Sale searching for answers after 'disappointing' start 1:21 AM ADT Ian Browne
Ian Browne @ianmbrowne
BALTIMORE -- Frustration had to be the word Chris Sale was muttering into his glove as he walked off the mound following a shaky bottom of the fourth inning, in which the remainder of the early cushion his team provided for him whittled away to nothing.
As Sale got back to the dugout, he spiked his glove onto the bench, then punched a cooler with his right (non-throwing) hand four times.
Yes, Boston’s lefty was filled with frustration with his fourth subpar outing in his five starts this season as the Red Sox lost to the Orioles, 5-4, on Monday night at Camden Yards.
Sale (1-2, 8.22 ERA) wishes he could put a finger on it. At this point, all he can do is keep searching for solutions.
“It was just bad. I wish I had more for you. I really do,” said Sale. “It sucks to work this hard and get nothing in return, you know? I’m putting in the work. It’s just not showing up. Again, I could sit here and try to find something, but it's pretty black and white. You either get it done or you don't. Unfortunately, for the most part this year, I haven't gotten it done.”
Early on, it looked like this would be a big night for the Red Sox. Triston Casas hit a mammoth homer to right that traveled a projected distance of 426 feet to open the scoring in the second. And an inning later, Rafael Devers became the seventh Boston player to put one onto Eutaw Street (and first since Jackie Bradley Jr. in 2017) with a 115 mph scorcher.
But the good feelings drifted away swiftly, as Sale couldn’t hold the 4-0 lead his team staked him to through the top of the third inning.
“Definitely disappointing,” said Sale. “Guys come up quick, come out hot, give me a four-run cushion, and I just [give] it away. That’s tough.”
This misstep by Sale was particularly perplexing because he was coming off a vintage outing last week against the Twins, when he had 11 strikeouts while allowing just one run on three hits over six innings.
Instead of carrying over the momentum, Sale lost it all, failing to strike out a batter for the first time in his career. The only other start Sale had with a goose egg in the K column was July 22, 2022, when he broke his left pinkie finger at Yankee Stadium after recording just two outs.
What does the lack of a punchout for the first time in a non-injury start for the first time in his career tell Sell?
“It tells me I sucked,” Sale said.
His catcher, Connor Wong was less harsh.
“I thought it was quite a weird outing,” said Wong. “They put some swings on some tough pitches. Got some bloop hits, and it kind of snowballed from there. We will just have to go back and watch the film and try and process that.”
One thing that is clear is that Sale’s slider at this point of 2023 isn’t close to what it once was.
The expected wOBA -- projected wOBA based on the quality of contact, strikeouts and walks -- against Sale’s slider has dramatically increased (or gotten worse). It was at .294 this season entering Monday’s start compared to .159 in 2018.
Mainly to preserve the bullpen, Red Sox manager Alex Cora had Sale go five innings on Monday. He gave up five runs on nine hits and one walk on 83 pitches.
Of the 42 swings the Orioles took, they missed just twice. It was in stark contrast to that brilliant last start, when Sale got 19 whiffs out of 44 swings by the Twins.
After three consecutive seasons in which he was mostly either injured or rehabbing from an injury, Sale’s rust has been noticeable thus far in 2023.
His next start is likely to be Sunday at Fenway Park against the Guardians.
“You’ve just got to keep working. But this ain’t the Try-Hard League. This isn’t the Do-Good League,” said Sale. “People only care so much about trying hard, working hard. It’s got to be out there when the lights flick on. I’ve got to step up. I’ve got to find a way. That's who I am. That's who I have to be.”

Injuries & Moves: Chang leaves with left wrist pain April 24th, 2023

LATEST NEWS
April 24: INF Yu Chang exits with left wrist pain After completing a swing and miss in the seventh inning of Monday's game against the Orioles, Chang immediately winced in pain and then flexed his left hand. He was taken out of the game and replaced by Christian Arroyo, who completed the at-bat. Chang has stabilized Boston at shortstop in recent days, so he will be missed if he is out for an extended period.
Red Sox manager Alex Cora said that Chang will be examined in Baltimore on Tuesday to determine the severity of the injury.
April 24: RHP Brayan Bello optioned to Triple-A Worcester; LHP Brennan Bernardino recalled from Triple-A Worcester With Boston's bullpen overworked in recent weeks, the club made the somewhat surprising decision to option Bello to Triple-A after making just two starts. Bello opened the season on the injured list due to right forearm tightness early in Spring Training. In Bernardino, the Red Sox get a 31-year-old reliever they claimed off waivers from the Mariners on April 16.
Bernardino made his first appearance with Worcester on Friday at Lehigh Valley, going two scoreless innings with two strikeouts. He signed with Seattle as a Minor League free agent on June 27, 2022, after pitching for Tijuana in the Mexican Baseball League from 2021-22. In his first appearance with the Red Sox on Monday, Bernardino allowed four hits over two scoreless innings.
RHP Chris Martin (right shoulder inflammation) Expected return: April 28 at earliest Manager Alex Cora said that Martin could return by the upcoming homestand, which starts on April 28 against the Guardians. The veteran righty threw a bullpen session on April 24.
"That's the reason we decided to go this route," Cora said on April 21. "Because if he keeps pitching, he’s not going to get worse, but he's not going to get better. I think we made the right call. He feels the same way, and we're going to get him soon." (Last updated: April 24)
LHP Joely Rodríguez (right oblique strain) Expected return: May Rodríguez could start a Minor League rehab assignment by the week of May 1, according to manager Alex Cora. Rodríguez threw a bullpen session in Fort Myers, Fla., on April 21. The new Red Sox reliever started a routine of throwing off flat ground on April 4 and played catch at about 75 feet on April 10. Chris Sale struggles, doesn’t record strikeout as Red Sox lose to Orioles, 5-4
Published: Apr. 24, 2023, 9:05 p.m.
By
Chris Cotillo | ccotillo@MassLive.com
BALTIMORE -- Coming off an 11-strikeout performance in his last start, Red Sox starter Chris Sale was hopeful his success would carry over to Monday night’s outing in Baltimore. Instead, a chilly night at Camden Yards represented a step back for the lefty — and one of the more unusual starts of his career.
Baltimore held a hit parade against Sale to erase an early 4-0 Red Sox lead and take the opening game of a three-game series, 5-4. Sale was tagged for five runs and nine hits in just five innings and saw his ERA rise to 8.22. For the first time in his career in an outing lasting more than one inning, Sale didn’t record any strikeouts.
Boston’s offense put Sale in a good spot to start things off. In the second inning, Triston Casas opened the scoring with a 426-foot solo homer off Dean Kremer. An inning later, after Alex Verdugo laced an RBI single to make it 2-0, Rafael Devers launched his American League-leading ninth home run onto Eutaw St. to make it a 4-0 game. Baltimore got on the board in the third when Cedric Mullins hit a leadoff double and came around to score on an Adam Frazier RBI hit.
The O’s then really got to Sale in the fourth. He retired the first batter then allowed four straight hits, including a two-run double to Ramón Urías and a game-tying single to James McCann. An inning later, Jorge Mateo led off with a double before Austin Hays drove him in to give the Orioles a lead. Boston’s bats went quiet as the Orioles held their one-run advantage. In the ninth, the Sox had a chance to tie when Masataka Yoshida walked and pinch-runner Raimel Tapia advanced to second on a balk with no outs. But reliever Yennier Cano retired three straight batters to end the game.
With the los, the Red Sox fell back to .500 at 12-12. They are 2-2 against the Orioles so far this season and 2-6 against A.L. East opponents. Yoshida reached base four times in the loss (three singles and a walk).
Devers crushes homer
Devers’ third-inning homer was a mammoth blast that reached Eutaw St. behind the right-field stands at Oriole Park. It left the bat with an exit velocity of 115 mph and traveled 387 feet.
Devers’ blast was the Red Sox’ seventh-ever Eutaw St. homer and the first since Jackie Bradley Jr. crushed one on April 22, 2017.
Chang leaves game
While hitting in the seventh inning, Red Sox shortstop Yu Chang left the game with “left wrist pain” and was replaced by Christian Arroyo, who struck out. It’s unclear if Chang will have to miss any time with the injury.
Fatse ejected
Red Sox hitting coach Pete Fatse was ejected by home plate umpire Junior Valentine for arguing balls and strikes in the top of the sixth inning.
Kluber looks to get on track Tuesday
Righty Corey Kluber (0-4, 8.50 ERA) will have a chance to get his season back on track Tuesday when he takes the mound in the middle game of the three-game series. Righty Kyle Bradish (1-0, 0.00 ERA) will pitch for Baltimore.
First pitch is at 6:35 p.m. ET.

RED SOX NOTEBOOK Red Sox summon reliever Brennan Bernardino from Triple A and send Brayan Bello to Worcester By Julian McWilliams Globe Staff,Updated April 24, 2023, 8:11 p.m.
BALTIMORE — The Red Sox recalled lefthander Brennan Bernardino from Triple A Worcester ahead of Monday’s game with the Orioles. To make room on the roster for the reliever, starter Brayan Bello was optioned to Worcester.
Bernardino came on for the seventh inning and worked two scoreless frames in a 5-4 Sox loss.
Performance certainly played a part in Bello’s demotion as the righthander, who began the season on the injured list, had a 9.82 ERA in two starts. The Sox also needed a bullpen arm, and a lefty in particular to go along with Richard Bleier.
Bernardino, who was claimed off waivers on April 16 from the Mariners, has just two big league appearances — both of which came with Seattle last season. Expecting him to be a contributor to the Red Sox’ success is a tall order. This move is more about the state of the bullpen, which has performed well and is getting healthier. But, equally, it’s a bullpen that has been overworked for the last week-plus with the Sox employing a six-man rotation.
“This is where we’re at right now,” manager Alex Cora said before the series opener. “If we have to use [Bernardino], we will use him.”
Red Sox relievers entered the day ranked 10th in the majors with a 3.35 ERA. In the previous 10 contests, when the club went 7-3, the bullpen had a 2.48 ERA. Righthanders Josh Winckowski and Kutter Crawford have performed admirably out of the bullpen as long relievers, with Winckowski posting a 1.65 ERA in eight games, while Crawford has yielded just one run in 11⅓ innings in relief. Related: Speier: Why was Brayan Bello demoted? The Red Sox felt they could help their present without hurting his future.
“I love it. I love where we’re at,” Cora said. “But there are certain days that if we don’t get enough from the rotation, we’re going to run into trouble and some guys have to step up at the end of the day.”
Expecting Crawford, Winckowski, and others to perform at their current rate over a span of a season would be unfair. Furthermore, the Sox bullpen entered Monday having worked a big leagues-high 94 innings, which also is unsustainable. The Sox do have an offday coming up Thursday after 19 games in as many days and have gone back to a five-man rotation.
James Paxton (hamstring) will make at least two more rehab starts for Worcester. When the lefthander returns, the team will gain another bullpen arm from the rotation.
Lefty Joely Rodriguez (oblique) and righty Chris Martin (shoulder) continue to progress, with each of the relievers recently throwing a bullpen. Rodriguez will pitch in a rehab game next week. There’s a chance Martin could be with the club over the weekend during its series against the Guardians at Fenway Park.
Decisions will have to be made soon regarding how this team moves forward as it pertains to its pitching staff.
“There’s certain guys that have been on and off, inconsistent, and they have to start being consistent because we’re going to get healthy at some point,” Cora said. “Decisions are going to be hard, and it’s a business. This is where we are at, but I love where we are with Winckowski. I love where we are with Crawford.
“I think there are weapons that we can actually use to reset our equation. But certain days that equation is slimmer than actually what we always envisioned.”
Chang exits with injury
Shortstop Yu Chang exited in the seventh inning following a swing and miss. Chang swung through a 1-1 offering and immediately pointed to his left hand. After the game, Chang said the team is hoping it’s not a hamate bone injury — which was the area to which Chang pointed.
Cora added Chang was in pain and will undergo more testing Tuesday.
Christian Arroyo finished the at-bat, a strikeout charged to Chang, and took over at second base, with Kiké Hernández shifting over to shortstop.
Chang had started five straight games at shortstop, and 10 of the last 12, providing solid play there that allowed Hernández to shift following Adam Duvall’s injury. McGuire available
Catcher Reese McGuire (hand) was available off the bench for the series opener. After entering Saturday’s game against the Brewers as a pinch hitter, McGuire finished the game behind the plate, but took a foul ball off his right hand in the eighth inning. Connor Wong has started 15 of 24 games at catcher . . . Rafael Devers’s third-inning homer was his ninth of the season, this one traveling to Camden Yards’ Eutaw Street beyond right field. Devers became the 118th player to hit a homer there and just the seventh Red Sox hitter. The last Red Sox player to do it? Jackie Bradley Jr. in 2017.

Looking for 8th straight win, surging Orioles host Red Sox
The Baltimore Orioles will attempt to extend their seven-game winning streak when they face the visiting Boston Red Sox on Tuesday in the middle game of a three-game series.
Baltimore won its seventh game in a row by rallying from a four-run deficit to beat Boston 5-4 on Monday. It was Baltimore's 11th victory in its last 13 games.
"It kind of feels like last year's team a little bit," Baltimore manager Brandon Hyde said. "We just don't blow a lot of people out. A lot of tight games. I think our players are better for it with how many tight games we played last year."
The Orioles have limited their opponents to 11 runs during the seven victories. Boston failed to score in the final six innings Monday after scoring four runs in the first three.
Red Sox manager Alex Cora said Baltimore pitchers changed their game plan after first baseman Triston Casas hit a solo home run in the second inning.
"They were throwing a lot of fastballs early on and then after that (the home run) it was breaking balls and changeups," Cora said. "And then they switched the script again."
Kyle Bradish (1-0, 0.00 ERA) is expected to start for Baltimore on Tuesday.
Bradish made his first start of the season April 3 against Texas, but left the game in the second inning after he was hit in the foot by a line drive. In his only start since then, he pitched six scoreless innings to earn the win in a 4-0 victory over Washington last Wednesday. He allowed five hits, struck out six and walked one.
Bradish has made five career starts against Boston and is 0-3 with a 7.54 ERA.
Corey Kluber (0-4, 8.50) will be seeking his first win of the season for Boston. He has a 6-5 record and a 4.26 ERA in 17 career starts against the Orioles.
In his last outing, Kluber gave up seven runs, including two home runs, in five innings of a 10-4 loss to Minnesota last Wednesday. He walked two, hit two batters and struck out four.
Boston shortstop Yu Chang left Monday's game in the seventh inning with a wrist injury.
"He's in pain," Cora said. "He's going to get tested (Tuesday), see where we're at. Right now it's sore. That's what we can say right now. He'll get tested (Tuesday) here in Baltimore and we'll know more."
Hyde said despite the save situation, he wanted to rest reliever Felix Bautista on Monday. Yennier Cano recorded the final three outs to earn his first major league save.
"Just because of his workload here as of late and just wanted to give him a night off," Hyde said of his decision to rest Bautista.
Bautista had pitched on two of the previous three days and threw a total of 37 pitches between those outings.
Before Monday's game, the Red Sox optioned right-hander Brayan Bello to Triple-A Worcester and recalled left-hander Brennan Bernardino, who allowed four hits in two scoreless innings during Monday's loss.

Alex Cora not worried about issues with umpire lingering after ejections Current Time 0:15 / Duration 0:30 By Logan Mullen, Audacy WEEI 93.7 21 minutes ago
The Red Sox made their issues with Junior Valentine abundantly clear Monday night.
Alex Cora isn’t expecting it to carry over into Tuesday.
Valentine, the home plate umpire Monday, was all over the place in Boston’s 5-4 loss to the Baltimore Orioles. He wasn’t the reason the Red Sox lost, but he certainly took the wind out of their sails.
Hitting coach Peter Fatse got tossed in the sixth for barking from the dugout, presumably over how Valentine was calling pitches both low and high a strike. Umpires have tendencies to favor pitches a little up or down and teams adjust, but Valentine was calling both, making for a pretty tall strike zone.
Valentine irked the Red Sox at other points too, including in the fourth and ninth innings on called third strikes to Triston Casas and Kiké Hernández, respectively.
After the game ended, Cora continued shouting at the umpires, and received an ejection of his own – even if it was more symbolic than anything.
“Honestly, we were actually having team breakfast and I was talking to Pete Fatse, our hitting coach, who had gotten thrown out earlier,” Cora said Tuesday in his weekly appearance on Gresh and Fauria. “It was like, how does this work? Do I not manage today because I got thrown out after the game? That's not -- whatever. That was our reaction. Whatever dude.”
In the spirit of that “whatever dude” approach, Cora didn’t sound worried about bad blood lingering the rest of the series.
“No, no, no, I don’t think there’s carryover," Cora said. "We disagreed with the strike zone throughout the day and we let him know, it's part of the game. There were some pitches that we didn’t agree with -- there were some pitches we didn’t agree with and they were strikes at the end.
“They’re professionals, just like us, nothing is going to happen. They understand there’s frustration from our side, and probably frustration from the other side, but no, there’s no carryover (with) the strike zone or arguing.”

Alex Cora wonders if Chris Sale is tipping pitches after rough start vs. Orioles Current Time 0:29 / Duration 0:30 By Logan Mullen, Audacy WEEI 93.7 an hour ago
It was expected that the first few outings of Chris Sale’s season could be turbulent.
They have been, but things took a perplexing turn Monday.
The Boston Red Sox southpaw has been attempting to find his form after years of injury-marred seasons. He hasn’t exactly returned to ace status so far this season, but the closest thing we've seen to vintage Sale was last week against the Twins. Sale dominated Minnesota’s lineup, striking out 11 across six innings, surrendering just one run off three hits and a walk.
Even though his previous three outings leading up to the Twins game were subpar, they featured plenty of strikeouts. So it wasn’t so much that the Orioles roughed up Sale -- who gave up five runs off nine hits and a walk -- that was surprising, it was that they never struck out.
Sale got close, too, getting into nine two-strike counts. Sox manager Alex Cora said they’re going to have to dive deeper into that "red flag" during his weekly appearance on Gresh and Fauria.
“The no swings and misses is a red flag," Cora said. "I’m not talking about health, it’s about pitch mix or pitch selection. Obviously the fastball up in the zone was a non-competitive pitch. The no swings and misses on the slider, and he had an OK one yesterday, is one where we have to get back to the drawing board and see if there’s something going on tipping-wise or pitch selection or all that stuff because it doesn’t make sense.
“The guy struck out 30 guys his first three or four starts with OK stuff, and yesterday it was very similar and we didn’t get one. So, we’ll take a look, work at it and get him ready for Sunday.”
It is worth adding that the Red Sox took issue with home plate umpire Junior Valentine's strike zone much of the night. Even if some calls broke Sale's way, it certainly wouldn't be enough to negate the fact that something seems amiss.

Didn't play much at first, then stepped in and performed well at shortstop the last 10 days. Then more good news as his wife had a baby.
