Boston Red Sox vs. Chicago White Sox Sunday, September 12, 2021 at 2:10pm EDT Written by Chris Kubala
The hosiery department of major league baseball concludes their weekend set against one another in a battle for color supremacy in the Windy City. It’s the Boston Red Sox on the road as they conclude a three-game series with the Chicago White Sox Sunday afternoon. In the opening game of the series Friday night, it was Chicago earning a 4-3 home victory to keep Boston reeling in September. Will the Red Sox overcome their COVID-19 issues and come up with a win on the road in this contest? This article was published prior to the conclusion of the middle game of the series Saturday night at Guaranteed Rate Field.
Stay in Playoff Picture Boston lost for the fourth time in five games as they were upended in the opening game of this series Friday night. Perhaps more importantly, they lost another starting pitcher as Chris Sale, who was slated to start Sunday, tested positive for COVID-19 and was placed on the IL. The Red Sox entered Saturday second in the AL East, nine games behind the Rays for the division lead. In the AL wild-card picture, the team held the top wild-card spot by one game over the Yankees and stood 1.5 games ahead of Toronto to remain on the right side of the cut line. Xander Bogaerts, Christian Vazquez (RBI) and Bobby Dalbec (two runs, RBI) each had two hits in the game for Boston. Dalbec hit his 21st homer of the season in the loss. Tanner Houck (0-4) took the loss as he allowed four runs (three earned) on four hits with three walks and one strikeout over 3.2 innings of work.
With Sale on the shelf, the hope is that Nick Pivetta will be able to come back off the COVID-19 list and take the ball for his 27th start of the season for the Red Sox here. He comes in 9-7 with a 4.67 ERA, a 1.341 WHIP, 62 walks and 151 strikeouts over 135 innings of work this season. Pivetta took the loss in his last start, which came on August 30 on the road against the Rays. He threw five innings, allowing four runs on six hits with five walks and six strikeouts in a 6-1 Red Sox defeat. On the road this season, Pivetta is 5-5 with a 3.82 ERA, a 1.217 WHIP, 32 walks and 79 strikeouts over 70.2 innings in 13 starts. Pivetta makes his fourth career appearance and second start against the White Sox in this contest. He comes in with no record, a 2.70 ERA, a 1.65 WHIP, four walks and eight strikeouts over 6.2 innings of work. Pivetta, in his 121st career major league appearance and 100th start, pitches at Guaranteed Rate Field for the first time in this contest.
Chicago White Sox Coasting in AL Central Chicago won the opening game of the series at home Friday night after dropping three of their previous four games. The White Sox entered Saturday holding an 11-game lead over the Indians in the AL Central race. On Friday night, Chicago finished with six hits with no player having more than one. Jose Abreu hit his 29th homer of the season, a three-run shot, while Luis Robert drove in the other run for the White Sox in the contest. Carlos Rodon (12-5) earned the win on the mound as he threw five innings, allowing one run on three hits with no walks and seven strikeouts. Liam Hendriks worked around a hit in the ninth to record his 34th save of the year.
Lance Lynn gets the start here for his 25th start of the year for the White Sox in this contest. He comes in 10-4 with a 2.59 ERA, a 1.076 WHIP, 42 walks and 152 strikeouts over 135.2 innings of action on the season. Lynn took the loss in his last start, which came August 28 at home against the Cubs. He threw five innings, allowing seven runs on seven hits with two walks and seven strikeouts in a game the White Sox lost by a 7-0 score. Pitching at home this year, Lynn is 6-3 with a 2.75 ERA, a 1.012 WHIP, 24 walks and 99 strikeouts over 85 innings in 15 starts. Lynn makes his eighth career appearance and seventh start against the Red Sox in this contest. He comes in 2-1 with a 2.31 ERA, a 1.128 WHIP, 13 walks and 28 strikeouts over 39 innings of work against them. Alex Cora: Red Sox’ signing of Travis Shaw was ‘under the radar’ addition Shaw has been impactful since rejoining Sox
By Steve Hewitt | stephen.hewitt@bostonherald.com | Boston Herald September 12, 2021 at 5:00 a.m.
Travis Shaw wasn’t in the Red Sox’ initial lineup on Saturday night, but he was taking batting practice and knew there was a chance he could play. J.D. Martinez, a late scratch on Friday, was still dealing with a back issue and wasn’t a sure bet to play.
When Alex Cora told him at the end of batting practice that Martinez was indeed out and he was in the lineup, Shaw was more than ready. It showed, as he produced two of the biggest hits of the night — a three-run homer in the third and the ultimately game-winning RBI single in the 10th — that lifted the Red Sox to a resilient 9-8 win over the White Sox.
“Even when I’m not playing, I try to stay ready just in case something like this happens,” Shaw said. “You never know when this could happen, especially late in the year. Guys are grinding a little bit on their bodies, so I stayed ready and thankfully had a good night.”
It’s a role he’s still getting adjusted to.
In his first stint with the Red Sox, he was an everyday player. That continued as he was traded to the Brewers, then joined the Blue Jays and the Brewers again. But since joining the Red Sox a second time after being designated for assignment in mid-August, he’s been used more of as a spark plug off the bench, providing quality pinch-hit at-bats or starting in an emergency basis like on Saturday.
He’s succeeded in the role partly at least because it seems like he’s embracing it.
“This is kind of the first time I’ve been in this role and I’ve tried to ask some guys who have been in this role in the past, like, ‘How do you do it? How do you stay ready?’” Shaw said. “For me, I just continue to prepare like I’m playing every day. That’s the only way I can keep my body going and try to stay up on all the pitchers and the matchups that I might face late in games with relievers. For me, it’s still new. I’m still trying to get used to it, but kind of learning on the fly here and so far it’s been turning out pretty well.”
The Red Sox’ signing of Shaw didn’t garner much attention after his struggles the past few years and an injury spell this season. But whether it’s the walk-off grand slam he hit to beat the Rangers on Aug. 23, his performance on Saturday or his ability to work deep counts, his addition has certainly been impactful.
“He’s always ready, he’s always prepared,” Cora said. “The at-bats since Day 1 in New York, 3-2 count, line drive to left with the bases loaded, and so on and so on. He’s a veteran guy and understands his role. He’s always ready and I think that was a very under the radar pickup by us and he’s done an amazing job.”

Boston Red Sox notebook: Connor Seabold debuts, Josh Taylor gets first MLB save; J.D. Martinez (back) likely out again Sunday
By Chris Cotillo | ccotillo@MassLive.com
CHICAGO -- Almost four hours before the Red Sox clinched a dramatic, extra-innings win over the White Sox on Saturday night, starter Connor Seabold threw his first-ever major-league pitch. Though Seabold didn’t factor into the decision (he allowed two runs on three hits in three innings), he still kept Boston in the game early on and was able to get his feet wet at the highest level.
All things considered, the debut was a successful one for the righty, who is ranked by SoxProspects.com as the second-best pitcher in Boston’s system.
“It was fun,” Seabold said. “I don’t think it has really sunk in, what really happened tonight. That was a fun game, top to bottom. I’m still kind of reeling from the energy and everything, and helping the team get a win.”
Seabold paid for one major mistake -- a two-run Leury García homer in the second -- but was able to get out of trouble in the third. With two runners on base and one out, he got White Sox star José Abreu to ground into an inning-ending double play and celebrated as he walked off the diamond.
“He did a good job,” said manager Alex Cora. “Obviously, that’s a tough lineup. There were a lot of big outs throughout the evening, but first and second, one out, that ground-ball double play by Abreu, that was huge.”
Seabold said he didn’t feel like he had his best stuff in his debut but Cora was impressed with the righty’s changeup. After three innings, with the Red Sox leading, 7-2, Cora lifted Seabold in favor of Garrett Richards, who went on to allow five unearned runs in the fourth.
“He gave us nine (outs), and we felt like we were suited to use our bullpen and close it,” Cora said. “You know what? At the end of the day, we did.”
Seabold said he was glad he came out of the clubhouse to watch the last couple innings of the dramatic victory.
“Obviously, I haven’t been up during a playoff push before but that’s about what I imagined,” he said.
Taylor picks up first save
With the Red Sox leading, 9-8, after Travis Shaw hit an RBI single in the top of the 10th, Cora turned to lefty Josh Taylor in the bottom of the inning. Despite running into trouble early, Taylor was able to record his first career save.
Yasmani Grandal led off the 10th with a single that advanced automatic runner Eloy Jiménez to third base, meaning Chicago suddenly had runners on the corners with no outs. But Taylor battled back, striking out García and Danny Mendick to set up a showdown with Brian Goodwin. On a 2-2 count, Goodwin slapped a slider into the second-base hole but Kiké Hernández fielded it and Bobby Dalbec picked it for the final out of the game.
“He didn’t give in,” Cora said. “We knew, and we were playing, that the most important run there is the one at first. He kept making pitches, like it doesn’t matter. Get a ground ball, turn a double play and we move on to the next inning. But he did an amazing job.”
Taylor became the ninth Red Sox pitcher to record a save this season, joining Matt Barnes (24), Adam Ottavino (11), Garrett Richards (2), Hansel Robles (2), Garrett Whitlock (2), Matt Andriese (1), Tanner Houck (1) and Phillips Valdez (1).
“It was exhilarating, to say the least,” Taylor said. “You get put in those kind of situations and you get that extra tick you didn’t think you had. I just felt like I was able to make my pitches tonight.”
Hernández, Dalbec save day with game-ending play
At first glance, Taylor thought Goodwin’s grounder would find the right-field glass and score Jiménez to tie the game. But Hernández ranged to his left and one-hopped the ball to Dalbec, who was able to stay on the bag in impressive fashion.
“I thought there was a chance it got through once it got past Bobby,” Taylor said. “Kiké made a great play on it and Bobby made a great play to pick up the throw. All around, it was a good defensive execution there in the last inning.”
Cora was impressed as well.
“Good job by Kiké, obviously by Bobby, too,” he said.” For Bobby to get up and get to first, having that presence of mind, that’s a tough one. That’s a tough one for both of them.
“When we play defense, we become a really good team,” Cora said. “The second part of the game, we played great defense.”
Martinez likely out Sunday
Designated hitter J.D. Martinez will most likely miss his third straight game Sunday due to back tightness, Cora said. Martinez was scratched from the lineup before each of the last two games.
“I know he’s trying, but I think one more day and see where he’s at in Seattle on Monday,” Cora said. “Like I told him, I said, ‘Dude, I’d rather lose you for three days than for a week.’ He understands that.”
Shortstop Xander Bogaerts, who returned from the COVID-19 injured list Friday, might also have the day off Sunday. Cora hinted that the Red Sox will likely use a few reserves in the series finale.
“It might be interesting tomorrow but we’ve had some interesting lineups the last few weeks and we’ve been able to show up and play good baseball,” he said.
Pivetta will pitch Sunday
Righty Nick Pivetta (9-7, 4.67 ERA) will come off the COVID-19 injured list to start Sunday’s rubber game opposite White Sox righty Lance Lynn (10-4, 2.59 ERA). First pitch is scheduled for 2:10 p.m. ET.

Pete Abraham @peteabe · 4h Four of the last five Red Sox games have been decided by one run. They're 2-2 in those games.
Overall, they're 8-7 since the outbreak. Which is pretty good all things considered. The Sox need to continue to hold their own through this road trip, then I think they'll be in pretty good shape for the remainder of the season, schedule wise. Hopefully, we'll have most of our guys back by then too.

Red Sox, seeking to hold on to wild card, face White Sox According to STATS
With Chris Sale scratched due to a positive COVID-19 test, the Boston Red Sox will look to regroup with Nick Pivetta on the mound Sunday for the series finale against the host Chicago White Sox.
Sale was in line to start against his former team before testing positive for the virus on Friday and landing on the COVID-19 injured list.
Utility man Danny Santana became the team's 11th player to land on the COVID list since Aug. 27 after testing positive ahead of Saturday night's game.
The Red Sox continue to battle and hold a one-game lead over the Toronto Blue Jays and New York Yankees for the top American League wild-card spot heading into action Sunday.
Boston is 6-4 in its past 10 games.
On Saturday, Chicago (81-61) erased an early five-run deficit to take an 8-7 lead in the fifth inning but ultimately fell short as Boston (81-63) prevailed 9-8 in 10 innings. However, the White Sox still maintain a comfortable 11-game lead atop the AL Central standings.
The Red Sox had dropped four of five games after a 4-3 loss to Chicago in the series opener Friday.
"The last three baseball games have been great as far as just showing up and doing everything possible to try to win a game regardless of the result," Red Sox manager Alex Cora said. "And that was a good one."
One virus-impacted pitcher will replace another for the Red Sox as Pivetta (9-7, 4.67 ERA) makes his return after testing positive for and being placed on the COVID list last Sunday. Because he was fully vaccinated, Pivetta didn't have to quarantine for a minimum of 10 days.
The 28-year-old right-hander was scheduled to start that day at home against Cleveland and was a late scratch.
Pivetta is just 1-3 with a 5.63 ERA in 32 innings over his past seven outings. He last pitched Aug. 30 at Tampa Bay, giving up four runs on six hits while walking five and striking out six over five innings in a 6-1 defeat.
Overall, Pivetta is 0-0 with a 2.70 ERA in three career outings (one start) versus Chicago. On April 17, he threw 3 2/3 innings and allowed two runs on four hits with four walks and three strikeouts against the White Sox in a 7-4 home win for Boston.
Lance Lynn (10-4, 2.59) will make his return Sunday for the White Sox, two days after being activated from the 10-day injured list.
The All-Star right-hander was sidelined with right-knee inflammation and last pitched Aug. 28, when he gave up a season-high seven runs in five innings against the Chicago Cubs in a 7-0 defeat.
"It's one of those things, I said when I went on (the injured list), we were playing catch-up every start -- and that's miserable," Lynn told the Chicago Tribune of the knee issue. "Taking the break gets you a chance to get caught up with it and hopefully stay along with it instead of letting it get ahead of you."
Lynn has gone 2-1 with an impressive 2.31 ERA and 28 strikeouts in seven career games (six starts) against the Red Sox.
Red Sox designated hitter J.D. Martinez could return to the lineup after missing back-to-back games with back tightness.

5 years later, Travis Shaw once again plays unexpected hero
Big Foot Slow Burn
By Rob Bradford an hour ago
The irony shouldn't been lost on Travis Shaw.
Not supposed to play. Big game. Yoan Moncada in attendance. This was Sept. 2016 all over again.
Saturday night, Shaw supplied a good portion of the heroics in the Red Sox' 9-8, 10-inning win over the White Sox in Chicago. There was the three-run homer in a seven-run third inning and then the game-winning single in the 10th.
All of this coming after Shaw only discovered he was in the lineup just about an hour before the game, filling in for J.D. Martinez, whose back hadn't quite calmed down.
“Yeah, I was taking BP," Shaw said, explaining he found out his name was in the starting lineup. "(Alex Cora) AC told me about halfway through BP that there’s a chance that I might be in there if JD’s back kept acting up and then right at the end of BP, I got the notice that I was in there. I just went about my day normally. I try to stay — even when I’m not playing, I try to stay ready just in case something like this happens. You never know when this could happen, especially late in the year. Guys are grinding a little bit on their bodies, so I stayed ready and thankfully had a good night.” Podcast Episode Weekend Shows LIVE BP - Mike Brenly Reflects on 9/11; The Curse Of The Bradfo Interview Listen Now
For those who remembered Shaw's last go-round with the Red Sox, much of the scene should have rung a bell.
When August turned into September back in 2016, Shaw was kicked to the curb when it came to the starting third base spot, with the Red Sox choosing to promote Moncada.
But before the then-rookie got his first start, the Red Sox decided Shaw would start one more game, manning third for the series-opener against Oakland. That night the lefty hitter made his feelings clear via a three-hit, five RBI game.
The next two games in Oakland and the first two contests in San Diego in the Red Sox' next series, Shaw ended up getting a total of one at-bat, spending much of his time trying to learn left field. Then came the series finale against the Padres. There were two hits and another home run. And with Moncada struggling, the conversation had changed.
Most everyone had buried Shaw. He wasn't quite ready for such a dismissal.
Sound familiar?
“To be honest, this is kind of the first time I’ve been in this role," he said. "When I went back to Milwaukee the first couple months of the season, I was playing every day. Even last year in Toronto, I was playing 5-6 days a week, so this is kind of the first time I’ve been in this role and I’ve tried to ask some guys who have been in this role in the past, like how do you do it? How do you stay ready? For me, I just continue to prepare like I’m playing every day. That’s the only way I can keep my body going and try to stay up on all the pitchers and the matchups that I might face late in games with relievers. For me, it’s still new. I’m still trying to get used to it, but kind of learning on the fly here and so far it’s been turning out pretty well.”
Truth be told, Shaw has more than held his own while adjusting to his new existence.
Six of his eight hits have been of the extra-base variety, allowing for a .267 batting average and 1.000 OPS in 34 plate appearances.
Another hint that Shaw could handle the out-of-nowhere at-bats came at the end of the 2016 season. By the time he pinch-hit for Aaron Hill in Game 3 of the Red Sox American League Division Series game against the Indians, Shaw had a total of four at-bats over the course of two weeks.
But, in his last game with the Red Sox before being dealt to Milwaukee a month later, Shaw came through with a pinch-hit, eighth-inning single. He would then hit a game-ending rocket to right field in the ninth that would have won the game for the Sox if it just a little more air under it.
Different player. Different team. Eerily similar situation.
Lesson: Shaw seems like he might have a few more things to say.
“I don’t want to say surprised. Coming off my rehab assignment, when I got DFA’d, my swing felt like it was in a good spot," he said. "I felt like I was ready to go and I’ve been able to get some spot starts here and there and had some early success, which obviously helps your confidence level and everything and everything translated from the rehab assignment to the big leagues. I just feel in a good spot overall. Health-wise, swing-wise, so can’t complain.”

Boston Red Sox roster: Connor Seabold to be optioned, Christian Arroyo not expected back during road trip Updated: 12:33 p.m. | Published: 12:31 p.m.
By Christopher Smith | csmith@masslive.com
The Boston Red Sox will option right-hander Connor Seabold back to Triple-A Worcester on Sunday to make room for Nick Pivetta.
“He’s going to go back to Worcester and he’s going to start down there,” Red Sox manager Alex Cora said Sunday.
Pivetta, who is returning from the COVID-related IL, will start for Boston vs. the White Sox. First pitch is at 2:10 p.m., eastern.
