Red Sox notebook Stormy Sunday in New England pushes Red Sox series finale to Monday By Peter Abraham Globe Staff,Updated August 22, 2021, 6:07 p.m.
Hurricane Henri was downgraded to a tropical storm on Sunday, but still brought enough wind and rain to postpone the Rangers-Red Sox game at Fenway Park.
The teams will make up the game at 1:10 p.m. on Monday. Gates will open at 11:40 a.m., and tickets for Sunday’s game will be good. The game will be televised on NESN.
The Red Sox will stick with Nate Eovaldi as their starting pitcher and the Rangers with Koby Allard. Related: Speier: Saturday’s debacle flashpoint of glaring Red Sox issue: Defense
Eovaldi is 1-4 with a 5.13 earned run average in seven starts since the All-Star break. The Sox were 11-7 when Eovaldi started prior to the break, but are 1-5 since, with three of the losses coming against the Yankees.
Eovaldi faced the Rangers on April 30 in Texas and allowed one run over six innings as the Sox won, 6-1.
Allard is 3-10 with a 4.88 ERA. He opened the season in the bullpen and went into the rotation in late May. He is 2-10 with a 5.35 ERA since, but has pitched well this month, allowing seven earned runs over 19 innings in three starts.
Allard has faced the Sox once in career, on Sept. 25, 2019. He started that game at Globe Life Park and allowed five runs over three innings. Tanner Houck’s next step
The Sox open a three-game series against the Twins on Tuesday night and are planning to recall rookie righthander Tanner Houck from Triple A Worcester to make the start. That will allow them to use Chis Sale on Thursday with an extra day of rest.
Sale has made his last four starts, counting his minor league rehabilitation games, after either five days or six days of rest. He also has been held to five innings in both of his starts since rejoining the major league team after a two-year absence due to Tommy John surgery.
Houck has a 3.12 ERA in nine games (seven starts) this season, but is 0-3. Counting six starts at Worcester, he has pitched only 55⅔ innings this season. Red Sox headed to Williamsport
Major League Baseball announced the Red Sox and Orioles are scheduled to play in the Little League Classic at 7 p.m. on Aug. 21, 2022 in Williamsport, Pa. The teams were scheduled to play in the 2020 event that was canceled by the pandemic.
The Orioles will be the home team as part of a three-game series that starts Aug. 19 at Camden Yards. Complete washout
Triple A Worcester also was rained out Sunday. Double A Portland got started, but suspended its game against Binghamton in the fourth inning with it 3-3. The game will resume at 5 p.m. on Sept. 7, followed by the scheduled game against Binghamton, which will be seven innings . . . Righthander Matt Andriese, who was released on Thursday, signed a major league contract with Seattle. Andriese had a 6.03 ERA in 26 appearances for the Sox. His last major league game was on July 9.

Rangers @ Red Sox Monday 23rd August 1pm @ Fenway
Allard 3-10/4.88
Kolby Allard allowed three runs on seven hits and no walks with two strikeouts over 6 1/3 innings in a 7-4 win over the A's on Sunday. Allard completed his third consecutive quality start on Sunday, holding the A's to three runs over 6 1/3. Matt Chapman took Allard deep for a solo homer in the second inning. He completed three more scoreless innings before Mark Canha added a run with a solo shot in the sixth. Allard started the seventh, but was relieved after giving up a pair of singles with one out. One of the inherited runs would come in to score, but the Rangers held on to give Allard his third win of the season.
Eovaldi 10-8/3.91
Eovaldi allowed two runs over five innings Tuesday to take a loss to the Yankees in the second game of a doubleheader. Eovaldi did his part, but run support has been an awfully inconsistent thing for him lately. It's his first loss in five starts against the Yankees this season. He's given up a total of eight runs -- seven earned -- over 31 1/3 innings in those games.
Red Sox attempt to bounce back in series finale vs. Rangers
Boston Red Sox manager Alex Cora is hoping that an extra day off will help to wash away the memory of his team's sloppy play on Saturday night.
The Red Sox committed a season-high five errors and had several baserunning blunders in a 10-1 blowout loss to the scuffling Texas Rangers. Boston will attempt to bounce back after Hurricane Henri postponed the series finale against the Rangers at Fenway Park by one day to Monday afternoon.
"Five errors, we didn't run the bases well. We didn't put good at-bats, we didn't pitch. In this thing, it's a team effort. You start with us, with the coaches, to keep coaching," Cora said. "We've been playing sloppy ball for a while, and they keep doing it."
Cora has made numerous tweaks to Boston's lineup and starting rotation, but nothing has seemed to help get the Red Sox out of their prolonged rut.
Once sitting comfortably atop the American League East standings, the Red Sox are tied with the Oakland Athletics for the second AL wild-card spot.
The loss on Saturday was Boston's 16th in its last 24 games, dropping the Red Sox to 15-19 since the All-Star break.
"It's not acceptable for a team that is fighting for the playoffs to show up like that and play like that," an exasperated Cora said. "It doesn't matter if you win and lose the game, it's how you win or lose the game -- and that's not acceptable."
In the opposite clubhouse, the Rangers were riding high after putting together one of their best performances in an otherwise lost season. Texas recorded a season-high seven doubles to help snap a four-game skid.
The Rangers had lost 13 of 17 overall and suffered their 16th road loss in 17 games since the break with a 6-0 defeat to the Red Sox in the series opener Friday before breaking out the bats on Saturday.
"Playing a good Red Sox team and for us to be able to put up the amount of runs, the hits that we did (was cool) -- everybody in the lineup got a hit tonight," said Rangers utility man Brock Holt, who had a pair of RBI singles in the win over his old team.
It has been a successful homecoming for Holt, who is 3-for-10 with the pair of RBIs in his return to Fenway Park. Holt spent seven seasons with Boston and was a part of two World Series-winning teams from 2013 to 2019.
"Got married playing for the Red Sox, had two kids playing for the Red Sox, we bought a house here," Holt said. "To be able to come back and get the reception that I got ... is super cool for me and my family."
Texas will send left-hander Kolby Allard (3-10, 4.88 ERA) to the mound to oppose Red Sox right-hander Nathan Eovaldi (10-8, 3.91 ERA) in the finale.
Eovaldi is 2-1 with a 2.50 ERA in three career starts versus Texas. Allard will be making his second career appearance against Boston as he attempts to win back-to-back starts for the first time this season.

Christopher Smith @smittyonmlb · 6m Rafael Devers is back in the No. 5 spot in the batting order, where he began the season. He typically hit fifth throughout the first half but he has batted in the Nos. 2 and 4 spots in all but one game since July 19.

Alex Speier @alexspeier · 12m Cora: ‘(The players) know how I felt after the game’ on Saturday.
Cora says he’s pleased to see Schwarber in the OF but he’ll ‘feel better’ when Schwarber is at first base.
Cora says Sox wanted to ‘let Raffy breathe’ by moving him to the fifth spot in the order, something made possible by Schwarber batting second.

Lou Merloni @loumerloni · 22m In order for the Sox to have their best defensive and offensive team on the field, Schwarber needs to play 1B. Until then, they will be a bad defensive team. Too many defensive downgrades to find a way to get his bat in the lineup. Not good. Good pickup though.
