White Sox snap long losing streak at Red Sox’ expense

CHICAGO — Someone had to be the opponent when the Chicago White Sox snapped their long losing streak. Turns out that someone was the Red Sox.
Boston mustered just six hits while striking out 14 times, and lost to the White Sox, 7-2, as Chicago snapped their franchise-record 14-game losing streak.
Cooper Criswell was saddled with the loss, allowing four runs — three earned — in 4.1 innings. The Red Sox have won just once in his last seven starts, but he was hardly solely responsible for this ignominious defeat.
Trailing 4-2 in the bottom of the sixth, the Red Sox fell far behind due to the long ball. Reliever Greg Weissert, who had taken over the inning before for Criswell, allowed two homers in the span of three pitches — the first to Gavin Sheets and the second to Andrew Vaughn, as the White Sox established a four-run lead. The homer to Vaughn was the first allowed by Weissert to a righthand hitter this season.
The home team posted an insurance run in the eighth on a run-scoring double by Paul DuJong.
The White Sox had taken control for good in the fourth, as the Red Sox were guilty of some sloppy play.
A one-out walk and an infield single gave the White Sox two on when DuJong lined a single to left. That scored Sheets easily from second, but when Jarren Duran’s throw back to the infield missed the cutoff man and landed between first and home, moving Vaughn to third and allowing DuJong to take second.
That proved costly when Oscar Colas drove a single to center, scoring two more runs.
The Red Sox took the lead in the third in a bizarre inning. Bobby Dalbec started things by drawing a leadoff walk. One out later, Jarren Duran hit a comebacker to first, but Crochet’s throw to first was wild, enabling Dalbec to score all the way from first and Duran took third on a three-base throwing error.
Then, things got stranger. With Duran on third, the White Sox were of the belief that Duran missed first base on his tour of the bases, and Crochet threw over to first on appeal. But as he did, Duran broke for the plate and successfully stole home.
Desperate to end their futility streak, the White Sox had jumped out to a 1-0 lead in the bottom of the first when Luis Robert Jr. took Criswell deep for a solo homer.
Matinee on tap for third game of series
The Red Sox and White Sox will meet again Saturday at 4:05 EST, with Brayan Bello (6-2, 4.36) matched up against righthander Nick Nastrini (0-5, 9.74). The series then concludes on Sunday before the Red Sox return home for an off-day on the schedule Monday.

RED SOX NOTEBOOK Red Sox’ Kutter Crawford feeling stronger, will start Tuesday vs. Phillies By Julian McWilliams Globe Staff,Updated June 7, 2024, 10:06 p.m.
CHICAGO — Kutter Crawford spent much of Friday afternoon at Guaranteed Rate Field going through his long toss routine, stretching out from the right-field line to the warning track in center field. Upon completion, Crawford hurled the ball over the right-field wall and it ricocheted off a jumbotron.
Maybe that was a sign Crawford feels strong. He was supposed to start Sunday, but instead he will go Tuesday against the Phillies.
Crawford certainly feels as though he’s in a good space.
“The body feels pretty good,” said Crawford. “Obviously, there have been times where I stepped up and pitched on the fifth day versus having the extra day off in between. But, overall, I feel pretty happy about where my body and my shoulder is. I think the big thing is just maintaining the lower half but the shoulder feels pretty good.”
Crawford has hit a rough patch, compiling a 5.82 ERA in his last six starts compared with a 1.56 ERA in his first seven.
However, Crawford spent much of the offseason working on his lower half to remain durable and pitch deep into games. That has paid off, in some aspect, with the Sox starter tossing at least five innings in all but two of his starts. Pitching deep into the summer, every five days, is Crawford’s next hurdle, one he is certain he can leap.
“It’s probably one of the more important things,” said Crawford. “You have to have your lower half. It’s got to be strong. It’s got to be stable. It’s got to be mobile. If your lower half is not moving, then you put more stress on your arm. And that was a big focus. I had to learn about how my lower half moves and what I have to do to help out, to help maintain feeling good, mobile, and strong. So far, so good. We’re accomplishing that.”
Crawford yielded five runs in his June 4 start against the Braves, an 8-3 loss. He was just two outs away from getting out of the sixth with just two runs charged to his tab. However, Ozzie Albies tattooed a fastball that came in at just 91 miles per hour, proving the slim margin of error between a good and a bad start, particularly against a stellar team. It won’t get any easier against the Phillies, one of the best teams in baseball this year. Crawford wouldn’t want it any other way.
“Whenever you’re competing against some of the better teams in the league, it’s always a test to kind of see where you’re at, where your stuff’s at,” said Crawford. “Obviously, the last outing I gave up the big three-run homer. But I feel like it’s just been one pitch. I felt pretty good with my fastball, my cutter, my sweeper. The pitches felt better and sharper. I’m excited to compete against the Phillies.” Yoshida progressing
Masataka Yoshida (thumb sprain) will begin a rehab assignment Saturday at Triple A Worcester.
Manager Alex Cora is uncertain how many games Yoshida will need before he is ready to return to the parent club but is excited to get him back in the lineup soon.
“The at-bat is going to help us out,” said Cora. “I felt good about the lineup Thursday. Splitting up the lefties. [Connor Wong] hitting seventh. Then we’ll make a decision on what we do. Whether we hit him second or hit him fourth and have [Rafael Devers] hit second. We’ll get there when we get there.”
Yoshida will wear a special thumb guard. He likely will have to manage the injury for the remainder of the season. The offensive load won’t be on Yoshida, noted Cora, considering the offense has been better as of late.
“We do believe that we’re deeper,” said Cora. “We got some guys stepping up or playing good baseball. We’ll make sure we mix and match some and help everybody out to stay healthy. I know [Yoshida] is going to contribute.”
Romy Gonzalez (hamstring) likely will begin a rehab assignment Tuesday for Worcester. Vaughn Grissom (hamstring) is progressing but has yet to ramp up baseball activities.

White Sox face Red Sox, seek 1st win streak since mid-May FLM
The Chicago White Sox ended the worst single-season losing streak in franchise history, a 14-game skid, with a 7-2 home victory against the Boston Red Sox on Friday.
Now to exhale and move on.
"It's just a really good feeling to break a streak that seems to be the hot topic," White Sox manager Pedro Grifol said. "Let's start something new."
Chicago will aim to build on its momentum on Saturday in the third game of a four-game series against the Red Sox.
The White Sox recovered from a 14-2 drubbing in the Thursday series opener to defeat Boston, benefiting from six strong innings from left-hander Garrett Crochet and solo home runs from Luis Robert Jr., Gavin Sheets and Andrew Vaughn.
Paul DeJong (two RBIs) and Vaughn contributed two hits apiece for the White Sox, who earned their first win since a 5-0 road shutout of the Toronto Blue Jays on May 21.
"I'm really proud of these guys," Grifol said. "This has been a hard couple of weeks."
Boston has lost three of five to slip to .500. The Red Sox took a 2-1 lead in the third inning, a rally that included Jarren Duran's second steal of home this season, but were unable to maintain the edge as Crochet and reliever Jonathan Cannon settled in.
Rookie right-hander Nick Nastrini (0-5, 9.74 ERA) will try to pitch the White Sox to consecutive victories for the first time since May 14-15 against the Washington Nationals.
To do so, he will need to rebound from a rough outing at Milwaukee on Sunday, when he allowed four runs and three hits in four innings.
After striking out eight in his first eight major league innings, Nastrini has fanned just six batters in 12 1/3 innings over his past three starts. He will face the Red Sox for the first time in his career.
Boston will counter with righty Brayan Bello (6-2, 4.36 ERA), who pitched a season-high 6 1/3 innings against the Detroit Tigers in a no-decision on Sunday. He allowed four runs and eight hits with three walks and five strikeouts.
Bello is 1-0 with a 1.35 ERA in one previous start against Chicago. He gave up one run and six hits in 6 2/3 innings to defeat the host White Sox on June 23, 2023.
Red Sox third baseman Rafael Devers singled in the fourth inning on Friday to extend his on-base streak to 13 games.
The status of Boston right fielder Tyler O'Neill, who left the game in the third inning due to right knee discomfort, wasn't immediately clear. Manager Alex Cora said the team has to be "very careful" as it evaluates O'Neill's injury history and whether to make a roster move before the Saturday game.
The Red Sox activated O'Neill from the 10-day disabled list on Wednesday after he was out because of right knee inflammation.
"I'm really hoping it's just a couple days here," O'Neill said. "Avoiding the (injured list) is definitely on the table. It's something we're going to be shooting for. So, I don't know what the next steps are going to look like but just want to get it cleaned up as soon as possible. It's not fun playing in pain."

It was bound to happen. As our old friend Zac used to say, the law of averages was on their side. Sadly, I didn't have a good feeling about our offense going into that game. My hope was that we'd be able to score off of their bullpen, but that was not the case. On a side note, the WS announcer said that the over/under on how many strikeouts Crochet would have was 6.5, and that he took the under. I thought to myself, bad move. LOL I do feel good about the next two games. I am confident we will win both. Don't let me down Red Sox. Another side note, the WS announcers are so much more bearable without Hawk.

Sheets hits grand slam as the White Sox beat the Red Sox 6-1 for 2nd straight win AP
CHICAGO (AP) Gavin Sheets hit his first career grand slam, and the Chicago White Sox won their second straight after a franchise-record 14-game losing streak, beating the Boston Red Sox 6-1 on Saturday.
Sheets capped a five-run fifth with his seventh homer of the season, a 399-foot drive to right off Brayan Bello that gave Chicago a 5-1 lead.
Paul DeJong added a solo drive in the seventh against Chase Anderson, and the White Sox earned consecutive wins for the first time since beating Washington on May 14 and 15. Chicago is a major league-worst 17-48.
“We're a strong clubhouse, it's been like this since spring training,” Sheets said. “There's two ways we could have gone with this. We could have broken during that streak or pulled together. Everybody in here is going through it together. We all support each other. Just a really close group.”
Boston’s Bobby Dalbec homered leading off the fifth. But manager Alex Cora got ejected by plate umpire Alan Porter after pinch-hitter Jamie Westbrook struck out looking at a pitch in the lower part of the zone for the third out of the inning.
Cora kicked dirt on the plate before heading off the field after being thrown out for the first time this season and 14th in six years leading the Red Sox. He said he reviewed the pitch later and agreed that it was, in fact, a strike.
Chicago's Nick Nastrini surrendered two hits in 4 1/3 innings. The right-hander struck out five and walked five after becoming the fifth pitcher in franchise history to lose each of his first five major league starts.
Tanner Banks (1-2) recorded five outs. He came in with runners on the corners in the fifth and immediately picked Jarren Duran off first before striking out Westbrook.
“I've always had that in my back pocket,” Banks said. “Not to give away any secrets, but if I see a guy that's too far off the bag, it's a little quicker than a leg lift and a throw, so if I can steal an out however I can, I'll take it.”
Michael Kopech pitched out of a bases-loaded jam in the ninth, striking out Ceddanne Rafaela and Jarren Duran, as the White Sox won for the third time in 21 games.
Bello (6-3) allowed nine hits and walked three in 4 2/3 innings.
The Red Sox were 1 for 11 with runners in scoring position, and they've been outscored a combined 13-3 the past two games.
“Weird game,” Cora said. “We walk, we put pressure on them, the pickoff didn't help. I was very aggressive with pinch-hitting there. I felt that it was going to be a grinder and then Banks with that pickoff, putting it at two outs. And then Westy - I looked at the pitcher later. And my bad, it was actually a strike.”
The White Sox sent 11 batters to the plate in the fifth and had seven in a row reach with two out, with Sheets delivering the big blow right after Andrew Vaughn drove in a run with an infield single.
“It’s exciting,” Sheets said. “It was fun. We fed off the energy of the fans today, had a good crowd. It was a big moment, so that was fun.”
TRAINER'S ROOM
Red Sox: 3B Rafael Devers was lifted for a pinch-hitter in the eighth because his ailing left knee was bothering him. Cora said he probably won't play Sunday. “Nothing serious, but when he expressed that, we have to be smart about it,” he said. ... OF Tyler O’Neill (right knee) is going to rest for a couple days before the Red Sox decide on a possible return to the injured list. Cora said the team hopes to have him back in the lineup Tuesday against Philadelphia. ... DH/OF Masataka Yoshida (strained left thumb), on the IL since late April, began a rehab assignment with Triple-A Worcester on Saturday.
White Sox: OFs Tommy Pham (left ankle sprain) and OF Andrew Benintendi (left Achilles tendinitis) will likely get some at-bats at the team's complex in Arizona before they are eligible to come off the injured list, manager Pedro Grifol said.
UP NEXT
The White Sox send RHP Chris Flexen (2-2, 5.12 ERA) to the mound. The Red Sox had not announced a starter.

Red Sox Notes: Devers, O’Neill, Yoshida
By Nick Deeds | June 8, 2024 at 8:48pm CDT
Red Sox third baseman Rafael Devers exited the club’s loss to the White Sox earlier today due to left knee soreness, though manager Alex Cora told reporters (including Tom Caron of NESN) following the game that the club is hopeful that the issue isn’t more serious than that. Caron also relayed comments from Devers himself about the issue. The 27-year-old noted that he would not be in the lineup for tomorrow’s series finale against Chicago but that he hoped to be back in the lineup for the start of the club’s series against the Phillies in Boston on Tuesday.
The news is yet another blow to a club that has dealt with injury woes up and down the lineup all season. Devers has generally been the one consistent offensive presence that the Red Sox have been able to rely on this year. Only Ceddanne Rafaela and Jarren Duran have appeared in more games for Boston than Devers this season, and the star third baseman has dominated to the tune of a .286/.376/.563 slash line. That’s good for a 155 wRC+, the seventh highest figure in the AL and fourth among all MLB infielders.
While the Red Sox appear to be optimistic that they’ll only be without that production for a game or two, it’s worth noting that this isn’t the first time Devers’s knee has given him trouble this season. Cora told reporters (including those at the Associated Press) back in April that Devers had undergone an MRI on his left knee and was dealing with a bone bruise. The issue did not require a trip to the injured list but did force Devers to miss five games back in April, and if the injury proves to have worsened it wouldn’t be a shock to see Devers wind up on the IL now that it has flared up again.
With Devers now day-to-day, he finds himself in a similar position as outfielder Tyler O’Neill. O’Neill wasn’t in today’s lineup as he nurses an injured right knee that has caused him to play just three games since May 25. He was briefly placed on the 10-day injured list late last month but was activated early this week only to tweak his knee during yesterday’s loss to the White Sox. Fortunately, the AP notes that Cora told reporters today that the club hopes to avoid sending O’Neill back to the injured list due to the issue and, much like Devers, the hope is he can return to the club’s lineup on Tuesday against Philadelphia.
While O’Neill hasn’t been the offensive juggernaut that Devers has proven to be this season, he’s nonetheless been a key part of the Red Sox offense since arriving in a trade with the Cardinals over the winter. In 44 games with the club this year, the outfielder has slashed .250/.354/.500 with a 133 wRC+ and 11 homers in just 181 trips to the plate. That power production from the right side has been particularly valuable for the Red Sox as they’ve otherwise relied on lefty hitters such as Devers and Wilyer Abreu for their power production this season.
It’s unclear who would replace Devers in the lineup if he were to require a trip to the injured list, as injuries to Vaughn Grissom, Triston Casas, and Trevor Story have severely limited the club’s options around the infield. With David Hamilton handling shortstop duties and Jamie Westbrook splitting time alongside Enmanuel Valdez at the keystone, the club could be left to turn to Bobby Dalbec at the hot corner in the event of an injury to Devers, though they could also utilize Westbrook at third base and move catcher Connor Wong to second as they did to end the game this evening.
Figuring out how the club could handle the loss of O’Neill isn’t nearly as tricky, as the Worcester Red Sox announced this afternoon that outfielder and DH Masataka Yoshida has begun a rehab assignment with them. According to MLB.com’s Injury Tracker, the club hopes that Yoshida will be able to rejoin the Red Sox at some point during this coming week. In the event that O’Neill were to require a return to the injured list, Yoshida could seamlessly replace O’Neill in the club’s outfield/DH mix, taking back his role as the regular DH while Duran, Rafaela, and Rob Refsnyder handle the outfield.
Signed out of Japan to a five-year deal prior to the 2023 season, Yoshida has slashed .287/.339/.438 with a 109 wRC+ since his major league career began but appeared in just 24 games before being shelved due to a thumb sprain at the end of April. The 30-year-old seemed to be heating up in his final 48 trips to the plate before hitting the shelf as he slashed a solid .318/.375/.477 across 13 games. If he were to maintain a slash line in that range upon his return to action, that would surely provide the Red Sox with a major boost as they look to rebound from a skid that has left them with a 32-33 record and 1.5 games out of the final AL Wild Card spot.

Bello has 'frustrating' start after big 5th inning June 8th, 2024 Tim Stebbins
Tim Stebbins @tim_stebbins ;
2 seconds remaining
CHICAGO -- Brayan Bello watched the fly ball off of Gavin Sheets’ bat carry to deep right field. As the drive cleared the fence, Bello slammed his glove on to the mound in a moment of frustration.
Sheets’ go-ahead grand slam punctuated a frustrating fifth inning for Bello and the Red Sox, in Saturday’s 6-1 loss to the White Sox at Guaranteed Rate Field.
“This is definitely probably one of my more frustrating starts [in the Majors],” said Bello, who appeared to be taking the outing hard postgame, through an interpreter. “A lot of difficult things have happened. But it’s the big leagues, and you gotta move on.”
Bello got off to a strong start this season, carrying a 3.04 ERA through his first five outings. He went on the 15-day injured list on April 24 due to right lat tightness and returned on May 12. In six starts since, Bello has a 6.25 ERA in 31 2/3 innings.
“I really liked the way I started the season,” Bello said. “I felt like all my pitches were in a good place. I was executing well. But after that IL stint, things haven't been going the way that I want them to. I've had a lot of highs and lows.”
Red Sox manager Alex Cora noted pregame Saturday that Bello had one bad inning in two of his previous three starts. On May 22 against the Rays, he allowed three runs in six innings. They all came across in the second. On May 28 against the Orioles, he allowed three runs in five-plus innings. Those three came across in the first.
Bello allowed five runs on nine hits and three walks on Saturday, with just two strikeouts.
“In this one, the stuff wasn't as great,” Cora said postgame. “Velo was a little bit down, command was off. Just go back to the drawing board, help him through this and be ready for the next one.”
Bello was cruising early on Saturday, needing just 59 pitches to complete four scoreless innings. Even after he surrendered a one-out double to Danny Mendick in the fifth, the 25-year-old responded by getting Martín Maldonado to fly out to center fielder Ceddanne Rafaela.
That turned the lineup over to leadoff man Corey Julks. After getting ahead 0-1, Bello threw four straight balls to Julks: two sinkers and two sliders, all off the outer half of the plate, putting Julks on first. Bello then walked Zach DeLoach in a six-pitch sequence.
“I just didn't attack them how I should have,” Bello said.
Andrew Vaughn reached on an RBI infield single following the consecutive free passes, on a grounder Jamie Westbrook knocked down diving behind second base. It set the table for Sheets, who took a slider on the outside corner for strike one and then connected on an 88.1 mph changeup over the plate for the grand slam.
Bello has thrown his changeup second-most frequently the past two seasons, behind only his sinker. In 2023, opponents had a .196 average, .291 slugging percentage and 38.7 percent whiff rate against it.
This season, entering Saturday, opponents have hit .127 with a .310 slugging percentage and 35 percent whiff rate against his changeup.
“It’s definitely one of my better pitches,” Bello said. “It's one that I'm always working on, incorporating into the outing. It hasn't been working lately off of sliders that I have thrown. But I'm gonna keep working on it, because I need that pitch.”
Cora called Bello’s glove-slam “out of character” for the right-hander, but noted it came in the heat of the moment. The Red Sox manager equated it to a managerial ejection; Cora was tossed after Westbrook was called out on strikes on a borderline pitch to end the top of the fifth. (Cora acknowledged he was wrong and it was a strike, after he saw a replay.)
As much as the fifth inning got away from Boston, the Red Sox also finished 1-for-11 with runners in scoring position on Saturday. And for Bello, his next start offers a clean slate to get back on track.
“As I always say, man, it's a work in progress,” Cora said. “This kid has electric stuff, but he's still learning at the big league level. And the more he pitches, the better he's going to be. We’ve just got to help him.
“My expectation out of him is to go out there every five days and give us a chance to win. He did that the last three [starts]. Tonight, he didn't do it. Be ready for the next one.”

Injuries & Moves: Devers (left knee) exits game early June 8th, 2024
MLB.com LATEST NEWS
June 8: 3B Rafael Devers (left knee) exits in 8th inning Reese McGuire pinch-hit for Devers in the eighth inning of Saturday's eventual 6-1 loss to the Red Sox. According to manager Alex Cora, Devers' left knee, which he pushes off of while hitting, was bothering him when he was loading (or getting ready to swing) in the batter's box.
"Probably will give him tomorrow off," Cora said. "Nothing [serious], but obviously, when he expressed that, then we have to be smart about it."
Devers dealt with a bone bruise in his left knee in April. He did not go on the injured list, but missed five consecutive games. He said the issue on Saturday is not as serious as what he experienced last month.
"Not at all," Devers said through an interpreter. "That's why I asked for them to take me out of the game, out of precaution, just because I don't want to have it get to that point."
June 8: OF Tyler O'Neill (right knee) out of lineup after early exit on Friday The Red Sox will look to stay away from O’Neill on Saturday and Sunday against the White Sox before Monday’s off-day, with hopes he can avoid a stint on the injured list. O'Neill walked off the field gingerly with one out in the bottom of the third inning in Friday's eventual 7-2 loss to the White Sox, accompanied by manager Alex Cora and a trainer.
The 28-year-old felt discomfort in his knee catching a Paul DeJong fly ball in the second inning. Cora said O’Neill was feeling better on Saturday.
“If we can take advantage of the next three days and avoid the IL, that's what we're going to do,” Cora said on Saturday. “Just yesterday, he didn't feel great moving around. I think we made the decision soon enough to avoid something worse.”
O'Neill was activated off the 10-day injured list on Wednesday after missing nine games with right knee inflammation. He was hopeful this flare-up will not require another IL stint.
“I still don’t think the diagnosis has changed,” O’Neill said Friday. “Nothing structural or any worry about that. Just a bit of a flare-up. Hopefully give it some time, let it calm down a little bit. Really hoping it’s just a couple of days.”
• All Red Sox transactions 10-DAY/15-DAY INJURED LIST
DH Masataka Yoshida (left thumb strain) Expected return: June Yoshida was set to DH for Triple-A Worcester on June 8 and 9 as he begins a Minor League rehab assignment, according to manager Alex Cora. Cora indicated that the hope is Yoshida will be able to rejoin the Red Sox at some point the week of June 10. Yoshida had been taking live batting practice in the days prior, and on June 6, hit off a Trajekt machine. Yoshida has been on the injured list since April 29. (Last updated: June 8)
