The Red Sox might have reeled in a few more believers Current Time 0:10 / Duration 18:42
By Rob Bradford 2 hours ago
In 2013, it really wasn't until the Red Sox' West Coast trip in August that people truly bought into that club as a postseason contender. Five years, it took a 17-2 start to convince the naysayers.
Wednesday night felt like one of those moments the bandwagon got a bit more crowded.
The Red Sox won again, so we can start there. They (along with the Dodgers) have the most wins in baseball after a 1-0 victory over the Mets at City Field.
But undoubtedly the biggest selling point for the Red Sox this time around was which pitcher they beat and how they did it. In other words, when Nick Pivetta outdoes Jacob deGrom, it isn't just your run-of-the-mlll day-before-the-NFL-Draft victory.
"We were joking, we have our own inside joke about power rankings, all that stuff," said Red Sox manager Alex Cora. "We treat it like college baseball. I told Xander before the game, we beat this guy, we might be No. 1 in the nation in the upcoming days. It's just silly stuff, but they know. They know where they're at, they know what they're doing, they knew who we were facing and it's a tough challenge. Last year they played against him and they put good at-bats. We did the same thing in '18. For how great he is, we were up to the challenge. We believe we have a good offense, and we've been facing good pitching since day one in spring training. This guy, he's amazing. The way he just flip flopped his plan halfway through it and started showing that changeup. But credit to our guys that they battled, and at the end, one run was enough."
The one lone run against deGrom wasn't a surprise. The pitcher's ERA stands at 0.51 after this latest six-inning, 10-strikeout showing. Face it, when Christian Vazquez drove in Xander Bogaerts in the second inning, that was perceived as the ultimate luxury item.
It was how the Red Sox managed to keep pace with deGrom that offered the most optimism.
Pivetta followed up his almost-no-hitter with another gem holding the Mets to just one hit over five innings. The pitcher is now officially viewed as a reason to believe in this team, with his ERA standing at 2.81.
There were a couple of other elements in this win that will lead to buy-in.
Garrett Whitlock continued his march toward Rookie of the Year consideration, going two more scoreless innings after taking over for Pivetta. He hasn't given up a single run in 13 1/3 innings, striking out 18 and walking just two.
And then there was the end of the bullpen. This is how it's supposed to work -- Adam Ottavino pitches a clean eighth inning, paving the way for Matt Barnes to strike out the side in the ninth.
It was the perfect winning formula on a night not many believed a win would be an option.
"We have a great bunch and we trust each other," Cora said. You go from Nick to Garrett to Adam against lefties, he got them out. Marwin (Gonzalez) with the great play, Christian behind the plate was amazing tonight, I mean he did an amazing job. And then Barnesy, the way he finished the game was great. This is a tight group. We've been saying it all along. We feel we have good baseball team, obviously we still have to get better, but it feels great to win these two games like that. There's something about close games and well-pitched games, I don't want to say they get us going, because we've been playing good baseball for a while, but it's a good feeling."

1-0, sweep the Mets in NY, doesn't get much better than that. And to win a pitcher's duel against deGrom.
My kind of game, but boy are those 1-0 games nerve wracking.

My kind of game, but boy are those 1-0 games nerve wracking.Nerve-wracking, but the fun part is, even had we lost 1-0, I'd have taken it as a moral victory.
