RED SOX NOTEBOOK Once a promising power prospect, Red Sox infielder Bobby Dalbec plans to reset after lackluster season By Julian McWilliams Globe Staff,Updated October 1, 2022, 4:50 p.m.
TORONTO — Bobby Dalbec was a promising 25-year-old with light-tower power when the Red Sox called him up midway through the 2020 season.
Upon his arrival in late August of that year, he was as good as advertised. In just 23 games, Dalbec hit .263, belting eight homers with a .959 OPS. He did that without a true season. COVID-19 stripped that away. Prospects of Dalbec’s caliber were relegated to an alternate site during the summer months, playing in intrasquad games. The organization, and baseball, at large, did not want young players to miss out on a year of development.
Dalbec, in some form, did not.
After a slow start in 2021, Dalbec got hot, playing a key role in the Sox’ postseason push. In the end, he hit .240/.298/.494 with a .792 OPS. He tallied 78 RBIs and hit 25 homers, a promising line for a player during his first full season in the big leagues.
But after scuffling for much of the 2022 season, coupled with the rise of 22-year-old first baseman Triston Casas, Dalbec, at 27 years old, was optioned to Triple A Worcester. Casas, meanwhile, took Dalbec’s spot on the roster.
Was there disappointment? Perhaps. But Dalbec, who was hitting just .211 with 11 homers while striking out 113 times across 340 plate appearances, saw it as an opportunity to get himself right.
“I was glad I could go play,” Dalbec said before sitting out a 10-0 loss to the Blue Jays Saturday afternoon. “That was the biggest thing for me. There were times throughout the year where I felt like I was really about to take off and then I wouldn’t play based off matchups, whatever the decision, which is fine. They’re going to put out what they think is the best team that can win.”
Not playing, Dalbec said, got in his head. Not from a standpoint of thinking he was incapable. But when you don’t play, you can tinker with your swing when it doesn’t need a change.
Dalbec was recalled last week, replacing Trevor Story ahead of the Yankees series at Yankee Stadium. His locker was right next to Casas, the Sox’ shiny new toy, something Dalbec was just two years ago.
His playing time is limited, with Casas getting the majority of the looks. Dalbec had his chances. He realizes that. Assessing the situation moving forward, with first baseman Eric Hosmer still a part of the mix, does not give Dalbec pause heading into next year.
“I can play pretty much anywhere,” Dalbec said. “Those guys are both great players. Casas is doing great. He has almost a .900 OPS. It’s very impressive to see his discipline in the strike zone, which is something I need to work on.”
Dalbec said he will utilize this upcoming offseason as a chance to reset. He will go back home to Arizona and has some drills lined up to help with his timing. Then, he will decide if he will play winter ball as he inches toward the 2023 season.
“My best baseball is ahead of me, that’s for sure,” Dalbec said. Ort, Winckowski back in the fold
The Red Sox reinstated righthander Kaleb Ort from the restricted list and recalled righthander Josh Winckowski. To make room, the club optioned righthander Tyler Danish and outfielder Jarren Duran to Triple A Worcester . . . Michael Wacha will make his final start of the season . . . Xander Bogaerts hit in the designated hitter’s spot Saturday. The plan is for him to play the final four games of the season at shortstop, including three games at Fenway . . . J.D. Martinez had a scheduled offday . . . Kiké Hernández got the start at shortstop.

Boston Red Sox vs. Toronto Blue Jays Sunday, October 2, 2022 at 1:37pm EDT Written by Mason Folz
This Sunday, the (75-82) Boston Red Sox and the (88-69) Toronto Blue Jays will play the final game of this three-game series. The first pitch will be thrown out at 1:37 PM EST inside the Rogers Centre. The last time that these two teams matched up, the Blue Jays ended up sweeping the Red Sox.
The Boston Red Sox are coming into this one after winning their previous series against the Baltimore Orioles. Boston took three of four games, as they looked great at the dish. They scored 21 combined runs in their three wins.
The Toronto Blue Jays are entering this one after losing their previous series to the New York Yankees. The Blue Jays struggled at the plate in games two and three, as they only scored five combined runs in their two losses. They will have to warm up at the plate if they want to take care of business at home. (Toronto crushed Boston 10-0 on Saturday).
Can the Red Sox Finish Strong? The Boston Red Sox are 3-7 in their last 10 games played, as they have continued to fall out of the AL Wild Card race. They are now 11 games back from the Tampa Bay Rays for the third and final AL Wild Card spot. Boston is also stuck in dead last place in the AL East, as they trial the first-place New York Yankees by 21.5 games.
At the plate, the Red Sox are scoring 4.63 runs per game and they are hitting .258 as a team. This is the eighth most runs per game and the second-highest overall team batting average. They have shown that they can consistently reach base safely and they have also been great with men in scoring position. Boston has also realized that they don't have as much power inside of their lineup as they originally thought. They are only averaging .98 home runs per game, which is the 20th most in the MLB. I would watch for Rafael Devers at the plate, as he leads the team with 27 bombs this season. I would also expect the Red Sox to stay unaggressive once they have reached base safely. They have only swiped 51 bases this season, which is the 26th most in the league.
According to MLB.com, the Red Sox will be starting Michael Wacha on the mound, as he is 11-1 this season with a 3.06 ERA and a 1.09 WHIP. In his last start, he pitched for 3.1 innings but gave up six earned runs to the Orioles. He is also 6-0 on the road this season with a 3.46 ERA. The Red Sox bullpen hasn't been as solid, though. They are surrendering the 25th most runs per game. As a team, Boston is surrendering 4.95 runs per game, which is the 25th most in the MLB this season.
Will the Blue Jays Hold On? The Toronto Blue Jays are currently sitting at the top of the AL Wild Card race, as they have a 2-game lead over the Seattle Mariners. Toronto is 5-5 in their last 10 games played, as they will make the postseason this year. They are also still in second place in the AL East, as they trail the first-place New York Yankees by 8.5 games.
At the plate, the Blue Jays are scoring 4.79 runs per game and they are hitting .261 as a team. This is the sixth most runs scored per game and the highest overall team batting average. They have shown that they can consistently make contact with the ball, which has made it much easier to score. They also have a ton of power hidden inside of their lineup. They are hitting 1.25 bombs per game, which is the ninth most in the MLB. I would watch for Vladimir Guerrero Jr., as he leads the team with 31 home runs this season. I would also expect the Blue Jays to stay unaggressive once they have reached base safely, as well. They will allow their bats to move runners into scoring position, as they have stolen the 21st most bases this season.
According to MLB.com, the Blue Jays will be starting Kevin Gausman on the mound. He is 12-10 this season with a 3.30 ERA and a 1.23 WHIP. In his last start, he pitched for 6.1 innings and he only gave up six hits and two earned runs to the Yankees. He hasn't been perfect at home this season, though. Inside his home ballpark, he is 4-7 with a 4.52 ERA. Toronto's bullpen is allowing the sixth least amount of runs per game, as well. As a team, the Blue Jays are allowing 4.30 runs per game, which is the 15th most in the league.

Hernández homers twice, Jays win 9th straight over Red Sox AP
TORONTO (AP) Teoscar Hernandez hit two home runs, Whit Merrifield also connected and the Toronto Blue Jays edged closer to clinching home-field advantage in the wild-card round by beating the Boston Red Sox 6-3 Sunday.
''Guys are hungry not just to get to the playoffs but to make a run,'' Merrifield said. ''We have the guys to do it, we have the talent to do it. Just a matter of getting hot at the right time.''
The Blue Jays completed a three-game sweep with their 16th win in 19 games against Boston this season. That's the most victories by any major league team against a division opponent this season.
''We're playing a really good brand of baseball right now,'' Blue Jays right-hander Kevin Gausman said. ''We've just got to kind of keep it going.''
Sixteen wins is also the most victories the Blue Jays have had against an opponent in a single season. Toronto went 15-4 against Baltimore in 2002 and again in 2010.
Gausman left after three innings because of a cut on his right middle finger. He allowed two runs and four hits, struck out four and walked none.
''In a different situation, even if this is two weeks prior, I'm staying in that game,'' Gausman said. ''Obviously, with the postseason coming up, I didn't want it to get any worse.''
Gausman said the cut opened up alongside his finger nail in the first inning. He said it only affects him when he throws his split-fingered fastball, a pitch he doesn't throw in between starts.
''My other pitches, there's no problem,'' Gausman said.
To prevent cuts and blisters, Gausman said he routinely treats the area with a laser between starts, and will continue to do so this week. He's expected to start Game 2 of the wild-card series next Saturday.
Merrifield went 3 for 3 with two RBIs and scored twice.
''He's been vital to what we've been doing down the stretch,'' interim manager John Schneider said.
It was the sixth three-hit game of the season for Merrifield, who is 10 for 20 over his past six games.
''He's been our best hitter the last week, outside of Bo (Bichette),'' Gausman said.
Needing a triple to complete the cycle, Merrifield grounded into a fielder's choice to end the eighth inning.
Bobby Dalbec hit a solo home run and had three RBIs for the Red Sox, who lost their final nine meetings with Toronto. Boston didn't beat the Blue Jays again after a 6-5 win in Toronto on June 29.
After Gausman left, right-hander Zach Pop (4-0) pitched two perfect innings. Adam Cimber worked the sixth, and Anthony Bass gave up Dalbec's homer in the seventh. The home run was Dalbec's 12th.
Yimi Garcia pitched the eighth inning and Jordan Romano finished for his 36th save in 42 chances.
Hernandez homered to begin the second, then hit a two-run drive off the left field foul screen in the fourth, his 14th career multi-homer game. The home runs were his 24th and 25th.
Merrifield hit a leadoff blast in the third, his 11th.
All three homers came off Boston right-hander Michael Wacha (11-2), who gave up three home runs for the second straight start.
''Just a good lineup and you've got to be really precise with where you're putting that ball,'' Wacha said.
Wacha allowed five runs and six hits in four innings, losing for the first time since May 31 against Cincinnati.
''Overall, a great season,'' manager Alex Cora said. ''He's an outstanding kid. Obviously he got hurt but he gave us everything we asked him to.''
The Red Sox are 23-50 against AL East opponents with three games against Tampa Bay remaining. It's the first time Boston has lost 50 games to division opponents.
After Dalbec's homer cut it to 5-3, George Springer restored Toronto's three-run lead with an RBI fielder's choice against right-hander Kaleb Ort in the bottom of the seventh.
LOCAL HEROES
According to the Blue Jays, Sunday's game was the first in franchise history in which the win (Pop) and the save (Romano) went to Canadian-born pitchers.
FIVE FOR 75
The Blue Jays have five batters with 75 or more RBIs (Vladimir Guerrero Jr., Bichette, Matt Chapman, Springer and Hernandez). That matches the Los Angeles Dodgers for most in the majors.
QUICK HANDS
Pop made a behind-the-back stab on Abraham Almonte's comebacker in the fourth, then knocked down Enrique Hernandez's 106.4 mph liner and got the out at first to end the fifth.
''I don't want to call it dumb luck but we'll call it pitcher luck,'' Merrifield joked about Pop's big plays.
TRAINER'S ROOM
Red Sox: 1B Eric Hosmer (back) is expected to be activated off the injured list Monday, Cora said.
FINAL ATTENDANCE
Toronto drew 43,877 for its final regular season home game. The Blue Jays drew 2,653,830 fans across 81 home games this season, an average of 32,763 per game. It's their highest total since drawing 3,203,886 in 2017. The Blue Jays didn't play in Toronto at all in 2020, and had just 36 games at Rogers Centre last year.
UP NEXT
Red Sox: LHP Rich Hill (8-7, 4.41 ERA) starts Monday as Boston hosts Tampa Bay. RHP Tyler Glasnow (0-0, 3.00 ERA) starts for the Rays.
Blue Jays: RHP Jose Berrios (11-7, 5.37 ERA) starts Monday as Toronto visits Baltimore RHP Dean Kremer (8-6, 3.17 ERA) goes for the Orioles.

Red Sox will play starters during final series; ‘We expect 30,000 people and they deserve the best’

TORONTO — The Red Sox have been out of postseason contention since last Sunday but they plan to put out competitive lineups for their final series this week.
Boston will conclude its 2022 season by hosting the Rays for three games Monday, Tuesday and Wednesday.
“We expect 30,000 people at home and they deserve the best that we have and we’re going to try to do that,” manager Alex Cora said Sunday here at Rogers Centre.
Xander Bogaerts, Rafael Devers and Alex Verdugo all are sitting Sunday vs. the Blue Jays. But it sounds like they will play vs. the Rays.
Rich Hill will start Monday. Nathan Eovaldi will start Tuesday. Nick Pivetta will pitch the season finale Wednesday. Enter your email address here to receive the Fenway Rundown email newsletter in your inbox every Wednesday.
The Red Sox will take it easy with Eovaldi because this will be his second start back after a 36-game IL stint.
“Probably will be smart about it,” Cora said. “He’s actually been feeling good. He bounced back well. So I don’t know if we’re going to go 100 pitches with him but probably 6 (innings), 85 (pitches) and call it a day.”
Eric Hosmer likely will be activated Monday for the final series. Hosmer has been on the injured list since Aug. 22 with low back inflammation.
“He’s feeling well,” Cora said. “He’s been doing his stuff at Fenway. So there’s a good chance he’ll be activated tomorrow.”

The minor league season is complete and so Hosmer hasn’t been able to play in any rehab games.
“We’ve got this machine. It’s like a simulator and what comes out is pretty similar to the stuff (of major league pitchers). For example, you put Gerrit Cole and the machine actually (simulates) the stuff based on his last start. So he’s been facing some good big league pitching the last few days.”
Cora said only five organizations own this type of pitching machine.
How much will Cora use Hosmer?
“Give him a start,” Cora said. “Give House to the House (Triston Casas) a day off. But we’ll use him. But it’s good that he wanted to do it. He put himself in this situation and we’ll use him.”
Cora’s nickname for Casas is House to the House.

TORONTO — Michael Wacha had a strong 2022 season for the Red Sox. But his final start didn’t go so well.
The righty lasted just 4 innings, allowing five runs, six hits and one walk while striking out four. He gave up two homers to Teoscar Hernández and another homer to Whit Merrifield.
The Blue Jays won 6-3 and swept the three-game series here at Rogers Centre.
Toronto absolutely dominated the Red Sox this season, going 16-3 against them and outscoring Boston an incredible 125-55.
Boston dropped to 23-50 against AL East teams. Enter your email address here to receive the Fenway Rundown email newsletter in your inbox every Wednesday.
The Red Sox sat their three top hitters, Xander Bogaerts, Rafael Devers and Alex Verdugo, for Sunday’s finale.
After not scoring in the first two games, Boston finally got on the board with a two-run single from Bobby Dalbec in the second inning that put the Red Sox ahead 2-0.

Wacha struggled in his final two starts, giving up 11 runs in 7 ⅓ innings.

#RedSox are 75-84. They've been swept in this three-game series at Rogers Centre.
Boston wasn't a credible threat to win at any point this weekend. They're miles from the Blue Jays.
