Jen McCaffrey @jcmccaffrey · 1h Schreiber's injury is officially a right teres major strain
Cora on rotation changes coming: I mean, I actually didn't like my utility role, to be honest with you, but I had to buy into it. This is what you get. Obviously, it’s a tough conversation. Certain guys, I can tell you about, Garrett and Martin in ‘21...And they did a good job. They understood. They didn't like it. But it’s still the big leagues, you're part of the team. At the end you have to accept it and go out there and do your job, because if you don't do your job, you’re not helping your cause in the future.
If all goes well tonight Crawford should be activated for the San Diego series. Whitlock is supposed to start one more on Sunday for Worcester.

'Game changer' Duran bounces back vs. Seattle Outfielder goes 2-for-4 with a homer, RBI single in win over Mariners 1:44 AM ADT Ian Browne
Ian Browne @ianmbrowne
BOSTON -- The early innings of an important game for the Red Sox were unkind to Jarren Duran on Tuesday night at Fenway Park.
In the bottom of the first inning, even as the Sox scored four runs against tough Mariners righty Luis Castillo, Duran struck out on three pitches. Two innings later, though Duran worked an impressive nine-pitch at-bat, he struck out again.
And in the top of the fourth, when Nick Pivetta was losing the 4-0 lead his team had built, Duran sold out for a diving catch in center but whiffed on it, allowing Teoscar Hernández a two-run triple instead of an RBI double.
Last year, when moments like those piled up for Duran, the snowball became too big for him to dig out of. But the 2023 version of Duran is fully capable of getting off the mat in short order, and that’s exactly what he did, helping the Red Sox to a 9-4 victory over Seattle at Fenway that ended a four-game losing streak.
“It’s baseball,” Duran said. “I punched out the first two at-bats, and I was like, ‘Flush it.’ But thinking about my boys, thinking about my guys, it's not all about me. So when I missed that play, I was like, ‘All right, Nicky’s gonna punch out the next guy and we're gonna get out of this and then we’ll go score more runs.’ I was just thinking about my teammates, and just trying to do the best I can.”
In the bottom of the fifth inning, Duran got even with Castillo, belting a first-pitch slider over Boston’s bullpen and into the bleachers in right-center that stretched the lead to 7-4. The blast was scorched at an exit velocity of 109.2 mph and traveled a Statcast projected distance of 417 feet. That’s a pretty good show of clout for a player known more for his speed than power.
“I saw nine pitches [in the previous at-bat], so I was like, ‘I've kind of seen everything he's got.’” said Duran. “I was just staying with my approach and he just happened to leave me a slider right down the middle and I put a good swing on it.”
Duran had another good swing in him in the seventh, when he looped an RBI single into center for more insurance. It made the tougher moments earlier in the game a distant memory, though Duran admits the missed catch stung in real time.
“That was a tough play, but I gotta make that play for Nicky P,” said Duran. “[Outfield instructor Kyle Hudson] has been talking about making plays for our pitchers in tough, crucial moments. That was a play I could have picked him up on, but I had [Alex Verdugo] and everybody telling me that, ‘Hey, man, that's a tough play, I'd rather you go after that 100 percent every time, like, don't be scared, you’ve got to play aggressive.’ So it was nice to know they had my back.”
The evolution of Duran has been one of the best early-season stories for the Red Sox. Duran has been open in interviews about how his struggles on the field led to mental health issues last season.
This season, Duran has often credited the support of his teammates for his improved resilience. But Duran has done a lot of work on and off the field to turn himself into the player people thought he was going to be a couple of years ago. He has a big fan in manager Alex Cora. Have the latest news, ticket information, and more from the Red Sox and MLB delivered right to your inbox.
“Oh, he’s great,” said Cora. “For everything that he has talked about, and he’s been very open about it, you care about him, not only on the field, but off the field. This kid, he went to Puerto Rico in the middle of the pandemic just to keep working on his craft. We were able to connect and I'm very proud of him.”
After not making the team in Spring Training, Duran was recalled from Triple-A Worcester on April 17 and has been a standout performer. In 27 games and 94 at-bats, Duran has a line of .351/.406/.585 with three homers and 18 RBIs. He is 7-for-7 in stolen bases.
“He's a game changer,” said Red Sox DH Justin Turner. “He's got power, he's got speed, uses the whole field and plays great defense in center. So it's good to see him having success, hitting the ball all over the place and running the bases.”

Injuries & Moves: Whitlock, Crawford strong for Worcester May 16th, 2023 LATEST NEWS
May 16: RHPs Garrett Whitlock, Kutter Crawford strong in rehab outings at Triple-A Worcester The Red Sox got good news on multiple fronts at Triple-A Worcester on Tuesday night. Whitlock, who has been on the injured list with right elbow ulnar neuritis, started his rehab assignment by firing four innings while allowing one run. He walked none, struck out four and threw 49 pitches. Red Sox manager Alex Cora indicated before the outing that Whitlock will likely make a second start in the Minors on Sunday.
Crawford (left hamstring strain) came on in relief of Whitlock and pitched three innings, allowing three hits and a run while striking out four. Crawford is expected to be activated on Friday night in San Diego when the Red Sox start a nine-game road trip out West.
May 16: RHP John Schreiber placed on 15-day injured list with right teres major strain; LHP Brennan Bernardino optioned to Triple-A Worcester; RHP Justin Garza recalled from Worcester; LHP Ryan Sherriff selected to Major League roster from Worcester There were many moving parts with Boston's pitching staff on Tuesday. The biggest news is that the club will be without Schreiber, one of their most trusted setup men, for at least a couple of weeks due to a lat injury. Bernardino had done well since his call-up three weeks ago, but the Sox needed a fresh arm, necessitating his move back to the Minors.
Garza and Sherriff provide reinforcements from the right and left side, respectively. Garza, 29, was claimed off waivers by Boston from the Angels on April 28. The right-hander owns a 3.95 ERA in 10 Triple-A outings this season with Salt Lake and Worcester. He appeared in 21 Major League games with Cleveland in 2021 and posted a 4.71 ERA with 29 strikeouts, his only Major League experience.
Sherriff, 32, was signed by the Red Sox as a Minor League free agent on Jan. 21 with an invite to Major League Spring Training. He began the season with Worcester and posted a 3.00 ERA in 15 appearances. In 44 career Major League games with the Cardinals (2017-18) and Rays ('20-21), Sherriff owns a 3.65 ERA.
May 16: SS Kiké Hernández expected back Wednesday For the third straight day, Boston's starting shortstop couldn't play due to a sore left hamstring. Hernández suffered the injury trying to beat out a double-play ball in Saturday's loss to the Cardinals.
"He's doing, OK," said Red Sox manager Alex Cora. "One more day. He'll be there tomorrow. We felt like today, he's feeling better. But just play tomorrow, the off-day Thursday. See where he's at with travel and hopefully he's ready again for Friday."

Red Sox snap 4-game losing streak behind Triston Casas, Jarren Duran homers
Published: May. 16, 2023, 9:51 p.m.
By
Chris Cotillo | ccotillo@MassLive.com
BOSTON — Facing one of the most talented pitchers in baseball Tuesday night, the Red Sox put together one of their most impressive offensive performances of the season en route to a skid-snapping victory.
Boston tagged Mariners starter Luis Castillo for seven runs (including four in the first inning) and snapped a four-game losing streak with a 9-4 win over Seattle in the middle game of a three-game set. Powered by three homers (Justin Turner, Triston Casas and Jarren Duran), the Red Sox improved to 23-20.
The Sox ambushed Castillo immediately in the first inning. After leadoff man Alex Verdugo reached on an error, Masataka Yoshida opened the scoring by hitting a rocket off the center field wall for a triple. The next batter, Turner, made it 3-0 when he launched his fourth homer of the year to left field. With two outs, Casas hit a 373-ft. rocket that made it a four-run game.
Sox starter Nick Pivetta cruised through the first three innings before the Mariners tied the game with a four-run inning of their own in the fourth. All the damage came with two outs as Eugenio Suárez singled, Cal Raleigh walked and Teoscar Hernández hit a two-run triple (that Jarren Duran dove for and missed) before Taylor Trammell tied things up with a two-run blast. Pivetta was once again uneven despite picking up the win; he allowed four runs on six hits while walking four batters in 5 ⅓ frames.
The tie didn’t last for long. With Castillo laboring into the fifth, Verdugo and Yoshida hit back-to-back doubles to put the Sox back on top, then Yoshida scored on a wild pitch to make it a two-run game. With two outs, Duran smoked a first-pitch slider over Boston’s bullpen to make it 7-4.
The Sox added insurance run in the seventh (Duran RBI single) and eighth (Yoshida RBI groundout). Newcomer Ryan Sherriff and Josh Winckowski combined for 2 ⅔ shutout innings to bridge the gap to Justin Garza, who tossed a scoreless ninth in his club debut.
Offense powered by multiple contributors
Seven of Boston’s nine starters had hits Tuesday with Yoshida, Turner and Duran all posting multi-RBI games. Yoshida (2-for-5, 2B, 3B, 2 RBI, 2 R) led the charge as his OPS rose to .888. Turner also had two hits.
Bello to pitch last game of homestand
Righty Brayan Bello (2-1, 5.01 ERA) has pitched well of late and will look to help the Red Sox end their homestand on a high note in Wednesday’s series finale. The Mariners will send lefty Marco Gonzales (3-0, 4.42 ERA) to the mound.
First pitch is at 7:10 p.m. ET. The Sox are then off Thursday before beginning a nine-game west-coast trip with stops in San Diego, Anaheim and Arizona.

RED SOX NOTEBOOK Red Sox resupply bullpen with two new arms from Worcester By Julian McWilliams Globe Staff,Updated May 17, 2023, 12:06 a.m.
The Red Sox are in need of arms. The right shoulder strain that landed John Schreiber on the injured list Tuesday was the club’s latest reminder.
“I’ve never had any sort of injury in my career,” Schreiber said Tuesday afternoon prior to the Red Sox’ 9-4 win against Seattle. “So I don’t really know what the feelings are with all the muscles and all that kind of stuff. It’s all new to me.”
Schreiber, 29, left Monday night’s 10-1 loss in the top of the seventh inning in the middle of a Julio Rodriguez at-bat. He underwent an MRI Tuesday that revealed a right teres major strain, which led to the Red Sox placing Schreiber on the 15-day IL.
To take the place of Schreiber and lefthander Brennan Bernardino, who was optioned to Triple A Worcester after Monday’s game, the team recalled righthander Justin Garza and lefthander Ryan Sherriff from Worcester. They each produced a perfect inning of relief in the win.
Sherriff, who turns 33 next week, had appeared in 44 big league games between the Cardinals and Rays, dating to 2017, even making two scoreless appearances in the 2020 World Series.
The reliever made 15 appearances for Worcester this year (15 innings pitched), posting a 3.00 ERA while striking out 16. Lefties have a .569 OPS against Sherriff in Triple A, compared with a .690 OPS against righties.
“He can give us innings,” Sox manager Alex Cora said before the game. “He’s tough against lefties, sinker-slider combination. So he’s done it before. We’ll see if they got a bunch of certain pockets that we can use him, if needed.”
Garza, 29, was claimed off waivers from the Angels at the end of April. The righthander had a 3.38 ERA in four games for the WooSox.
The Sox have maintained optimism that they are getting healthier. Garrett Whitlock (right ulnar neuritis) made his first rehab start Tuesday for Worcester. He’s expected to make another one Sunday before possibly rejoining the team.
Whitlock went four innings against visiting Lehigh Valley, allowing five hits and one run (on a solo homer). He struck out four without walking anyone. Kutter Crawford (hamstring) followed with a similar effort against the Iron Pigs, going three innings, allowing three hits and one run (on another solo homer), also whiffing four without walking anyone in the WooSox’ 9-4 victory.
Crawford’s expected to join the team in San Diego.
The Sox, who currently are using a six-man rotation, ultimately want to use a five-man rotation. Cora said those will be difficult conversations.
Nick Pivetta said last week that he wants to continue to start. Yet his 6.23 ERA heading into Tuesday’s start might suggest otherwise. Whatever the Sox decide, Cora said there must be buy-in from the current group of starters.
“I actually didn’t like my utility role [when I played], to be honest with you. But I had to buy into it,” said Cora. “This is what you get. It’s a tough conversation with certain guys.” Story working in Florida
Trevor Story (elbow) is back in Fort Myers, Fla., continuing his rehab process. The Sox infielder recently threw out to 75 feet and is hitting off one of the Sox’ high-tech machines which simulates a pitchers’ windup. Story elected to stay in Fort Myers in an effort to better focus on his rehab instead of being in Boston. “He’s doing fine,” Cora said. “He wants to do it down there. Kind of like away from all this stuff and just focus on what he has to do. He’s getting at-bats and tracking pitches. Everybody’s comfortable with the process.” . . . Christian Arroyo (hamstring) won’t go on the West Coast trip to start. He will stay back in Boston and the Sox are hopeful that they will get him into a rehab game early next week with the intention being that he will join the club toward the latter part of the 10-day trip.

Mariners @ Red Sox Wednesday, 17 May 2023 7pm @ Fenway
Gonzales 3-0/ 4.42
Bello 2-1/ 5.01
Wednesday, May 17, 2023 at 7:10pm EDT Written by Kevin V.
The Seattle Mariners (21-20, 4th AL West) play the fifth game of their nine-game road trip and the final game of a three-game set at Fenway Park on Wednesday when playing the Boston Red Sox (22-20, 5th AL East). Seattle opened the series on Monday against Boston with a 10-1 victory which was Seattle's third in the last four games played. With its loss to Seattle on Monday, Boston has lost each of its last four after being swept over the weekend by the St Louis Cardinals. Seattle will play without four pitchers as well as position players Dylan Moore and Evan White. Boston will play without five pitchers as well as position players Christian Arroyo, Yu Chang, Adam Duvall, Adalberto Mondesi and Trevor Story.
Pitching is Seattle's Ace in the Hole The Seattle Mariners are only four games behind first place in the American League West thanks to an excellent pitching staff. Seattle is in the top three of four important pitching statistics. The Mariners are first in team ERA at 3.24, in WHIP at 1.15 and in Quality Starts with 21. Seattle is third in batting average allowed by its pitching staff at .228. Logan Gilbert is the leader in strikeouts for Seattle with 54 and George Kirby is the leader in victories with five. Marco Gonzales gets the nod on the mound Wednesday for Seattle. This season the southpaw is 3-0 with an ERA 4.42 and 25 strikeouts.
At the plate, Seattle is next to last in team batting average at .229, 25th in both on-base percentage at .307 and slugging percentage at .25th, while 15th in runs scored with 184. Teoscar Hernandez and Jarren Kelenic are the co-leaders in home runs with eight apiece, while Julio Rodriguez and Cal Raleigh each have hit seven homers. Raleigh is the leader in RBI with 22 while five others have between 20 or 21 RBI. Seattle has hit 70 doubles, three triples and 44 home runs in 41 games played.
Boston is tough at the plate but weak on the mound The Boston Red Sox are in the top four of four major hitting statistics. Boston is third in team batting average at .267 and fourth in each of the following: runs scored (227), on base percentage (.337) and slugging percentage (.442). Rafael Devers has 11 home runs and 38 RBI to lead Boston in both categories, while Masataka Yoshida is second in home runs with six and second in RBI with 24. Boston has 11 players with 11 RBI or more. The Red Sox have hit 94 doubles, two triples and 51 home runs in 42 games.
Boston's weak link is on the mound as the Red Sox are 27th in team ERA at 5.09 and 23rd in WHIP at 1.38. Boston's starting rotation has only nine Quality Starts which is 23rd in baseball and the pitching staff is allowing opposing hitters to average .266 which is 27th. Chris Sale is the leader in strikeouts with 54 and victories with 3 but has a 5.40 ERA. Brayan Bello gets the nod on the mound Wednesday for Boston. The 23-year-old right-hander is 2-1 with an ERA 5.01 and 24 strikeouts.

The pitching matchup for tonight doesn't look much better. Let's hope the offense shows up tonight. Thank you offense. I didn't think they'd be able to do much against Castillo, but they proved me wrong. Keep it going offense. It would be nice to take the series tonight.

Bello earns birthday win while Pivetta heads to bullpen 2:04 AM ADT Ian Browne
Ian Browne @ianmbrowne
BOSTON -- As far as 24th birthday celebrations go, there are few better ways to do it than earning a victory for the Red Sox at Fenway Park.
Brayan Bello took some twists and turns getting there, reaching career-highs in walks (five) and pitches (107) over five innings on a night the Red Sox mashed the Mariners, 12-3, in the rubber match of a three-game series.
On the flip side, Bello (three hits, one earned run) also had a personal best in whiffs with 19 and equaled his career-high with seven strikeouts while riding a generous dose of offense from his teammates.
“Of course, I was super happy, very happy to be able to have my birthday and a win, so it was a very nice day,” Bello said.
The day was not as nice for Red Sox veteran Nick Pivetta, as the club announced after the game that the righty is going to the bullpen. Boston had been going with a six-man rotation since James Paxton returned on May 12, but that wasn’t sustainable with three off-days coming up in the next 12 days.
Since joining the Red Sox late in the 2020 season, Pivetta has been a starter in 73 of his 74 regular-season appearances. The one relief outing was memorable, as Pivetta was dominant at Washington in the bottom of the ninth inning of Game No. 162 of the 2021 season, punching a ticket to the playoffs for the Red Sox. He also had a brilliant outing in relief in Game 3 of that year’s Division Series, firing four scoreless innings against the Rays in a 13-inning victory for Boston.
Pivetta went in a slump midway through last season and hasn’t really come out of it, going 5-9 with a 5.88 ERA in his past 24 starts.
“I’m going to focus on helping the team achieve our goals,” Pivetta said. “I’m gonna go out there and do my job and throw up zeros and help this team win. I just don't think I make this about me. I’ve just got to go out and focus. I’ve got to pitch better and I’ve got to go and start and do that right there. The better I do out of the bullpen, the more I can help the team win and move us towards our overall goal of winning the World Series. I think that's what's most important.”
While Pivetta will try to work his way out of a prolonged rut in his new role, Bello will try to keep a good thing going.
Boston’s promising righty has a powerful arsenal, one that allows him to minimize the damage on nights like Wednesday, when he doesn’t have his best command.
Bello acknowledged that an unseasonably chilly and windy night at Fenway contributed to his control issues.
“Yeah, it was a tricky situation today,” Bello said. “I was battling every inning to get a feel for my pitches, the hands were getting cold very quickly, so it was a good battle with the conditions today.”
But the conditions helped in one situation. With two on and two outs in the top of the second, Taylor Trammell crushed one to deep right that seemed like a sure three-run homer, only to have the wind knock it down. Right fielder Alex Verdugo took an almost comical route as the wind kept shifting the baseball, but he hauled it in just in front of the wall for the final out of the inning.
“When the ball all came off the bat, I thought it was a home run,” Bello said. “I think the wind brought it in and gave Alex a chance to catch the ball, but I got a little bit scared with that ball.”
Bello’s birthday win continued a recent upward trend which has seen him give up two earned runs or less in the four starts since he returned from Triple-A.
“We really like his upside,” Red Sox chief baseball officer Chaim Bloom said. “Tonight he showed it. He showed the upside, and he also showed some of the growing pains as well. That’s part of being a young starting pitcher is working your way through that.”
