Red Sox @ Halos Monday, 5th July 2021 930pm @ Angel Stadium
Perez 6-4/4.04
Perez pitched 5 1/3 innings of two-run ball Wednesday in the defeat of the Royals. Perez improved to 6-4 with a 4.04 ERA. He's had just one strong outing against a contender -- he impressed with 7 2/3 scoreless innings against the Astros on June 3 before giving up six runs in two innings against the same team five days later -- but he's giving the Red Sox all they could have hoped for. His 4.04 ERA would be easily his best mark since he came in at 3.62 in 20 starts in his first full season in 2013.
Suarez 3-1/1.98
Suarez will start for the Angels on Monday against the Red Sox. This move into the rotation could be a permanent thing for Suarez, who had been flourishing to the tune of a 1.98 ERA, 1.098 WHIP, and 26/9 K/BB ratio over 27 1/3 innings of relief.
Boston Red Sox vs. Los Angeles Angels Monday, July 5, 2021 at 9:38pm EDT Written by Jordy
The hotdogs and fireworks hangover will be in full effect with Los Angeles Angels fans preparing for a much-anticipated three-game visit from the Boston Red Sox. After handling their business against the Baltimore Orioles, the Halos are ready to introduce the AL East-leading Red Sox to the Shohei Ohtani Show. Boston just eked out a weekend series victory over the Oakland Athletics.
Martin Perez is expected to be the first man on the mound for the Red Sox opposite of Los Angeles’ Jose Suarez.
Red Sox lock down when it matters The Red Sox closed the book on the Oakland Athletics on the backs of Nick Pivetta and the defense on Sunday. There might have been Fourth of July fireworks throughout the city of Boston, but it was nothing but silence on the mound for Pivetta, who fanned 10 batters and helped score a shutout in a seven-inning effort.
And now it’s up to Martin Perez to pick up where Pivetta left off.
The 30-year-old lefty has won two of his last three games against the Kansas City Royals, but he’ll be facing a completely different offensive animal when going head-to-head with the Halos on Monday night. He’s throwing a 4.04 ERA with a 1.43 WHIP on top of a 6-4 record.
The Red Sox might have the more consistent bats, but the Angels are working with some serious firepower at the plate. If Perez isn’t careful, he could get clobbered early and dig a deep hole for Boston’s offense.
However, I wouldn’t expect a team averaging 5.17 runs per game to back down from the challenge of an offensive shootout. This Red Sox team is an offensive monster that currently leads the league in BABIP (.312). The consistency they show is hard to top.
Just imagine, Angels fans Can you imagine how much fun this Angels team is going to be when the heavy-handed bat of Mike Trout joins forces along with Shohei Ohtani?
Whew.
The offense is clearly there for the Angels to cause serious problems throughout the league. When completely healthy, that lineup is ready to compete for a championship today. But there’s only so far you can get with such a struggling pitching rotation.
The Angels have the fourth-worst ERA in the league, along with a troublesome bullpen. At the rate Los Angeles is struggling, they’d need a couple more Trout and Ohtani clones just to compete. Even with Ohtani’s explosive batting power, can he realistically keep pace with a Red Sox team that ranks among the league’s best offenses?
It’s too much for one man to shoulder alone.
He’ll need to continue getting help from guys like Juan Lagares to come away with a victory on Monday and beyond.
Jose Suarez is slated to start at pitcher for the Angels after earning a win over the New York Yankees last week. He’s done well in limited work with a 3-1 record, along with a 1.98 ERA and 1.10 WHIP. He hasn’t given up more than one earned run in a game this season, but that number is about to be tested by the gaudy bats of the Red Sox. We’ll see if he can shut down the plate long enough for Ohtani and company to shine
Red Sox at Angels Monday, at 9:38 PM EST Clear According to Forecast.io, it's expected to be 75° F with a 0% chance of precipitation and 8 MPH wind blowing out in Anaheim at 9:38 PM EST. Hourly Forecasts: Weather.com Forecast.io

Angels Injury Notes: Rendon, Ward, Upton
By Mark Polishuk | July 4, 2021 at 10:22pm CDT
The Angels moved back over the .500 mark with today’s 6-5 walkoff victory over the Orioles, though it may have been a costly win as both Anthony Rendon (left hamstring tightness) and Taylor Ward (right index index finger) made early exits due to potential injuries. The early word from the team training staff is that neither injury seems particularly serious, manager Joe Maddon told The Los Angeles Times’ Jack Harris and other reporters. Rendon and Ward are both questionable for Monday’s game with the Red Sox, but any absence “should not be something elongated. That’s the original diagnosis I’ve been given,” Maddon said.
Rendon has already missed a little over three weeks due to two separate IL stints earlier this season, and also been bothered by a triceps strain. It’s safe to assume these issues have been a factor in Rendon’s underwhelming .240/.329/.382 slash line, though the third baseman has been heating up over the last week. Rendon’s hamstring problem forced him out of the game in the sixth inning, Maddon said, after Rendon attempted to field an infield single from Baltimore’s Austin Hays.
Ward suffered a jammed finger while diving back to a base, according to Maddon. The Angels’ outfield injuries have results in quite a bit of playing time for Ward this season, who has embraced the opportunity by hitting a solid .247/.333/.437 (113 wRC+) with seven homers over 199 PA. The 27-year-old was originally called up from Triple-A on May 5 as part of a series of roster moves that included Rendon’s second IL placement.
The team can hardly afford to be short any more position players, as Justin Upton’s sore back will keep him on the injured list beyond the 10-day minimum. Upton was eligible to be activated today, though Maddon said before the game (to The Orange County Register’s Jeff Fletcher and other reporters) that Upton is “still not quite ready….So we’re just gonna have to make sure that he gets all the proper work in before he gets out there. We need to get him out there, do some defensive work running a little bit, etc.” The Halos manager doesn’t think Upton’s absence will last through the week and into the All-Star break, as Maddon believes Upton could be ready to play “any day now.”

red sox notebook J.D. Martinez, Matt Barnes, and Nathan Eovaldi added to All-Star roster By Julian Benbow Globe Staff,Updated July 4, 2021, 6:11 p.m.
J.D. Martinez, Matt Barnes, and Nathan Eovaldi will join teammates Xander Bogaerts and Rafael Devers in Denver for the All-Star Game on July 13.
Martinez is making his fourth All-Star appearance and his third in four years with the Red Sox. Barnes and Eovaldi are both first-time All-Stars and Eovaldi said he’s glad to be making the trip with some familiar faces.
“It’s awesome,” Eovaldi said. “I’ve never been, to begin with, so it’s going to be nice to have those guys who’ve been there before, be able to follow them, see how they handle everything. “Raffy, Bogey, JD, Barnes — having another pitcher there, too, with Barnes there — it’s going to be good. And everybody was so deserving of making the All-Star Game. I’m kind of at a loss for words. I’m very excited, though. I’m very honored to be in this situation.”
In his 10th season, Eovaldi is having a career year, posting a 9-4 record with a 3.41 ERA and 90 strikeouts in 17 starts. He’s been durable and dependable for the Sox rotation. He considered reaching the All-Star Game later in his career a testament to the work that went into keeping him healthy after dealing with injuries throughout his time in the majors.
“It’s a big thing for me, for sure,” Eovaldi said. “Being able to play in the All-Star Game and represent the Red Sox. For me, it’s a big contribution [from] the training staff, the Red Sox in general. I’ve had a hard time staying healthy in my career, this year I’ve been able to stay healthy, so far. So hopefully we don’t jinx anything there. But you know, the staff has done an amazing, amazing job of keeping me healthy and on the field and taking good care of me.”
Watching the way Eovaldi has gone about his business this season, Barnes said there was no one more deserving.
“There might not be a person on this team that works as hard as that guy,” Barnes said. “He’s in the weight room every day. He’s taking everything seriously — video work, catch work — always trying to get better.”
Despite being second in the American League with 19 saves and having a 2.75 ERA with 61 strikeouts in 36 appearances, Barnes wasn’t sure he would be tapped for the game.
“I knew that there was a chance that I was going to make it, but you’re never really certain. There’s so many good relievers in this game, especially in the American League. You’ve got guys having incredible years that are very deserving of being an All-Star as well.”
He found out during a team meeting Sunday that he made the roster and immediately called his wife and parents to share the news.
“They’re all ecstatic,” Barnes said. “They’re getting flights and hotels and packing their bags and getting ready to head out to Denver as well.”
Martinez’s return to the All-Star Game completes his turnaround from a year ago when he hit a career-low .213 with just seven homers and 59 strikeouts in 54 games. He’s hitting .303 with 17 homers and 56 RBIs this year and considers last season merely a blip.
“What I went through last year in the two months — I always go back to the two months part of it — I look at it like two months,” Martinez said.
In Martinez, Bogaerts, and Devers, the heart of the Sox order will be in Denver.
“It shows you how strong our lineup is,” Martinez said. “To have your 4-5 hitters starting in the American League All-Star Game is awesome. It shows you the strength of it.
“And to get me in there. you have your 3-4-5 guys in there. Just a strong lineup. I’ve been saying it for a while: I don’t doubt this lineup up one bit.” Moreland to IL
The Athletics placed Mitch Moreland on the injured list before the game without disclosing a reason. The team also did not specify if he was on the 10-day IL.
The suggests Moreland’s absence is related to COVID-19.
“I wish I could, but I can’t,” manager Bob Melvin said when asked if he could provide more specifics.
Moreland was in the lineup for Saturday’s game but was replaced by a pinch hitter before his first at-bat. The former Red Sox first baseman has hit .238 with six home runs and 22 RBIs in 57 games for the Athletics.
Oakland replaced Moreland with outfielder Stephen Piscotty, who was activated off the injured list. Ohtani amazes
As the Sox continue their road trip against the Angels, manager Alex Cora had a passing conversation with Devers, both marveling at the way Shohei Ohtani has dominated at the plate and on the mound.
Ohtani hit two home runs Friday against the Orioles, to push his total this season to 30.
“He’s amazing,” Cora said. “It’s amazing. We were talking about it the other day, me and Raffy. We were like, the fact that he has to prepare to hit right, and everything that goes into that — watch video, mechanics, the weight room, all this stuff. And also the fact that he has to prepare to start every five or six days. I can’t even imagine what the routine is and the mental grind. So it’s fun to watch from afar.”
With two homers against the Sox already this season, Cora has enough firsthand experience with the kind of damage Ohtani can do.
“Hopefully, we can keep the ball in the ballpark,” Cora said. Barnes reaches 500
Barnes recorded his 500th career strikeout on the final pitch of the game ... J. D. Martinez has reached base safely in each of his last 22 games, MLB’s second-longest active streak behind teammate Bogaerts (28). He extended his hitting streak to five games and is 7 for 18 with six runs, two doubles, two home runs, nine RBIs, and four walks over that span ... Devers extended his hitting streak to six games ... Devers is batting .391 (9 for 23) with three doubles, a home run, and six RBIs over that span.

Red Sox at Angels Series Preview
A look at this week’s three-game set out in Southern California. By Matt_Collins@MattRyCollins Jul 5, 2021, 12:01pm EDT
SB Nation Blog
Halos Heaven The opponent in one sentence
The Angels have the most exciting player the league has seen in decades, and perhaps ever, but they are still hovering around .500 as their other legendary player sits on the injured list. Record
42-41 Head-to-head record
Red Sox 2, Angels 1 Trend
Up. This series is the last of a run through the American League East for the Angels, and to this point it has gone well. They did drop two of three to Tampa, but that was followed by two of three over the Yankees and a three-game sweep of the Orioles. Overall, L.A. has won six of their last seven games. Pitching Matchups
7/5: Martín Pérez vs. José Suarez, 9:38 PM ET (ESPN for out-of-market)
After improbably serving as arguably the team’s best starting pitcher, Pérez hit a snag in the middle of June with two horrible starts. At that point, it looked like the southpaw was ready to fall back to Earth. That no longer appears to be the case, and it might be time to just say that Pérez is a good back-end starter, because he’s been just that for the better part of two half-seasons since joining the Red Sox. The southpaw is coming off a strong showing against the Royals, allowing just two runs over 5 2⁄3 innings, and he’s pitched to a 1.93 ERA over his last three starts. Pérez had one of his best starts of the season against the Angels back in May, tossing six shutout innings on three hits and four walks with five strikeouts.
Suarez, a 23-year-old lefty, made two starts as an opener last season, but has worked exclusively out of the bullpen so far this year. That said, he did come in and toss 5 1⁄3 innings in relief against the Yankees last weekend, allowing just one run on two hits and a walk with five strikeouts. He’s one of the best pitching prospects in this organization, as he showed off strong stuff in the lower levels of the minors and solid command throughout his time as a pro. As a reliever, Suarez has been leading with a fastball sitting in the low-to-mid-90s to go with a pair of good secondaries with his changeup and curveball.
7/6: Nathan Eovaldi vs. Shohei Ohtani, 9:38 PM ET
We get a matchup of All-Stars in this second game of the series, with Eovaldi taking the mound for the Red Sox side. The righty was named to the first All-Star Game of his career this past weekend, and it was well-deserved. Although he hasn’t been totally consistent all year, he's stepped up when needed and has served as the de facto ace of this Boston rotation. And Eovaldi has been particularly great since the first month of the season, pitching to a 2.61 ERA since the start of May, a stretch covering 10 starts. He did struggle his last time against the Angels, allowing four runs over five innings, but he’s coming off his best start of the season with seven shutout innings against the Royals.
The main attraction for Tuesday, with all due respect to Eovaldi, will be Ohtani. He is the star of baseball right now, and for good reason. We’ll get to his offense just a little bit later, but the two-way player has been tremendous in the Angels rotation as well, serving as the staff ace. Over 12 starts this season, the righty has pitched to a solid 3.60 ERA with some of the best strikeout stuff in all of baseball. That said, there are some control issues, as he’s walking over 13 percent of his opponents this season. Ohtani is also coming off his worst start of the season, not even making it through one inning in the Bronx against the Yankees. The Red Sox will look to give him another tough day in their first meeting with him on the mound this season. The MVP favorite will lean heavily on a mid-90s fastball while also mixing in a splitter, a slider, and a cutter.
7/7: Eduardo Rodriguez vs. Andrew Heaney, 4:07 PM ET (MLB Network for out-of-market)
This has obviously been a very tough season for Rodriguez, but there are real signs right now that things could be turning around. The be fair to the lefty, he had been putting up very good peripherals, but the results just hadn’t followed. That’s not to say it was all bad luck, but it was certainly part of the equation. His last three starts have looked much better, however, pitching to a 2.50 ERA with 21 strikeouts and only three walks over 18 innings. On a recent podcast I named Rodriguez as the player I expected to turn things around compared to his first half, and so far he’s making me look smart. He has another opportunity to do just that in this series finale.
Early in his career with the Angels, Heaney looked like he could turn himself into a mid-rotation mainstay in Southern California for years to come. Unfortunately, he suffered some injuries in the next couple of seasons and has never gotten to that level again. This season, the southpaw is pitching to a 5.40 ERA, missing plenty of bats but suffering lapses in command that have led to plenty of hard contact and home runs. The Red Sox offense should be hunting mistakes, not waiting around but punishing him when the opportunity comes. He had been hitting a hot streak for his first few starts in June, but more recently he’s hit a rough patch, allowing 12 runs over nine innings in his last two starts. Boston will look to make it three in a row on Wednesday afternoon. Heaney will throw a low-90s fastball along with a changeup and a curveball.
Old Friends
José Iglesias was once one of the top prospects in the Red Sox organization based mostly on his all-world defense at shortstop, but he had the misfortune of coming up at the same time as Xander Bogaerts and was traded to Detroit in 2013 in the deal that brought Jake Peavy to Boston. Notable Position Players
Ohtani is starting one of these games, as we mentioned, and he should also make a few appearances at the plate. While he’s been a good pitcher, he’s been a great hitter with the most homers in baseball at 31. He will strike out a little bit more than you’d like, but that’s really the only flaw you’re going to find with his season.
Jared Walsh isn’t the most well-known player on this stars-and-scrubs roster, but he is the second All-Star coming out of Los Angeles. The first baseman is all about the power, hitting 20 homers on the season in the middle of this lineup.
Anthony Rendon has been on and off the injured list all year, and in fact was banged up a little on Sunday. When he has played, the plate discipline has been great but he’s struggled to hit the ball with much authority.
David Fletcher was a favorite for everyone who loves contact-oriented, old-school baseball, but he’s struggled this year as he’s just not getting on base enough to make up for his lack of power.
Iglesias is a defensive specialist, as noted above, but he’s a usable bat as well, typically coming in just a bit below league-average with a contact-oriented approach.
Max Stassi plays good defense behind the plate, and his typically non-existent offense has been impressive as well, thanks in large part to solid power and good batted ball luck.
Phil Gosselin is mostly a platoon bat who will play against left-handed pitchers, and he’s getting by with some extreme batted ball luck. T-Shirt Collection
Take a look at the entire shirt collection from our friends over at BreakingT, including the latest one pictured above.
Taylor Ward is having a quietly solid season, doing well across the board without really standing out in any one area.
Juan Lagares is a glove-first outfielder who has provided almost nothing at the plate this season. Bullpen Snapshot
Raisel Iglesias has been perhaps the best reliever in baseball of late, working around some issues with the long ball to dominate the strike zone. He’s striking batters out, not walking anybody, and he’s going to be tough to beat if the Red Sox are trailing in the ninth.
Steve Cishek has done a wonderful job at keeping the ball in the yard, which has helped him work around his lackluster stuff for a solid season.
Mike Mayers does miss a ton of bats, but he also has lapses in control that have helped make his season more average than good. Injuries
Mike Trout has been out for most of the season, having suffered a severe calf strain in the middle of May. He’ll be back at some point, but the Red Sox will miss the best player in baseball for this series, and the Angels will likely be without him for most, if not all, of this month.
Justin Upton had some back issues that started creeping up at the end of June, and while it isn’t expected to be too long an absence Upton is out for now.
Dexter Fowler tore his ACL shortly after the season began, and he will be out for the entire season.
Franklin Barreto is an infielder who suffered an elbow injury in camp, and eventually he had to undergo Tommy John surgery, which will keep him out for the entire season.
Luke Bard suffered a hip injury before the season and he will be out for the entire season. Weather Forecast
It’s Southern California. The weather is going to be perfect because it always is.

KNOW YOUR OPPONENT:
The ever-underachieving Angels swept the Orioles over the weekend to get back to above .500 with a 42-41 record that is good for fourth place in the American League West. They trail the division-leading Astros by nine games and are 5 ½ games out of a wild-card spot
The Halos have been without superstar Mike Trout since May 18 with a calf strain and have relied on two-way phenom Shohei Ohtani, who leads baseball with 31 home runs and also has posted a 3.60 ERA and recorded 80 strikeouts in 60 innings on the mound. Ohtani, Trout and first baseman Jared Walsh all made the All-Star team for the Angels; Ohtani became the first player ever to make the team as both a pitcher and position player. Ohtani will pitch Tuesday night against the Red Sox.
Offensively, the Angels have been one of the best clubs in baseball, ranking fifth in OPS (.758), fourth in average (.255) and fifth in home runs (115). Pitching, on the other hand, has been a major issue. Los Angeles ranks 26th in team ERA (5.01 and 22nd in opponent average (.249) while giving up the sixth-most homers in baseball (107).
PITCHING PROBABLES:
Monday, 9:38 p.m. ET -- LHP Martín Pérez (6-4, 4.04 ERA) vs. LHP José Suarez (3-1, 1.98 ERA)
Tuesday, 9:38 p.m. ET -- RHP Nathan Eovaldi (9-4, 3.41 ERA) vs. RHP Shohei Ohtani (3-1, 3.60 ERA)
Wednesday, 4:07 p.m. ET -- LHP Eduardo Rodriguez (6-4, 5.42 ERA) vs. LHP Andrew Heaney (4-6, 5.40 ERA)
THREE SOX TO WATCH:
Matt Barnes
Barnes is a first-time All-Star, but he has not been as sharp over his last 12 outings. Since June 6, he owns a 3.09 ERA while allowing 11 hits and walking five batters in 11 ⅔ innings. He is likely unavailable Monday after throwing 33 pitches in the ninth inning of Sunday’s 1-0 win.
Eduardo Rodriguez
Rodriguez was dominant Friday night in Oakland, allowing just one hit in six scoreless innings. The lefty now has a 2.50 ERA in his last three starts and has clearly turned a corner after a brutal stretch. He will close out his first half Wednesday afternoon in a matchup against lefty Andrew Heaney.
Christian Arroyo
Arroyo is set to return from the injured list Monday night for the series opener in Anaheim after missing two weeks with a right knee contusion he suffered in a collision with Kiké Hernández on June 20 in Kansas City.
SERIES NOTES:
The Red Sox have the most All-Stars of any team in baseball (5). Pitchers Matt Barnes and Nathan Eovaldi, infielders Xander Bogaerts and Rafael Devers and designated hitter J.D. Martinez will represent the club in Denver on July 13. The Sox took two of three from the Angels at Fenway Park from May 14-16. The clubs did not face each other in the shortened 2020 season; in 2019, the Sox went 4-3 against the Halos, splitting a four-game set at Fenway in August and then taking two of three in Anaheim over Labor Day weekend. The Red Sox went 17-10 (.630) in April, 15-11 (.577) in May, and 18-10 (.643) in June. The only other teams to win 15+ games in each of those months were the Athletics, Dodgers, Giants, and Padres. The Sox are closing out the first half by playing 19 games in 20 days (6/22-7/11). They are in a stretch of 16 consecutive days with a game (10-3 so far). Boston is 10-14 (.417) vs. AL West teams and 43-18 (.705) against all others. Lefty reliever Josh Taylor has made 25 consecutive scoreless appearances (20 ⅓ innings), MLB’s longest streak of 2021. The Red Sox’ longest losing streak of the season is three games (three times)...They are one of only two teams without a losing streak of 4+ games (the Mets are the other).
UP NEXT:
The Red Sox will finish the first half of the season with three home games against the Phillies. Here’s what’s next:
Thu. July 8 -- OFF DAY
Fri. July 9 - Sun. July 11 -- @ Phillies (3)
Mon. July 12 - Wed. July 14 -- ALL-STAR BREAK
