American League East and 3-14 against the Blue Jays.
The Red Sox placed right-hander Kaleb Ort on the restricted list Friday. He is not vaccinated against COVID-19, and was unable to travel with the club due to Canada's vaccination restrictions. The restrictions are scheduled to be lifted Saturday and Ort will rejoin the team.
Outfielder Jarren Duran took Ort's spot on the roster. Duran, who was optioned to Triple-A Worcester in August, started in center field and batted leadoff, going 1-for-4 on Friday. Duran was hitting .220/.283/.365 in 219 plate appearances before his demotion. Duran said he puts too much pressure on himself.
"I just take things too seriously," Duran said. "I was trying to make everybody happy when at the end of the day you have to make yourself happy and everybody else will support you."
With Ort's return Saturday, a move will be made. Duran was not certain whether that would involve him.
"I'm still learning to compete with these guys," Duran said. "I'm going to go out there and have some fun."
Duran's single was one of two hits against Toronto starter Alek Manoah on Friday. Manoah pitched six scoreless innings and has pitched 15 consecutive innings without allowing a run.

well gonna be interesting on a few fronts baseball wise can the Brew Crew keep it up and sneak into the dance? and there has been fans of the Jays up here that want to keep the metal to the pedal and keep the top WC seed as they want nothing to do with going to the Trop for any games..... Gonna be interesting to see the Jays line up today.
And that scene in Seattle last night was pretty damn cool.
