KNOW YOUR OPPONENT:
The Athletics just dropped two of three to the Rangers to start their homestand and finished June with a 17-9 record. Entering Friday, Oakland is 1 ½ games behind the Astros in the American League West and occupies one of the two AL wild-card berths.
The A’s won the West with a 36-24 record in 2020 and advanced to the ALDS before losing to the Astros in four games in a best-of-five series. They made a series of significant moves over the winter, adding free agents Mitch Moreland, Trevor Rosenthal and Sergio Romo while making a major trade (Khris Davis to the Rangers for Elvis Andrus). Liam Hendriks, Marcus Semien, Mike Minor, Robbie Grossman, Joakim Soria, Tommy La Stella and Jake Lamb all departed the A’s in free agency; pitchers Mike Fiers and Yusmeiro Petit re-signed with the club.
Offensively, the A’s are a middle-of-the pack club, ranking 13th in the majors in OPS (.723), 19th in average (.234) and 12th in homers (103). Their pitchers have also been middling, ranking 12th in ERA (3.92), tied for 20th in strikeouts (679) and 21st in opponent average (.248).
Four key members of the A’s are on the injured list: outfielders Mark Canha (hip) and Stephen Piscotty (wrist) as well as pitchers Mike Fiers (elbow) and Trevor Rosenthal (thoracic outlet syndrome). Rosenthal underwent surgery in early April and is not expected back until sometime late this year.
PITCHING PROBABLES:
Friday, 9:40 p.m. ET -- LHP Eduardo Rodriguez (6-4, 5.83 ERA) vs. RHP Frankie Montas (7-7, 4.72 ERA)
Saturday, 7:15 p.m. ET --RHP Garrett Richards (4-5, 4.96 ERA) vs. LHP Cole Irvin (6-7, 3.64 ERA)
Sunday, 4:07 p.m. ET -- RHP Nick Pivetta (6-3, 4.43 ERA) vs. RHP James Kaprielian (4-2, 3.06 ERA)
THREE SOX TO WATCH:
Garrett Richards
Richards’ last start was fascinating, as he remade his pitch mix in real time and battled into the sixth inning against Kansas City. The veteran righty owns a 10.32 ERA in his last three starts but will try to right the ship Saturday afternoon against the Athletics.
Kiké Hernández
Hernández has had his best offensive stretch of the season recently, hitting .289 with four homers, nine RBIs and a 1.037 OPS in his last 13 games since June 15. He hit three leadoff homers in the last five games of the Sox’ recent homestand.
Christian Arroyo
Arroyo is likely to be activated from the injured list at some point during the series in Oakland. The second baseman, who was placed on the IL with a right knee contusion on June 24, played a rehab game with the WooSox on Thursday night. His return is imminent.
SERIES NOTES:
The Red Sox have won each of their last seven games, their second-longest winning streak this season (9 games, April 5-14). Xander Bogaerts (26 games) and J.D. Martinez (20 games) each extended their on-base streaks Thursday, continuing the two-longest active on-base streaks in the majors. Bogaerts’ streak is the longest by a Red Sox player this season. This season is the 14th time the Red Sox have won at least 51 of their first 82 games. They went on to win the World Series in each of the previous 2 instances (2007, 2018). Boston is 24-14 on the road this season and 8-13 against the American League West. Josh Taylor has made 24 consecutive scoreless appearances (19.1 innings), MLB’s longest streak of 2021. Taylor’s streak is the longest by a left-handed pitcher in Red Sox history. Oakland took two of three from the Red Sox at Fenway Park from May 11-13. The clubs did not meet in 2020, but in 2019, the Red Sox won four of seven against the A’s, but lost three of four in Oakland. Former Red Sox first baseman Mitch Moreland is hitting .239 with six homers and a .677 OPS in 55 games for Oakland. The A’s also have former Sox infielder Jed Lowrie and former Sox pitching prospects Frankie Montas and J.B Wendelken on their roster.
UP NEXT:
The Red Sox will finish their west-coast trip in Anaheim before finishing the first half of the season with three home games against the Phillies. Here’s what’s next:
Mon. July 5 -- Wed. July 7 -- @ Angels (3)
Thu. July 8 -- OFF DAY
Fri. July 9 - Sun. July 11 -- @ Phillies (3)
Mon. July 12 - Wed. July 14 -- ALL-STAR BREAK

Eduardo Rodriguez stuck out six batters with one hit and two walks allowed over six scoreless innings in a no-decision as the Red Sox won 3-2 against the A's on Friday.
Rodriguez had his best start of the season on Friday, keeping Oakland off the scoreboard for six innings while striking out six batters. He allowed just three baserunners with two walks and one hit. Rodriguez needed just 89 pitches to log the quality start, throwing 57 for strikes and generating nine whiffs. The 28-year-old left-hander has been underwhelming this season, posting a 5.42 ERA, 1.35 WHIP, and 99 strikeouts over 84 2/3 innings. Rodriguez is in line for a matchup against the Angels in Anaheim his next time out.

Clutch hit, throw from Hernández beat A's Boston's outfield skills on full display again in dramatic win 3:54 AM ADT Justice delos Santos
Justice delos Santos @justdelossantos
OAKLAND -- Enrique Hernández needed to be perfect ... and he was.
Hernández nailed the tying run at home plate in the bottom of the 10th inning with a textbook throw from center field, helping prevent an A's comeback attempt on Friday night at the Coliseum. One routine flyout later, Boston secured a 3-2 win that had Hernández's mark all over it, thanks to some extra-inning heroics.
The throw, nailing Seth Brown as he slid into the plate, was arguably the brightest gem by a Red Sox outfielder this year, one that served as a microcosm for the stellar defense the team's outfield has played all season long.
“I can put my life in front of whatever because I know they’re gonna protect my life too,” said starter Eduardo Rodriguez of the effort of his teammates. “These guys are amazing. Every time, I get a ground ball, fly ball or whatever, I know they’re going to make a good play.”
The A’s were threatening to walk it off in the bottom of the 10th. Jed Lowrie began the inning with an opposite field single off reliever Adam Ottavino, putting runners at the corners with no one out.
On a 1-2 count, catcher Sean Murphy flailed at one of Ottavino’s signature sliders, popping a ball into moderately shallow center field. Hernández raced in, and when he realized he was going to make the catch easily, he geared up. He staggered his feet, preparing to fire home. As the ball came into his glove, he exploded, throwing the ball with such force that he ended up crashing onto the outfield grass.
Brown took off. Hernández, citing his internal baseball clock, didn't think Brown would actually take off, considering how shallow the fly ball was.
Hernández’s throw was a perfect one-hopper to catcher Christian Vázquez, whose role in the play shouldn’t be lost either. Vázquez got behind the plate, disrupting Brown’s forward momentum by forcing him to go from outside the baseline to inside. After snagging the throw, the catcher lunged at Brown and applied the tag.
The end result was Hernández’s fourth outfield assist of the season, none of which have been more timely or dramatic. At 93 mph, it was the second-hardest Hernández has thrown a ball this season.
“It wasn’t deep enough and him getting behind the ball was the key,” manager Alex Cora said. “I was like, ‘This guy is going to be out.’”
Hernández’s clutch heroics actually began in the top of the frame. After Elvis Andrus tied things up with a solo homer off Matt Barnes -- Andrus' first of the season -- in the bottom of the ninth, Hernández immediately gave Boston the lead back in the 10th. On the first pitch he saw from Lou Trivino, Hernández muscled a broken-bat single into center field, scoring Michael Chavis from second base.
In a sense, Hernández’s masterful throw summed up how strong the Boston outfield has been all season long. Entering play Friday, Boston’s outfield combined for 20 defensive runs saved. Only the Rays (25) came into the day with more.
Hernández has played no small part in that success, as have Hunter Renfroe and Alex Verdugo, each of whom rank among the league leaders in defensive runs saved at their primary positions.
“I’ve played with Dugie before [with the Dodgers] and I don’t even have to talk about what Hunter has done in right field this year,” Hernández said.
It’s far from the same star-studded outfield trio that led the Red Sox to a World Series three years ago, but the combination of Hernández, Verdugo and Renfroe is proving that, when it comes to defense, few trios are as slick, smooth and sharp with the leather.
“The way we play defense in the outfield is elite,” Cora said. “I know a lot of people, they had their doubts coming into the season because we didn’t have Mookie (Betts), Benny (Andrew Benintendi) and Jackie (Bradley Jr.), but these three guys are playing up there. They’re playing elite defense.”

We’re shooting for Saturday with him.” (Last updated: July 1) 10-day IL

It's July 3 and the Red Sox are on a 101-win pace.
They are 52-31. If they play .500 baseball the rest of the way, they still win 91 games.

Kiké Hernández cuts down A’s in 10th inning, Red Sox win eighth straight By Peter Abraham Globe Staff,Updated July 3, 2021, 2 hours ago
OAKLAND, Calif. — The ball was still in the air as the runner tagged up at third base. The game hung in the balance on what would happen next in the bottom of the 10th inning.
But Red Sox manager Alex Cora saw it coming.
“He’s out! He’s out!” Cora said in the dugout to third base coach Carlos Febles in an excited mix of English and Spanish. “He’s out!”
Kiké Hernández made the catch coming in and used his momentum to fire a one-hop strike to the plate. Christian Vazquez dropped the tag on Seth Brown and the Red Sox had a double play that helped secure a 3-2 victory against the Oakland Athletics.
The Athletics were too bold. The Red Sox lead the majors with 25 outfield assists and Hernández has four of them from center field. He was surprised that third base coach Mark Kotsay sent Brown.
“In my mind, in my baseball clock. I felt like I came in a lot. I just wanted to make sure I made a good throw,” Hernández said.
The 52-31 Red Sox have won eight straight and now have a 4½-game lead in the American League East, their largest of the season.
In their return to Oakland Coliseum for the first time in 27 months on Friday night, the Sox overcame a blown save by Matt Barnes in the ninth inning to beat the Athletics in front of a season-high crowd of 32,304.
“It was a great win in a place that’s been tough for us,” Cora said.
Eduardo Rodriguez pitched six scoreless innings, allowing one hit. He left with a 2-0 lead that the bullpen couldn’t hold.
Garrett Whitlock allowed a home run by Jed Lowrie in the seventh inning. With a 2-1 lead, Barnes started the ninth inning and gave up a leadoff home run to Elvis Andrus for his fourth blown save.
Barnes sent the game into extra innings and the Sox scored first. With Michael Chavis at second, Hernandez’s broken-bat single into shallow right field scored the go-ahead run.
With Brown at second to open the bottom of the inning, Lowrie singled off Adam Ottavino. Brown stopped at third.
Sean Murphy followed with a fly ball to center and Hernández’s throw ended the threat. Frank Schwindel’s fly ball to left gave Ottavino his sixth save.
Athletics starter Frankie Montas, the former Red Sox prospect, didn’t allow a hit over the first three innings.
He walked Xander Bogaerts to open the fourth inning. Rafael Devers followed within a sinking live drive to left field. Tony Kemp broke in and tried to make a diving catch, but the ball skipped by him and rolled. And rolled. And rolled some as Bogaerts came all the way around to score on a double.
Danny Santana singled to open the fifth inning. Montas hit Chavis with a pitch before getting Hernández to ground into a double play.
Alex Verdugo singled down the third base line to drive in Santana.
The Sox loaded the bases with two outs in the sixth inning as Devers and Renfroe singled and Santana walked. J.B. Wendelken, another former Red Sox prospect, came in and Chavis fouled out swinging at the first pitch.
The Athletics advanced only one runner into scoring position against Rodriguez. That came in the second inning when Chad Pinder reached on an error by Gonzalez at third base and moved up to second on a groundout.
With two outs, Schwindel grounded a ball into the hole at shortstop. Pinder would have scored easily if not for Bogaerts making a diving stop. He had no play on Schwindel but saved the run.
Rodriguez then struck out Kemp swinging at a sinker.
Rodriguez retired 12 of the last 13 batters he faced, the final eight in a row. He struck out six and walked two.
“Eduardo was amazing,” Cora said.
The 52-31 Red Sox have won eight straight and now have a 4½-game lead in the American League East, their largest of the season.
After an eight-game stretch that saw him go 0-4 with a 7.4 earned run average, Rodriguez has allowed two runs over 12 innings in his last two starts and struck out 14 with two walks.
“I would say with every start I’m getting better,” Rodriguez said.

Red Sox notebook Red Sox All-Stars Rafael Devers, Xander Bogaerts ‘have something special going on right now’ By Peter Abraham Globe Staff,Updated July 2, 2021, 8:34 p.m.
OAKLAND, Calif. — Rafael Devers was somewhere over the United States on the team plane Thursday night when word came he had been selected to the All-Star team for the first time.
Manager Alex Cora made an announcement to the entire group that Devers and Xander Bogaerts had been voted in as starters.
“It felt great. It’s something every player wants,” Devers said Friday.
Devers and Bogaerts would be the first Sox teammates to start at third base and shortstop in the game.
“Everyone knows how close I am with Xander,” Devers said. “He’s one of my closest friends. He helps me out a ton. I’m super excited I can share this with him.”
Said Bogaerts: “We have something special going on right now.”
Devers is the first Sox third baseman to be elected as a starter since Shea Hillenbrand in 2002.
Devers went into Friday’s game against the Athletics hitting .288 with a .941 OPS. His 69 RBIs were the most in the majors, with his 45 extra-base hits second.
Devers joined Vladimir Guerrero Jr. and Fernando Tatis Jr., both 22, as first-time All-Stars from the Dominican Republic. Ronald Acuña Jr., 23, made it for a second time.
They are baseball’s future.
“It’s really exciting,” Devers said. “It’s going to be a lot of fun to be on the same field as them.”
This has become a regular thing for Bogaerts, now a three-time All-Star. He would be the first Red Sox shortstop to start twice in the Midsummer Classic since Rico Petrocelli in 1967 and ’69.
“I just put in the work every year, just trying to stay healthy,” Bogaerts said. “I think that’s the only way you can produce and perform and play at the level that you would want to personally.”
Some evaluators saw Bogaerts as a third baseman when he was coming up because of his size. He rebelled against that label and over time proved his point.
“I’m happy with the player I am today,” Bogaerts said. “I’ve been on a couple of playoff runs. I have two rings with the team. I guess I’m a winning player if you want to put it like that.”
The pitchers and reserves will be announced on Sunday. Try, try again
Garrett Richards takes the mound for the Sox on Saturday having allowed 17 earned runs on 32 hits over 16⅔ innings in his last four starts. The downturn has coincided with Major League Baseball saying it would enforce the rule against pitchers using substances on the ball beyond rosin.
Richards hasn’t had a quality start since June 1. His earned run average has swelled from 3.75 to 4.96 in the five starts since.
Richards managed 3⅔ scoreless innings against the Kansas City Royals to finish his last start, and the Sox hope he can build on that.
“We keep showing him his numbers and the stuff, which is very important,” Cora said. “We’re comparing it to some of the best pitchers in the league and the numbers are there.”
Richards is now using a changeup to enhance his diminished repertoire. He needed something to get hitters off his fastball.
“We’re looking forward for him to go out there and compete,” Cora said. “This is not about spin rates. There are certain days you have nothing and you have to give us five innings. Somehow, someway, you have to find a way. I believe the last one, towards the end, he did that.”
Arroyo getting closer
Christian Arroyo was in the lineup for Triple A Worcester to continue his rehabilitation assignment before the game was rained out. He will likely remain there Saturday. Cora said the plan for the infielder was to “most likely” rejoin the major league team Monday in Anaheim. Arroyo has been on the injured list since June 21 with a bone bruise just below his right kneecap.
Backup catcher Kevin Plawecki was on the field at Oakland Coliseum before the game Friday running the bases to test his strained left hamstring.
Plawecki still has some soreness, but has been catching in the bullpen and handled Chris Sale’s bullpen session Wednesday.
“He’s not quite there yet,” Cora said.
It’s unlikely Plawecki will require a rehab assignment before being activated. Ohtani time
The Red Sox will face Shohei Ohtani on either Tuesday or Wednesday in Anaheim next week. He has pitched against the Sox once, allowing three runs over two innings at Angel Stadium on April 17, 2018. Ohtani took the loss in a game the Sox won, 10-1… Adam and Brette Ottavino are organizing the team’s fourth annual “Christmas in July” fundraiser for Boston Children’s Hospital. It runs from July 5-11. The first 10 people to make a $500 donation at bostonchildrens.org/christmasinjuly will receive an autographed ball from a prominent Sox player.
