Free-Falling Sox
The Red Sox have hit the skids over the past week and their most recent slump began with last week's four-game home set against the Tampa Bay Rays. The Red Sox lost three of four to the Rays to close out their homestand and followed that up by losing two of three games to the Cardinals in St. Louis. The Red Sox won their second straight in the opener led by seven shutout innings from starter Tanner Houck and Rafael Devers' home run, breaking a Red Sox team record by homering in his sixth consecutive game. On Tuesday night, the Red Sox ensured a series win at the Trop for the first time since 2019 with a 5-2 win. Jarren Duran homered and also stole home to lead the Sox to the win.
The Red Sox will send young right-hander Brayan Bello to the hill in the series finale against the Rays on Wednesday night. Bello is 4-2 in seven starts this season with just one quality start thus far. Bello has an ERA of 3.96 this season and a WHIP of 1.13. Bello has allowed 32 hits in 36.1 innings pitched including eight home runs. Bello has walked nine batters and struck out 31 in his seven starts. Bello is 2-1 in four road starts this season with an ERA of 4.79. He has allowed 18 hits in 20.2 innings pitched and given up six home runs in those four starts. The Red Sox have gone 3-2 in Bello's last five starts.

Rays Ramping Things Up
The Tampa Bay Rays have worked their way out of last place in the AL East and have climbed up the standings after a strong stretch over the last seven games before this series. The Rays have won each of their last two series, both against teams that were briefly ahead of them in the standings. They won three of four games at Fenway over the Red Sox last week and followed that up by taking two of three games over the Blue Jays in Toronto. In games one, Rays starter struck out eight of the first nine batters but then lost his way in a 5-0 loss to the BoSox. In game two, the Rays offense was stalled once again in a 5-2 loss to the Sox. They briefly led 2-0 before the Red Sox offense got heated up.
The Rays will close the series with Boston by sending righty Rya Pepiot to the hill. Pepiot returns from a stint on the IL and heads to the hill without taking a minor league rehab assignment. On the season, Pepoit is 3-2 in seven starts with an ERA of 3.68 and a WHIP of 0.93. Pepiot has allowed 23 hits in 36.2 innings pitched while walking 11 and striking out 41 batters and had four quality starts this season. At home this season, Pepiot is 1-2 in five starts including two quality starts. He has an ERA of 5.47 at home this year and has allowed 18 hits in 24.2 innings of work. The Rays have won three of Pepiot's last five starts overall.
Key Injuries: RP Chris Devenski, RP Colin Poche, 2B Brandon Lowe, SP Shane Baz, and 3B Taylor Walls are out.
