Red Sox @ Braves Saturday, 26th September 7pm @ Truist Field
Tanner Houck 2-0/ 0.00
So far has lived up to all the hype in his first 2 starts and carried a no no into the 6th vs the Yankees.
Tucker Davidson (MLB Debut)
Had a 2.15 era in 25 starts in AA ball and AAA in 2019. The leftie was drafted in the 19th round in 2016 and has ridden a 3 pitch mix into the big leagues.
MVP candidate Freeman leads Braves against Red Sox FLM
Atlanta Braves standout Freddie Freeman might be in the favorite's role for National League MVP after his latest show-stopping exploits.
Freeman and the Braves host the Boston Red Sox on Saturday in their next-to-last game of the regular season, one night after Freeman delivered a two-run walk-off blast in the 11th inning to give Atlanta a dramatic 8-7 victory.
The victory clinched the No. 2 seed for Atlanta in the National League playoffs, and it also provided a signature moment for Freeman's MVP candidacy. He is batting .341 with 13 homers and 53 RBIs for the Braves (35-23)
"I said last week that he absolutely should (win it)," Atlanta manager Brian Snitker said after Saturday's wild contest. "The guy is having an unbelievable year.
"You talk about MVPs and what a guy means to your team, and we're a first-place team. He checks all the boxes."
Freeman certainly enjoyed his fifth career walk-off blast, and the occasion made him reflect back on the entire season.
The 31-year-old contracted the coronavirus in early July and his temperature skyrocketed to 104.5 on July 3. His body was so hot and he was so fearful that he prayed and he had a request: "Please don't take me."
Two weeks later, he was recovered and reported to the Braves. Then his concern was that the season was one week away and he hadn't faced any live pitching since March.
Seems that should have been the least of his concerns based on his performance.
"I'm feeling pretty good. It's been an up-and-down year, I can tell you that," Freeman said during a postgame television interview. "It's been an absolute grind.
"It just makes you appreciate everything that you do and all the work that goes into this. Having just five days of practice and trying to hit big league pitching, obviously it took me a couple weeks to get my legs under me. But it feels like it has been 162 games, I can tell you that.
"It's been fun and when you clinch the division and now we have clinched the No. 2 seed with this win, it's big."
Freeman's decisive 415-foot homer was the biggest hit on Friday, but it wasn't the longest. Teammate Ronald Acuna Jr. hit a 495-foot blast that is the longest in the majors this season.
Friday's contest was a back-and-forth affair where the two teams combined for 12 of the game's 15 runs over the final 4 innings.
Boston (22-36) took leads in both the 10th and 11th innings but wasn't able to hold them.
"Tough loss," Red Sox manager Ron Roenicke said. "I'm really happy with the offense. They battled great. We get behind, they came back and kept doing it. So offensively, I thought we did a great job.
"We just didn't pitch as well in the late innings once we got the lead. It's a shame to lose a game like this to a really good team. When you battle that well offensively, you hope to win that."
Boston is limping to the finish line of a highly disappointing campaign, and one of the players feeling the most regret is J.D. Martinez.
The season has been a disaster for the slugger, who bashed 79 homers over the previous two seasons. He has just six this season, along with 25 RBI and a .218 average.
"I've (stunk). I haven't been very good," Martinez said. "I feel like I'm not in the boat alone. I feel like there's a lot of really, really good players and a lot of really, really good talent out there that have had the same season, if not worse than me.
"I think it's just a very weird year. You're expected to perform at elite levels when there's an entire epidemic going on in the world. It's not really an excuse, but it's tough. It's a lot to ask."
Right-hander Tanner Houck (2-0, 0.00 ERA) will make his third career start for Boston. The 24-year-old has allowed one unearned run and three hits over 11 innings.
Left-hander Tucker Davidson will make his major league debut for Atlanta. He has a 20-24 minor league record and 2.86 ERA since being a 19th-round draft pick in 2016.

Boston Red Sox vs. Atlanta Braves Saturday, September 26, 2020 at 7:10pm EDT Written by Nick Raffoul
The Boston Red Sox will try to close out the season strong on the road at SunTrust Park against the Atlanta Braves on Saturday.
The Braves put together a comeback for the ages on Saturday, taking down the Red Sox 8-7 in extra innings behind a pinch-hit home run from first baseman Freddie Freeman. The 11th-inning homer came after the Braves came back from down 6-4 in the bottom of the 10th inning. Atlanta has now won five of its last six games to lock up the top spot in the National League East race.
Can the Braves stay hot and close out the season strong with a win at home over the Red Sox on Saturday evening?
Houck brings 0.00 ERA into third MLB start The Red Sox will send rookie right-hander Tanner Houck to the hill for his final start of the 2020 season. Houck has lived up to the hype in his first cup of coffee at the Major League level, posting 11 consecutive scoreless innings to start his career. He took a no-hitter into the sixth inning of his last start but was after being tagged for an unearned run. Houck finished the game with six innings of one-run ball (zero earned) in a win over the New York Yankees.
The 24-year-old comes in with a 2-0 record to go along with a 0.00 ERA in two starts but will have his hands full against a balanced Braves’ lineup.
It’s hard to project how a rookie will perform at the Big League level. Houck has enjoyed terrific results despite posting peripherals on par with his unspectacular minor league career.
The Red Sox righty has struck out a batter per inning but he’s walking 4.91 batters per nine coming into Saturday’s start. He’s also enjoyed a fair bit of good luck to start his career, benefiting from a .136 BABIP through his first 11 MLB innings.
Davidson to make MLB debut vs. Red Sox on Saturday Atlanta is expected to counter with left-hander Tucker Davidson in what could be an audition for a spot on the Braves’ postseason roster. The 24-year-old will be making his MLB debut late in the season despite having just one year of experience over High-A ball under his belt. Davidson was 7-6 with a 2.03 ERA in 21 Double-A starts and posted a 2.84 ERA in four starts following a promotion to Triple-A. According to Fangraphs, Davidson is the team’s No. 6 overall prospect and sports three plus-pitches in his arsenal. He uses his curveball and slider to play off of his fastball and keep hitters off-balance.
While stuff shouldn’t be an issue for the 24-year-old, commanding his arsenal can be a challenge at times. He walked more than 3.60 batters per nine innings in the minor leagues last season and his strikeout rate nearly disappeared once he got to the Triple-A level (5.68 K/9). Still, he should be able to hold his own in the Big Leagues after posting a combined 2.15 ERA with 134 K’s in 129 ⅔ total innings last season.
Davidson’s heater is among his best pitches. He can hit 96-97 mph on the radar gun with consistency and shows a willingness to test hitters up in the zone. He’s also shown the ability to add and subtract from his curveball, giving him two distinct pitches -- one that he can throw for strikes and another to get hitters to chase.
Boston
Red Sox are 17-41 in their last 58 vs. a team with a winning record. Red Sox are 7-17 in their last 24 games vs. a starter with a WHIP greater than 1.30. Red Sox are 2-5 in their last 7 during game 2 of a series
Atlanta
Braves are 13-3 in their last 16 interleague home games. Braves are 10-1 in their last 11 interleague home games vs. a right-handed starter. Braves are 7-1 in their last 8 interleague home games vs. a team with a losing record

Bill Koch @billkoch25 · 7h Rafael Devers caught on @nesn cameras livid with himself after misplaying a grounder in the 8th.
Devers takes his defense seriously. Generally a really good-natured guy, but he has to be frustrated with that part of his game this season. #RedSox Devers needs Cora. I really believe that. He seems to me to be a player who responds well to a mentor/friend taking him under his wing. Bogaerts and JD, along with Cora, have filled that role in the past. JD is dealing with his own struggles this year. I'm not sensing as much of that role from Bogaerts this year either, probably due to social distancing.
I'm not saying that having Cora would eliminate the errors, but I think he would help Devers respond better to his struggles. There have been a couple of times this season where I've seen Devers really hanging his head and being down on himself. I also saw him not running hard down the line to avoid a double play ball.

Bill Koch @billkoch25 · 4h 'Boston either began the year a worse team than the Marlins, made less effective contingency plans than Miami or was inferior at identifying talent among the players it added along the way. All three scenarios should be alarming.' #RedSox Stop. Just stop.

Julian McWilliams @byjulianmack · 9h Acuña hit that ball 495 feet. Longest homer of the year. Wow. That was a rocket. But to be fair, Mazza pitched pretty well for 5 innings.

Despite the outcome, last night's game was an entertaining game to watch. It held my interest until the end, which is more than I can say for several other games the Sox have played this season.

as for the running thing....has happened a few times and last night...the Braves booth commented on it....Tom Glavine...and he not impressed.

Christopher Smith @smittyonmlb · 2h If the Red Sox win their final 2 games, they will finish w/ .400 winning percentage. If they go 1-1, they will finish w/ .383 winning percentage. If they go 0-2, they will finish w/ .367 winning percentage. Only 11 teams in franchise history have had a sub-.400 winning %

Mazza has been a bright point for me. As well as Weber. Everything this season qualifies as a SSS, but in the past 28 days, Mazza has a 4.44 ERA with 22/12 K/W in 24.1 IPs, and 2 HRs. Weber has a 2.65 with a 15/3 K/W and 2 HRs in 17 IPs. And their OPSa supports those numbers. I've complained forever about their inability to develop a 6-7-8 option, and maybe we are seeing this. I know that Roenicke mentioned Mazza as a #6/LR option for 2021. If one of the Boston writers were interested in writing something other than a hit piece, we've developed some possible nice depth pieces this year. It's actually a little bit sad, but Dalbec, Arroyo, Munoz, Houck, Pivetta, Mazza, and Springs are an interesting story, that no one is interested in writing about.
