Pete Abraham @peteabe · 3h Whitlock struck out LeMahieu and walked Gardner and Judge. Didn't come close on Judge after a swinging strike 1.
Now lefty vs. lefty with Taylor against Gallo. Taylor hasn't pitched in 4 days.
Three straight walks to load the bases for Voit. Sox are begging for trouble here.
And trouble they get, a little flare to CF that plates two and Galllo goes to third when the ball gets boxed around.
Stanton delivers in a pinch and the Yankees take a 5-3 lead.
Taylor is done three hitters and here comes Hansel Robles, their big pitching addition at the deadline.

Pete Abraham @peteabe · 1h Since July 29, #RedSox relievers have allowed 49 ER over their last 62.2 IP.
Take away the three games against tanking Baltimore and it's 48 ER over 52.2 IP in 15 games.

Red Sox Stats @redsoxstats · 3h Whitlock, Taylor, Ottavino, and Barnes are all somewhere between shaky and total meltdown right now. What a shitshow.

Red Sox Stats @redsoxstats · 3h 5 days ago twitter was asking why leave Houck in to face Lowe, Franco and Cruz again who went 1B, HR, 2B after seeing him.
The fact is the Red Sox needed to get 9 outs with a rested Whitlock, Taylor, Ottavino, and Barnes to win a game in NY and they failed. It's on them.

Red Sox Stats @redsoxstats · 2h Since the Chavis trade Davis has gone 6.1 IP, 0 HR, 50% GB, 3 BB, 10 K.
The .500 BABIP is super annoying, but four hits have been grounders off fielders' gloves. I think he is going to end up useful.

Red Sox Stats @redsoxstats · 1h Yankees starter tonight is Luis Gil, third career game. 2 G, 11 IP, 6 H, 0 R, 3 BB, 14 K. He gets elite "rise" on his fastball and pumps them in up in the zone over and over, then he drops a slider and an occasional change to lefties.

Jon Couture @joncouture · 2h You know #RedSox comeback juice is dead when they can't do it against the Yankees bullpen.
That 7th inning was the 18th time this season #RedSox have loaded the bases with none out. First 13, they averaged 2.3 runs and never once failed to score.
Three zeros in their last five, and lost all three games.

Boston seemingly couldn't ask for a better matchup -- and it needs him to deliver.

Boston Red Sox bullpen has 8.31 ERA in last 12 games; why was Tanner Houck pulled so early in Game 1 of doubleheader? Updated 5:20 PM; Today 5:20 PM
By Chris Cotillo | ccotillo@MassLive.com
NEW YORK -- Red Sox starter Tanner Houck was lifted after just four innings and 58 pitches Tuesday afternoon against the Yankees, marking the latest occasion in which he did not pitch deep into a game. According to manager Alex Cora, that was because the Red Sox -- who took a 3-2 lead after Christian Vázquez homered in the top of the fifth -- wanted to aggressively manage their bullpen in a seven-inning game.
By replacing Houck with reliever Garrett Whitlock in the fifth, Cora was hoping to use Whitlock for the fifth and lefty Josh Taylor in the sixth before turning to closer Matt Barnes in the seventh (and final) inning. If the game was tied, Cora said, Houck would have stayed in. But the Red Sox wanted to capitalize on Whitlock’s abilities against Yankees righties D.J. LeMahieu and
Instead, after striking out LeMahieu, Whitlock walked back-to-back batters and Cora brought in Taylor, who walked Joey Gallo then gave up back-to-back singles to Luke Voit and pinch-hitter Giancarlo Stanton as the Yankees took a 5-3 lead. The fifth-inning bullpen implosion proved costly as the Red Sox lost by the same score.
“The game dictated what we do,” Cora said. “We don’t go with a script. We just felt like where we were, bullpen-wise, and where they were, lineup-wise, with the lead, just to be aggressive. It just didn’t work out.”
In total, four of the nine Yankees who hit in the fifth ended up walking and three scored.
“The walks today put us in a bad spot,” Cora said
The rough performance from Whitlock and Taylor continued a brutal stretch for Red Sox relievers, who have posted an 8.31 ERA (36 earned runs in 39 innings) since Aug. 5. Tuesday’s defeat marked the third time in 12 games the Red Sox had blown a save in a game.
Considering the Red Sox’ bullpen -- which had a 3.57 ERA through its first 109 games -- had been such a strength of the team in the first four months, the downturn has been staggering. Opponents have a .929 OPS against Sox relievers in the last 12 games compared to the .708 mark through Aug. 4.
“It hasn’t been great but we still have good stuff,” Cora said. “We’ve got to make sure we get ahead of guys and put them away. I think that’s very important for us... As a unit, we’ve got to be a little bit better. We’ve got to attack guys and put them away. There’s too many deep counts and we’ve been walking too many people.”
