Game 114: Trevor Story expected to return vs. Royals (lineups and notes) By Katie McInerney Globe Staff,Updated August 8, 2023, 9:48 a.m.
Shortstop has been a black hole for the Red Sox this season, but the powers that be hope that will change starting Tuesday.
Trevor Story, who has not played for Boston this season after undergoing an elbow procedure in January, is expected to return for Tuesday’s game against the Royals at Fenway Park. Story hit .300/.417/.700 with four homers over 13 rehab games split between Double A Portland and Triple A Worcester.
The Red Sox broke a stretch of seven losses in eight games when they beat the Royals, 6-2 on Monday, thanks to a walkoff grand slam by Pablo Reyes. It was Reyes’s first home run of the season (and just the seventh of his career).
They’re back at it on Tuesday with the second game of this four-game series. Kutter Crawford will be on the mound for the Sox; Brady Singer is pitching for Kansas City.

Stat of the day: The Red Sox won wearing their yellow jerseys on Monday. The Sox improved to 22-4 in yellow, including 7-0 this year.
Notes: Courtesy of Alex Speier: Prior to Monday night’s 6-2 win over the Royals, the seven players — Kiké Hernández, Yu Chang, Pablo Reyes, David Hamilton, Christian Arroyo, Bobby Dalbec, and Enmanuel Valdez — who have played shortstop for the Sox this year had posted a combined .207 average (29th in MLB), .276 OBP (28th), and .329 slugging mark (27th) while their defense graded as 10 runs below average (28th). ... In his last seven starts (45 innings), Singer has a 3.00 ERA with 37 strikeouts and nine walks. He has allowed two or fewer runs in five of those games. ... Singer has pitched against Boston just once. He allowed five hits and struck out five in six scoreless innings when the Royals beat the Red Sox 9-0 last September. ... Crawford is coming off a strong outing. He pitched five shutout innings against Seattle last Wednesday, striking out five and limiting the Mariners to four hits. He was pulled after throwing 81 pitches, and the Mariners scored six runs against Boston’s bullpen en route to a 6-3 victory. ... Crawford took the loss when Kansas City beat Boston 13-5 last August. He gave up five runs on five hits in five innings. That’s the only time he’s pitched against the Royals in his career. ... Catcher Salvador Perez was not in Kansas City’s lineup on Monday night after he was hit on his left hand by a pitch during Sunday’s 8-4 loss to Philadelphia. Kansas City manager Matt Quatraro said the hand was bruised and there was some swelling.

Royals hit 3 home runs, beat Red Sox 9-3 to spoil season debut of Boston's Trevor Story AP
BOSTON (AP) Drew Waters, MJ Melendez and Michael Massey each hit two-run home runs and the Kansas City Royals snapped a three-game losing streak with a 9-3 win over the Boston Red Sox on Tuesday night.
Brady Singer (8-8) allowed three runs off five hits over 6 2/3 innings, and the Royals finished with six extra-base hits and six stolen bases
Adam Duvall had his 10th home run of the season, and Connor Wong and Jarren Duran added RBIs for Boston, which has lost five of its last six.
Waters said the Royals' 15-hit night was a result of recent dedication in the cage finally paying off.
“When we do that we have nights like we did tonight,” Waters said.
Boston was held to three or fewer runs for the eighth time in 11 outings.
Kutter Crawford (5-6) allowed three runs on seven hits over 3 1/3 innings, striking out six and walking two.
The loss spoiled the season debut of Boston’s Trevor Story, who was in the lineup for the first time since last September after being activated off the 60-day injured list following offseason shoulder surgery. He went 0 for 4 with three strikeouts. But he looked good on the limited balls hit his way in the field. It included a throw to first from one knee in the seventh to beat Bobby Witt, Jr.
“Obviously not great tonight,” Story said. “Still working on some timing stuff. It's kind of how it was on my rehab stint. Some good games, some bad games. Still just trying to be consistent with it. That's the main thing right now.”
Red Sox manager Alex Cora said he would like to mix Story in at designated hitter when he's not in the field, something Story said he's open to.
“I need the at-bats to kind of get the timing going,” Story said. “There's no more spring training. It's time to go.”
With Kansas City leading 1-0 with a runner on in the fourth, Waters connected on Crawford’s cutter and lofted it into Boston’s bullpen in right field for his seventh homer of the season.
Three batters later, Crawford let a fastball get too far inside on Bobby Witt Jr., striking him on his hand. Witt was attended to by a trainer but stayed in the game.
It was the final batter for Crawford. He was replaced by Brennan Bernardino, who was able to get out of the inning without any further damage.
The Red Sox cut the lead to 3-1 in the fifth when Duvall drove Singer’s sinker over the Green Monster seats in left field.
Later, Wong trimmed the gap to 3-2 with a single that scored Alex Verdugo.
The rally was short-lived.
Maikel Garcia led off the sixth with a walk against Red Sox reliever Dinesel Lamet, stole second, then advanced to third on a wild pitch. Garcia scored two batters later via Massey’s groundout.
Salvador Perez singled and Melendez followed with his 10th homer of the season to stretch the lead back to 6-2.
TRAINER’S ROOM
Royals: Right-hander Zack Greinke was placed on the 15-day injured list (retroactive to Aug. 7) with right posterior elbow soreness. It’s his second IL stint this season. He missed 11 games last month with right shoulder tendinitis. The 39-year-old is 1-12 with a 5.53 ERA this season. In a corresponding move, left-hander Taylor Hearn was recalled from Triple-A Omaha. Manager Matt Quatraro said he thinks Greinke has been battling small aches and pains throughout the season. “I'm really hopeful it's just the 15 days,” Quatraro said.
Red Sox: INF Yu Chang was designated for assignment to make room on the 40-man roster for Story. … INF/DH Justin Turner sat out Tuesday with the same heel soreness that kept him sidelined for three games last week. He is expected to miss a few more games in hope of avoiding a stint on the injured list.
UP NEXT
Royals: RHP Jordan Lyles (3-12, 6.24 ERA) makes is 22nd start of the season. He allowed five runs over 5 2/3 innings in his most recent start last week at Philadelphia to pick up his third victory.
Red Sox: RHP Nick Pivetta (7-6, 4.19) will make his 10th start of the season.

Crawford falters as pitching reinforcements close in 1:42 AM ADT Molly Burkhardt
BOSTON -- On Tuesday night, the Red Sox got a major boost on defense with the return of Trevor Story. Soon enough, they’ll get a major boost on the pitching side with a number of much-needed reinforcements on the way.
The bad news? Boston’s bullpen has been heavily taxed in the absence of Chris Sale, Garrett Whitlock and Tanner Houck.
The good news? All three are on track to return within the next week.
On a night in which the Red Sox hoped to preserve their bullpen, Kutter Crawford took the loss in the Red Sox’s 9-3 defeat to the Royals on Tuesday, as Kansas City evened the series at Fenway Park. Crawford gave up three runs on seven hits over 3 1/3 innings, before a combination of three relievers recorded the next 17 outs.
“He got swings and misses, but location was off,” manager Alex Cora said of Crawford. “The stuff was OK I think. He was able to get the fastball up, got some swings and misses on the breaking ball. But overall he left some pitches in the middle of the zone and they put good swings on it.”
Primarily a long-relief option to start the season, Crawford moved back into the starter role on June 3 after Sale landed on the IL. On Tuesday, Crawford struck out six batters, generating eight swings and misses on his four-seam and seven on his cutter.
“It was shaky,” Crawford said of his command. “Some at-bats I felt like I was in control, and [then] another at-bat I felt like I had no control. So it was definitely a battle, just going to get back to work and fine tune all that.” Your browser does not support HTML5 video tag.
Boston’s bullpen has covered 460 2/3 innings this season, compared to 537 1/3 from its rotation. The club has turned to an opener in 14 starts, with those relievers responsible for 22 2/3 frames.
The Red Sox will forgo using an opener on Wednesday, and instead give the ball to former starter and now reliever Nick Pivetta. Pivetta has had night and day splits since moving to the bullpen, with a 2.40 ERA as a reliever compared to 5.89 as a starter.
James Paxton gets the ball in Thursday’s finale, before Sale makes his return as the starter in Friday’s series opener against the Tigers. Returning from a left shoulder blade stress reaction, Sale had an encouraging second rehab start with Triple-A Worcester on Aug. 6, tossing 4 1/3 scoreless innings with seven strikeouts.
Whitlock is set to make his first rehab appearance on Wednesday, and Cora is hopeful the right-hander will just need the one outing and could rejoin the bullpen as early as Sunday.
Houck returned to the mound for the first time since he took a line drive to the face on June 16, giving up two runs on three hits with two walks over 1 2/3 innings with Worcester on Aug. 5. Cora said Houck will pitch again for the Woo Sox on Thursday. While Sale and Whitlock are slated to return during this homestand, Houck will likely join the team during next week’s series in D.C.
As they await the upcoming reinforcements, the Red Sox selected Dinelson Lamet from Triple-A Worcester on Monday, designating Richard Bleier for assignment in a corresponding move. The intent with Lamet, who was signed to a Minor League contract on June 27, is to use the veteran right-hander out of the bullpen as a reliever who can offer length.
Lamet made his Red Sox debut on Tuesday, working around a leadoff single in the fifth before he was tagged for three runs on four hits, including a two-run blast by MJ Melendez.
“The stuff is there,” Cora said. “He got in trouble with a 3-2 walk and then they put some good swings on it. The slider looked decent from where I was, just one of those where we weren’t able to shut them down. We got close, 3-2, and we were hoping to at least get one more, but it didn’t happen.”

Injuries & Moves: Story activated for '23 debut; Chang DFA'd August 8th, 2023
LATEST NEWS
Aug. 8: SS Trevor Story reinstated from 60-day IL; SS Yu Chang designated for assignment Story got the start at shortstop, batting third, in Tuesday's game against the Royals for his 2023 season debut. The shortstop plans to play every other day initially as he builds up to playing in back-to-back games. In 13 rehab appearances with Double-A Portland and Triple-A Worcester, Story slashed .300/.417/.700 with a 1.117 OPS and four homers.
"I feel really good at the plate, I feel comfortable," Story said on Monday. "Really all I’m looking for is being able to compete each night and have the timing basis to do that, and I feel like I have that. [My] approach is pretty good, feeling really good with my swing. I think it’s time to go. I feel like I’m ready to compete."
Chang appeared in 39 games for the Red Sox this season around an IL stint for a left hamate fracture. Chang primarily played shortstop (33 games) but also made appearances at first, second, third and DH. He slashed .162/.200/.352 with six homers.
Aug. 7: LHP Chris Sale likely to start on Friday Manager Alex Cora said on Monday that there's a "good chance" Sale will return to the big league club and pitch on Friday in the series opener against Detroit. Sale tossed 4 1/3 scoreless innings in his latest rehab start for Triple-A Worcester on Sunday, allowing three hits and striking out seven on no walks. Sale threw 53 pitches, 38 for strikes. The veteran ace is coming back from a stress reaction in his left shoulder that he sustained on June 1 against the Reds. Sale will be used as an opener when he returns, building up his pitch count as he goes.
Aug. 7: RHP Dinelson Lamet selected from Triple-A Worcester; LHP Richard Bleier designated for assignment The Rockies released Lamet in June before the Red Sox signed him to a Minor League deal. In five games (four starts) with Worcester, the 31-year-old posted a 3.72 ERA, striking out 16 over 19 1/3 innings. This season with Colorado, Lamet went 1-4 with an 11.57 ERA in 16 games (four starts).
Bleier pitched in 27 games for the Red Sox this season, recording a 5.28 ERA.

Red Sox lose: Royals run wild, Boston blown out by team 41 games under .500

BOSTON — Any excitement brought by the long-awaited return of Trevor Story was completely squashed by a disappointing effort by the Red Sox on Tuesday night.
Boston got behind early and failed to get much going offensively in a sleepy 9-3 loss to the Royals, who are 41 games under .500 (37-78). Starter Kutter Crawford got through just 3 ⅓ laborious innings as Boston dropped its eighth game in 10 tries and fell to 58-55.
Crawford entered with a 2.18 ERA in four starts since the All-Star break but needed 25 pitches to get through the first inning, then ran into trouble in the second. Matt Beaty doubled, then advanced to third on a Drew Waters single before scoring the game’s first run on a Kyle Isbel sacrifice fly. In the fourth inning, Waters drilled a two-run homer off Crawford to make it 3-0. Crawford needed 78 pitches to record 10 outs; he allowed three runs on seven hits but did record six strikeouts.
Boston had no answers for righty Brady Singer before the fourth, when Adam Duvall cut into the deficit with a solo shot over the Green Monster and, after an Alex Verdugo double, Connor Wong made it a one-run game with an opposite-field RBI single. The Sox couldn’t keep it close for long, though. Making his Red Sox debut, righty Dinelson Lamet was hit hard in a three-run Royals sixth. Maikel Garcia walked, then took two bases on a steal and wild pitch before scoring on a Michael Massey groundout. MJ Melendez’s opposite-field two-run homer made it 6-2.
Lamet, who had an 11.57 ERA in 25 ⅔ innings with the Rockies to start the season, allowed three runs on four hits in two innings before turning it over to Nick Robertson, one of the relievers acquired from the Dodgers for Kiké Hernández last month. Robertson also struggled in his second appearance with the Sox; after Waters singled and scored Kansas City’s seventh run on an Isbel double, Massey turned it into a laugher with a two-run homer down the right field line.
In the seventh, after Singer (6⅔ IP, 5 H, 3 ER, 2 BB, 4 K) departed, Jarren Duran made it a 9-3 game by tagging the Green Monster with an RBI double off Angel Zerpa.
Royals run all over Red Sox
The Royals had 15 hits but were even more dangerous on the basepaths, where they stole six bases. Bobby Witt Jr. led the charge with two, good for his 33rd and 34th of the season. Garcia, Edward Oliveras, Waters and Isbel each had one apiece as Wong failed to throw anyone out.
Per The Boston Globe’s Alex Speier, Kansas City’s total marked the most steals against the Red Sox since Sept. 6, 2013, when the Yankees stole six bases against Boston. Wong entered the game having caught 17 of 57 (30%) would-be base-stealers to start the year. He’s now closer to the league average of 21% at 17-for-63 (27%).
Story quiet in return
Making his 2023 debut after missing four months as he recovered from offseason elbow surgery, Story had a quiet night at the plate. He was 0-for-4 with three strikeouts and a groundout to shortstop.
Series continues Wednesday
The Red Sox will try to shake off Tuesday’s loss behind right-hander Nick Pivetta (7-6, 4.19 ERA), who will start Wednesday night. The Royals will send right-hander Jordan Lyles (3-12, 6.24 ERA) to the mound in the third game of a four-game series.
First pitch is at 7:10 p.m. ET.
