Kiké Hernández late-inning homer not enough, Boston Red Sox lose Game 1 of doubleheader to White Sox; Tanner Houck takes loss Updated 3:25 PM; Today 3:17 PM
By Christopher Smith | csmith@masslive.com
BOSTON — The Red Sox have seven come-from-behind wins so far, but they couldn’t come back in seven innings of Game 1 of their doubleheader against the White Sox on Sunday.
Kiké Hernández homered to lead off the sixth and cut Boston’s deficit to one run. Alex Verdugo then singled with no outs. But J.D. Martinez grounded into a double play, ending the rally.
The White Sox won 3-2 here at Fenway Park. Bobby Dalbec struck out looking with a runner at first base in the seventh to end it.
Red Sox starter Tanner Houck went 4 ⅓ innings, allowing three runs, all earned, six hits and no walks while striking out two. He topped out at 97.6 mph and averaged 95.2 mph with his 20 four-seam fastballs, per Baseball Savant. He mixed in 23 sliders, 12 two-seam fastballs and three split-fingered fastballs.
Tim Anderson took Houck deep on the first pitch of the ballgame. Anderson connected on a 96.8 mph four-seam fastball and blasted it 382 feet to right field to give the White Sox a quick 1-0 lead.
Chicago went ahead 2-0 in the fourth on Yasmani Grandal’s two-out double off the Green Monster.
The Red Sox cut the deficit to 2-1 in the fourth.
J.D. Martinez singled with one out. Rafael Devers’ sharp single to left field with two outs put runners at the corners. Hunter Renfroe hit a 76.9 mph dribbler with some spin on it to third. Third baseman Yoan Moncada could not make a play with the barehand and Martinez scored.
But then Renfroe got picked off for the final out.
Yoan Moncada’s two-out single up the middle against reliever Josh Taylor made it 3-1. The previous hit — a single by Anderson — deflected off Houck. It likely would have been an inning-ending double play if Houck didn’t deflect it.
The second game is scheduled to start at 5:10 p.m. It also will be seven innings. Martín Pérez is scheduled to start for Boston. The White Sox have not yet named a starter.

'Before today's outing I would have never done that.' #RedSox
Houck -- 'Worcester is amazing. I'm still getting to learn the town. I'm really excited for when we can have fans there. The stadium looks great.'
'I'm excited for Opening Day there.' #RedSox #WooSox
Houck -- 'I look at it as a growing experience. Any time you get out there you can always learn from something.' #RedSox

Cora on doubleheaders -- 'The sense of urgency is a lot different than in a 9-inning game.' #RedSox It was an enjoyable game to watch, despite the loss. We could have used the other 2 innings. Another winnable game - it's good to know that we're not getting blown out in most of our losses.
Oh well, let's get 'em in Game 2.
