Another Red Sox victory leaves Yankees searching for answers By Peter Abraham Globe Staff,Updated August 19, 2023, 6:51 p.m.
NEW YORK — Whatever happens this season — and there’s a wide range of options at this point — the Red Sox will be able to take some satisfaction in having made life miserable for the Yankees.
Saturday’s 8-1 victory against their rivals was as complete a game as the Sox have played this season.
Kutter Crawford carried a no-hitter into the sixth inning, which was two innings longer than Yankees ace Gerrit Cole was able to stay in the game as he was beaten up by the lower third of the Sox order.
Red Sox legend Pablo Reyes reached base four times in the game. The Yankees reached four times combined.
It left the last-place Yankees with a 60-63 record and seven consecutive losses.
The Sox are 7-1 against the Yankees this season, having outscored them by 29 runs. They are 11-13 against the other three teams in the division.
Yankees manager Aaron Boone expressed confidence before the game that his team would turn its season around, all evidence to the contrary aside.
Like a desperate gambler sure his luck is about to change, Boone threw the rest of his chips in afterward.
“You battle because that’s what we do. We have no other choice,” he said. “I don’t not think a turnaround is coming. So we’re just going to get to work.
“I know it’s a boring answer for you guys, but we’ve got to try and go win a ballgame tomorrow and expect when we walk in those doors that today’s the day.
“That’s how we look at it. That’s what we are. We’re sick animals in a lot of ways.”
The Yankees were so desperate to generate offense that Isiah Kiner-Falefa tried bunting for a hit with Giancarlo Stanton on first base and the Sox leading, 4-0, in the second inning.
Kiner-Falefa bunted on his own, a decision Boone defended.
“That’s a good play. Yeah, I think that’s a good play,” he said.
There were only a few things wrong with that idea.
It was the second inning of a game at Yankee Stadium; so swing the bat. Plus Stanton has less mobility than the Statue of Liberty. It might have taken two more hits to score him.
Kiner-Falefa popped the bunt up, Connor Wong caught it, and Stanton was doubled off first base by about 80 feet.
There was another cringe-worthy moment in the eighth inning when left fielder Greg Allen lost a fly ball in the sun that bounced into the stands for a ground-rule double by Reyes and drove in another run.
Even the usually rabid Yankees fan base seems resigned to this being a lost season. There were a few boos, but beyond that it was a nice day to get some sun and see Aaron Judge hit a meaningless homer in the sixth inning.
“I don’t really recall experiencing anything like this before in my career,” said Cole, who allowed six runs on seven hits.
Maybe it shouldn’t have been much of a surprise to the righthander. When it comes to facing the Red Sox, Cole is just another guy. He is 5-4 with a 5.16 ERA in 12 career starts against the Sox since joining the Yankees in 2020.
Mix in two postseason starts, including his two-inning drubbing in the 2021 Wild Card Game at Fenway Park, and Cole is 5-6 with a 5.45 ERA against the Sox as a Yankee.
“He’s one of the best in the big leagues,” Sox manager Alex Cora said before the game. “The way he goes about it, the attention to detail. Just getting better during the season and offseason, just adding stuff.
“We play against him so many times. We’ve been battling with him since 2018 when he was with Houston. It’s always fun.”
Reyes drew an eight-pitch walk to load the bases with no outs in the second inning. Two batters later, Cole threw a first-pitch slider on the outside corner that Luis Urías drove into the Red Sox bullpen for a grand slam.
That gave Urías slams in consecutive games and consecutive plate appearances. The first came Thursday at Washington. Maybe Cora will keep him in the lineup this time.
Wong added a two-run homer off Cole in the fourth inning.
It left Cole wondering if he was tipping his pitches.
“Obviously not my best stuff today,” he said. “But I threw a lot of well-located pitches and put a lot of good pitches together. I’m just a little bit confused on why the level of execution on their side was so high.
“But that’s baseball. For whatever reason they were extra focused and able to bring out their best bolts today. Not only did they capitalize on poor pitches; they capitalized on really, really good pitches.”
The Yankees haven’t had a losing season since 1992. Mariano Rivera was a Single A starter that season and Derek Jeter was tearing it up for Central High in Kalamazoo, Mich.
“You’ve got to keep showing up,” Boone said. “When you’re taking your lumps, that’s not easy.”

RED SOX NOTEBOOK Tanner Houck is returning to the Red Sox rotation with his confidence intact By Julian McWilliams Globe Staff,Updated August 19, 2023, 4:43 p.m.
NEW YORK — There’s not much that gets to Tanner Houck. After bad outings or offseason back surgery, which Houck underwent after the 2022 season, he maintains a cool, confident presence.
But even those with unshakeable confidence can have brief moments of uncertainty. Houck, who suffered a facial fracture after he was hit with a comebacker by Yankees’ Kyle Higashioka in June, is set to return to the mound for the club’s upcoming series against the Astros.
For Houck, his uncertainty isn’t rooted in the fear of a freak accident occurring again. Instead, Houck views his opportunity to toe the slab again with a perspective that mirrors his personality.
“I can’t say that I haven’t thought about it potentially happening again,” Houck said before the Sox’ 8-1 victory over the Yankees on Saturday. “But also, at the same time, I’ve thrown, let’s just say, a million pitches in my life, and this is the first time . I’ve gotten hit with comebackers before, shook it off, and got back out there and did my thing.
“I see this being the same thing. I’m not wanting to dwell on it. You manifest things by thinking about it and saying it out loud. So if I think it’s going to happen and say it’s going to happen again, then it might happen again.” Chris Gasper: Red Sox mistaken prospect strategy
Getting back on the hill and “doing his thing” after failure is a unique skill set Houck possesses. He fell flat for much of the season, his first as an everyday starter, posting a 5.05 ERA in 13 starts. Yet in his final two — both of which came against the Yankees — he yielded just three runs in 10 innings. Houck threw four innings of one-run ball in his June 16 start. But the comebacker to the face at the start of the fifth halted what appeared to be a good run of starts in the making.
More than two months after the incident, Houck has a chance to contribute again on a team that has remained afloat despite its deficit in starters for much of the summer.
“I think it boils down to just trying to find it again,” said Houck. “We have an incredibly special team of individuals that are just great people to be around on a daily basis. I hope to come in and just continue where they left off and where I left off.”
The Red Sox are still uncertain when Houck will, in fact, take the mound. If James Paxton is ready to go Monday, Houck will slide into the Tuesday spot with Chris Sale following Wednesday. If the club decides to push Paxton back a day, then Houck will start Monday. This is the healthiest the Red Sox have been all season, and Houck wants to remain a part of it.
“I want to help put the team in a position [to win] and come back and help the team any way I can, " he said. “That’s the main goal. Worry about the playoffs when, when that happens. Right now, it’s just about [keeping it] day-to-day.” Teeth of the defense
Triston Casas was a late scratch because of a tooth infection. Casas went to a local hospital, where the infection was drained. Manager Alex Cora said he hopes Casas is back in the lineup Monday. Casas had made 17 consecutive starts at first base.
Justin Turner took over first base duties despite nursing a bone bruise in his heel. Turner finished the game 0 for 4 with two strikeouts.
The Red Sox don’t have much depth at first base beyond Turner and Casas, with Cora saying that Pablo Reyes, who has never played first in the majors, is a potential option. Yankee killer
Rafael Devers finished 3 for 5 with a homer and an RBI. In eight games against the Yankees this season, Devers is hitting .387 with eight runs scored, a double, three home runs, and six RBIs. Devers’s 22 career homers against New York are his most against any opponent. The Sox third baseman is also tied for the second-most homers against the Yankees among active players, trailing Evan Longoria (35) . . . Alex Verdugo finished 0 for 4 with a walk, snapping a 10-game hitting streak against the Yankees . . . Josh Winckowski will take the ball to start Sunday afternoon. Nick Pivetta will likely follow as the bulk starter.

Red Sox @ Yankees Sunday, August 20th 1:30pm @ Boogie Down
Winc opens followed by Pivetta 8-6/ 4.34
Schmidt 8-7/ 4.76
Written by Adam Rauzino
The Boston Red Sox (65-58, 62-59 RL, 59-60-2 O/U) and the New York Yankees (60-63, 59-63 RL, 55-62-5 O/U) conclude a three-game divisional series on Sunday afternoon. The Red Sox will have Nick Pivetta on the rubber. The Yankees will reply with Clarke Schmidt. The Red Sox lead the season series 7-1.
Red Sox Continue Long Road Trip
The Red Sox could have Nick Pivetta be the bulk innings pitcher on Sunday afternoon. Pivetta struggled last time out, conceding four runs in 4.1 innings against the Nationals, and was able to escape with a no-decision in a game the Red Sox won. The veteran is having a subpar year, posting a 4.76 ERA and a 1.36 WHIP accompanied by an 8-7 record in 117.1 innings pitched. Pivetta has struggled in his career against the Yankees, posting a 7.71 ERA and a 1-3 record in 37.1 innings.
Boston remains in contention in the wildcard, standing three games out. They are in the middle of a ten-game road trek. They won two of three against the Tigers last week but were dealt two defeats in three road meetings against the Nationals prior to this series due to weak pitching, squandering 20 runs. The squad rebounded with a win on Friday and stands at 7-3 in their last ten decisions.
Rafael Devers only has five RBIs against the Yankees this season but has amassed an outstanding 1.067 OPS. The veteran slugger has cooled down recently, collecting just seven RBIs on the month, and now has 27 homers with 83 RBIs and an .851 OPS on the season.
Boston is scoring an average of 4.86 runs per game, ranking them ninth. The pitching is mediocre, issuing a 4.37-team ERA, placing them 18th.
Schmidt Eyes Ninth Win, Yankees Offense Slumps
Clark Schmidt will get the nod on Sunday. Schmidt had a rough one last time out, squandering eight runs on nine hits in just 2.1 innings against the Braves, and was hit with the loss. The rookie is having an encouraging season but will give up home runs. He has posted a 4.76 ERA and a 1.36 WHIP accompanied by an 8-7 record in 117.1 innings. The right-hander has contained the Red Sox, limiting them to one run in 5.1 innings in the first meeting and two runs in 4.2 innings in the second one, resulting in Yankees losses. He has allowed 8 runs with an 0-1 record in 16.2 career innings against the Red Sox.
New York is having a disappointing season and the playoff hopes are quickly dwindling. They are seven games out of the wildcard entering Saturday. The Yankees have yet to win a series this month after they were dealt a three-game road sweep by the Braves prior to this series due to a slump at the plate. They managed only three runs in the series.
Aaron Judge has only collected three homers along with five RBIs this month. The 31-year-old slugger is being walked quite a bit. He has 23 homers with 47 RBIs and a 1.034 OPS in 68 games on the season. Judge posted eight RBIs against the Red Sox last season and homered in his first meeting of the season against the rivals on Friday. Anthony Rizzo remains on the IL.
New York is posting an average of 4.24 runs, ranking them 23rd. The pitching is a strength, recording a 4.07 team ERA, positioning them 13th.
Red Sox at Yankees Sunday, at 1:35 PM EST Clear It's expected to be 83° F with a 3% chance of precipitation and 8 MPH wind blowing out in New York City at 1:35 PM EST. Hourly Forecasts: Weather.com

Pete Abraham @peteabe · 8h Garrett Whitlock was beating himself up about the homer by Judge. But it was a 342-foot fly ball that would not have been a homer in 29 other parks.
The five strikeouts and hitting 96 with his two-seamer should be more the focus. This. Besides, it was a 7-1 game in the 8th inning. You're probably pitching a little differently in that situation than you would be in a 2-1 game. I'm not concerned about that HR.

Red Sox have been frustrating, but they’re sure not as maddening as the YankeesBy Peter Abraham Globe Staff,Updated August 18, 2023, 11:47 p.m. Frustrated by the inconsistency the Red Sox have shown much of this season? The Yankees, who have a luxury-tax payroll of $292.6 million, are proof it could be much, much worse. I have been more than frustrated by the Red Sox offense this season, but I can't imagine what Yankees fans are going through. The Yankees offense has been brutal since Judge went on the IL back in June. This is a good time to mention again that signing players to huge contracts does not guarantee anything.

The Red Sox once again show us they still might have life Of course they do. They still had life after they lost 2 of 3 to the Nats. And they'll still have life after they suffer another loss. It's why they play 162 games.

TBA (Pivetta in some form) vs. Schmidt at 1:35 tomorrow. As I mentioned before, I like Pivetta better in a non-traditional starting role. For whatever reason, he seems to pitch better when he comes in after an opener. I haven't watched Brito pitch enough, and it's a small sample, but I think he is also more effective when he comes in after an opener. At any rate, I'm glad we won the series, but I'd really like to get the sweep today. Schmidt has pitched pretty well recently, aside from his outing against the Braves. Let's hope we can get to him early.
