Alex Speier @alexspeier · 6h Pivetta is the first Red Sox starter to be lifted in the middle of a no-hitter (with at least 5 innings in the books) since Ernie Shore was lifted after 5 no-hit innings on 10/2/1916.
Darwinzon Hernandez fell behind all three hitters, 1-0. This year, if he gets to 0-1, Hernandez has struck out 43.4% of batters and held them to a .267 OBP. If he falls behind, 1-0, he's struck out 21.8% of hitters, walked 30.9%, and yielded a .436 OBP.

Alex Speier @alexspeier · 5h Red Sox lose, 1-0, on a walkoff wild pitch - following a SB/E2. That is a fitting end for a roadtrip in which their defense was brutal.

Alex Cora on removing Boston Red Sox’s Nick Pivetta with no-hitter in seventh; ‘It was a no-brainer’ Updated 11:26 PM; Today 11:18 PM
By Christopher Smith | csmith@masslive.com
Boston Red Sox manager Alex Cora removed starting pitcher Nick Pivetta with two outs in the seventh inning in a midst of a no-hitter against the Tampa Bay Rays on Thursday.
Cora replaced Pivetta (at 100 pitches) with left-handed reliever Josh Taylor who intentionally walked Manuel Margot, a pinch hitter for left-handed batter Ji-Man Choi. Taylor then retired left-handed hitter Joey Wendle for the final out of the inning, stranding two base runners.
“It wasn’t tough,” Cora said about the decision to remove Pivetta. “It’s a 0-0 game. We have one of the best lefties (Taylor) in the game, probably the best lefty throwing the ball in the game. It was a no-brainer.”
The Red Sox ended up losing 1-0 on a walkoff wild pitch by Matt Barnes in the bottom of the ninth inning.
But Pivetta was brilliant. He allowed two walks and struck out eight. The righty topped out at 98.6 mph with his four-seam fastball. He threw 45 four-seamers, averaging 95.7 mph, per Baseball Savant. He mixed in 29 curveballs, 24 sliders and two changeups.
It would have been risky to keep Pivetta in to face Choi who almost broke up the no-hitter in the fifth.
Right fielder Hunter Renfroe made a running catch on Choi’s 344-foot, 106.9-mph line drive for the second out of the fifth.
“I did not want to come out but it’s not about me,” Pivetta said. “It’s about the game. It’s about winning baseball games and that’s what’s most important. The matchups worked out really well with JT. He’s been doing a great job all series with those lefties. And that’s really important. So it was a tie ballgame at the time. I was at 100 pitches. So right now it’s just about winning baseball games. That’s what’s most important.”
Pivetta said Cora told him he did a great job and explained his reason for going with Taylor against the left-handed hitters. Taylor has been one of the game’s best lefties. He now has recorded 21 straight scoreless outings. He hasn’t allowed a run since April 24.
“I don’t mind the decision at all,” Pivetta said.
The decision also clearly was about keeping Pivetta healthy. He already had thrown 100 pitches. He averaged approximately 15 pitches per inning. So he was on a pace to throw another 30 pitches if he had pitched a complete game.
Pivetta hasn’t thrown more than 111 pitches in any game this season.
“To be honest with you, it was the right call on AC’s part,” Pivetta added. “It made the most sense. We’re all about winning series. It didn’t happen today but it was the right call by him.”

Boston Red Sox’s Alex Cora: ‘I think the way we played against these guys tonight shows how good we are’ Updated 12:23 AM; Today 12:23 AM
By Christopher Smith | csmith@masslive.com
Manager Alex Cora doesn’t view the Red Sox’s 1-0 loss to the Rays on Thursday as a devastating defeat.
Nick Pivetta pitched 6 ⅔ innings without allowing a hit. Boston pitchers combined to give up just two hits. But the Red Sox lost to the Rays on a walkoff wild pitch by closer Matt Barnes.
“I thought it was a great baseball game,” Cora said. “We ended up losing 1-0. We did a lot of good things. We did a lot of bad things. At the end, they got a good lead at third, the ball gets away from Christian (Vázquez). They win the game. But I’ve got to be honest with you. A lot of people, they didn’t believe in this team before the season. I think the way we played against these guys tonight shows how good we are. And we have a lot of work to do. We know that. But we belong in the conversation. We’re really good. And it’s going to be a fun summer in Boston.”
The Red Sox lost two of three games to Tampa. They entered the series with a half game lead over the Rays for first place. They leave St. Petersburg a half game behind Tampa in the AL East standings.
Boston is 44-31 and on a 95.1-win pace after Baseball Prospectus’ 2021 PECOTA Standings projected the Red Sox to win 82.7 games. Fangraphs.com gave Boston 37.9% odds to make the postseason entering this season.
“We’ve got work to do, obviously,” Cora said. “We need to keep getting better defensively.”
The Red Sox made four errors in this three-game series. Vázquez also should have blocked Barnes’ curveball in the dirt that resulted in the winning run Thursday.
“We’ve got to put good at-bats (together). We’ve got to pitch better,” Cora added. “I think all around we’re a good baseball team. I’ve been saying it since spring training. Not because you lose two out of three to these guys, it doesn’t mean we’re going the other way. We are where we are in the standings. We know that. We put ourselves in this conversation and now we’ve just got to keep playing consistently.”
The Red Sox had an opportunity to take a lead in the seventh.
Hunter Renfroe doubled to lead off the frame, then Vázquez singled to center field with one out. Third base coach Carlos Febles waved home Renfroe who had to wait before running to see if the ball would be caught. He then slowed down momentarily rounding the bag. He was thrown out at home plate by Rays center fielder Kevin Kiermaier.
Vázquez then got picked off second base by catcher Francisco Mejía.
“Christian trying to get a good secondary (lead),” Cora said. “And he was overly aggressive with the swing and he got caught in no-man’s land. With Hunter, it seems like a bad read but you’ve got to make sure the ball finds green. We were aggressive there. It was a close play at the plate. But I don’t think it was a bad base running play by him.”

meh not crazy about this 1) would not be shocked if it is for Arroyo. When Cora says he will be back in a day, getting treatment, it takes them a week to figure out what knee it is. 2) Not crazy about Chavis, and Cordero can stay the hell down in AAA( the only place he hits) 3) would rather Wally the Mascot lead off than Santana. Chris Cotillo @chriscotillo · 2m Sources: Michael Chavis called up and meeting the Red Sox in St. Pete tonight.
Haven’t nailed down corresponding move but Arroyo to IL is possible. So is something with Danny Santana. Not crazy about Chavis either, but he can't be any worse than Santana.
With regards to Cordero, I think he deserves another shot. I'd call him back up. Maybe it's just the difference in pitching, but maybe he's figured something out.

Pete Abraham @peteabe · 4h Sox walked off on a wild pitch. Wow.
1-0 Rays, final. This one really hurt.
The good news is that Pivetta and the pen pitched really well.
The bad news is that the offense couldn't muster a single run. Really?
I have a sour taste in my mouth from this loss.

Pete Abraham @peteabe · 6h Pivetta is done after 100 pitches and 6.2 IP.
Cold-blooded but in a 0-0 game, you have to play to win.
They weren't going to let Pivetta throw 125-135 pitches or whatever. So whether he was taken out now or in the next inning doesn't matter. It was the right move. He was not going to get the complete game in with a reasonable pitch count. As much as this one hurt, I always say that losing these close games is a much better sign for the team than getting blown out. The outcome of the game has nothing to do with the Rays outplaying us.

That's not a painful loss. That's getting set on fire, mauled by tiger and hit by a truck.
Pretty much.
