Trent Thornton will serve as the Blue Jays' 27th man for Saturday's doubleheader against the Red Sox.
Thornton will give the Blue Jays some length out of the bullpen in case either Robbie Ray or José Berríos run into trouble. He'll likely head back to Triple-A Buffalo at the conclusion of the twin-bill.

Doubt they do it seeing they want to win these games but if I was the Jays today I am plunking Kiki right off the bat for that chicken shit crap Robles pulled off last night.

Blue Jays Place Tim Mayza On 10-Day Injured List, Option Ryan Borucki
By TC Zencka | August 7, 2021 at 2:26pm CDT
The Blue Jays placed southpaw Tim Mayza on the injured list with left elbow inflammation while optioning Ryan Borucki to Triple-A. Patrick Murphy and Kirby Snead have been recalled to take their roster spots, per Sportsnet’s Shi Davidi (via Twitter).
The Athletic’s Kaitlyn McGrath adds the somewhat amazing fact that every member of the Jays opening day pitching staff has been optioned, released, or placed on the injured list at some point this season. Despite zero pitchers who have been effective and healthy for the entire season, the Jays are now just 6.5 games out of first and 2.5 games out of a wild card spot.
Mayza has been that source of reliability out of the pen for the Jays with a 3.75 ERA/3.08 FIP in 36 innings spanning 44 games. He’s particularly effective against same-handed hitters, who are slashing just .207/.246/.207 against him.
Snead, 26, will try to take on some of Mayza’s responsibilities in his absence. Snead has just two big league appearances, though he’s pitched to a 1.89 ERA in 33 1/3 innings in Triple-A this season.
Borucki might have taken on some of that task, but he’s struggled to a 5.12 ERA/5.18 FIP across 20 outings. He gave up two runs on two hits and a walk in yesterday’s game against the Red Sox.

Kaitlyn McGrath @kaitlyncmcgrath · 1h From #BlueJays game notes: today marks the first split doubleheader ever at Rogers Centre. It's only the 4th doubleheader here all-time. Toronto has swept all three. I was here at the last one, April 17, 2018. vs. KC after ice fell through the roof the day before. Good times.
Dear Blue Jays fans at Rogers Centre today:
**YOU ARE REQUIRED TO WEAR A MASK ON ROGERS CENTRE PROPERTY INCLUDING IN YOUR SEATS.**
The only time you are permitted to take off your mask is when you are eating and drinking.
Most of you seem to be breaking the rules. #BlueJays

Bill Koch @billkoch25 · 5m Alex Verdugo ruled safe at first. The Blue Jays have lost their challenge.
Can't say I've seen a play like that before. Strange one. Sloppy footwork from Lourdes Gurriel Jr., and Verdugo didn't touch the bag on his first pass.
#RedSox extend this 6th inning.
Xander Bogaerts with a foul pop to first. The #RedSox strand a pair. It remains 0-0 to the bottom of the 6th.

Matt Barnes allows walkoff homer to Marcus Semien, Boston Red Sox lose 1-0 after Nick Pivetta allowed just 1 hit Updated 5:06 PM; Today 5:05 PM
By Christopher Smith | csmith@masslive.com
Nick Pivetta dominated for the Red Sox. He didn’t allow a hit until Corey Dickerson singled with two outs in the fifth inning. The righty gave up just one hit and one walk while striking out five in 6 scoreless innings.
The problem though: Boston couldn’t score against Blue Jays starter Robbie Ray.
Matt Barnes gave up a walkoff homer to Marcus Semien on the first pitch the seventh inning. The Red Sox lost 1-0 to the Blue Jays in Game 1 of the seven-inning doubleheader.
Ray also tossed 6 scoreless innings, allowing just two hits and two walks while striking out five.
Boston had its opportunities.
Kiké Hernández led off the game with a walk but the Red Sox were unable to take advantage. Both Alex Verdugo and Xander Bogaerts flied out. Rafael Devers struck out swinging.
Kevin Plawecki singled with one out in the fifth, marking Boston’s first hit. But Christian Vázquez grounded into a double play to end the inning.
Boston had a perfect opportunity in the sixth when Nos. 8 and 9 hitters Bobby Dalbec and Jonathan Araúz reached with no outs. Dalbec walked and Araúz singled.
But Hernández struck out looking on a ball inside, Verdugo grounded into a force-out and Bogaerts popped out to first baseman Lourdes Gurriel Jr. in foul territory.
Venable tests positive for COVID
During the game, word came out that Red Sox bench coach Will Venable tested positive for COVID. Tom Goodwin did not coach first base because he was in close contact with Venable.
Quality control coach Ramón Vázquez coached first base.
Jarren Duran and J.D. Martinez are on the COVID-related IL with symptoms. The Red Sox are waiting for their test results.
Game 2
The Red Sox and Blue Jays are scheduled to play Game 2 of the doubleheader at 7:07 p.m.
Red Sox righty Tanner Houck (0-2, 2.45 ERA) will start opposite Twins righty José Berríos (8-5, 3.31 ERA).
