'We didn't cash in': Cold spell continues for Sox on offense 1:11 AM ADT Ian Browne
Ian Browne @ianmbrowne
ATLANTA – With one swing, Tyler O’Neill seemed poised to turn the tide on what had been a night of futility and frustration for the Boston bats.
There were two on and two outs in the top of the eighth in a tie game, and O’Neill placed a drive that seemed headed for the the gap in left-center at Truist Park.
But Adam Duvall, the right-handed hitter O’Neill essentially replaced on the Red Sox, came out of nowhere and made a diving catch to prevent at least one run from scoring, and possibly two.
Out of thin air, Duvall turned what could have been a satisfying win for Boston into a 4-2 defeat against the Braves.
“I think that [could have been] the key hit of the game,” said Red Sox third baseman Rafael Devers. “Duvall made a great catch, made a great play. That’s going to happen. That’s baseball.”
Thus far, the Red Sox are 1-3 on a road trip that will conclude on Wednesday when Nick Pivetta is activated from the injured list to face former teammate Chris Sale.
Despite their recent struggles offensively, the challenge of facing Sale is one Boston will embrace.
“We know how good of a pitcher he is. He’s a superstar,” Devers said. “We know how competitive he is but we are as competitive as he is. We know it’s a tough matchup but we’re up to it and we’re ready to face him.”
The past five games, the common theme in all four losses is that runs have been scarce.
In Tuesday’s defeat, the Sox went 1-for-14 with runners in scoring position while leaving 13 on base.
“We didn’t do much,” Red Sox manager Alex Cora said. “We had traffic all over the place and we didn’t cash in. I think in certain situations, we have to be humble, take what they give us, advance the runner, put the ball in play and we didn’t do that. And [Duvall] made that play at the end. Overall, the line is moving. Now we’ve got to cash in.”
Through it all, the Red Sox (19-17) continue to pitch just about every game.
This isn’t to say the offense hasn’t contributed. On April 27, the Sox routed the Cubs, 17-0. As recently as Sunday at Target Field, Cora’s squad belted the Twins, 9-2.
Is it just a matter of time before the offense produces on a more consistent basis?
“One hundred percent,” said righty Kutter Crawford. ”It’s early in the season. Obviously we’ve seen what the offense can do. I think it’s just a matter of time before we start clicking on all cylinders.”
Here are some other takeaways from Tuesday.
Crawford continues to shine While Crawford put his team in an early hole by giving up a two-run homer to No. 9 hitter Jarred Kelenic in the bottom of the third, the righty was nails otherwise.
It was Crawford’s fourth consecutive quality start in his coming-of-age season. The 27-year-old has a 1.75 ERA and has allowed two earned runs or fewer in seven of his eight starts.
“I just focus on making sure I'm on the attack,” said Crawford. “I try not to get behind in counts. I try to get ahead on the first pitch. And I feel like I was able to do that after that [third inning]. But yeah, that’s kind of the focus there. Stay on the attack, fill up the zone, make them swing and try to go six.” Get the latest from the Red Sox

Double play confusion When the Braves added a second run in the bottom of the eighth to take a 4-2 lead, it could have been avoided with some better communication by Boston’s young middle infield.
On a grounder to first baseman Garrett Cooper, second baseman Vaughn Grissom moved toward the bag to retrieve the throw in hopes of turning a double play. But shortstop Ceddanne Rafaela took the throw instead. He got the force, but couldn’t get the ball back to first base because Grissom was in his way.
“[Rafaela] was playing pull. He assumed that Vaughn was going to get to the bag,” said Cora. “The throw was to [Rafaela], so he made sure to get one out. We’ll get it right. That stuff is gonna happen. We’ve got a kid playing for the first time at second base on an everyday basis and we've got a kid at shortstop. It’s a learning experience and we’ll get better at it.”

Injuries & Moves: Bello, Whitlock inch closer toward returns; Refsnyder available May 7th, 2024
MLB.com LATEST NEWS
May 7: RHPs Brayan Bello, Garrett Whitlock take key steps Boston's starting rotation could be back in full working order soon. Nick Pivetta is being activated to start on Wednesday. Bello made a Minor League rehab assignment start for Double-A Portland on Tuesday, giving up four hits and three runs (two earned) over 2 2/3 innings. Bello walked two and struck out five, throwing 52 pitches. There's a chance he could start Sunday or Monday for the Red Sox.
Whitlock, who has been out since April 17 with a left oblique strain, threw two innings in the bullpen prior to Tuesday's game and will throw live batting practice on Friday at Fenway Park. Assuming there are no hiccups, Whitlock could begin a Minor League rehab assignment on May 15, which could position him to be activated by May 20.
May 7: OF Rob Refsnyder ready to go following Sunday exit Refsnyder, who experienced discomfort in his left hamstring on Sunday in Minneapolis that forced him to exit midway through the game, was available again on Tuesday. The veteran outfielder is expected to be in the lineup against Braves lefty Chris Sale on Wednesday.
May 7: DH Masataka Yoshida to get second opinion on Wednesday Yoshida, who didn't travel with the Red Sox last weekend to Minneapolis, was back with the club in Atlanta. In fact, he will get a second opinion on his ailing left thumb from a specialist in Atlanta at some point on Wednesday. That should determine whether the left-handed hitter needs to undergo surgery. Yoshida was placed on the injured list on May 1, with the move made retroactive to April 29.
• All Red Sox transactions 10-DAY/15-DAY INJURED LIST
RHP Nick Pivetta (right elbow flexor strain) Expected return: May 8 Pivetta will be activated on May 8 and face off against his former teammate, Chris Sale. In a Minor League rehab start for Triple-A Worcester on May 2, Pivetta pitched three innings, allowing three hits and walking four. After Pivetta was diagnosed with a flexor strain in his right elbow, the Red Sox placed the righty on the injured list, retroactive to April 6. (Last updated: May 7)
DH Masataka Yoshida (left thumb strain) Expected return: TBD Yoshida will get a second opinion with a hand specialist in Atlanta on May 8. The designated hitter suffered a left thumb strain against the Cubs on April 28. The second opinion should determine if he needs to have surgery. (Last updated: May 7)
RHP Garrett Whitlock (left oblique strain) Expected return: Around May 20 Whitlock threw two innings in the bullpen on May 7, and is scheduled to throw live batting practice at Fenway Park on May 10. If Whitlock can make a Minor League rehab start on May 15, he could be back with the Red Sox by May 20. The righty had a 1-0 record and a 1.96 ERA in four starts before the injury. (Last updated: May 7)
RHP Brayan Bello (right lat strain) Expected return: May 13 or thereabouts Bello pitched 2 2/3 innings in a Minor League rehab game for Double-A Portland on May 7 and could reclaim his spot in the rotation as early as May 12. Bello was placed on the injured list on April 24, retroactive to April 21. (Last updated: May 7)
INF/OF Romy Gonzalez (left wrist sprain) Expected return: Soon Gonzalez played three straight Minor League rehab games for Triple-A Worcester on May 3-5. The Red Sox will soon determine what his next step is. (Last updated: May 7)

Red Sox sending rookie RHP down, making multiple roster moves Wednesday

ATLANTA — The Red Sox are expected to make multiple roster moves before taking on the Braves in the finale of a two-game series Wednesday night at Truist Park.
The first is on the pitching side, with starter Nick Pivetta being activated from the 10-day injured list to pitch for the first time since April 2. Pivetta has been on the IL since April 9 due to a flexor strain in his pitching elbow but will return from a six-week absence to start for Boston opposite old friend Chris Sale.
Indications are that Japanese rookie right-hander Naoyuki Uwasawa, who was exchanging goodbyes with coaches in the visitors clubhouse at Truist Park after Tuesday’s loss, will be optioned back to Triple-A Worcester to make room on the active roster for Pivetta. Uwasawa pitched just twice (four innings) since being called up from Triple-A Worcester on April 28, logging two innings on back-to-back days Thursday and Friday. The 30-year-old NPB veteran threw two perfect frames Thursday against the Giants but ran into trouble Friday, allowing two hits, two walks and a run against the Twins. The Sox were using him as a long reliever.
In something of a surprise, it also looks like the Red Sox may be making a move on the position player side of things, too. Utility man Romy Gonzalez, who has been sidelined since April 11 with a left wrist sprain, was in the clubhouse after the game and is a candidate to be activated before Wednesday’s game as a bench option. Gonzalez played three rehab games at Triple-A Worcester from Friday to Sunday but did not appear for the WooSox on Tuesday in Buffalo. It’s unlikely he’s joining the Red Sox for the final day of their road trip to not be activated.
The move to get Gonzalez onto the roster is newcomer Zack Short being designated for assignment, according to The Boston Globe’s Julian McWilliams. Short joined the Sox via trade on May 1 and is 0-for-7 with four strikeouts in two games (May 2 and May 5). He’s out of minor league options so the Red Sox couldn’t have just optioned him to Triple-A. Short’s designation means David Hamilton remains on the active roster despite starting just one of Boston’s last 10 games and is barely being used as a reserve. Hamilton can provide speed off the bench late in games.

RED SOX NOTEBOOK Jarren Duran, Wilyer Abreu have led Red Sox outfield’s turnaround to among baseball’s best By Julian McWilliams Globe Staff,Updated May 7, 2024, 8:21 p.m.
ATLANTA — Ceddanne Rafaela’s outfield play to start the season was something the Red Sox hadn’t seen since the days of Jackie Bradley Jr., Mookie Betts, and Andrew Benintendi.
Much like Trevor Story at shortstop, Rafaela provided the outfield with stability. However, once Story went down with a season-ending shoulder injury, the errors began to pile up in the infield and the Sox had no choice but to put Rafaela at shortstop — the position he played when the Sox signed him in 2017.
That, of course, created instability in the outfield. Tyler O’Neill is a two-time Gold Glover, but the Sox have to manage his innings. While Jarren Duran had improved as a center fielder, the Sox thought he might be better in left. Wilyer Abreu , in his first full season in the big leagues, didn’t have much experience in right field at Fenway — the hardest right field in baseball because of its dimensions.
Both Duran and Abreu responded to the challenge and then some. Heading into Tuesday’s series opener against the Braves at Truist Park, the Sox were tied with the Tigers for the major-league lead in defensive runs saved in the outfield with 10.
In 308 innings, Duran led all outfielders with nine defensive runs saved.
“We’ve come a long way from the Kansas City game,” said manager Alex Cora, referencing the August 2022 Sunday in which Duran made multiple misplays in center. “And now he’s the [best defender], metrics wise, in the big leagues. You know, he worked hard during the offseason last year with [outfield/third base coach] Kyle Hudson. They have a great relationship. Jarren, in left field and center field, has been good.”
Abreu, meanwhile, is tied with the Dodgers’ Teoscar Hernández for the most defensive runs saved (five) in right.
“I think we were doing very well as a group,” Abreu said through a team interpreter. “We are trying to make the best decisions when it comes to throwing to the right bases and making good decisions in the outfield.”
“Right now, the numbers speak for themselves. He’s the best defender in right field,” added Cora.
Abreu, who always welcomed the challenge of right field at Fenway, is learning all its nuances. He said quick decisions and quick reads are a necessity. Otherwise, you run the risk of the ball sailing overhead for extra bases.
“You have to have a quick first step to make sure you cover the ground,” noted Abreu, be it coming in on the ball or going back.
It’s all part of a huge defensive leap for the team, one made largely without its star defender. Getting close
The Red Sox rotation is finally coming back into focus. Nick Pivetta will be reinstated from the injured list Wednesday to start the series finale against the Braves, with reliever Naoyuki Uwasawa optioned to Triple A Worcester to make room. Brayan Bello pitched 2⅔ innings in a rehab outing Tuesday for Double A Portland, and is scheduled to take the ball Sunday against the Nationals at Fenway. Garrett Whitlock tossed a bullpen Tuesday at Truist Park, with plans for a live batting practice Friday. “It’s good,” said Cora on his pitchers getting healthy. “I do believe giving us more than a bullpen game is always good. Maybe we just [start them for] five innings in the beginning and then we stretch them out, but obviously, we are in a part of our schedule this week where we should be OK.” The Sox have their second off day this week Thursday, giving starters more time to recover before a run of 13 games in as many days . . . Zack Short was designated for assignment following the 4-2 loss. Infielder Romy Gonzalez (wrist) is with the club in Atlanta and will be reinstated from the IL Wednesday.

Boston Red Sox vs. Atlanta Braves
Wednesday, May 8, 2024 at 7:20pm EDT Written by The Viking Boston Red Sox vs.
Boston Red Sox (19-16) vs. Atlanta Braves (20-12)
The 2024 Major League Baseball season goes on Wednesday, May 8, with the Boston Red Sox taking on the Atlanta Braves in the interleague showdown at Truist Park in Atlanta, Georgia, with the first pitch at 7:20 PM ET.
Boston and Atlanta wrap up a two-game series, and Tuesday’s opener has been excluded from the analysis. The Red Sox were looking for their fourth straight win over the Braves after taking three out of four games from Atlanta in 2023.
The Sawx close down a five-game road trip The Boston Red Sox snapped a three-game skid last Sunday, beating the red-hot Minnesota Twins 9-2 as +155 road underdogs. The Sawx avoided a sweep in a three-game set at Target Field and put an end to Minnesota’s 12-game winning streak. It was Boston’s fifth win in nine games, as the Red Sox have won two of their previous three series, taking two out of three games from the San Francisco Giants and Chicago Cubs.
The Red Sox are slashing .246/.335/.385 with 15 doubles, three triples, and just two home runs in the last seven days and 195 at-bats. Their pitching staff has done an excellent job during that span, tallying a 2.25 ERA, 1.02 WHIP, and a .209 batting average against in 52 innings of work.
Nick Pivetta is projected to take the mound Wednesday at Truist Park. He’s set to return from an IL after recovering from a right elbow flexor strain. Pivetta has been terrific across two starts this season, posting a 0.82 ERA, 0.82 WHIP, and 13/1 K/BB ratio in 11 innings of work. The 31-year-old right-hander is 7-4 with an underwhelming 5.04 ERA and 1.37 WHIP in 15 career starts and four relief appearances against Atlanta.
The Braves hope to break out of their funk The Atlanta Braves have dropped two straight series, winning just one game in the process. After beating the Mariners 5-2 to avoid a sweep in a three-game set at T-Mobile Park in Seattle, the Braves were swept by the LA Dodgers at Dodger Stadium. The Dodgers outscored the Braves 20-6 in a three-game series.
The Braves’ offense has been in shambles as of late. Atlanta has recorded an ugly .173/.227/.256 slash line in the last seven days and a .210/.273/.310 triple-slash in the last couple of weeks. Even the Braves’ pitching staff has struggled over the last seven days, notching up a 4.78 ERA, 1.50 WHIP, and a .272 batting average against in 43.1 innings of work.
Chris Sale will take the hill Wednesday and meet the Red Sox for the first time since he left Boston. The 35-year-old left-hander is 4-1 with a 3.44 ERA, 0.95 WHIP, and 42/7 K/BB ratio in six starts (36.2 innings pitched) in his first season with the Braves. Sale aims for his fourth straight win. He’s only allowed five earned runs on 13 hits and two walks over his previous three outings (19 IP).
Red Sox at Braves Wednesday, at 7:20 PM EST Clear It's expected to be 86° F with a 13% chance of rain and 9 MPH wind blowing out in Atlanta at 7:20 PM EST. Hourly Forecasts: Weather.com

Braves' Chris Sale faces familiar foe in Red Sox FLM
The Atlanta Braves will send left-hander Chris Sale to the mound to face his former team on Wednesday in the finale of a two-game series against the visiting Boston Red Sox.
Sale (4-1, 3.44 ERA) will be opposed by Boston right-hander Nick Pivetta (1-1, 0.82), who will be activated from the injured list to make his first start since April 3.
Atlanta won the series opener 4-2 following a two-run rally in the eighth inning on Tuesday. The victory ended the Braves' three-game losing streak and handed the Red Sox their fourth loss in five games.
Sale will be facing the Red Sox for the first time since being acquired by the Braves in an offseason trade that sent second baseman Vaughn Grissom to Boston. Sale played for the Red Sox from 2017-23, going 46-30 with a 3.27 ERA in 115 starts.
"I had great experiences with everyone there," Sale said. "I have a lot of love and respect for everyone over there. They were in my corner when I needed them most. I'll always appreciate that and I'll never take it for granted."
Sale pitched five solid innings last Wednesday at Seattle, allowing one run on six hits while recording a season-high nine strikeouts. He earned Atlanta's only win on its six-game road trip.
Sale is 2-1 with a 2.29 ERA in 10 career games (five starts) against the Red Sox.
Pivetta will be activated from the injured list after being out with a right elbow flexor strain. He made a rehab start Triple-A Worcester on Thursday and allowed four runs on three hits and four walks, with five strikeouts in three innings.
"He's good, he threw the ball well," Boston manager Alex Cora said. "Struggled early with command or the strike zone, whatever it was. Very happy with the way he competed. Velo was good and everything is trending in the right direction."
Pivetta was pitching well before the injury. He had 13 strikeouts and one walk over 11 innings.
He has 19 career appearances (15 starts) against Atlanta, going 7-4 with a 5.04 ERA. He was 1-1 with a 7.90 ERA against the Braves in 2023, making one start and entering the second game in the second inning after the Red Sox used John Schreiber as an opener.
The Atlanta bullpen took another hit on Tuesday when left-hander Tyler Matzek was placed on the injured list with left elbow inflammation. Last week the Braves placed right-handed setup man Pierce Johnson on the injured list with inflammation in his pitching elbow.
Matzek is trying to return from Tommy John surgery in 2022 and has a 9.90 ERA, allowing 11 runs in 10 innings over 11 relief appearances. Matzek was replaced by left-hander Ray Kerr, who went 0-1 with a 4.50 ERA in nine appearances for Triple-A Gwinnett.
"I think that's the biggest thing, just get (Matzek) calmed down and get him back right," Atlanta manager Brian Snitker said.
The Braves will take Thursday off before going to New York for a three-game weekend series against the Mets. The Red Sox, 1-3 on their road trip, are off Thursday and return home for a three-game set versus the Washington Nationals.

Ian Browne @ianmbrowne Given the many injuries the Red Sox have, Alex Cora is leaning toward hitting Raffy in the cleanup hole for the foreseeable future. Cora today: "Split up the lefties, that’s something that you guys are going to see. I think as far as maneuvering the game and all that, probably, for now, I’m going to split Raffy and Jarren. Against righties, Abreu is probably going to hit second, Raffy is going to hit fourth the whole time. I’ll talk to him, I think that’s what I’m leaning to.
