BOSTON — It’s Jarren Duran’s world. The Red Sox are just living in it.
Duran went 3-for-5 with a homer, double, three RBIs and three runns as the Red Sox routed the Athletics, 10-3, on Saturday afternoon. James Paxton went six solid innings in his return from paternity leave and Alex Verdugo homered as Boston won its seventh game in eight tries. With the win, the Red Sox improved to 47-43; the club has the chance to get to five games above .500 with a win in Sunday’s first-half finale against Oakland.
It didn’t take long for the Red Sox to blitz A’s replacement starter Austin Pruitt, who was a late addition after Paul Blackburn was scratched due to illness before the game. Duran singled and stole second before Justin Turner opened the scoring with a rocket single off the Green Monster. The next batter, Verdugo, lifted a towering two-run shot over Pesky’s Pole to make it 3-0.
Duran went to the opposite field for a two-run homer in the second to make it 5-0, then after Manny Piña put the A’s on the board with a solo homer, a Connor Wong sacrifice fly in the third inning once again made it a five-run game. Masataka Yoshida doubled, then scored on a Rafael Devers double to make it 7-1 in the fourth.
In the fifth, Christian Arroyo doubled, then scored when Duran’s third hit of the game bounced into the stands for a ground-rule double. A Yoshida RBI single made it 9-1. A’s outfielder Brent Rooker tagged Paxton for a solo shot in the sixth, only for the Red Sox to answer back with a run on another Arroyo double in the seventh. A JJ Bleday RBI single made it 10-3 in the eighth.
Duran, who entered hitting .410 (25-for-61) with 13 extra-base hits and seven RBIs in his last 21 games, fell a triple short of the cycle but made an impact on the defensive side of things, too, as he took an extra-base hit away from Rooker with a nice catch at the warning track in the eighth.
Paxton got the win after pitching six strong innings. He allowed two runs on six hits while recording three strikeouts as his ERA fell to 2.73. The lefty now has a 1.93 ERA in seven starts since the beginning of June and hitters are batting .185 against him in that span.
Lefty Brandon Walter allowed one run and three hits in three relief innings and picked up the save.
Offense breaks out again
The Red Sox have now recorded at least 10 hits in a season-high seven straight games, which is their longest streak since 2019. It’s the longest such streak in the majors this year.
In total, Boston had 15 hits. Duran had his sixth three-hit game of the year. Yoshida has recorded multiple hits in six straight games this year, which ties Baltimore’s Anthony Santander and Seattle’s Julio Rodríguez for the longest streak this season. Yoshida is now hitting .313.
Arroyo was 3-for-4 with two doubles and an RBI and has 14 extra-base hits in his last 29 games.
One game left before break
The Red Sox have not yet named a starter for Sunday’s first-half finale, though the expectation is that Boston will have a bullpen game. The A’s will start left-hander JP Sears (1-6, 4.09 ERA).
First pitch is at 1:35 p.m. ET. The Red Sox will then have four days off for the All-Star break before beginning a three-game series at Wrigley Field on Friday night.

Duran does it all to back Paxton as Sox win 4th straight July 8th, 2023 Ian Browne Ian Browne
@ianmbrowne
BOSTON -- When the 2023 season started, James Paxton was rehabbing from yet another injury and Jarren Duran was a 26-year-old starting the season at Triple-A trying not to fall off Boston’s radar.
But with the All-Star break approaching, both players demonstrated again in Saturday’s 10-3 victory over the Athletics at Fenway Park that they are arguably the two top storylines for the Red Sox to this point of the season.
Once again, the electrifying Duran filled up his stat line (single, double, homer, stolen base, three runs, three RBIs) and also made a nice running catch to rob Brent Rooker of extra bases in the eighth.
“Man, he's on fire,” Paxton said of Duran. “It's fun to watch. You know, he's such an athletic guy, and so many tools on the field. He's an exciting player and I’m glad he's on our team.”
And Paxton, while turning in what felt like a routine quality start (six innings, six hits, two runs, one walk, three strikeouts), allowed two earned runs or fewer for the eighth time in his 10 starts.
This, following a week in which he saw his wife deliver the couple a baby girl. Due to his paternity leave, Paxton made his start on seven days’ rest.
“Good fastball. Good command of his pitches,” manager Alex Cora said. “He understands what he needs to do.”
The Red Sox (47-43) head into Sunday’s final game before the break having reeled off seven wins in their last eight games after getting swept at home by the Marlins a couple of weeks ago.
Though Boston is in last place in the ultra-competitive American League East, Cora’s club is just two games back in the hunt for the third Wild Card spot.
Boston has had its share of ups and downs, but Duran (aside from one West Coast slump in May) and Paxton have been consistent with their impact.
For Paxton, these past few weeks have been all about finally being healthy again. The 34-year-old made a total of six starts from 2020-22.
Thanks to an elbow that has been rebuilt from Tommy John surgery and his other nagging injuries finally going away (knock on wood), Paxton (5-1, 2.73 ERA, 0.98 WHIP) looks as good as ever.
“Oh yeah, none of us are surprised,” Duran said. “He goes out there and throws as well as he does every single day. We just give him a little run support and we can just chill and relax and watch him do his thing.”
Considering the Red Sox currently have Chris Sale (stress reaction in left shoulder), Tanner Houck (facial fracture) and Garrett Whitlock on the injured list with no set return dates, Paxton’s return to health could not have come at a better time.
Then there is Duran, who lost out to Raimel Tapia for a roster spot in Spring Training, mostly due to a disappointing 2022 in which he struggled with his bat, glove and mindset.
All three of those things have rebounded for the speedy outfielder, who provides a spark just about every day.
When Adam Duvall came back from a broken left wrist on June 9, the plan was for Duran to come off the bench.
That didn’t last long. During his stint as a reserve, Duran had a big game basically every time Cora put him in the starting lineup. And now the manager is finding a way to get Duran in there just about every day.
In his past 22 games dating back to June 11, Duran is hitting .424 (28-for-66) with 11 doubles, two triples and two homers.
While it would only be natural for Duran to feel bittersweet about the All-Star break coming at a time he couldn’t be feeling better, he said he is fine with it.
“No, I think it's a good thing for some of the guys,” Duran said. “It's not just about me, it's about the team. Some guys need the rest. And that's really important for the team.”
Duran, meanwhile, is making sure his opponents don’t have many restful moments when he’s at the plate.
“I'm just trying to be that annoyance to the other team and just get on base, and run and try and cause havoc, and just keep pressure on, and hopefully the guys behind me can get a good pitch to hit,” Duran said.

After ‘crazy week,’ James Paxton continues to be reliable for the Red Sox Updated: Jul. 08, 2023, 10:16 p.m.|Published: Jul. 08, 2023, 8:12 p.m.
By Lauren Campbell | LCampbell@masslive.com BOSTON — It was a wild week for James Paxton, but he ended it on a high note Saturday when he tossed six innings for the Red Sox in his final start before the All-Star break.
Paxton’s wife, Katie, gave birth to the couple’s second child — a baby girl — earlier this week. The Red Sox placed the left-hander on the paternity list Tuesday and he returned to the team Friday. It was a quick turnaround, but the dad strength was on display at Fenway Park.
“It was a crazy week,” Paxton said after Boston’s 10-3 win over the Athletics. “I was in the hospital, my wife gave birth, we have a daughter now. ...”
“He’s probably not getting too much rest during the week. But it’s a good one,” manager Alex Cora said. “Good fastball, good command of his pitches. He understands what he needs to do. They put a lot of good at-bats on him today. ... We needed six today and he did an amazing job.”
The time away from the team didn’t have any impact on Paxton, who allowed two earned runs on six hits with one walk and three strikeouts Saturday. He admitted it was weird to not be at Fenway Park while he was preparing for his next start, but “stayed with it” while he was preparing to become a dad of two.
What’s more for Paxton, though, is that this if the first time in three years he’ll go into the All-Star break healthy. He was shut down last season after suffering a Grade 2 lat tear in his first rehab assignment for Boston, ending his season prematurely. In 2021 he pitched just one game for the Seattle Mariners before undergoing Tommy John surgery, and was limited to five games in 2020.
It’s been a complete 180 for Paxton over the last three seasons when it comes to his health. And now he’s going into the All-Star break happy, healthy and ready to compete in the second half.
“It feels great, just being able to compete at a level I’ve been able to compete at so far,” Paxton said. “As a team, we’re playing some really good baseball right now. So just excited to get back out there and keep on going.
Paxton improved to 5-1 with a 2.73 ERA on Saturday and has become one of the Red Sox’s most reliable pitchers. He went 3-0 in June, leading him to win the American League Pitcher of the Month.
Even before the slew of injuries to the starters, Paxton was throwing the ball well. He’s thrown at least five innings in six of his last seven starts, striking out 45 batters during that span.

“It feels really good,” Paxton said of his consistency. “I feel (like I’m) in really good place, like mentally, just attacking hitters. I feel really good out there.”
Paxton and the rest of the Red Sox have one more game against the A’s on Sunday before going into the break. The southpaw will get right back to work for Boston, pitching in its second game out of the four-day break against the Chicago Cubs.

RED SOX NOTEBOOK Red Sox’ Tanner Houck, recovering after getting hit in the face by a line drive, is taking steps to return to the mound By Varun Shankar Globe Correspondent,Updated July 8, 2023, 4:04 p.m.
Tanner Houck ate his first solid meal in weeks Thursday, ordering Uber Eats for breakfast after a morning doctor’s appointment.
The Red Sox pitcher had been on a liquid and puréed diet since he suffered a facial fracture when a line drive hit him in the right cheek. He underwent surgery to insert a plate into his face June 27.
“It’s definitely [the] weirdest injury I think I’ve ever had,” Houck said Saturday, his first time speaking to reporters since the injury.
The righthander will throw for the first time since the injury Tuesday and said it would be at least two weeks from then until he stepped on a mound.
The Sox haven’t decided what Houck’s role will be when he returns. He has been a starter this year after toggling between the rotation and the bullpen in the previous two seasons. In 13 starts this season, Houck posted a 5.05 ERA. But he was in the middle of back-to-back productive starts, allowing just three runs in his last 10 innings when the injury happened.
“The rest of my body feels great,” Houck said. “I feel like I could be out there tomorrow.”
The 27-year-old said he considers himself very lucky that the ball hit him where it did and said that he isn’t worried about the injury changing his approach as a pitcher.
“I look at it as part of the game,’' he said. “Injuries and unfortunate events are going to happen. We’re standing 60 feet 6 inches away and stuff like this is going to happen. It’s about how you bounce back, come back better, stronger, and continue to put it behind me.” Schreiber eyeing return
Reliever John Schreiber, fresh off the first rehab appearance in his career, said he felt good after pitching two-thirds of an inning for Triple A Worcester Friday as he continues his recovery from a right teres major strain.
“My body’s been recovering really well. Feeling like it’s normal self,” said Schreiber, 29, who’s been on the injured list since May 16.
Schreiber has been one of the Sox’ most reliable relievers over the past two years. The righthander posted a 2.22 ERA in 65 innings last season and continued that success this year before the injury with a 2.12 ERA in 17 innings.
He threw nine of his 16 pitches for strikes Friday and will make another rehab appearance Sunday before the All-Star break. The target he has set for making a return is the Red Sox‘ series against the Mets, which starts July 21 at Fenway Park.
Schreiber’s return would give the Red Sox a triumvirate of high-leverage righty relievers along with Chris Martin, who has a 1.63 ERA, and Kenley Jansen, an All-Star with 18 saves and a 3.34 ERA.
“Schreiber was throwing the ball outstanding when he got banged up,” manager Alex Cora said before the Sox beat the Athletics, 10-3, at Fenway. “Looking forward to [having] the three of them.” Reliever Rodriguez reinstated
The Sox reinstated Joely Rodriguez from the injured list and optioned fellow reliever Justin Garza to Worcester.
Rodriguez has pitched just four innings because of shoulder inflammation and has an ERA of 18.00. He had a 4.47 mark in 50⅓ innings last year with the Mets. He is the fifth lefthander in the bullpen, joining Brennan Bernardino, Joe Jacques, Chris Murphy, and Brandon Walter.
“We know what he can do,” Cora said of Rodriguez. “Stuff-wise, obviously not there yet as far as [velocity]. But it’s a good sinker, it’s a good changeup, it’s a good slider, so we’ll find a spot and use him in certain situations.”
Rodriguez’s velocity has dipped in recent seasons. In 2021, he threw his sinker at 94.1 miles per hour. Last year, it dipped to 92.7 m.p.h. The drop continued in a limited sample this year, to just 90.8 m.p.h. on 53 sinkers per Baseball Savant.
Garza had a 6.11 ERA in 17⅔ innings. Starters set up after break
In their first four games after the All-Star break, the Red Sox are set to start Brayan Bello, James Paxton, and Kutter Crawford before going to a bullpen game … Oakland scratched its Saturday starter, Paul Blackburn, because of an illness. Reliever Austin Pruitt took his place … On Sunday, reliever Tayler Scott will start for the Sox opposite JP Sears for the A’s

Red Sox going for sweep of lowly A's heading into break FLM
The Boston Red Sox have clicked on all cylinders over their first two games against the Oakland Athletics this weekend.
Entering Sunday's series and unofficial first-half finale, Boston has won four straight games and seven out of eight, while scoring 27 runs in just the last three games.
The Red Sox have put together seven consecutive games with at least 10 hits after pounding out 15 in Saturday's 10-3 triumph.
Jarren Duran went 3-for-5 with a double, home run, three RBIs and three runs to lead the way. It was his sixth three-hit game of the season and extended his hitting streak to five games.
"Man, he's on fire," James Paxton, Saturday's starting pitcher for the Red Sox, said of Duran. "It's fun to watch. You know, he's such an athletic guy, and so many tools on the field. He's an exciting player, and I'm glad he's on our team."
Boston's recent success has hardly been a one-man effort. Justin Turner has also been on a hot streak with at least one RBI in eight straight games.
Nonetheless, Red Sox manager Alex Cora knows how crucial Duran's surge has been.
"We know about Alex (Verdugo). We know about (Masataka) Yoshida. We know about the power of (Adam) Duvall," Cora said. "But when we talk about Jarren, give credit to the front office. They stuck with the kid, and we have found ways to play him. He's been very dynamic."
Cora is expected to use Tayler Scott (0-0, 7.71 ERA) as an opener less than a week after his Red Sox debut. He was acquired from the Dodgers in a trade late last month. While with the Seattle Mariners in 2019, Scott made one relief appearance against the Athletics, surrendering two unearned runs over two innings.
Left-hander JP Sears (1-6, 4.09) is scheduled to make his team-leading 18th start for the Athletics, making him their only pitcher to remain in the rotation all season.
"One of the goals was just to be available every fifth day -- give my team 30 starts by the end of the year," Sears said. "Hopefully, I can just keep it up. Stay on top of my routine and stay healthy so we can be there by the end of the year."
Sears has allowed two or fewer runs in six of his last eight starts, including Tuesday in Detroit. He worked 7 1/3 shutout innings and allowed just five hits while striking out four in Oakland's 1-0 win. It was the longest start of his career in the majors.
"Probably the best start of the year for us by a starter," A's manager Mark Kotsay said, calling that outing "the definition of how to pitch. He used his weapons. Kept the ball out of the middle of the plate."
In his first career start against Boston, Sears will look to break the A's out of a 6-16 drought. They allowed nine extra-base hits Saturday and have won just four road series all season.
Brent Rooker and Manny Pina homered Saturday against Paxton.

Red Sox Stats @redsoxstats · 2h In his last seven games, Justin Turner is 13 for 28, .464/.484/.714, .550 BABIP. It’s been a nice Arraez impression, looping balls over the infield and in front of the outfielders. Yikes, I didn't realize Turner's BABIP was that high. Regardless, I love his at bats. I miss JD, but I'm not unhappy with how Turner has worked out. By all accounts, he's also a great human being.

Injuries & Moves: Kluber 'really good' in bullpen session July 8th, 2023 LATEST NEWS
July 9: RHP Corey Kluber 'really good' in first bullpen session Kluber took a significant step toward a return to action when he threw off the mound on Sunday at Fenway Park, throwing 30 pitches in a bullpen session. The righty will throw a two-inning bullpen on Thursday before the team flies to Chicago for the start of the second half. Manager Alex Cora thought Kluber looked much better than he did in the days and weeks before the Red Sox placed him on the injured list with right shoulder inflammation on June 21. It has been a tough season for Kluber, who started the season in the rotation and was then moved to the bullpen. In 15 appearances, including nine starts, Kluber is 3-6 with a 7.04 ERA.
“Good, he looked really good," Cora said of Kluber's Sunday session. "Healthwise, he feels a lot stronger, which is good. You can see the sharpness of the pitches and the ability to locate in that bullpen. It’s still a bullpen, but it looked a lot different.”
July 9: SS Trevor Story could go on rehab 'pretty quick' after break Shortstop Story, who hasn't played this season due to the internal bracing procedure he had on his right elbow in January, is getting closer. Story, who is throwing from 160-170 feet, will continue to work out at Fenway Park over the All-Star break. He thinks a Minor League rehab assignment could be coming soon. Story should return to the Sox at some point during August. His rehab assignment can be a maximum of 20 days.
"I'm almost there," said Story. "I think we'll have a rehab assignment pretty quick after the All-Star break, not exactly sure when. That's exciting that it feels close."

Jarren Duran, Alex Verdugo out of Red Sox lineup against LHP but available

BOSTON — The Red Sox are sitting three of their hottest left-handed hitters, including the scorching Jarren Duran, as they close out the first half of the season against the Athletics on Sunday afternoon.
Duran, Alex Verdugo and Triston Casas will all begin their days on the bench as Boston takes on A’s lefty JP Sears. Rob Refsnyder is leading off and playing left field, Adam Duvall gets a rare start in right field and Kiké Hernández is in center. Masataka Yoshida is the designated hitter with Justin Turner playing first. Jorge Alfaro is behind the plate making his first start as Boston’s catcher.
The decision to sit Duran, who had three hits Saturday and is hitting .424 with 15 extra-base hits in his last 22 games, is sure to raise some eyebrows, but manager Alex Cora wanted to stack as many right-handed hitters as possible against Sears. Boston is starting seven righties Sunday with Duran, Verdugo and Casas available off the bench.
Duran is hitting .154/.185/.269 with a 40% strikeout rate against left-handed pitcher over the last two-plus months. His hot streak hasn’t led to an everyday role quite yet. He’s playing most days in center field but still getting days off in place of Duvall or Hernández. Cora joked that the situation reminded him of April 2007, when he started off hot but eventually was replaced by rookie Dustin Pedroia.
“It’s part of the equation. I know the kid is doing amazing,” Cora said. “He’s doing great and we love it. But obviously, there’s other guys who are here to do their job against lefties. We’re going to find ways to get him at-bats. We will get him at-bats. Today, it’s a lefty on the mound so we go with the righties.”
In Boston’s 24 games dating back to June 11, Duran has gotten 15 starts and came into the game late on seven occasions. He’s expected to enter if the A’s use a right-handed reliever at some point Sunday. Verdugo is also available on a rare day off.
“(Verdugo has been grinding for a while... You can see him, the swing is getting a little bit longer and all that,” Cora said. “He’ll be available. All of them. We’ve got Jarren off the bench, we’ve got Casas off the bench and Dugie, so at one point, if they go with righties, we’ll make adjustments.”
It’s another bullpen game for the Red Sox, who won Friday when lefty Brennan Bernardino started and Nick Pivetta pitched five innings in relief. On Sunday, new reliever Tayler Scott will get the start; lefty Chris Murphy is expected to see a bulk role in relief.
