Boston Red Sox’s Eduardo Rodriguez might miss start after leaving game with migraine symptoms: ‘You’ve got to take care of players’ Updated 11:25 PM; Today 11:25 PM
By Chris Cotillo | ccotillo@MassLive.com
BOSTON -- For Red Sox manager Alex Cora, removing starter Eduardo Rodriguez in the second inning of Friday’s game due to migraine symptoms was a no-brainer.
After giving up an RBI double to Brett Gardner in the second, Rodriguez sunk into a crouch on the mound before catcher Christian Vázquez, pitching coach Dave Bush and -- eventually -- Cora and team trainers ran out to see what was wrong. The lefty wasn’t injured but was dealing with a headache significant enough to make it hard for him to concentrate while pitching.
Considering Rodriguez had missed the entire 2020 season due to myocarditis (heart inflammation) and had dealt with arm fatigue at the end of spring training, Cora was initially worried.
“The way (Vàzquez) reacted, I was like, ‘There’s something going on.’ I thought it was an injury,” Cora said. “I went out there and talked to him and he was telling me how he felt and what was going on. (I told him) ‘Just take a deep breath and we’ll take you out of the game.’”
After Rodriguez’s first inning, Cora noticed Rodriguez was sitting in the corner of the dugout alone -- a significant departure from how the talkative lefty usually acts during his outings. The migraine diagnosis came as somewhat of a relief.
“The way he was acting and then when they told me what it was and how he felt on the mound, that’s where I was like, ‘Ok, that’s why he’s so different today,’” Cora said.
Cora said there is no known correlation between Rodriguez’s heart issues and Friday’s episode, though the lefty’s medical history will cause the Red Sox to proceed with caution in the coming days. The hope at this point is that Rodriguez won’t miss his next scheduled start Wednesday against the Blue Jays, but how Rodriguez reacts in the coming days will determine the club’s course.
“That’s what we do. You’ve got to take care of players,” Cora said. “That’s the most important thing. Now, we’ve just got to see how he reacts tonight, how he feels tomorrow and we’ll go from there. If he has to miss a start, he misses it. (Expletive), this guy didn’t pitch last year with a heart problem so we’ve got to be very careful with him.”

Rafael Devers joins Ted Williams, Tony Conigliaro as only Boston Red Sox to hit 100 homers before age 25: ‘It’s a true honor’ Updated 11:44 PM; Today 11:44 PM
By Chris Cotillo | ccotillo@MassLive.com
BOSTON -- On Friday night, Red Sox third baseman Rafael Devers guaranteed that he will forever be mentioned in the same sentence as two Red Sox legends.
With his second homer in Boston’s 6-2 win over the Yankees, Devers became the third player in franchise history to hit 100 home runs before turning 25, joining Ted Williams and Tony Conigliaro. Though Devers was born decades after those players suited up, he still appreciated the magnitude of his feat.
“It’s a true honor,” Devers said through translator Bryan Almonte. “Obviously, those are two legends of this organization and to be mentioned in the same sentence is really special. Obviously, it’s something I would have never thought of but it feels really good to be able to be on that list as well now.”
On Friday, the Red Sox had trouble getting much going offensively against Yankees ace Gerrit Cole until Devers stepped up to the plate in the fifth. After Xander Bogaerts had tied the game, 1-1, with a sacrifice fly, Devers took Cole deep over the Monster, turning around a 99.2 mph fastball to give his team the lead.
Two innings later, with Boston still clinging to a two-run lead, Devers broke things open. This time it was a three-run shot to center field off reliever Nestor Cortes to secure a five-RBI game and the second multi-homer affair of the season for Devers.
Devers’ second homer was his 100th.
“I’m extremely happy,” Devers said. “Obviously, this is the organization that gave me the opportunity to be a big-league ballplayer and that means a lot to me.”
On a night when manager Alex Cora praised his team for winning a “total team effort” against their rivals, Devers stood out as a star.
“He’s one of our best players,” Cora said. “On a nightly basis, we’ve got different guys who show up and they do things. He’s one of the best third basemen in the big leagues and he’s only 24.”

Yankees @ Red Sox Saturday, 24th July 2021 4pm @ Fenway
Jameson Taillon 5-4/4.60
Jameson Taillon picked up his fifth victory of the season on Sunday night, firing 5 1/3 innings of scoreless baseball against the Red Sox. The 29-year-old hurler allowed just four hits and two walks on the night while striking out three. He generated 12 whiffs on the night -- seven on his fastball -- and posted a CSW of 23 percent. He has now pitched well in three straight starts, lowering his ERA to 4.60 on the season.
Nasty Nate 9-5/3.57
Nathan Eovaldi pitched well in a no-decision against the Yankees on Saturday night, allowing one run on two hits over five strong innings. The right-hander piled up seven strikeouts on the night while issuing just one base on balls. The only run that he allowed came on an RBI single by DJ LeMahieu in the fifth inning. Eovaldi needed 94 pitches (66 strikes) to complete five innings in this one. He generated 13 swings and misses in the game and posted a CSW of 37 percent. The All-Star right-hander will carry a 3.57 ERA and 1.20 WHIP into a rematch against the Yankees.
Red Sox seek 10th season win over rival Yankees According to STATS
Nathan Eovaldi will look to pitch the Boston Red Sox to yet another series victory against the rival Yankees as Boston hosts New York in the third of a four-game set Saturday afternoon.
The Red Sox improved to 9-2 against the Yankees this season with a 6-2 victory Friday. New York earned its first two wins in 2021 over the Red Sox at home last weekend and had won four straight overall before dropping back-to-back games in Boston.
"(It's) very frustrating. We understand where we are in the season and the calendar. We know how important it is that we play really well," Yankees manager Aaron Boone said. "I don't think anything's changed there -- I still feel like we're playing really well."
Boston earned its 31st come-from-behind win after erasing a 1-0 deficit with a three-run fifth that included Rafael Devers' go-ahead two-run homer. Devers added a three-run blast in the seventh to cap his five-RBI night.
"We didn't win the game early on, but we were winning innings and that's what you've got to do against (teams) like that," Red Sox manager Alex Cora said. "Win every pitch, (their) pitch count was getting up and then we put the big swing."
Eovaldi (9-5, 3.57 ERA) will face his former team for the third time in five starts. The All-Star right-hander gave up a run on two hits with seven strikeouts over five innings in a 3-1 loss at New York last Saturday, but he didn't figure in the decision.
In his June 26 home start against the Yankees, Eovaldi allowed one run on seven hits while walking none and striking out six over 7 2/3 innings in a 4-2 win.
Eovaldi, who pitched two seasons with New York from 2015-16, is 3-2 with a 2.88 ERA in 12 career appearances (nine starts) against the Yankees.
The Yankees will counter with right-hander Jameson Taillon (5-4, 4.60) on the mound.
Taillon has performed well in two starts against the Red Sox this season, posting a 1-0 record and giving up three earned runs over 10 2/3 innings.
In New York's 9-1 rout of Boston last Sunday, Taillon tossed 5 1/3 scoreless innings while allowing four hits and two walks with three strikeouts. He allowed three runs on six hits with a walk and three punchouts over 5 1/3 innings in a 7-3 loss to Boston on June 5.
Over three career starts against the Red Sox, Taillon has gone 1-0 with a 1.53 ERA.
DJ LeMahieu remains a bright spot for the Yankees as the All-Star second baseman went 1-for-5 on Friday to extend his major league-leading on-base streak to 33 games.
The status of New York catcher Gary Sanchez is up in the air after he exited Friday's game following the fifth inning with a back injury. Boone said Sanchez received treatment after the game and would be a game-day decision.

Peter Gammons @pgammo · 2h It was impossible not to get up @4 :30 am and rewatch the classic 5th inning Cole--who was brilliant--vs. Devers matchup, 100.1 MPH, Carboesque shot. Devers has most(4) HR vs. 99+, and in this case, Cole is no thrower, he can really pitch.
It reminded me o the George Brett-Goose Gossage matchup that decided the '80 ALCS. Gossage had popped up Yaz to end '78 game, and we discussed that there are moments in sports when it isn't about winners and "losers," just one greatness wins out

Pete Abraham @peteabe A migraine for Rodriguez. So that's a relief. Happy about that. We're too thin to lose anyone. Huge relief. It didn't look good initially.
We've been very fortunate when it comes to our starting pitchers health.

Amazing. Sawamura goes down, Valdez comes up, ERod goes down in the 1st, and Valdez strikes out 7 Yankees in 3 innings. Here's a guy wondering if/when he gets another shot, and then has a game like this? Devers' 2 huge homeruns notwithstanding, Valdez was the MVP of last night's game, IMO. It's not just that he pitched so great, but the fact that he gave us 3 innings as well. Honorable mention to Rios as well.
That said, Rafael Freakin' Devers!

I didn't get up at 4:30 this morning to re-watch the game, but I have done it on another occasion. Being able to beat the Yankees with their ace on the mound is always a great thing, needless to say. No letting up today, Red Sox.

Mike Kay can go to hell
Michael Kay rips Red Sox fans for supposedly being quiet at Fenway Park Current Time 0:00 / Duration 2:15
By Alex Reimer 2 hours ago
Can Michael Kay hear alright?
During Thursday’s night’s YES broadcast of the Red Sox’s 5-4 win over the Yankees, the longtime play-by-play man said the Fenway Faithful has a reputation for being … quiet.
Really?
“Now, the Red Sox crowd is very quiet,” Kay said. “Players that have played for the Red Sox — and I’ve spoken with them — they say the difference between a Red Sox crowd and a Yankee crowd is, the Yankee crowd at Yankee Stadium will get loud to try and spur the team on to do something. And the Red Sox crowd reacts to something good. And they’re being shut out right now, so it’s kind of a quiet situation at Fenway Park.
“That’s long been the scouting report on the Red Sox crowd — not a knock on them. They’re reactive, rather than being proactive.”
Kay’s hypothesis hasn’t held up the last two nights. On Thursday, the Red Sox stormed back with a 5-4 extra-inning win. The crowd seemed plenty loud when Brooks Kriske couldn’t find the plate in the 10th.
Fenway Park was also loud Friday, but then again, Rafael Devers homered twice and knocked in five runs Friday.
I guess the Fenway crowd was just reacting to his greatness. Shame on them.
