Red Sox notebook: 2023 season gets going Thursday
By Gabrielle Starr | gstarr@bostonherald.com | PUBLISHED: March 29, 2023 at 7:10 p.m. | UPDATED: March 29, 2023 at 7:11 p.m.
After a long, cold, bitter winter, there’s light at the end of the tunnel.
The sun is shining, the buds are opening on the trees, the temperatures are uh, still pretty frigid, but baseball is back.
Welcome to Red Sox Opening Day 2023. Logistics
On Thursday, Fenway’s gates will open at 12:10 p.m., and Opening Day ceremonies begin at 1:30 p.m.
Michelle Brooks-Thompson will sing the National Anthem. Two F-15C’s from the 104th Fighter Wing and two F-35A’s from the 158th Fighter Wing will do the flyover.
First pitch is at 2:10 p.m., and the game will be broadcast on NESN.
The Red Sox have the day off on Frida, but fans can head west on the Mass Pike to Worcester. Triple-A WooSox Opening Day kicks off at 4:05 p.m. The starter
Corey Kluber gets the ball for Game 1 of 2023.
The two-time Cy Young award-winner and three-time All-Star has a career 3.31 ERA, 3.09 FIP, and 1.112 WHIP across 12 seasons and 1,586 2/3 regular-season innings. He’s the active career leader in walks/nine (2.0) and led MLB in the metric last year (1.2).
Kluber made 31 starts for the Rays last year and 16 for the Yankees in 2020, so he’s veering into Steve Pearce territory; the 2018 champion and World Series MVP played for all five AL East teams in his 13-year career.
Fun fact: Even though this is his first season with the Red Sox, the Alabama native has called Massachusetts home for years. He and his wife, Amanda, and their children live in her hometown of Winchester. The history
This is the 123rd season in Red Sox franchise history, and the 112th at Fenway Park.
Happy 34th birthday, Chris Sale. The veteran lefty isn’t starting Opening Day, but he will celebrate his birthday on Thursday, as well as his first healthy start to a season since 2019. He’ll start the second game of the season on Saturday.
According to Red Sox PR, Kiké Hernández could become the first player in franchise history to make Opening Day starts for the team at second base, shortstop and in center field. Jack Rothrock (1920s) and Jim Piersall (1950s) are the only two Red Sox players to start Opening Day games at short and center. New rules
Whether you’re watching at home or at the ballpark, keep an eye out for the new rules. A pitch clock, shift restrictions and larger bases are all coming to play this season.
Major League Baseball is also going to continue cracking down on pitchers’ use of foreign substance, known colloquially as “sticky stuff.” A balanced schedule
For the first time, the Red Sox will play all 29 teams for at least one series.
In order to accommodate this more diverse, balanced schedule, there’s less divisional play. Instead of 19 games over six series against each American League East foe, they’ll only meet 13 times, divided into four series.

It’s Opening Day at Fenway Park. Here are the starting lineups and a preview of today’s action.By Andrew Mahoney Globe Staff,Updated March 30, 2023, 1 hour ago It’s Opening Day, and spring is in the air! Well, kind of. The sky over Fenway Park will be clear, but the game-time temperature will be in the low 40s, with a wind-chill in the low 30s, so bundle up if you’re heading to the game. Gates will open at 12:10 p.m., with the pregame ceremony set to begin at 1:30 p.m. There will be a flyover performed by the 104th Fighter Wing, Massachusetts National Guard, and the 158th Fighter Wing, Vermont National Guard, consisting of two F-35As and two F-15Cs. Expectations are low for a Red Sox team that finished six games below .500 and in last place in the American League East in 2022, then let shortstop Xander Bogaerts walk in free agency. For the Sox to defy expectations, remaining healthy will be a key, particularly when it comes to the rotation. Two-time Cy Young winner Corey Kluber, 36, gets the start in his debut with the Red Sox. You can read the Globe’s comprehensive preview for the 2023 season here. Included are staff predictions, features on manager Alex Cora and third baseman Rafael Devers, an examination of the roster, as well as a look at what the future may hold for chief baseball officer Chaim Bloom and the organization. Lineups ORIOLES (0-0): 1. Cedric Mullins (L) CF 2. Adley Rutschman (S) C 3. Anthony Santander (S) LF 4. Ryan Mountcastle (R) 1B 5. Gunnar Henderson (L) DH 6. Ramon Urias (R) 3B 7. Notes: Kluber is making his sixth Opening Day start. In his first five starts, all with Cleveland, he went 0-4 with a 4.01 ERA. In seven career starts at Fenway, Kluber is 4-1 with a 3.53 ERA … Gibson has a 1.57 ERA in 28⅔ career innings at Fenway … In the last 22 seasons (2001-22), teams that went on to win the World Series were 11-11 on Opening Day … In three of their last four World Series seasons, the Red Sox lost on Opening Day (2004, ‘07, ‘18). … The last two Red Sox to record a hit in the team’s first plate appearance of a season were Kiké Hernández in 2021 (single) and Dustin Pedroia in 2008 (single). Alex Speier @alexspeier · 1h Alex Cora: “Today is day 1 …. last year is in the past. I learned that in ‘19. … This year is different from ‘22. Just be ready, see where it takes us.”
Cora says Paxton was 95-96 yesterday over two innings. He expects his next start to be in Triple-A.
Adalberto Mondesi is being placed on the 60-day injured list. Cora: “We want this guy to be the explosive guy he was a few years ago.” Team will take more time to get that.
Cora makes it official that Tapia and Ort are on the roster. No second lefty. “We need righties to get lefties out.”
Cora says Sox feel that Jarren Duran is “in a great spot” with where his hands are and all-fields approach, but believe he’ll benefit from playing everyday in Worcester.
Cora says he was “very anxious” last night and found it hard to sleep.
Sale turned 34 today. He told Cora that while he’s 34, his arm is now 31 after not pitching the last three years.

Alex Speier @alexspeier · 16m We have 3 true outcomes in the span of four batters for Kluber and the RedSox: strikeout (Mullins), homer (Rutschman), strikeout (Santander), walk (Mountcastle).
Kluber walked multiple batters in the same inning *once* in 2022, and never walked back-to-back hitters. Naturally, he walked back-to-back Orioles with 2 outs in the first - then elicited an inning-ending groundout to strand both.
Alex Verdugo is the first Red Sox player to lead off the first inning of the team's first game with a triple since Rabbit Warstler in 1931.
Prior to Rabbit Warstler in 1931, the previous Red Sox hitter to lead off the first inning of the first game with a triple was Ossie Vitt -- off of Walter Johnson! -- in 1921. (It was Vitt's only triple in 291 plate appearances that year.)

Alex Speier @alexspeier · 32s Kluber issues a leadoff walk -- his 3rd of the game; he walked 3+ batters just once in all of 2022 -- and then gave up a two-run skyscraper to Urías. Orioles lead, 3-1.

Pete Abraham @peteabe · 7m Today was only the 7th time in his career Corey Kluber walked 4+ and allowed 6+ hits in a game.
First time since 2019.
He leaves the game down 3-1 with the bases loaded and one out. Zack Kelly has a big mess to clean up.
