Boston Red Sox to use Tanner Houck out of bullpen during final postseason push; ‘Everything will be on the table’ Updated: 4:06 p.m. | Published: 4:06 p.m.
By Christopher Smith | csmith@masslive.com
BOSTON — The Red Sox are expected to use Tanner Houck out of the bullpen beginning Saturday.
Boston has 14 games remaining and three built-in off days. So manager Alex Cora has the ability to use a four-man rotation (Chris Sale, Nathan Eovaldi, Nick Pivetta and Eduardo Rodriguez) the rest of the way as Boston tries to make the postseason.
Boston and Toronto are in a virtual tie for the top two Wild Cards, although the Jays hold a percentage point-lead because they have played two fewer games. The Yankees are a half game behind.
Cora said the Red Sox could use Houck in several different reliever roles.
“Where we’re at right now, I think everything will be on the table,” Cora said. “This guy can give us nine outs like he did in New York early in the season. And he can come in and face a pocket of righties and do his thing on multiple days. So it’s good to have him. It’s good to have Garrett (Whitlock). It’s good to have G-Rich (Garrett Richards). All those three righties who can go multiple innings. But the more we have, the better matchups we’re going to get throughout the rest of the season. And we’ll adjust. We’ll play the game accordingly. Having him is going to help us tremendously in the bullpen.”
Chris Sale will be activated off the COVID-related IL to start Friday. Nick Pivetta will pitch Saturday and Nathan Eovaldi Sunday. Eduardo Rodriguez will start Tuesday.

Alex Speier @alexspeier · 9m A note on protocols for MLB players who test positive for COVID-19: Default minimum is 10 days, starting the test that comes back positive is taken. For Sale, the clock started with a positive PCR test taken on Wed., 9/8. So today marks 10 days since that test.

No sense of candy coating it it's getting late no damn sense of letting others do the work for us either, even though we will be scoreboard watching
and of course, the Orioles come to town, and a few have been good all year, Mullins and Mancinni, Mountcastle a butcher in the field, is swinging pretty well as is Hays lately.
And no dis respect but their pitching is minor league.
So the Red Sox should try and quit with the gag reel defense, the bone head base running, and beat the shit out of the Orioles this week-end.
They need to sweep this series.
Period. No one will recognize, but this has been a good stretch for us. 6 v Cleveland 7 v TB 3 at WS 3 at Seattle 6 at home and 13 on the road. That's a tough stretch and we went 10-9.

3-1 RS going into the bottom of the 5th. I'm wondering if Cora is thinking about Sale and his 79 pitch count. If we could get another run in the bottom of the 5th, it might make a decision to pull him a little easier.

Well, I know you try to save your BP when you have a 7-1 lead, but I'd rather have Robles in there than Perez. Robles will wobble but not fall down, usually.

Nice win. Cora pulled Whitlock after one, instead of his usual 2. Sawamura and Barnes got to get in a few innings to shake some rust off. And Perez delivered a scoreless inning. Vazquez heating up a little, after a season-long cold spell. I guess one could say that it is only Baltimore, but BA just gave the NYY a hard time.
