Red Sox @ A's Wednesday, 19th July 2023 3:30pm
Bello 7-5/ 3.14
Waldichuk 2-6/ 6.66
Red Sox go for series win over A's behind Brayan Bello FLM
Boston right-hander Brayan Bello isn't close to arbitration eligibility, yet his impressive pitching has the Red Sox already thinking about offering the second-year player a contract extension.
Bello is 7-5 with a 3.14 ERA this season, and he has been even more impressive lately, going 4-1 with a 2.21 ERA in his past six starts. He is scheduled to pitch Wednesday afternoon in Oakland in the rubber game of a three-game set against the Athletics.
Opposing Bello will be Oakland left-hander Ken Waldichuk (2-6, 6.66 ERA).
With the exception of a three-batter hiccup by opener Joe Jacques on Tuesday, the Red Sox have pitched brilliantly in the first two games against the A's, winning 7-0 on Monday before falling 3-0 in the rematch.
Bello is 2-0 in July, having beaten the visiting Texas Rangers before the All-Star break and then the host Chicago Cubs in his first start back.
The 24-year-old has been so impressive of late, Red Sox assistant general manager Eddie Romero acknowledged this week that the club would consider locking up Bello for years to come.
"It's all case by case. There's no guidebook for it," Romero said. "But I think Brayan is a special case, and we'll make efforts to talk to him and his group. He's basically done what he needs to do and what we would want of a young starting pitcher in this organization.
"And he's gone about it the right way -- he's a great teammate and he's improved the quality of his repertoire. He's a very hard worker, and he's earned the respect of everybody here. So he's the kind we want to stick around, obviously."
Bello has never faced the A's.
The up-and-comer will see an A's team that, despite the split, has struggled mightily against Red Sox pitching in the series. Nick Pivetta set a Boston franchise record for a reliever with 13 strikeouts in six innings during the Monday win, a game in which the A's got just one hit.
Ryan Noda, who got that single in the first inning on Monday, added a double and a home run on Tuesday. However, Oakland got just five other hits while striking out nine times in the win, which snapped the Athletics' eight-game losing streak.
A's right-hander Luis Medina paved the way to the victory with 5 2/3 shutout innings. Waldichuk hopes to duplicate that success.
On Friday, the 25-year-old made his first start since June 20 in the Athletics' first game out of the break, getting a no-decision in a 5-4 home loss to the Minnesota Twins. Waldichuk allowed three runs on three hits and two walks in 3 2/3 innings. He struck out five.
Waldichuk threw 1 1/3 innings of relief in Boston in the final game of the first half on July 9, taking a loss when he allowed the tiebreaking run in a 4-3 defeat. It was the only time he has faced the Red Sox in his career.
Whatever transpires, A's manager Mark Kotsay hopes to be able to see the entirety of it after getting ejected five batters into the Tuesday game. He was tossed for disputing a running-out-of-the-baseline call on Tony Kemp as the Oakland left fielder attempted to score in the first inning.
"It's not the best of places to watch a game from," Kotsay of being banished to the clubhouse for the duration of the 2-hour, 15-minute contest. "It felt like it took four hours, but it felt good to get a win."

Pete Abraham @peteabe · 1h #RedSox had one hit over the final four innings and were 2x11 with RISP for the game. Normally a 3-3 road trip would be OK. Not this time.

Bello, Sox ready to move on after series loss to A's Right-hander's start derailed by trio of two-run homers after Turner's early jack in finale July 19th, 2023 Sonja Chen
Sonja Chen @sonjamchen
OAKLAND -- As the Red Sox’s rotation has been reshaped by performance and injuries over the course of the season, Brayan Bello has emerged as a beacon of consistency.
With every ace-caliber performance, it's easy to forget that the 24-year-old is navigating his first full season in the Majors and, as such, is not immune to growing pains.
Bello allowed a trio of two-run homers as the Red Sox fell to the A's, 6-5, on Wednesday afternoon in the rubber game at the Coliseum. It was Boston’s first series loss since being swept at home by the Marlins from June 27-29.
"It's part of it, right? He's not going to be perfect," manager Alex Cora said of Bello. "Usually, they don't hit the ball out of the ballpark, [and] they did -- so let's get ready for the next one. Control wasn't great, the changeup wasn't good early on and obviously, they did a good job offensively."
Having tossed seven consecutive quality starts entering Wednesday -- the most by a Red Sox starter age 25 or younger since Eduardo Rodriguez in 2017 -- Bello took the mound in the bottom of the first with a two-run lead on Justin Turner’s 15th homer of the season, but a two-run blast by A's center fielder JJ Bleday evened the score.
Bello surrendered a pair of additional two-run blasts to right fielder Cody Thomas in the second inning and third baseman Jace Peterson in the fourth. It was the first time in Bello’s career that he yielded three home runs in a game.
"Nothing changes," Bello said in Spanish through interpreter Daveson Pérez. "Keep the same routine, keep the same mentality and just get ready for the next start."
In his past three starts, Bello has given up six home runs after permitting only seven through his first 13 outings of 2023.
The long balls hit by Bleday and Peterson both came off Bello's four-seamer. Entering the series finale, left-handed batters had been pounding that pitch, slugging .556 against it.
"We need to go up at some point during at-bats," Cora said. "You cannot live downstairs, you know, sinker, changeup. … The slider is developing. The cutter is what he's developing now, and it's a pitch that obviously he wants to use up in the zone to get chases."
Bello introduced a cutter earlier this season in an effort to offset the damage against his four-seamer, but the results have not been consistent.
"I need [the cutter] to be able to set up some of my other pitches," Bello said. "It's just a work in progress."
Though the Red Sox were able to rally within one run after a surge in the middle innings, they were unable to come back from Bello's uncharacteristic outing.
Following Tuesday night's shutout loss, Boston got off to a promising start by plating two in the first inning on Turner's homer off left-hander Ken Waldichuk. Turner has hit safely in 15 straight games, the longest active streak in the Majors and the second longest by a Red Sox player age 38 or older (Ted Williams, 17 games in 1957).
By the top of the sixth inning, the Red Sox had taken advantage of a sloppy A's defense that committed four errors by tacking on three more runs. Boston seemed poised to add on, but like the previous game, the Sox squandered opportunities by going 2-for-11 with runners in scoring position. Get the latest from the Red Sox

Down the stretch, Boston may look back at this entire three-game set as a missed opportunity of its own. On Tuesday night, the three leading teams in the American League Wild Card race -- the Rays, Blue Jays and Astros -- all lost, and a Red Sox win would have brought them within a half-game of the third spot.
Instead, Boston (51-46) dropped two of three games to the last-place A's (27-71). The consensus among the Sox is that they can't dwell on how they fell short and instead must flush the series and move forward.
The team has faith that Bello can do the same after Wednesday's tough outing.
"He's been fantastic for us," Turner said. "Pounding the zone, using all of his pitches. Unfortunately, today he just made a couple mistakes and those guys didn't miss it. But he'll be back out there … and I like our chances of winning anytime he's on the mound."

RED SOX NOTEBOOK Four-seam fastball is Brayan Bello’s undoing against Athletics’ lefty sluggers By Julian McWilliams Globe Staff,Updated July 19, 2023, 8:32 p.m.
OAKLAND — The last homer by Jace Peterson in the fourth inning ultimately put an end to Brayan Bello’s forgettable day Wednesday.
He put his hand on his hip before walking behind the mound at the Oakland Coliseum. He picked up the rosin bag — he needed something to do — before tossing it back on the dirt.
Bello allowed three homers — all two-run shots — in the Red Sox’ 6-5 loss Wednesday to the Athletics to drop the series.
JJ Bleday hit the first two-run homer in the first. Then Cody Thomas followed in the second. After a clean third, Peterson got into the mix.
There was a trend: all three were lefties. With the exception of Thomas, who saw a changeup, Bello relinquished the other four-baggers on four-seamers, a pitch that has plagued him against lefties.
Bello has allowed five career homers on four-seamers to lefthanders and four on all other pitches combined. For as remarkable as Bello has been, posting seven straight quality starts prior to Wednesday, there’s still a process to his development at 24 years old. It’s one the Athletics, as bad as they are, took advantage of Wednesday.
“It’s a work in progress, because obviously we need to go up with the four-seamer at some point,” manager Alex Cora said. “You cannot leave downstairs, sinker, changeup, sinker, changeup. Obviously the slider is developing, the cutter is developing now.”
When Bello was called up at the end of last season, the Red Sox wanted him to throw up in the zone with his four-seamer. It’s where he could induce more swings and misses while changing the eye level of the hitters. Hitters are batting .227 against his four-seamer this year compared to .378 last season. That’s progress. But when it comes to slugging, lefties have still been able to find the seats.
“We’re just developing a new pitch to go up against the lefthanders,” Bello said through a translator. “I need that pitch to be able to set up some of my other pitches. It’s a work in progress.”
Wong catching on
Wednesday marked Connor Wong’s 11th start behind the dish in 13 games in July.
With Reese McGuire (oblique) still on the injured list, Wong has had to carry much of the load. Jorge Alfaro, who got the starting nod in Tuesday’s loss, doesn’t provide the same assurance behind the plate.
“I think it’s the same,” said Wong of adjusting to his increased playing time. “I’ve just been sticking to the routine, the process. Not trying to really overthink it, getting ready to play a game every day.
Wong’s workload is something the Sox are paying close attention to, but Cora said Thursday’s and Monday’s off days will help him reset. Wong came into Wednesday hitting .343/.368/.457 with an .826 OPS in July.
“He’s been swinging the bat well, which is good,” Cora said. “And I think he’s handling [playing more] well. We will keep talking.”
Wong was 0 for 2 with two walks and a run scored Wednesday.
Bressoud, former shortstop, dies at 91
Former Red Sox shortstop Eddie Bressoud, an All-Star in 1964, died last week of cerebellar ataxia in California. He was 91.
Bressoud was acquired from the Houston Colt .45s before the 1962 season for shortstop Don Buddin. Bressoud hit .270 over four seasons as the team’s everyday shortstop, receiving MVP votes in 1962 and ‘64.
Bressoud, a righthanded pull hitter, was a good fit for the Sox. But with rookie Rico Petrocelli ready to take over at shortstop, Bressoud was traded to the Mets after the 1965 season.
In all, Bressoud played parts of 12 seasons in the majors for the Giants, Sox, Mets, and Cardinals. He retired after helping St. Louis win the 1967 World Series.
Sale set to throw bullpen
Chris Sale (shoulder) will throw another bullpen this weekend, followed by two live batting practices. If all goes well, Sale will start a rehab assignment after the two live BPs … McGuire (oblique) will likely begin a rehab assignment around July 25, Cora said … Pablo Reyes (oblique) will continue his rehab assignment through the weekend as he continues to get reps in the outfield. If the Sox activate Reyes, it will require a player to be removed from the 26-man roster. Kiké Hernández, who played in his 1,000th career game Wednesday, is a candidate. Cora said a decision will be made leading up to the Sox’ series with the Braves, which starts Tuesday … Tayler Scott was claimed off waivers by the A’s. Scott appeared in 10 games this year for the Red Sox and posted a 7.45 ERA. He was designated for assignment Sunday … Righthander Jake Faria, who was recently designated for assignment, cleared waivers and was outrighted to Triple A Worcester, the team announced.

It's like we use to tell SBF, the writers are going to build up huge quads jumping on and off the bandwagon so often. But one of my complaints about the writers is that they discuss results, not strategy. A guy like Lou forms an opinion, and today's results won't change that opinion. And the writers are too two-dimensional. They seem to want to lambaste the team when we are in a slump. and praise us when we do well. The fact is that we are a fairly good team, and not much more or much less than that. Nor do they understand context. I think we are playing well with the 11-2, but part of that is the Oak-CHC-Oak schedule and part of that is the 3-0 in one-run games. It seems as though the Red Sox are back to their losing ways against losing teams. Frustrating, but I know these things happen. As you said, it's the same team over the past 2 games as it was over the 11-2 run. I just hope we get back to our winning ways against the Mets. The Sox are 13-15 in one run games, and 3-3 in extra innings games, so it's not like we've been lucky or anything. Looking at Pythagorean W-L, which I like to do, the Sox are 52-45 (one game better than their actual record), the Os are 52-43, the Jays are 52-44, and the Yankees are 49-48. We are just as good an any other team in the AL East, save for the Rays who should be 64-35.
