Justin Turner, Red Sox storm back to beat Rays in Game 1 of doubleheader Published: Jun. 03, 2023, 4:06 p.m.
By Chris Cotillo | ccotillo@MassLive.com BOSTON — Faced with a big deficit early in the first game of their day-night doubleheader against the Rays on Saturday, the Red Sox stormed back with a six-run sixth inning and beat baseball’s best team for the first time this season.
Justin Turner’s bases-clearing double off lefty Jalen Beeks keyed Boston’s big rally as the Red Sox won, 8-5, on a cold afternoon at Fenway Park. Boston improved to 30-27 with their first victory of the year against the Rays, who swept them in a four-game series in April.
Before the rally, the Sox found themselves in a 4-0 hole thanks, in part, to more shoddy defense from shortstop Kiké Hernández behind starter Garrett Whitlock. With two runners on and two outs in the second, Hernández rolled a throw to second base on a potential inning-ending groundout, allowing Harold Ramírez to score before Yandy Díaz made it a 3-0 game with a two-run double. After Hernández committed another throwing error (his 13th miscue of the season) in the third, Tampa Bay went up 4-0 in the fifth on a Ramírez sacrifice fly.
Boston refused to go quietly. Reese McGuire led off the fifth with a double, then scored on an Alex Verdugo RBI single to put Boston on the board in the fifth. That sequence breathed some life into Boston’s offense before it exploded in the sixth.
Facing Beeks, the former Red Sox lefty, Hernández singled, then McGuire took a one-out walk before Pablo Reyes made it 4-2 with an RBI base hit. With two outs, Rafael Devers walked to load the bases for Turner, who laced a go-ahead three-run double off the Green Monster. Masataka Yoshida (RBI double) and Jarren Duran (RBI single) added on to put the Sox up three runs. After Tampa Bay cut the deficit to 7-5 on a Ramírez RBI single in the ninth, a Verdugo RBI double extended the lead.
Kenley Jansen worked around a leadoff Díaz double to record his 12th save of the year.

Whitlock uneven
In his second start back from the injured list, Whitlock did not last five innings. He got through 4 ⅔ frames, partly because of the defensive struggles behind him, allowing four earned runs on six hits. He struck out five and exited at 97 pitches (69 strikes).
Whitlock has a 5.61 ERA this season.
Game 2 up next
The Red Sox still haven’t named a starter for Game 2, which is set for 6:10 p.m. ET. The Rays will send righty Tyler Glasnow (0-0, 6.23 ERA) to the mound.

Alex Speier @alexspeier · 3h Including the 2nd inning today, the Red Sox have had 37 innings in which they've allowed 3+ runs this year, 4th most in MLB. (Oakland, naturally, leads the way with an astounding 53. The Angels (40) and Rockies (38) are the others ahead of the Sox.)

Julian McWilliams @byjulianmack · 1h The scouting reports about Yoshida's bat were correct: elite. The scouting reports about Yoshida's defense were also correct: not good.

Turner's presence, bat spark 6-run burst as Sox split vs. Rays Veteran's 3-run double turns tables in G1 win; Boston falls to Tampa Bay in ninth inning of G2 June 3rd, 2023 Ian Browne
Ian Browne @ianmbrowne
BOSTON -- This dreary, chilly Saturday at Fenway wasn’t what the late, great Ernie Banks envisioned when he said, “Let’s play two!”
But the Red Sox warmed up their fans with a stirring six-run rally in the bottom of the sixth to turn the tables on the Majors' best team, the Tampa Bay Rays.
Justin Turner's two-out, three-run double off the Green Monster was the go-ahead hit and the Red Sox added on from there in a satisfying 8-5 victory in Game 1 of the day-night doubleheader.
With the game-time temperature down to 48 degrees and the wind swirling at 16 mph for Game 2, the Red Sox put up a strong fight but settled for a split with a 4-2 defeat.
In Game 1, Turner and the Sox were not to be denied, even after the Rays broke out to a 4-0 lead against Sox starter Garrett Whitlock, plating three in the third and another in the fifth.
On a day the wind was constantly knocking down fly balls, Boston at last applied some sustained pressure in that wild bottom of the sixth. Fittingly, it was Turner who applied the big hit, because he was the one brimming with fire for most of the chilly afternoon.
“He’s a good player, he’s a good influence on the kids,” said Red Sox manager Alex Cora. “We fell behind today. And the way we did, it wasn’t a good taste. But he kept going in the dugout and pushing them, and I think it helped us out today.”
Turner, the gritty veteran, missed a 1-1 fastball right down the middle from Jalen Beeks earlier in the at-bat. But he teed off on a 2-2 changeup on the lower, inner half and hammered it high off the wall. On a warmer day, it might have traveled well enough to be a grand slam.
“I hate the weather here,” said Rays first baseman Yandy Díaz. “Obviously it was cold, and that bothers you when you're at bat and on defense. It bothers you both ways.”
But it didn’t bother Turner, who is becoming a hardened Bostonian in his short time with the Red Sox.
“I think you saw in the first inning a couple balls got knocked down,” said Turner. “I just kept mine low enough to where the wind didn't really affect it, but yeah, I’m glad I hit the wall.”
The Red Sox thought maybe they had hit a wall early in the game as they were unable to generate anything impactful against Rays opener Trevor Kelly and the two relievers who came in before Beeks.
But Turner did his best to keep the team focused and provide his teammates with the belief that things would turn.
“Yeah, just every time we came in the dugout, it was just, ‘Come on, let’s go, keep getting another leadoff guy on, let’s build an inning,’” said Turner. “And we’ve been really good at that all year, just building innings and not necessarily scoring every inning but setting things up and putting pressure on them where we get to one swing away from the crooked number.
“We did a good job today of just pushing and pushing and pushing and then eventually, you know, you see the six.”
The Red Sox felt they knew exactly what they were getting in Turner when they signed him as a free agent in December, and he has come as advertised.
“He’s a good player. He’s been doing it for a lot of years, coming from an organization [the Dodgers] that was in the playoffs nine years in a row and he was a big part of it,” said Cora. “Just the at-bat he gives. It’s the quality of the at-bat. He will fight the at-bat, go the other way [at times].”
And on this gloomy Saturday, Turner didn’t want to let the Fenway faithful down.
“I think the atmosphere here every single day, whether it’s a rainy Tuesday or a Saturday night, the fans are here. The fans are loud,” said Turner.
In the nightcap, the Sox nearly pulled off some more late-game heroics. Down 4-2 with two on and two outs in the bottom of the ninth, Jarren Duran looped one into center that looked like it might fall.
Rays center fielder Jose Siri sold out with a dive to make the catch, and managed to come up with it.
“The kid made a great play,” said Cora. “He took a chance. If he doesn't make that play, we tie the game.”

Injuries & Moves: Joely Rodríguez injured during warmups June 3rd, 2023 LATEST NEWS
June 3: LHP Joely Rodríguez injured while warming up in Game 2 The Red Sox were already short-handed in the bullpen for Game 2 of Saturday's day-night doubleheader, and things worsened when lefty Rodríguez felt something while warming up in an eventual 4-2 loss to the Rays. There's a chance he will have to go back on the injured list. Rodríguez started the season on the IL with a right lat injury and was activated on May 15.
"Joely, we got him up, and we had to get him down," said manager Alex Cora. "We’re checking on him. He’s not feeling right. They’re checking on him. It’s probably bicep, right around that area."
INF Christian Arroyo (right hamstring strain) Expected return: Some point in June Arroyo played second base and went 1-for-4 while batting second on a rehab assignment with Triple-A Worcester on May 31. He is now 5-for-14 (.357) over four games. The Red Sox infielder, who has been on the IL since May 7, is back in Boston and the Red Sox will soon re-assess if he is ready to come back or needs to play more rehab games. (Last updated: June 3)
OF Adam Duvall (distal radius fracture, left wrist) Expected return: June 9 at earliest Duvall went 1-for-5 with a double for Triple-A Worcester in his latest Minor League rehab game in his hometown of Louisville, Ky., on June 3. Duvall will continue to play for Worcester for the next few days with hopes of returning to the Red Sox the first day he is eligible on June 9 at Yankee Stadium. (Last updated: June 3)

3-0 Rays early feels like 13-0 Rays
do not expect a win for the local nine this week-end I didn't think we'd win that first game after going down 4-0. Going into the double header, I was hoping for at least a split, so I can't say that I'm disappointed in Saturday's results, although I really would have liked that second win. Once again, I'm hoping for a split in the remaining two games, but it would be really nice to take both games.

Rays @ Red Sox Sunday, June 4th, 2023 1:30pm @ Fenway
Bradley 3-2/ 3.60
Houck 3-4/ 5.30
Sunday, June 4, 2023 at 1:35pm EDT Written by Adam Rauzino Sunday, June 4, 2023 at 1:35pm EDT Written by Adam Rauzino
The Tampa Bay Rays (41-19, 33-27 RL, 35-22-3 O/U) and the Boston Red Sox (30-28, 30-28 RL, 35-22-1 O/U) continue a four-game AL East series on Sunday afternoon. The Rays will send Taj Bradley to the mound. The Red Sox will have Tanner Houck on the hill. Tampa Bay currently leads the season series 5-1.
Bradley Limits Cubs to One Run
The Rays will have Taj Bradley on the mound. Bradley was outstanding in his previous start, allowing only one run (zero earned) in 5.2 innings against the Cubs, but had no help, resulting in another no-decision in a game the Rays lost. The rookie right-hander is enjoying an encouraging start to his career, conceding three or fewer runs in all but one outing, and has a 3.60 ERA and a 1.07 WHIP to go with a 3-2 record in 30 innings pitched on the season. Bradley made his MLB debut against the Red Sox in April and gave up three runs in five innings.
Tampa Bay is concluding a seven-game road trek in this series. The Rays avoided a sweep against the Cubs with a win at Wrigley Field on Wednesday. They have now won three out of their last four series highlighted by two wins in three home games against the Dodgers. Tampa Bay is 5-5 in their last ten bouts.
Yandy Diaz continues to dazzle, accumulating eight RBIs in his last nine games. The 31-year-old first baseman is proving to be one of the best hitters in the big leagues this season, delivering 13 homers with 32 RBIs and a .997 OPS. He has bashed four homers and five RBIs in five games against the Red Sox this season.
The Rays potent offense is averaging 5.89 runs per game, good for second. The pitching staff has amassed a 3.70 team ERA, placing them sixth.
Houck Starts, Rays Conclude Homestand
Tanner Houck will make the start on Sunday afternoon. Houck wasn’t able to find a groove last time out, conceding four runs including two home runs in four innings against the Diamondbacks, and was charged with another loss. The young right-hander has allowed at least four runs in two of his last three outings and has a 5.30 ERA and a 1.27 WHIP accompanied by a 3-4 record in 52.2 innings pitched. Houck has conceded five runs (three earned) in 7.2 career innings against the Rays.
Boston has been inconsistent in recent weeks due to a shaky offense but still has a winning record. They collected a series road win against the Diamondbacks last weekend and dropped two of three home meetings against the Reds this week to improve to 4-6 in their last ten clashes. The Red Sox are last in the challenging AL East.
Alex Verdugo has accrued 10 hits and four RBIs in his last seven games. The 27-year-old outfielder has solid numbers, posting a .291 average with 23 RBIs and an excellent .825 OPS. He is 6 for 19 with three RBIs against the Rays this season. He is 2 for 2 in his career against Bradley.
The Red Sox are posting an average of 5.23 runs on the year, marking them fourth. The pitching has been inconsistent recently and has a 4.70 team ERA, pegging them 25th.
Rays at Red Sox Sunday, at 1:35 PM EST Rainy It's expected to be 50° F with a 59% chance of rain and 14 MPH wind blowing in in Boston at 1:35 PM EST. Hourly Forecasts: Weather.com
