Blue Jays, Red Sox attempt to get back on track FLM
A day after their chief baseball officer was fired, the Boston Red Sox will pay a Friday night visit to the Toronto Blue Jays, who are reeling after being swept in a four-game series.
The Red Sox (74-73) enter the three-game series against the Blue Jays (80-67) with a 7-3 advantage in the season series.
Before splitting a doubleheader with the visiting New York Yankees on Thursday, the Red Sox let Chaim Bloom go after he spent nearly four years as the head of their front office.
The Red Sox won the opener 5-0 and lost the second game 8-5.
"Obviously it's a decision that ownership made," Red Sox manager Alex Cora said. "They decided to go this route. We worked together all these years and it's never easy to hear that. It's never easy."
The Red Sox went 267-262 during Bloom's tenure, finishing last in the American League East in 2020 and 2022 and sitting tied for last this year.
The Blue Jays, meanwhile, lost 9-2 to the visiting Texas Rangers on Thursday to drop all four games of a crucial series.
The Toronto fans were booing for the second game in a row as the Blue Jays were held to four hits. A two-run home run by struggling Vladimir Guerrero Jr. in the first inning was all the offense they could muster.
In the race for the final two American League wild-card spots, the Blue Jays fell to 2 1/2 games behind the Rangers (82-64) and 1 1/2 games behind the Seattle Mariners (81-65).
Toronto is 3-4 on a 10-game homestand that ends with the series against Boston.
The Blue Jays are scheduled to start right-hander Jose Berrios (10-10, 3.63 ERA) on Friday. He is 2-6 with a 4.34 ERA in 13 career starts against the Red Sox, including a 1-1 mark with a 6.35 ERA in three starts this year.
Boston is scheduled to start right-hander Brayan Bello (12-8, 3.68) in the opener. He is 1-2 with a 6.50 ERA in four career starts against the Blue Jays. In his lone start against Toronto this year, he allowed four runs (two earned) in five innings during a home win on May 4.
The Blue Jays will hope to bounce back after getting outscored 35-9 by the Rangers in the four-game set.
"This series we played terrible, really, in all facets," Blue Jays right-hander Kevin Gausman said. "Our pitching staff gave up a lot of runs, and we didn't score many runs."
Gausman allowed four runs on six hits and matched his career high by issuing six walks in 4 2/3 innings on Thursday.
"We're as pissed as anybody. We're mad," Gausman said. "We're all competitors, we don't like what happened in this series. We've got a bad taste in our mouth. But we can't do anything right now but keep going."
Blue Jays manager John Schneider added, "We need to hit, we need to pitch better, limit walks. You take the lead in the first inning and you've got to continue to find a way to score runs.
"Not a great series, that's not our best game by any stretch of the imagination."
The Blue Jays reinstated third baseman Matt Chapman from the injured list on Thursday and optioned outfielder Nathan Lukes to Triple-A Buffalo. Chapman, who had been out since Aug. 28 due to a sprained right middle finger, went 0-for-3 with a walk.

RED SOX NOTEBOOK ‘It’s never easy.’ Red Sox manager Alex Cora reacts to Chaim Bloom’s firing By Julian McWilliams Globe Staff,Updated September 14, 2023, 7:14 p.m.
Red Sox manager Alex Cora and team president Sam Kennedy delivered the news to the players that chief baseball officer Chaim Bloom was fired before their afternoon 5-0 win against the Yankees Thursday.
According to Cora, who said he learned of Bloom’s firing early Thursday morning, that conversation with his club wasn’t an easy one but, of course, necessary.
“I think it was the best way to do it,” said Cora following the Sox’ Game 1 win of a split doubleheader. “We learned from the last one in 2019, how awkward it was. Ownership came down and Sam addressed the players.”
The awkwardness Cora referred to was when the Red Sox fired Dave Dombrowski just over four seasons ago. It was a similar scenario with the Yankees in town for a four-game series; that time, the news came down just after a loss to New York, leaving players and staff stunned by the news with little time to process it before reporters entered the clubhouse.
Cora didn’t have much to say that night. He, too, appeared shocked. But Thursday afternoon, however, Cora spoke for nearly 20 minutes on his reaction, his relationship with Bloom, and what has gone wrong for his club during the Bloom era.
“Obviously it’s a decision that ownership made. They decided to go this route,” said Cora. “We worked together all these years and it’s never easy to hear that. It’s never easy.”
The Red Sox were 267-262 during Bloom’s four years at the helm. Other than a lone playoff berth in ‘21 that had the Red Sox two games away from the World Series, the Sox will have missed the playoffs three of the last four years at the conclusion of this season. The Red Sox have finished in last place in two of those years, and currently are fourth.
Behind the scenes, there was a strong sentiment that Bloom’s and Cora’s visions clashed, that the personalities didn’t mesh. The feeling was that Bloom cared too much about the farm system without bolstering the big-league roster. Yet Cora said that the pair had a good working relationship while admitting that, sometimes, there were some disagreements on the direction of the club.
“It was a good relationship. I think we grew up,” said Cora, who then acknowledged that his suspension due to the Astros sign-stealing scandal put Bloom in a less-than-ideal position. “Obviously, it wasn’t easy for him early on. I made my mistake and we paid the price. I still remember that day. He was the first one there for me. “ “We actually had a great conversation Wednesday about the future of the organization and what he envisioned. We grew up a lot the last few years. But it’s like in business, right. You don’t agree with everything that your partners do, right? Or what they think. But at the end of the day, you work together for the benefit of your business. It’s the same thing here.” Players react
Justin Turner spent much of his career with the Dodgers before coming over to Boston this season. He’s been one of Bloom’s best acquisitions, becoming a fixture in the lineup at 38 years old. He described his relationship with Bloom as a very strong one, noting that Bloom was at his place every day to check on him after Turner was hit in the face with a pitch during a spring training at-bat.
“I had a great relationship with him,” said Turner. “I talked to him all the time. He was around a lot. He was awesome to me and my family. I appreciate the opportunity he gave me to come over and play in this great franchise as a 38-year-old free agent. I wish him nothing but the best. I think he’s a brilliant baseball mind, and he probably has a long future.”
Trevor Story was the Sox’ biggest acquisition under Bloom, signing a six-year, $140-million deal before the start of the 2022 season. He shared some of the same sentiments as Turner despite much of his tenure with the Sox to date having been hampered by injuries.
“This news never lands well no matter what time of day it’s delivered,” said Story. “It’s a tough day for sure. He was a big believer in me. He’s a big reason why I came here. No one cares more than Chaim. It’s tough because it’s kind of a shared blame because we didn’t get the job done on the field.”
After the 8-5 evening loss, Alex Verdugo, who was a part of the infamous Mookie Betts trade, weighed in on his relationship with Bloom.
“For me, our relationship was a good one, man,” Verdugo said. “He wanted the best for me. He wanted to push me and obviously I came over in the big trade.
“I always want to play good, man. It’s not about living up to the trade. It’s not about me living up to expectations. I just want to play well and perform.”
Rafael Devers, meanwhile, who was present for the Dombrowski firing, too, said Bloom’s departure hit him differently considering the fact that he now has more experience in the big leagues.
“Of course with Dombrowski it was different,” Devers said through a team interpreter. “I didn’t have the experience that I have now. That’s all I can tell you.”
Coaching shake-up coming?
Kennedy said that there was a lot that needed to be improved as it pertains to the Sox’ on-field staff. The Sox, who were seemingly in the playoff hunt until they were swept by the Astros at Fenway at the end of last month, have some talent but lack fundamentals.
The defense has been among the worst in the majors all season. Starters have failed to go deep into games. The offense has had too many hot and cold streaks over the course of the year.
“I’ve been saying all along, it’s on us to get these guys to be successful,” said Cora. “And we haven’t been able to do that. We have to change a few things as far as how we go about our business. We just got to get better.
“If I knew [the solution] we would have done it 16 days ago, to be honest with you. You keep trying to put guys in position to be successful, and sometimes it works. Sometimes it doesn’t. It’s not because of a lack of effort. You see it every day. We’re out there every day, working with these guys to be better. Sometimes it doesn’t happen.”

Series Preview: Blue Jays in desperate need of turnaround vs. Red Sox 'These dudes are resilient': Blue Jays' Schneider not worried about his team's confidence
Mike Koreen September 15, 2023, 9:18 AM
The Toronto Blue Jays are in big trouble following a disastrous series against the Texas Rangers.
To have any hope of making a last-ditch push for a playoff spot, the Blue Jays must find a way to do something they have not done all year — beat up on American League East teams.
The Blue Jays begin a 15-game run against AL East competition to finish the season with a three-game weekend series against the Boston Red Sox at Rogers Centre.
Toronto is a woeful 12-25 against the East this season.
Here’s a look at the Blue Jays-Red Sox series.

Latest on the Blue Jays
The Blue Jays (80-67) were terrible in the biggest series of the season, losing all four games against the visiting Rangers.
The disheartening result pushed Toronto 1.5 games back of the Seattle Mariners for the final wild-card spot and 2.5 games behind Texas for spot No. 2. To make matters worse, the Blue Jays don’t hold the tiebreaker on any of their potential wild-card foes.
The Rangers, who had won six of 22 entering the series, outscored the Blue Jays 35-9.
In the final two games, 10-0 and 9-2 losses, the Blue Jays heard loud boos from their fans.
In Thursday’s finale, relievers Trevor Richards and Yimi Garcia endured a painful eighth inning as the Rangers scored five runs to break open a 4-2 game.
For those looking for a bright spot, Vladimir Guerrero Jr. hit his first home run in 10 games.
Latest on the Red Sox
Boston is now 7.5 games off the pace.
The Red Sox fired chief baseball officer Chaim Bloom before splitting a doubleheader against the visiting New York Yankees on Thursday.
Aaron Judge hit a grand slam in the finale as the Yankees won 8-5 to complete a 3-1 series victory.
The Red Sox, who are tied with the Yankees for last in the AL East, are in danger of finishing in the division basement for the third time in four years.
Big Bat
Boston’s Rafael Devers looks like a good bet to deliver his third 100-RBI season of his career.
Devers has 95 RBIs on the year, along with 31 home runs.
Season Series
The Red Sox have been a problem for the Blue Jays all year, winning seven of 10 games. However, Toronto snapped its winless run against Boston with a three-game sweep at Fenway Park in their last meeting in early August.
Berrios (three runs, 5.2 innings) and Bassitt (one run, seven innings) got the wins in the last two games.
That series also marked the unforgettable major-league debut of Davis Schneider, who homered in his first at-bat. He finished the weekend with nine hits, two homers and five RBIs.
Canadian Corner
Pivetta, Sunday’s starter, is back in the starting rotation for the Red Sox to replace fellow Canadian James Paxton, who was shut down for the season with a knee injury earlier this month.
The Victoria-born Pivetta allowed three runs on four hits in 5.1 innings against the Yankees last time out.
Out of Town
The Rangers are in Cleveland to face the all-but-out-of-it Guardians this weekend, the Mariners host the NL West-leading Los Angeles Dodgers while the AL West-leading Houston Astros are on the road for a series against the lowly Kansas City Royals.
The Astros are only a half-game up on the Rangers, so they still could fall back into the wild-card race.
Up Next
After an off-day Monday, the Blue Jays begin their final road trip of the season with a three-game series against the Yankees.

Red Sox lineup: Triston Casas (shoulder) a late scratch as road trip begins Updated: Sep. 15, 2023, 5:48 p.m.|Published: Sep. 15, 2023, 4:34 p.m.
By Sean McAdam | sean.mcadam@masslive.com About 90 minutes before gametime Friday, the Red Sox scratched Triston Casas from the lineup, citing “shoulder soreness” as the reason for the late change.
That resulted in a completely overhauled lineup for the Red Sox, with Justin Turner, originally the DH, being moved to first base to take over for Casas at the position.
It also led to Ceddanne Rafaela, who wasn’t in the original lineup, going into the leadoff spot in center, and Masataka Yoshida, originally in left, replacing Turner as the DH.
Initially, Wilyer Abreu was to be in center, but was later shifted to left.
The rookie has been getting a long look this month as the Red Sox try to determine how much he can be counted on in 2024. So far, Abreu has been mostly impressive, slashing .367/.436/.510 with one homer and 10 RBI in 17 games to date.
Since the Red Sox returned from their most recent road trip, Adam Duvall has started just three of the last seven games. Friday night, as the team kicks off its penultimate road trip of the season, Duvall is again absent from the starting lineup.
The Red Sox haven’t said much about Duvall experiencing any specific injury, other than to say he was battling some “general soreness.” One thing, however, is clear: Duvall doesn’t look to be 100 percent when he does play. Over his last three games, he’s hitless in his last 11 at-bats with nine strikeouts.

we also have another Hurricane coming, Lee hits us mostly in the Western parts of the province and we will feel it, but not as bad as the last few big ones.
Would not be shocked if we lose power though.

Berríos goes 7 innings, Guerrero hits 3-run HR as Blue Jays halt slump, beat Red Sox 3-0 AP
TORONTO (AP) José Berríos and two relievers combined on a five-hitter, Vladimir Guerrero Jr. hit a three-run home run and the Toronto Blue Jays beat the Boston Red Sox 3-0 Friday night to snap a four-game losing streak.
Berríos (11-10) allowed all five hits and struck out eight over seven sharp innings as the Blue Jays bounced back after being swept in a four-game series against AL wild-card rival Texas.
“We’re pretty good at turning the page,” Guerrero said through a translator. “It was a tough series against the Rangers but we turned the page.”
Toronto came in 1 1/2 games behind Seattle for the third wild-card spot.
Jordan Hicks worked the eighth and Jordan Romano finished Toronto’s 14th shutout, earning his 35th save in 38 chances. Seattle led the AL with 15 shutouts entering play Friday.
On the day baseball celebrated Hall of Famer Roberto Clemente, fellow Puerto Rican Berríos delivered his sixth scoreless outing of the season.
“Tonight was one of those nights you have everything working in your favor,” Berríos said.
Berríos beat Boston at home for the first time in seven career opportunities. He has won back-to-back decisions after losing his previous three.
“That’s probably the best I’ve seen him throughout the years,” Puerto Rican-born Red Sox manager Alex Cora said of Berríos. “He was pretty good today, stuff-wise.”
None of the three Blue Jays pitchers allowed a walk.
Toronto has won six of its past nine meetings against AL East opponents.
Justin Turner had two hits for the Red Sox, but Boston lost its fourth straight against Toronto after winning the first seven meetings this season.
The Red Sox (74-74) have lost eight of 10 and are at .500 for the first time since they were 43-43 on July 4. With the Yankees beating Pittsburgh, Boston dropped into last place in the AL East
Guerrero homered for the second straight game when he went deep on the first pitch he saw from Boston right-hander Brayan Bello in the third. Guerrero’s two-out drive was his team-leading 23rd.
“When you can hit a home run with guys on, with traffic, it’s a momentum shifter,” Blue Jays manager John Schneider said.
It was the fifth time this season and the 20th time in his career that Guerrero has homered in back-to-back games.
Bello (12-9) allowed three runs and four hits in six innings. He walked one and struck out a career-high 10, fanning the final three batters he faced.
“If you take away Vladdy’s pitch, my outing was great,” Bello said through a translator. “I was able to locate the pitches where I wanted to.”
TRAINER’S ROOM
Red Sox: 1B Triston Casas was scratched from the lineup because of a sore right shoulder.

RED SOX NOTEBOOK ‘That’s something that intrigues me.’ Front office role interests Red Sox manager Alex Cora, but not now By Peter Abraham Globe Staff,Updated September 15, 2023, 8:11 p.m.
TORONTO — Alex Cora is not interested in running baseball operations for the Red Sox — at least not yet.
“That’s something that intrigues me,” Cora said before Friday’s 3-0 loss to the Blue Jays. “I’ve done it before on a lower scale, the WBC and winter ball. But it’s something that right now — where I’m at, where we’re at as a family — it’s too soon to start talking about it.”
Cora avoided that question Thursday after the Sox fired chief baseball officer Chaim Bloom but was more willing to discuss the situation a day later.
“Honestly I’m here to manage the team,” Cora said. “I turn 48 next month and I feel very comfortable [with] what I’m doing.
“I haven’t talked to [Red Sox owners] Tom [Werner] and John [Henry] at length about what’s going to happen here. But I think this is a place that’s a special place and we’re going to do some special things in the future. I just want to be part of it.”
Assistant general manager Eddie Romero is with the team for this six-game road trip and Cora was asked about Romero’s potential candidacy before a 3-0 loss to the Blue Jays in the series opener. Romero has been with the Sox since 2006 and built a good reputation for his work in international scouting and player development.
“Out of respect to Chaim and everything that [the team] went through [Thursday], I’d rather not talk about the topic of GMs and candidates,” Cora said. “But [Romero], he’s capable. He’s been in the organization for a lot of years; he knows the game. He’s educated, well-prepared and been surrounded by quality people, Chaim included. He’s a good baseball man.”
Romero declined comment on his interest in the job other than to say he does hope to advance in the industry.
Bloom expresses gratefulness in statement
Via MLB.com, Bloom released a statement about his tenure with the Sox.
“I will always be grateful to John, Tom, Mike [Gordon, Fenway Sports Group president] and Sam [Kennedy, team president] for trusting me to lead the Red Sox baseball operations department. Every day, I gave my teammates and this organization everything I had, and I never took a second for granted,” the statement read.
“Great things are now in store for the Red Sox. And while I’m sad that I won’t be watching them from the same chair, I will still be very proud.
“Red Sox fans, you are the best. Your passion fueled me daily, and added meaning to everything I’ve done here. You very much deserve more championships. And you will get them.” Sale returns to mound on longer rest
Chris Sale will face Toronto’s Chris Bassitt in the second game of the series Saturday. The lefthander is 1-2 with a 5.53 earned run average in six starts since coming off the injured list Aug. 11.
Sale’s fastball averaged only 92.3 miles per hour in his last start, which led to his allowing seven runs over four innings against the Orioles. He was then given six days off in the hopes of rejuvenating his arm.
“Obviously, it hasn’t been easy,” Cora said. “You see flashes of 96 and 97 but he’s been pitching at 91-92 and the offspeed pitches are on and off.”
Sale has not faced the Blue Jays since July 18, 2019, when he threw six shutout innings and struck out 12 at Fenway Park.
Casas scratched with sore shoulder
Triston Casas was taken out of the lineup after arriving at the ballpark with a sore right shoulder. The hope is the rookie first baseman will be able to play Saturday … The first roster move of the post-Bloom era was optioning lefthander Brandon Walter to Triple A Worcester and recalling lefthander Chris Murphy (two perfect innings) … Corey Kluber is scheduled to pitch three innings Saturday for Worcester. It would be the righthander’s third game in eight days as he returns from shoulder inflammation. Righthander Kaleb Ort (elbow) is moving closer to a rehab assignment. Worcester ends its season Sept. 24 with Double A Portland finishing up Sunday. Whether Kluber and/or Ort rejoin the major league roster is uncertain. The general goal is for them to finish the season healthy … Cora said one of his goals over the final weeks of the season is to give Luis Urías (0 for 3) as much playing time as he can handle at second base. The 26-year-old hit .227 with a .708 OPS in his first 27 games for the Sox after being acquired at the trade deadline. Urias had a .789 OPS over 150 games for the Brewers in 2021 but has hit .228 since with a .713 OPS … Players and coaches wore No. 21 patches on Roberto Clemente Day. For Cora, a fellow Puerto Rican, it was especially meaningful. “All over the world, [Clemente] did magnificent things,” he said. Cora feels Puerto Rico has not done enough to honor Clemente and keep his legacy alive.

Pete Abraham @peteabe · 2h Casas scratched again
Kluber was shut down and went home. No minor league game today … Casas could be headed for imaging. Chance Dalbec could come up.
Pablo Reyes and Connor Wong getting some reps at first base pre-game.
Trevor Story is still working out the details. But he plans to host some of the middle infield prospects for a mini-camp in Texas during the offseason. It was something Troy Tulowitzki did for him when he was in High A.
And there you go: Triston Casas on the 10-day IL (retroactive to September 15) with right shoulder inflammation. Bobby Dalbec recalled.
Casas could return with six games left in the season. Guessing they would not mess with a shoulder injury, even a mild one, for the sake of six games.
