Tigers @ Red Sox Tuesday, May 4th 2021 7pm @ Fenway
TBD (likely opener) (Fulmer 1-1/3.86
Pivetta 3-0/ 2.81
Has been sharp in his last two starts giving up 2 runs and 2 hits over eleven innings. Is 2-0/ 2.29 in four starts at Fenway.
Red Sox try to get back on track vs. hapless Tigers
The Boston Red Sox look to rebound from their first losing series in a month when they host the slumping Detroit Tigers in the start of a three-game set Tuesday.
The Red Sox dropped three of four in Texas over the weekend -- their first series loss since getting swept by the Baltimore Orioles to open the season. The Rangers took each of the last two games, including a late-inning comeback victory Sunday.
The Tigers enter on a five-game losing streak. Detroit, with the worst record in baseball, has lost 10 of its last 11 games and been shut out three times in four days. That run was extended with a 2-0 loss to the New York Yankees on Sunday.
The three games in Boston will conclude a nine-game trip for Detroit. The Red Sox will return to the road after the series.
Right-hander Nick Pivetta (3-0, 2.81 ERA) is scheduled to start for the Red Sox after giving up just one hit in an impressive five-inning showing last time out against the New York Mets. The Tigers had yet to announce a starter as of Monday afternoon.
Boston embraced having Monday off after the way things went in Texas. Sunday's loss was particularly frustrating, as the team entered the eighth inning with a 3-2 lead. Adam Ottavino began the frame by walking the leadoff hitter and got two outs before the Rangers scored three runs for an eventual 5-3 victory.
"We're still a good team. Nothing has changed," manager Alex Cora said. "Like I told you guys when we started 0-3, we felt like we had a good team, and after we won all those games, we still have a good team.
"This is the first series we've lost since the first one. So we reset tomorrow, enjoy the family, and hopefully it's a sunny day in Boston. We can enjoy it and be ready for Tuesday."
The Boston offense has gone 6-for-24 with runners in scoring position during its two-game skid. Xander Bogaerts had three hits Sunday, including his fifth home run in his last 12 games.
Detroit's offensive woes are much more severe, with the team last in the American League in runs scored (79). Sunday's shutout loss carried extra disappointment after starter Jose Urena did his part by holding the Yankees to two runs on three hits over seven innings.
"He pitched well enough to win that game," skipper A.J. Hinch said. "It wasn't a wasted effort, because we need that effort all the time. It was a wasted opportunity."
Pivetta outpitched Mets ace Jacob deGrom by holding New York scoreless over five innings during his last outing. He matched a season high with seven strikeouts. Pivetta has given up two runs or less in four of his five starts.
The veteran has faced Detroit just once, holding the Tigers hitless over 3 2/3 innings of relief in 2019 while a member of the Philadelphia Phillies.

RED SOX NOTEBOOK Health has played critical role in hot Red Sox start By Alex Speier Globe Staff,Updated May 3, 2021, 7:35 p.m.
While a tumble in Texas brought the first-place Red Sox back toward the AL East pack, in at least one respect, the team continues to enjoy a runaway advantage.
One underappreciated aspect of the strong start is health. Outside of J.D. Martinez’s one day on the COVID-19 injury list, the team has had just three players on the IL since the start of this season: Chris Sale continues his rehab from his March 2020 Tommy John surgery, Ryan Brasier remains in Fort Myers to rehab his injured calf, and Eduardo Rodriguez missed one turn of the rotation due to dead arm at the start of the year.
Entering Monday, the Sox had lost 71 player days to the non-COVID injured list, fifth fewest in the majors.
Sale, of course, was never expected to be ready for the start of the season. Rodriguez missed one start. Only Brasier has required the team to reconfigure its roster for an extended period.
In that regard, the Red Sox are atypical. They and Cleveland are the only teams not to have an injury since Opening Day that required a placement on the injured list. The other AL East contenders, meanwhile, have been hammered by injuries, contributing to their stumbles out of the gate.
The Yankees have had seven players placed on the non-COVID injured list since the start of spring training, including surgeries on Zack Britton (shoulder) and Luke Voit (knee). The Rays have had 10 players land on the injured list since the start of spring training, including starter Chris Archer and relief ace Nick Anderson. Related: A closer look at the WooSox’ initial roster, and which prospects to keep an eye on
The Blue Jays, incredibly, have had 15. Key offseason addition George Springer (oblique/quad) just made his debut in the past week, ace Hyun Jin Ryu is sidelined with a glute strain, and closer Kirby Yates (Tommy John) was lost for the season before a single regular-season pitch.
While the Sox have had players miss a couple games at a time — Kiké Hernández after getting crumpled by a fence in Texas, Christian Arroyo after being hit on the hand by a pitch — the team has remained intact for most of the year, contributing to its first-place standing. Darwinzon Hernandez hones in
Darwinzon Hernandez represented a key part of the late-innings equation to start the year, but the lefthander faltered in the role. In eight games spanning seven innings through April 22, he had a 5.14 ERA, with more walks (8) than strikeouts (7). Opponents swung and missed at 11.3 percent of his pitches.
The 24-year-old then went a week without appearing in a big league game. Since his return on April 29, typically in lower-leverage spots, Hernandez has been overpowering. In his last three games, the lefty has faced 11 batters, allowing no runs on two hits while striking out eight and walking none. He’s thrown 78 percent of his pitches for strikes, with batters whiffing at 31.1 percent.
“During [the week between games] I continued to work on my mechanics and also try to control my emotions,” Hernandez said through translator Bryan Almonte. “We pitchers want to improve our control. That’s really what I have been focusing on, really making sure my body is right and not trying to do too much and not speed my delivery up.”
His performance while attacking the strike zone has been eye-opening.
“Filth,” said one evaluator.
Meanwhile, righthander Matt Barnes was named the AL Reliever of the Month for April. He went 1-0 with six saves, striking out 25 and walking three in 14 innings. He held opponents to a .106/.160/.191 line, dominating thanks to a more aggressive attack on the strike zone than at any other point in his career. Barnes threw 73 percent of his pitches for strikes in April, up from a 62 percent career strike rate entering 2021. Discomforts of home
The Sox hope to improve their 8-8 home record with a three-game series against the MLB-worst Tigers (8-21). But while the Sox have been mired in mediocrity at Fenway, they’re not alone in failing to claim a home-field advantage. The combined home record of the five AL East teams this year is 33-39, with the Yankees (7-7) .500 in the Bronx, and both the Rays (7-10) and Orioles (4-10) selfless hosts. Ironically, it is the migratory Jays who possess the greatest home advantage in the division, going 7-4 in their temporary residence of Dunedin, Fla. . . . The Red Sox claimed righthanded reliever Brandon Brennan off waivers from the Mariners and optioned him to Triple A Worcester. The 29-year-old features a low-90s fastball, changeup, and slider. His changeup has been a wipeout option against righties, who are 3-for-46 with 24 strikeouts against the offering since the start of 2019. He has 54 strikeouts and 29 walks, along with eight homers allowed en route to a 4.45 ERA in 54⅔ big league innings. To open a spot for Brennan on the 40-man roster, the Red Sox moved reliever Ryan Brasier (calf) to the 60-day injured list. Brasier recently started throwing off a mound in Fort Myers. (Sale, already on the 60-day, continues to move closer to that step.)

Red Sox vs. Tigers Series Preview
A look at this week’s three-game set in Boston. By Matt_Collins@MattRyCollins May 4, 2021, 10:30am EDT
SB Nation Blog
Bless You Boys The opponent in one sentence
The Tigers are finally getting some of their top prospects onto the major league roster as they seek the other end of this long rebuild, but they aren’t quite at the finish line just yet. Record
8-21 Head-to-head record
0-0 Trend
Down. The Tigers have been one of the worst teams in baseball for pretty much the entire season, but things have become particularly bleak of late. They come into this series against the Red Sox having lost each of their last five games, 10 of their last 11, and 15 of their last 17. Pitching Matchups
5/4: Nick Pivetta vs. Michael Fulmer, 7:10 PM ET
In a season that has been full of positive surprises for the Red Sox, particularly on their pitching staff, Pivetta has stood out among the pack. The righty’s career to this point has largely pointed to a guy who just cannot consistently put up results, but that very much has not been the case this year. Through his first five starts of the year he has pitched to an impressive 2.81 ERA with nearly a strikeout per inning. There are some cracks that could turn things sour very quickly though, particularly with his control. He’s been able to sneak by with six walks per nine innings to this point, but it feels like he’s either going to have to improve that control or he’s going to see that ERA climb quickly. This Tigers lineup is a good place to start in getting in a rhythm pounding the zone.
Fulmer once looked like a promising piece for the future in Detroit, winning the Rookie of the Year in 2016 and getting Cy Young votes that year as well. He followed that up with an All-Star bid the following season, but things have gone downhill since then, in part due to injury. He missed all of 2019 and hasn’t been the same since, putting up an ERA over 8.00 last year. To start this season he’s been solid with a 3.86 ERA, however, and he’s had peripherals to match. The righty has also been pitching out of the bullpen a lot as well, though, and he’s had some trouble with the long ball as a starter the last couple seasons. Look for the Red Sox to hopefully be aggressive in trying to attack mistakes from the Tigers righty. Fulmer will feature a pair of mid-90s fastballs as well as a slider and a changeup.
5/5: Martín Pérez vs. Casey Mize, 7:10 PM ET
It has been a bit of a strange year for Pérez, who came into the season expected to be a pitcher with poor peripherals that needed some batted ball luck combined with weak contact to have success. Instead, he’s missing more bats than he ever has, and his peripherals are outpacing the results. He’s coming off his best start of the year in which he struck out seven over 5 2⁄3 so hopefully that’s the start of a turnaround. And really, he has yet to really tank a start but inefficiency on the mound has led to a lot of early exits for the lefty.
Mize was the number one overall pick made by the Tigers back in the 2018 draft, and he quickly became one of the top pitching prospects in all of baseball. The righty shot his way up the system after being drafted, making his major-league debut less than two years later when he came up last season. The early returns at the highest level have not been strong, though it’s only been 12 career starts over the last two seasons. This year, he’s pitched to a 5.06 ERA over five starts as he’s struggled to miss bats. His control isn’t terrible, but it’s also not so good that he can get away with giving up a lot of contact. The righty is coming off a solid start against the White Sox, allowing three runs over six innings. Mize will feature a pair of mid-90s fastballs to go along with a slider and a splitter.
5/6: Nathan Eovaldi vs. Spencer Turnbull, 1:10 PM ET (MLB Network for out-of-market)
For the most part, the Red Sox have gotten all they could have asked from Eovaldi early on this season, with the righty pitching on Opening Day and looking the part for pretty much the entire season. He went into his last start coming off his worst outing of the season to that point, but he got the bounce-back in Texas he was looking for, allowing just one run over six innings of work. They key for his turnaround this season has been the expansion of his arsenal to include more breaking balls than we’ve seen in the past. He needs everything to be working to get another strong outing to finish off this series.
The Tigers have a lot of potential in their rotation with pitchers on the right side of 30, and Turnbull is among the older names in that group at 28 years old. He’s a bit underrated among the top prospects, though, as he’s had some decent success in the majors over the last few years. He’s never really looked like an ace, but he misses bats at a solid rate and he’s been able to put forth respectable performances. This year, it’s been a struggle for the righty with a 4.50 ERA and the lowest strikeout rate of his career to this point. He is tough to square up and he gets a lot of ground balls, so if the Red Sox aren’t making contact it could be a long afternoon. Turnbull features a pair of fastballs in the low-to-mid-90s along with a slider as his main offerings. Old Friends
None. Notable Position Players
Miguel Cabrera is still the biggest name on this roster and is a future first-ballot Hall of Famer. He’s also just not the player he once was, struggling this year to the tune of a 25 wRC+. Obviously he’s not that bad and he’s still a threat to hit one out at all times, but he’s also no longer close to the best hitter on the planet.
Akil Baddoo was one of the biggest stories of the early part of the season as a Rule 5 pick who was dominating in this lineup. He’s cooled off a bit of late, however, and is now down to a roughly league-avearge line.
Jeimer Candelario is probably the best true-talent hitter in this lineup right now, which says a lot about the group. He’s a solid all-around hitter, though, and could be a pest at the top of this lineup all week.
Jonathan Schoop is a familiar face from his days in Baltimore, and he’s similar to what he’s always been. The power hasn’t shown up yet but it should, though the swing and miss and lack of walks puts a low floor on his game.
Robbie Grossman is an underrated veteran outfielder with a solid approach that has allowed him to keep his head above water while waiting for the power numbers to show up.
Wilson Ramos is one of the better hitting catchers in the game and has been for quite some time. He’s not going to hit a ton of singles, but he’ll hit for some pop to keep his line up above average.
Harold Castro has struggled when he’s gotten into the lineup this year and has yet to hit an extra-base hit this season.
Willi Castro is pretty emblematic of this Tigers lineup to start the year as they have just suffered from a lack of power up and down the order, with Castro being among the strugglers.
Niko Goodrum has been able to hit for power, but a below-average walk rate and a strikeout rate over 40 percent has kept his overall production below average. Bullpen Snapshot
Gregory Soto has been a bright spot in the late innings for this bullpen, though he can get in trouble here and there with his control.
Bryan Garcia and José Cisnero serve as the primary setup options for Detroit. Cisnero is a classic plus stuff/low command kind of reliever while Garcia has really just had a ton of trouble throwing strikes.
Daniel Norris is a former starter turned top left-handed reliever, and his lack of strikeout stuff hasn’t played very well in the role early on. Injuries
Nomar Mazara has been dealing with some abdominal pain, but he’s ready to come back soon, perhaps for this series but not definitely.
Julio Teheran went down with a shoulder injury early in the season and he’s been moved to the 60-day injured list, suggesting he’ll be out for quite some time. Weather Forecast
It’s certainly not going to be a great week weather-wise at Fenway, but they should be able to get all these games in. The only one that could be in a bit of doubt would be Wednesday, but right now it appears they should be able to make it work, though a delay would not be terribly surprising.

KNOW YOUR OPPONENT:
The Tigers finished one spot worse than the Red Sox in 2020, clinching the third overall pick in the draft with a 23-35 record. It was their fourth straight dismal season after going 64-98 in 2017 and 2018 and 47-114 in 2019. They’re off to a horrendous start this year and have a league-worst 8-21 record.
Detroit made some short-term veteran additions over the winter, signing free agents Robbie Grossman, Jonathan Schoop, Jose Ureña, Julio Teheran, Wilson Ramos, Nomar Mazara and Derek Holland, but the club didn’t do anything aggressive. They have the No. 12 farm system in baseball, according to The Athletic’s Keith Law, and have some exciting young players in the majors like former No. 1 overall pick Casey Mize (who will pitch Wednesday).
Detroit ranks last in the majors in OPS (.593) and batting average (.195) and 29th in runs (76) and hits (177). Pitching-wise, the Tigers are tied for 28th in team ERA (5.04) and 29th in strikeouts (213).
PITCHING PROBABLES:
Tuesday, 7:10 p.m. -- RHP Michael Fulmer (1-1, 3.86 ERA) vs. RHP Nick Pivetta (3-0, 2.81 ERA)
Wednesday, 7:10 p.m. -- RHP Casey Mize (1-3, 5.06 ERA) vs. LHP Martín Pérez (0-2, 4.70 ERA)
Thursday, 1:10 p.m. -- RHP Spencer Turnbull (1-2, 4.50 ERA) vs. RHP Nathan Eovaldi (4-2, 3.63 ERA)
THREE SOX TO WATCH:
Nick Pivetta
Somewhat quietly, Pivetta has gotten off to an incredible start in 2021, going 3-0 with a 2.81 ERA in his first five outings. He’ll look to continue rolling against a lowly Tigers offense after holding the Mets to a single hit while striking out seven in a 1-0 win Wednesday night.
Franchy Cordero
Cordero’s leash might be getting short, as he is hitless since April 19 and has one hit and 17 strikeouts in his last 34 at-bats. The Red Sox could soon consider sending him to Worcester if he doesn’t turn things around.
Nathan Eovaldi
Eovaldi bounced back nicely from a bad outing on April 24 with a strong showing Friday night in Texas, as he allowed one run on four hits while striking out five in six innings. He owns a career 1.89 ERA in three outings (19 innings) against the Tigers.
SERIES NOTES:
The series will pit Red Sox manager Alex Cora against his former boss -- Tigers manager A.J. Hinch -- for the first time since both were implicated (and subsequently suspended) in the Astros’ sign-stealing scandal. The Tigers hired Hinch shortly after his suspension expired last fall. The Red Sox last faced the Tigers in 2019, going 5-2 in seven games. The teams split a four-game series at Fenway from April 23-25 and Boston swept a three-game series in Detroit from July 5-7. Red Sox designated hitter J.D. Martinez spent four years with the Tigers from 2014 to 2017. Tigers bench coach George Lombard and assistant pitching coach Juan Nieves previously worked for the Red Sox.
UP NEXT:
The Red Sox aren’t home for long, as they’ll depart for Baltimore after Thursday’s game and face the Orioles four times between Friday and Monday. They’ll then return home to an increased capacity (25%) at Fenway Park and welcome the Athletics and Angels for three games apiece.
Fri. 5/7 - Mon. 5/10: @ Orioles (4)
Tue. 5/11 - Thu. 5/13: vs. Athletics (3)
Fri. 5/14 - Sun. 5/16: vs. Angels (3)
