Braves @ Red Sox 25th May 2021 7pm @ Fenway Park
Morton 2-2/4.60
Followed 2 lousy starts by limiting the Mutts to one run over 6 in his last start.
Richards 4-2/ 3.72
Has gone 4-0/2.27 in his last 5 starts. Will be the 2nd ever start vs the Braves in his career.
Braves-Red Sox series at Fenway could be packed with power
Baseballs could be flying out of Fenway Park at an accelerated rate when the visiting Atlanta Braves meet the Boston Red Sox in a two-game interleague series that begins Tuesday night and matches two slugger-filled lineups.
The Braves lead the major leagues with 78 home runs and hit a franchise-record 15 in their recently completed series against the Pittsburgh Pirates, in which Atlanta won three of four games.
The Red Sox hit two homers Sunday in a 6-2 loss to the Philadelphia Phillies and rank second in the American League with 65. Boston won two of three games in that series.
Atlanta's Austin Riley has been on an extended tear. Over the past 34 games, the third baseman has hit .369 with a 1.151 OPS. Over the past seven games he has 10 extra-base hits, including six home runs.
"I've been very hot in this game, and I've been very cold in this game," said Riley, 24, who is in his third major-league season. "I know it can humble you very quickly. So you're never satisfied."
Riley has become a better hitter since his rookie year, when he hit 14 homers in his first 161 at-bats but struggled to stay in the lineup as each opponent made adjustments. Riley no longer is a dead pull hitter and is comfortable using all parts of the field.
On Sunday he hit two homers -- one to left and one to right.
"When I'm good, I'm going to the big part of the field," he said. "I think that's where I am at right now. It allows me to hit the fastball and stay on the off-speed. I think that's my best self."
Boston has gotten a jolt of power from third baseman Rafael Devers, who has 13 home runs, 39 RBI and a .942 OPS this season. Devers has a five-game hitting streak, and 16 of his past 22 hits have been for extra bases.
"I'm just out there trying to be the best version of myself," Devers said.
Devers, Xander Bogaerts (10 homers, 30 RBI) and J.D. Martinez (12 homers, 37 RBI) make Boston the only team in the major leagues with three players who have at least 10 homers and 30 RBI.
Trying to prevent the offensive onslaught will be Boston right-hander Garrett Richards (4-2, 3.72 ERA) and Atlanta right-hander Charlie Morton (2-2, 4.60).
Richards will make his 10th start of the season. He's 3-0 with a 2.55 ERA in four starts in May. In his last outing on May 19 against Toronto, Richards allowed two runs in 6 2/3 innings, with five strikeouts.
Richards has one career start against the Braves, in 2014 while a member of the Los Angeles Angels, when he threw six shutout innings but did not earn a decision.
The Boston pitching staff has allowed one or fewer homers in each of its past 12 games and is the only team to allow three home runs in a game.
Morton looked good for the Braves in his most recent start, at the New York Mets on May 19. He allowed only one run on two hits over six innings in Atlanta's 5-4 victory, but the bullpen nearly let the game slip away.
The veteran has a history of success against the Red Sox. In 11 career starts against Boston, he's 6-1 with a 4.01 ERA. He faced them twice in 2020 and went 1-0 with a 3.60 ERA.

By Christopher Smith | csmith@masslive.com
The Boston Red Sox have optioned Michael Chavis to Triple-A Worcester. Boston is expected to activate Christian Arroyo from the 10-day injured list before Tuesday’s game.
Chavis appeared in 11 games for Boston, batting .273 (9-for-33) with a .273 on-base percentage, .485 slugging percentage, .758 OPS, one homer, four doubles, seven runs and two RBIs.
He has struck out 13 times and hasn’t drawn any walks..
Chavis made five starts at second base and two starts at first base. He led off four times.
Arroyo (left hand contusion) spent the weekend on a rehab assignment in Worcester. In three games, he went 1-for-10 with a double, run, two RBIs, one walk and four strikeouts.
He has slashed .275/.333/.377/.710 with seven doubles, nine runs, five RBIs, three walks and 18 strikeouts for Boston this year.
The Red Sox have Monday off. They then begin a two-game series at home against the Atlanta Braves on Tuesday. The Miami Marlins will be at Fenway Park on Friday, Saturday and Sunday.

Red Sox Notebook Red Sox option struggling Michael Chavis back to Triple A Worcester By Peter Abraham Globe Staff,Updated May 24, 2021, 7:48 p.m.
The Red Sox roster was static for much of April with only two changes to the group that started the season, one of them for only a day.
The transactions are coming at a much more rapid clip in May, the latest on Monday when infielder Michael Chavis was optioned back to Triple A Worcester.
Chavis was 9 for 33 (.273) with five extra-base hits in 10 games after being called up May 7. But he also struck out 13 times and was hitless in five at-bats with runners in scoring position.
His error at second base against the Blue Jays on Thursday extended the inning and led to a run scoring.
The move opens a spot for infielder Christian Arroyo, who is expected to be recalled before Tuesday night’s game against the Atlanta Braves at Fenway Park.
Arroyo has been on the injured list since May 9 with a bruised left hand after being hit by a pitch.
Arroyo was 1 for 10 with a double and two RBIs in a three-game rehabilitation assignment with Worcester and played two games at second base.
Arroyo hit .275 with a .710 OPS in 23 games before the injury and played well defensively at second base. Team USA gets going
Red Sox prospects Triston Casas and Jarren Duran arrived at Team USA’s training camp in Florida on Monday.
The US has exhibition games against Canada on Tuesday and Wednesday and against Venezuela on Thursday.
The eight-team Americas Qualifier starts next Monday against Nicaragua in Port St. Lucie, Fla. The winner advances to the Olympics with the second- and third-place teams advancing to a last-chance qualifying tournament in Mexico.
Another Red Sox prospect, infielder Jeter Downs, is playing for Colombia along with his brother, Jerry.
Jerry Downs was in the Sox organization from 2015-19, reaching Double A.
Face off
Garrett Richards is the scheduled starter for the Sox on Tuesday against Charlie Morton.
Both became free agents after last season. Morton was considered a good possibility for the Red Sox given his strong relationship with Alex Cora.
But the Braves worked quickly and signed Morton to a one-year, $15 million deal on Nov. 24. Morton is 2-2 with a 4.60 earned run average over nine starts and 45 innings. The Braves are 3-6 in his starts.
Richards is 4-2 with a 3.72 ERA over nine starts and 48⅓ innings. The Sox are 5-4 in his starts.
Richards was signed for one year and $8.5 million on Feb. 3 with the Sox holding a $10 million option for 2022. Or they can pay a $1.5 million buyout. The road back
Brandon Workman has appeared in five games for Worcester since rejoining the Red Sox organization. He has one run on three hits over five innings with four walks and five strikeouts … The Sox are 13-12 at Fenway ahead of the five-game homestand … Through Sunday, Xander Bogaerts was tied for sixth in the majors and third among position players with a 2.7 WAR. His 61 hits lead the American League … With the Rays beating the Blue Jays, 14-8, thanks to a seven-run 11th inning, the Red Sox are out of first place for the first time since April 7. Tampa Bay (30-19) has won 11 in a row and has a half-game lead on the 29-19 Sox.

Red Sox Notebook: Michael Chavis demoted to Worcester despite Franchy Cordero’s struggles
By Jason Mastrodonato | jason.mastrodonato@bostonherald.com | Boston Herald PUBLISHED: May 24, 2021 at 5:39 p.m. | UPDATED: May 24, 2021 at 7:04 p.m.
The Red Sox made a bold statement on Monday afternoon, when they decided they’d rather carry Franchy Cordero, one of the worst hitters in MLB this season, than the versatile Michael Chavis.
Chavis was optioned back to Triple-A Worcester, likely to make room for the pending return of Christian Arroyo (hand injury) ahead of Tuesday’s series-opening game with the Atlanta Braves.
The 25-year-old Chavis has hit .273 with a .758 OPS and five extra-base hits in 11 games while playing first and second base.
Meanwhile, the 26-year-old Cordero, who only plays left field, has just seven extra-base hits in 34 games this year. He’s hitting .179 with a .501 OPS, which ranks 249th out of the 255 big league players with at least 100 plate appearances.
It’s certainly possible that the Red Sox saw Cordero hit a mammoth home run on Sunday and decided to keep him around. It was his first homer of the season and it was a monster shot estimated at 474 feet. The 118-mph exit velocity made it the hardest-hit homer in MLB this season.
The power and speed of Cordero have made him an alluring player in the modern era, where exit velocity and sprint speed can be in higher demand than batting average, OPS or stolen bases.
And yet Cordero has long struggled to turn his tools into production. In parts of five seasons with three different teams, he’s hit .222 with a .678 OPS. He’s been traded twice already in his young career.
Cordero was originally supposed to platoon with the lefty-mashing Hunter Renfroe, but manager Alex Cora said Sunday it’s been difficult to find ways to get him into the game.
“Hunter has been playing a lot against lefties and righties but it’s tough,” Cora said. “It’s not easy. He’s making progress, swinging the bat a lot better… But it’s hard. We’ve got an extra player and he’s a good player too. We’ll find a balance between getting him at-bats and obviously putting the best lineup out there.”
Chavis was Cora’s leadoff hitter four times since he was called up in early May.
One logical explanation for demoting him over Cordero is that the Red Sox prefer Cordero’s left-handed bat off the bench.
Rafael Devers and Alex Verdugo are the only left-handed hitting regulars in the lineup, though the Red Sox do have two switch-hitting utility guys in Kiké Hernandez and Danny Santana. In first place no longer
For the first time in 44 days, the Red Sox fell out of first place in the American League East on Monday.
The Sox didn’t have a game on the schedule, but the Tampa Bay Rays scored seven runs in the 11th inning against the Toronto Blue Jays to win their 11th straight game and move a half-game up on the Red Sox.
The Rays and Red Sox don’t meet again until a three-game set in St. Petersburg, Fla., starting June 22. Verdugo hampered
Keep an eye on Verdugo in the upcoming series vs. the Braves. The Red Sox’ two-hitter has been nursing a hamstring injury and missed most of the weekend series against the Phillies, but Cora used him as a pinch-hitter late in Sunday’s game and Verdugo was clearly affected by the injury as he hobbled around the bases. Catching struggles
Starting catcher Christian Vazquez (.257 average/.678 OPS) has quietly cooled off after a hot start to the season, while backup Kevin Plawecki (.267/.727) has out-produced him on the offensive side. Even when Plawecki starts games, he’s often been lifted late for a pinch-hitter or a defensive replacement. Bush weighs in
Here’s pitching coach Dave Bush with an interesting thought on all the hit batters and no-hitters in the game this year:
“If you look at wild pitches, hit batters, there’s definitely an argument to be made that command is not what it once was,” said Bush, who had a nine-year career with the Blue Jays, Brewers and Rangers. “I would also say the strike zone has probably tightened up a little bit, certainly a different shaped strike zone than it used to be, and pitchers’ stuff is better than it used to be. I think it would be unfair to suggest that pitchers are going to throw harder, have sharper stuff, have a tighter strike zone, and still maintain the same command that they used to have. I don’t know that that’s realistic in the short term. …
“You see young guys in the big leagues earlier than they used to be. One thing that you tackle a little bit later is the command. We prioritize stuff from kids all the way on through high school and college. The minor leagues prioritize stuff and then the command comes later on. In some cases, like right now, command is a process they’re learning in the big leagues. You’re seeing the results of that.”

Red Sox vs. Braves Series Preview
A look at this week’s short two-game set in Boston. By Matt_Collins@MattRyCollins May 25, 2021, 12:01pm EDT
Talking Chop The opponent in one sentence
The Braves came into the season with high expectations to be one of the best teams in the National League, but they’ve been more mediocre than good in this first portion of the season. Record
23-24 Head-to-head record
0-0 Trend
Up, a bit. It kind of feels like cheating a bit to say any team is trending in the right direction coming off a series in which they took on the Pirates, but technically that is where they are. Atlanta just finished off a four-game set at home against Pittsburgh and took the final three. Overall they’ve won four of their last five. Pitching Matchups
5/25: Garrett Richards vs. Charlie Morton, 7:10 PM ET
So much of the early-season success from the Red Sox came from their rotation, with Richards being the only part of the fivesome that struggled in any significant way for most of April. More recently, other starters have begun to falter, but it’s been Richards who is now leading the group. The righty has looked much more like what the most optimistic among us envisioned when he first joined the team, as he’s pitched to a 2.27 ERA over his last five starts to go with 31 strikeouts in 31 2⁄3 innings with only nine walks. It’s that control and command that is key, and he’ll need to be on his A-game against an underachieving but still quite talented Braves lineup.
Morton is a familiar face as he spent the last two seasons with the Rays, including 2019 when he finished third in Cy Young voting. The veteran righty totally turned his career around toward the end of last decade with the Astros, and it looked like he might retire this past winter. Instead, he decided to stay down south and sign on with Atlanta, where things have been a mixed bag this year. His strikeouts are still up above 10 per nine innings, but his walks are a bit up as well and he’s allowing more homers than ever before. That said, some of his 4.60 ERA sure looks fluky just taking a quick look at his underlying numbers, and he is coming off a start in which he struck out eight and walked none while allowing one run over six innings to the Mets. Morton will offer a nasty curveball that leads his repertoire along with a pair of mid-90s fastballs and a cutter.
5/26: Nick Pivetta vs. Drew Smyly, 7:10 PM ET
Pivetta has been such a revelation for the Red Sox this year, and we’re now at the point where the expectation isn’t just to keep the team in the game, but to be straight-up good every time out. That’s an important distinction, and is the marking of a mid-rotation starter rather than a back-end one. Whether or not Pivetta has really earned that is up for debate, and he will get a chance against a familiar NL East foe here to prove it. Last time out was a very Philadelphia Pivetta outing in which he allowed five runs (four earned) over five innings, but struck out eight while walking just two. Before the season, we’d take those kinds of outings from him most days. Now, it seems like a disappointment, which I think marks how far he’s come this year.
It was somewhat hidden because he was on a relatively bad team in a pandemic season that people tuned out a bit, but Smyly had a bit of a breakout in 2020 with the Giants. He had broken out earlier in his career with the Rays and Tigers, but injuries had kind of put his career off track. His strikeouts were way up in 2020, though, and he did a better job of keeping the ball in the yard. Things haven’t gone as swimmingly in the homer department this year, though, as his 11 homers allowed lead the league, which has led to an ERA over 5.00. That said, he’s been much better in May, pitching to a 2.00 ERA in three starts with two balls leaving the yard. Look for the Red Sox to hunt mistakes, particularly early in counts before he can start to go for strikeouts with his secondaries. The southpaw has been mainly a two-pitch pitcher this year with a low-90s fastball and a curveball, plus the occasional cutter. Old Friends
Pablo Sandoval is not really considered a friend by many in Boston, but he is of course an iconic player from last decade for the disappointment he was. Since leaving, he’s hung on as a high-energy bench player, providing solid depth for the Giants and now the Braves. Notable Position Players
Ronald Acuña Jr. has surpassed Nolan Arenado as my favorite non-Red Sox player in the game, and he is just unbelievable in every facet. He’s athletic and flashes the leather defensively while putting pressure on defenses with his baserunning. And then at the plate he’s one of the best in the game with elite power and elite plate discipline.
Freddie Freeman is also one of the best hitters in the game and forms perhaps the best one-two punch in baseball with Acuña. Freeman does it all with the bat, and he does it all so well that it’s hard for any one of his skills to really shine through the most. Coming into this season he’s had eight straight seasons with a wRC+ of at least 130, which is just wild.
Marcell Ozuna ended up going back to the Braves this winter in free agency after being courted by a few other clubs, including the Red Sox. He’s been a disappointment so far, though, particularly in the power department. As we saw last year, Fenway could be the place to change that for him.
Ozzie Albies has had some bad luck on batted balls, but he’s still been safely better than average this year thanks to a high contact rate and bigger power than you’d expect from his stature.
Austin Riley is a boom or bust power hitter in the middle of this lineup who has been red-hot recently.
Dansby Swanson is another streaky hitter who will strike out a bunch but is coming into this series swinging a hot bat.
William Contreras is a recent call up and a top prospect in the Braves organization, and he’s kept his head above water thus far thanks to big power.
Guillermo Heredia has been a surprise in this lineup so far, and while he’s gotten some luck on batted balls he’s also put up strong underlying numbers on top of that. Bullpen Snapshot
Will Smith has led what has been a shaky Braves bullpen, and while it seems he’s been a bit unlucky based on his peripherals his control has also been a bit off.
Chris Martin has been hurt for most of the season, but he just recently returned to bolster this group. He’s not missing many bats, but his command is good enough that he can still get results.
A.J. Minter is a power lefty and is similar to Darwinzon Hernandez in that they both can miss a ton of bats, but they can also suffer lapses of control. Injuries
Mike Soroka missed most of last season with an Achilles issue, and it is still bothering him to the point where it looks like he’ll miss all of this season as well.
Travis d’Arnaud tore a ligament in his thumb early this month and could miss the rest of the season because of it.
Cristian Pache tweaked a hamstring in the middle of May and while he’ll miss this series it doesn’t appear it’s a long-term concern.
Huascar Ynoa punched the bench in the dugout after a poor outing and broke his hand, which will keep him out for a couple of months.
Touki Toussaint has been dealing with a shoulder issue since camp in March and hasn’t been able to throw yet.
Alex Jackson is currently rehabbing and trying to get himself back into the Braves catching mix. Weather Forecast
It should be a good couple of days in Boston for these two clubs. There is a very slight chance of rain being a nuisance on Wednesday, but I doubt it will be bad enough to cause real havoc, if it even shows up at all.

THREE SOX TO WATCH:
1. Franchy Cordero
Cordero remains on Boston’s 26-man roster. He seemed like a top candidate to be optioned to Triple-A Worcester to make room for Christian Arroyo, who will be activated from the IL on Tuesday. But the Red Sox instead optioned Michael Chavis. Cordero hit his first home run Sunday in Philly. It went 474 feet and left the bat at 118.6 mph. Cordero should be in the starting lineup Tuesday against righty Charlie Morton.
2. Josh Taylor
The opposition is only 1-for-19 (.053) against the left-handed reliever during May. But hitters are batting .405 (17-for-42) against him at Fenway Park. Opponents are 2-for-22 (.091) against him on the road.
3. Garrett Richards
The righty, who starts Tuesday, is 4-0 with a 2.27 ERA (31 ⅔ innings, eight earned runs) in his past five starts.
SERIES NOTES:
The Red Sox optioned Michael Chavis to Triple-A Worcester on Monday. Christian Arroyo (left hand contusion) is expected to be activated before Tuesday’s game. The Red Sox face both a right-handed and left-handed starter this series. They are 19-14 against right-handed starters and 10-5 against left-handed starters. Xander Bogaerts is 10-for-29 (.345) with one homer, three doubles and two RBIs against Charlie Morton, who starts for the Braves on Tuesday. J.D. Martinez is 9-for-26 (.346) with two doubles against Morton. The Braves are third in the majors in OPS (.758). They are second in slugging (.442) trailing only the Red Sox (.450). They lead the big leagues with 78 home runs. Atlanta is 22nd in reliever ERA (4.62). Boston has won seven of its past 10 games but has dropped to second place in the AL East for the first time in 46 days. Nick Pivetta, who starts Wednesday, leads Red Sox starters in opponent batting average (.205) and strikeouts (50).
UP NEXT:
