Boston Red Sox vs. Chicago White Sox preview: TV schedule, pitching probables, key stories (April 16-19) Updated 1:06 PM; Today 1:02 PM
By Christopher Smith | csmith@masslive.com
The Yellow Sox are back in Boston.
Well, the Red Sox will wear yellow this Patriots’ Day weekend when they host the White Sox for a four-game series at Fenway Park. The team will wear yellow marathon-inspired ‘Nike City Connect’ jerseys on Saturday and Sunday.
The Red Sox are coming off an impressive 6-1 road trip. They won all three games they played in Baltimore, then three of four games in Minnesota.
Boston has come from behind in six of its nine victories.
Rafael Devers is one the league’s hottest hitters. He left Boston for the road trip last week batting .105 (2-for-19) with a .190 on-base percentage, .105 slugging percentage, no extra-base hits and one RBI. He returns to Fenway slashing .255/.340/.596/.935 with five homers, one double and 13 RBIs. Boston Red Sox (9-4) vs. Chicago White Sox (6-7) · Fenway Park, Boston, Mass.

KNOW YOUR OPPONENT:
The White Sox are tied with the Atlanta Braves and New York Mets for the fourth-best World Series odds (+1200), per Bovada. Only the Los Angeles Dodgers (+350), New York Yankees (+650) and San Diego Padres (+750) have better odds.
Chicago has started 2021 slow (6-7 record). It just split a four-game series against the Cleveland Indians.
White Sox first baseman/DH Jose Abreu won the 2020 AL MVP. But he is just 9-for-49 (.184) with two homers and one double in 13 games. He leads the league in strikeouts (21).
Righty Lucas Giolito — who will start Sunday — entered 2021 on the favorites to win the AL Cy Young.
PITCHING PROBABLES:
Friday, 7:10 p.m. — RHP Nick Pivetta (2-0, 3.27) vs. TBD
Saturday, 4:05 p.m. — TBD vs. LHP Dallas Keuchel (0-0, 6.43)
Sunday, 1:10 p.m. — LHP Martín Pérez (0-0, 4.50) vs. RHP Lucas Giolito (1-0, 2.55)
Monday, 11:10 a.m. — RHP Nathan Eovaldi (2-1, 2.08) vs. LHP Carlos Rodón (2-0, 0.00)
THREE SOX TO WATCH:
1. J.D. Martinez
The DH began the season 17-for-36 (.472) with five homers, seven doubles, 16 RBIs and 10 runs in his first eight games. But he went 0-for-9 in Minnesota. A good sign though is he drew three walks.
2. Nick Pivetta
The righty has won both his starts and allowed four earned runs in 11 innings (3.27 ERA) in 2021. He has won all four of his starts for Boston dating back to last September, posting a 2.57 ERA (six runs, 21 innings). But he has 12 walks in 21 innings, including seven walks in 11 innings this season. That’s one area that needs to improve.
3. Christian Arroyo
Arroyo is playing well and has a chance to emerge as Boston’s starting second baseman. In his last six games (four starts) he is 7-for-15 (.467) with four doubles, three runs and one RBI. He has batted leadoff twice this season.
SERIES NOTES:
The Red Sox will face Carlos Rodón on Monday. The 28-year-old lefty threw a no-hitter against the Indians on Wednesday. It took him 114 pitches. He has won both his starts this season without allowing a run in 14 innings. Chicago non-tendered Rodón in December, then re-signed him in free agency. Welcome back Tony La Russa who served as a special assistant to former president of baseball operations Dave Dombrowski. The 76-year-old La Russa was a surprise hire by the White Sox. The Red Sox scored only five runs in their first three games. But they are tied with the Dodgers and Reds for the major league lead in runs (75) through 13 games. Boston is fourth in the majors in on-base percentage (.337) and slugging (.456). The Red Sox rank 11th in the majors in starter ERA (3.72) and seventh in reliever ERA (3.35). Yermin Mercedes, who just turned 28 in February, is an AL Rookie of the Year candidate. The Dominican Republic native is 20-for-42 (.476) with three homers, four doubles, six runs and 10 RBIs in 11 games. His 20 hits lead the league. The Nationals initially signed him as an amateur free agent in 2011 but released him two years later. He spent 2014 playing indy ball. Alex Verdugo is 13-for-37 (.351) with a .419 on-base percentage, .649 slugging percentage, two homers, five doubles, 11 RBIs and 11 runs in his past nine games after starting the season 0-for-11.

OMF @omfonweei · 16m Alex Cora on today's #RedSox-White Sox series opener:
"It looks bad out there. They are meeting right now. We should know in a half hour what's going to happen. I was playing with my kids in the snow this morning."

Chris Cotillo @chriscotillo · 11m Sounds like Red Sox and White Sox would play a doubleheader on Sunday if tonight's game is rained out (that announcement appears imminent, per Cora on WEEI). Red Sox would still need a spot starter (Houck) in that case.
Pivetta would pitch Saturday, Pérez in one of the two games Saturday, TBD (Houck) in the other and Eovaldi on Monday, I'm guessing.

Chris Cotillo @chriscotillo · 3m Red Sox-White Sox postponed. Doubleheader on Sunday.
Sunday will be a split doubleheader. Game 1 at 1:10. Game 2 at 5:10. Tickets for tonight are good for Game 2. And yes, both games will last seven innings.
Saturday's game on for 4:05.

Bill Koch @billkoch25 · 5m #RedSox-White Sox on Saturday is set for a 4:05 pm national telecast on FS1. Likely was a factor in Friday's game being moved to Sunday.
TV pays the bills. And they want 9 innings (or more) of programming and advertising.

Bill Koch @billkoch25 · 11m And now, with Sunday being a doubleheader, Tanner Houck could simply be added as the 27th man. There would be no need for a corresponding roster move.
Was always likely he would start a game this weekend. #RedSox had an opening on Saturday prior to the postponement.
