Red Sox @ Rays Friday, 30th July 2021 7pm @ The Trop
Perez 7-6/4.18
Martín Pérez was charged with three runs over six innings on Sunday in a no-decision against the Yankees. Pérez coughed up six hits, including a solo homer to Rougned Odor in the sixth inning. He racked up six strikeouts and only handed out a pair of free passes. The soft-tossing 30-year-old southpaw holds an underwhelming 4.18 ERA, 1.47 WHIP and 80/32 K/BB ratio across 94 2/3 innings (20 starts) this season.
Fleming 7-5/4.07
Josh Fleming allowed three runs in four innings in his start on Friday against the Rays, but didn't qualify for a decision. All three runs allowed came on a homer given up to Jose Ramirez. The southpaw didn't allow any other runs, but it was another middling effort that saw him give up six hits, walk two and strike out only one.
After deadline, Red Sox and Rays tangle in Tampa
The front offices of the Boston Red Sox and Tampa Bay Rays will spend most of Friday pondering various trade scenarios.
Then, three hours after the deadline, the Red Sox visit the Rays for the opener of a three-game series in St. Petersburg, Fla., between the top two teams in the AL East who will see each other often over the final two months.
Friday is the seventh meeting of the 19-game season series, and the Red Sox are 4-2 so far. Boston won the first four meetings before the Rays got a pair of home wins, June 23-24.
The last meeting gave the Rays a half-game lead in the division, and they held the lead for two more days. Tampa Bay spent four days trailing by 4 1/2 games but tied the Red Sox last Saturday before losing three straight.
The Rays enter the series trailing by 1 1/2 games after impressively snapping a three-game skid that saw them score just six times. On Thursday, Tampa Bay cruised to a 14-0 win over the visiting New York Yankees; the Rays took a four-run lead four batters in and scored 10 times in the sixth inning.
"It's just kind of incredible, laughable in a good way," Tampa Bay's Austin Meadows said. "For us to do that just shows how good we are, how good we can be."
Meadows homered twice and drove in five runs while Brett Phillips also hit his first career grand slam and Ji-Man Choi also connected.
"The energy is up," Phillips said. "I feel like (after) a game like that, we've got some momentum going into the next series with Boston coming into town."
Meadows started the past two games at designated hitter because Nelson Cruz was held out of the starting lineup due to a bruised left foot. Cruz could return Friday, when the Rays may also add some relievers after trading Diego Castillo to the Seattle Mariners and placing Pete Fairbanks on the injured list with right shoulder inflammation.
While Tampa Bay is coming off one of its best games of the season, the Red Sox are coming off one of their worst. Besides seeing the rival Yankees acquire power hitters Joey Gallo and Anthony Rizzo, the Red Sox dropped a 13-1 decision to the Toronto Blue Jays on Thursday. They scored six times in that series after taking three of four from New York last weekend.
After losing out on Rizzo, the Red Sox acquired Kyle Schwarber from the Washington Nationals. Schwarber has been on the injured list since July 3 due to a strained right hamstring. Before getting hurt, he batted .253 with 25 homers and 53 RBIs.
He hit 16 homers in June, when Washington won 19 of 28 games. The Red Sox are hoping he fits in as another left-handed bat with Rafael Devers, who missed Thursday's game with left quad soreness and is day-to-day.
The Red Sox also may add a starting pitcher; Chris Sale is close to returning from Tommy John surgery.
"It's not how big (the moves are), it's just how smart," Boston manager Alex Cora said. "We believe good baseball moves help good baseball teams. We'll see what happens."
The Rays did not officially announce their starting pitching plans, but Josh Fleming (7-5, 4.07 ERA) is expected to appear either as the starter or the bulk guy following an opener.
Fleming has allowed 10 runs and 14 hits over 8 1/3 innings in his past two outings, July 17 at Atlanta and last Friday at Cleveland.
Fleming's only previous appearance against Boston occurred Sept. 10 as a starter when he allowed three runs on six hits and took a no-decision in a 4-3 loss.
Martin Perez (7-6, 4.18), who is 3-2 with a 3.55 ERA over his past seven starts, gets the call for Boston. On Sunday, he took a no-decision when he allowed three runs on six hits in six innings as the Red Sox erased a four-run deficit to beat the Yankees.
The left-hander is 2-5 with a 5.61 ERA in 14 career appearances (12 starts) against the Rays.

Injuries & Moves: Sox deal, DFA Workman 1:48 AM ADT
July 29: OF Kyle Schwarber acquired from Nationals for Minor League RHP Aldo Ramirez In Schwarber, the Red Sox get the big lefty bat they’ve been looking for. Schwarber, 28, has played in 72 games with the Nationals this season, all in left field. The left-handed batter has hit .253 (67-for-265) with 25 home runs and a .910 OPS, and in 21 games since June 12 he has batted .338 (26-for-77) with 16 home runs. Schwarber is currently on the injured list with a right hamstring strain suffered on July 2, and it’s unclear when he will be ready to make his Boston debut.
July 29: RHP Brandon Workman designated for assignment To make room for Schwarber on the 40-man roster, the Red Sox designated veteran reliever Workman for assignment. Part of Boston’s World Series championship squads of 2013 and ’18, the Red Sox signed Workman to a Minor League deal in May after the Cubs released him. Workman struggled in his second stint for Boston, and gave up seven hits and four runs over two innings in Thursday’s 13-1 loss to Toronto.
3B Rafael Devers (left quad tightness) Expected return: Friday or Saturday Devers was taken out of Game 2 of the July 28 doubleheader with left quad soreness. He was already supposed to be out of the lineup on Thursday for a regular maintenance day. Will Devers be able to start Friday? “I just saw him, he’s going to get treatment right now,” said Red Sox manager Alex Cora. “The goal is for him to start tomorrow but if he can’t then we’ll push him back.” (Last updated: July 29)
RHP Hirokazu Sawamura (right tricep inflammation) Expected return: Friday The key setup man fired a 1-2-3 first inning for Triple-A Worcester on Wednesday in what should be a one-and-done rehab assignment. Of Sawamura’s 13 pitches against Buffalo, he threw nine strikes. He got one strikeout. All systems appear to be go for Sawamura to be activated for the start of the series against the Rays on Friday.
“He felt good. We haven't made a decision yet, but it seems everything is pointing that he'll be with us in Tampa,” said manager Alex Cora. (Last updated: July 29)

Injuries & Roster Moves: Castillo dealt 1:53 AM ADT
ROSTER MOVES
July 29: Acquired RHP JT Chargois and Minor League INF Austin Shenton from the Mariners for RHP Diego Castillo In a surprising move, the Rays dealt high-leverage reliever Castillo to Seattle and received reliever Chargois and infield prospect Shenton, now No. 22 in their system, from the Mariners. The deal came at an unexpected time, specifically on the same day fellow high-leverage reliever Pete Fairbanks joined a bunch of other key bullpen arms on the injured list, but Rays general manager Erik Neander’s reasoning for the move was quite clear.
“There’s a difference in track record, what’s behind [Chargois and Castillo], but when we’re looking at what’s ahead of JT, we have a lot of confidence that he’s going to be a big part of this group moving forward,” Neander said on a conference call with reporters shortly after the deal became official. “The price for taking on the risk of the different backstory and the history is why we got Shenton, whom we’re high on.”
Expect Chargois to play an important part in a bullpen that, the Rays hope, will soon see the return of Fairbanks, Collin McHugh, J.P. Feyereisen, Ryan Thompson and, at some point in August, Nick Anderson.
July 29: Placed RHP Pete Fairbanks (right shoulder inflammation) on the 10-day injured list Fairbanks exited the Rays’ 3-1 loss against the Yankees on Wednesday due to a shoulder injury and went on the 10-day IL the next morning. The high-leverage reliever said he felt soreness throughout his right shoulder, especially after throwing a slider to Aaron Judge, and recognized it wouldn’t be wise to continue pitching. Fairbanks was scheduled for an MRI on Thursday, but his initial expectation was that the injury wasn’t as severe as the strained rotator cuff that forced him to miss 25 games earlier this season. The Rays now have 14 pitchers on the injured list.
July 29: Recalled RHP Chris Mazza from Triple-A Durham Needing an arm to replace the injured Pete Fairbanks, the Rays called up Mazza for his sixth stint with the big league club. He has posted a 3.65 ERA over his last seven outings with the Rays after allowing six runs, all earned, in his Tampa Bay debut. The right-hander was 4-0 with a 2.66 ERA and 32 strikeouts in 23 2/3 innings over 18 outings for Durham this season.

RED SOX NOTEBOOK Tanner Houck returned to Worcester, but for a limited engagement By Julian McWilliams Globe Staff,Updated July 29, 2021, 7:58 p.m.
The Red Sox optioned Tanner Houck to Triple A Worcester following Wednesday’s doubleheader against the Blue Jays. Houck tossed four innings in the second game, striking out seven while yielding just a run on two hits.
Houck has pitched well for the Sox this season, boasting a 2.45 ERA and 30 strikeouts across 22 innings. Manager Alex Cora said Houck is still a part of the big-league fold going forward, and will pitch in the split doubleheader in Toronto next Saturday at the Rogers Centre.
“For now it makes sense to go somewhere else,” Cora said before the 13-1 loss Thursday, the Sox splitting four games with the Jays. “He’s gonna be a big part of what we’re trying to accomplish — he’s a big part of it already. It just happens that roster-wise, where we’re at right now in the upcoming days, this is where we are going.”
That meant Connor Wong, the 27th man on the roster for the doubleheader, remained with the team.
Houck will go through his usual progression, pitching either Monday or Tuesday for Worcester before making his start Saturday. Hunter Renfroe in a rut
Hunter Renfroe finished June hitting .272 with an .807 OPS for the season. That is down to .255 after an 0 for 3 Thursday, Renfroe hitting just .197 (15 for 76) with a .623 OPS in 22 games this month.
“I think the swing maybe got a little bigger than when he was really on fire and in that groove,” hitting coach Tim Hyers said. “He might be a little tired and coming out of his legs a little bit and not using the whole field like he was. But it happens. I think every hitter goes through periods where they hit that funk and that wall, and everything he tries isn’t working right now.”
Hyers noted pitchers have been attacking Renfroe effectively by utilizing tunneling — multiple pitches to the same spot, but with different movement.
A changeup at the bottom of the zone from a lefthander, for instance, might look like a fastball, but instead it darts away from a righty at the last minute. A pitcher could then throw a fastball to that same spot. It might look like a changeup out of the hand, but instead, it freezes up the hitter before he can make a decision to swing.
Renfroe, a utility player for much of his career, could also be going through some mental fatigue, Hyers said.
“We’re in a tough stretch right now against some pretty good arms,” he added. “But Hunter is sharp, he’s strong. A couple of good swings and he’ll be right back on track.” No Rafael Devers for now
Rafael Devers (left quad tightness) was out of the lineup Thursday. The plan is still for him to play Friday against the Rays, but Cora said they will stay away from him if need be . . . Hirokazu Sawamura (right triceps inflammation) threw a clean inning for Worcester on Wednesday and will likely join the team in St. Petersburg . . . Pitching matchups for Tropicana Field are Martín Pérez against Josh Fleming on Friday, Nate Eovaldi vs. Ryan Yarbrough on Saturday, and Nick Pivetta (who threw 6⅔ no-hit innings in Boston’s last visit to the Trop on June 24) vs. Shane McClanahan on Sunday . . . Marwin Gonzalez, on the injured list since July 16 with a right hamstring strain, likely will go on a rehab assignment this weekend and could possibly rejoin the team for its series in Detroit beginning Tuesday.

Red Sox at Rays Series Preview
A look at this weekend’s huge three-game set against the Rays. By HPJoker Jul 30, 2021, 1:01pm EDT
SB Nation Blog
DRays Bay The Opponent in one sentence
The Rays are once again among the top teams in all of baseball, relying on depth as usual but also a whole lot of offense to keep pace with Boston atop this division. Record
61-42 Head-to-Head Record
Red Sox 4, Rays 2 Trend
Up. They may have lost two of three to the Yankees, but they’re 8-5 in the second half and are coming off a 14-0 win. Pitching Matchups
7/30: Martín Pérez vs. Josh Fleming, 7:10 PM ET
Pérez has had a rough go of it in July. He’s allowed a .937 OPS but has escaped with only a 4.74 ERA. I thought he got hosed in his July 18th start against the Yankees, getting yanked after giving up a hit and run single, a bunt single, and a single off weak contact, but giving up four homers in 19 innings isn’t getting the job done.
Josh Fleming is a throwback lefty. Low strikeout, low whiff, sinker/changeup guy. His groundball rate is well north of 50 percent, he doesn’t throw hard, and he features a cutter to play off his sinker. It’s boring, but novel.
7/31: Nathan Eovaldi vs. Ryan Yarbrough, 6:10 PM ET
Eovaldi has continued his stellar season. It’s not a profile that you’d think would lend itself to limiting homers, but he’s second in baseball in HR/9 and HR/FB. His ability to keep the ball in the yard while pounding the zone makes him a favorite amongst older metrics like FIP, but he’s a favorite among the statcast metrics, too. There’s a lot of red on his Statcast page, meaning he’s limiting hard contact. He’s not one of the best pitchers in baseball, but he’s a solid mid-rotation force as long as he stays healthy.
Yarbrough has gotten rocked by Boston this year. He’s given up seven runs in 14 innings. A soft-tossing lefty sounds like the best matchup imaginable for this team loaded with right-handed power hitters.
8/1: Nick Pivetta vs. Shane McClanahan, 7:08 PM ET
Pivetta has some of the widest range of probable outcomes from game to game as any other starter in baseball. Lately, those outcomes have been bad. In his past three starts he has an ERA over 7, giving up a litany of hard contact. Granted, the Jays are tough opponents but he’s going to be pitching against good teams down the stretch and possibly in the playoffs, so he needs to buckle up. The Rays might be a good team for him to reset. The last time he faced them he no-hit them for 6.2 innings before being pulled after 100 pitches.
Shane McClanahan’s rookie season has been up and down but there’s a lot of promise in his arm. With the way baseball is moving with starters throwing fewer and fewer innings and a larger emphasis on bullpens, two pitch starters like McClanahan have a better shot at succeeding in a rotation, particularly with a progressive organization like the Rays that know how to utilize a player like this. It’s an electric fastball/slider combination with a change and curve that flash. The command is inconsistent as is the shape of the slider. He will be fun to watch. Old Friends
Jeffrey Springs left the Red Sox and became a serviceable reliever. Somehow he’s giving up 1.9 HR/9 and has an expected ERA in the low 3’s.
Chris Mazza is an up and down guy for the Rays. With their laundry list of bullpen injuries he’s been called up.
Jalen Beeks is recovering from Tommy John surgery.
Collin McHugh is on the IL with vague “arm fatigue” but has been incredible while on the mound in a multiinning role. Notable Position Players
Brandon Lowe has had himself a nice little career so far and he’s kept it up, virtually coping his 2019 line minus 50 points of batting average that he’s made up for with a massive jump in walk rate. He leads the team in home runs with 22.
Ji-Man Choi can do the splits. He can also get on base. He’s not a huge power threat, but he gets on base.
Nelson Cruz is the newest offensive acquisition. He’s had the second half of a Hall of Fame career and hasn’t shown any signs of slowing down at 41.
Austin Meadows hasn’t found the success he enjoyed in 2019, a season that saw him get down ballot MVP votes, but he’s been a productive left fielder.
Randy Arozarena has not seen the monstrous success he found last year. The 26 year old has had an up and down season. Right now he’s going through one of his up phases, having hit for a 1.127 OPS the last week.
Joey Wendle doesn’t really show off much patience, but he does make good contact on a consistent basis which has helped to stay safely above league-average at the plate this year.
Wander Franco has struggled to produce at the Major League level his first time through the league. This isn’t unexpected. For as advanced a prospect Franco was, the gap between AAA pitching and MLB pitching has never been larger and it often takes time for prospects to adjust. He’s not striking out a ton, which is a good sign for him.
Mike Zunino is having a weird season. He’s hitting below .200, on basing below .300, but his massive power makes him one of the best offensive catchers in baseball. His .314 ISO is sixth in baseball amongst hitters with 230 or more plate appearnaces, sandwiched between new Red Sox Kyle Schwarber and Ronald Acuna Jr.
Kevin Kiermaier is still a wunderkind out in center field. He can’t hit worth a lick but that’s why he’s hitting 9th. Bullpen Snapshot
Andrew Kittredge is the new closer after the Rays dealt Diego Castillo yesterday. The All-Star has the 3rd best reliever ERA in baseball behind Craig Kimbrel and Kendall Graveman.
Jeffrey Springs left the Sox and became a good reliever through Rays magic. He strikes out a ton of guys but gives up a bunch of homers. T-Shirt Collection
Take a look at the entire shirt collection from our friends over at BreakingT, including the latest one pictured above.
Matt Wisler leads all of baseball in slider frequency, throwing it 90% of the time. After starting the season in San Francisco, the former top 100 prospect has thrown up an ERA in the low 2’s. Injuries
Chris Archer has been shelved since early April with forearm tightness. He started a rehab assignment on July 12 and is making his next rehab appearance August 1.
Yonny Chirinos had Tommy John surgery in August of last year. He’ll miss the remainder of the season.
Tyler Glasnow suffered a partially torn UCL shortly after the sticky stuff got banned. He’s been trying to rehab it and was playing catch a little over a week ago.
Nick Anderson has been out with a partially torn UCL since late March. He started his rehab assignment on July 23 in rookie ball and should return to the bigs in August.
Jalen Beeks blew his elbow last September and won’t return this season.
Oliver Drake suffered a flexor strain last October. He was set to begin a rehab assignment on July 13th but suffered a setback.
Pete Fairbanks was put on the 10-day IL yesterday with shoulder inflammation. There is no timetable for his return.
Tommy Hunter, who was just traded to the Rays in the Rich Hill deal, has been on the IL with a back injury since mid-May and may not return this season.
Collin McHugh was placed on the 10-day IL on July 22 with “arm fatigue”. I don’t know what this means or when he’ll be back, but he’ll be eligible to come off the IL on August 1st.
Colin Poche had Tommy John surgery in late July of 2020. It was announced yesterday that he will be sidelined for the remainder of the season.
Cody Reed is out for the season after having a thoracic outlet syndrome decompression procedure. He should pitch next year.
Chaz Roe is out for the season after undergoing shoulder surgery in late June.
Ryan Thompson has been out since late June with shoulder inflammation. Kevin Cash said that he is “finally making some good strides,” yesterday.
J.P. Feyereisen was placed on the 10-day IL with shoulder discomfort last week. There was no structural damage but he should be staying on the IL longer than the minimum. Weather Forecast
Room temperature!

Marwin Gonzalez (right hamstring) starting a rehab assignment tonight at Triple-A Worcester.

Cora said Schwarber 'can play left field. We know that.'
'He's actually better than what people think. Obviously, the first base thing, we're going to work with him.' #RedSox
