Xander Bogaerts belts three-run homer, Boston Red Sox beat Orioles to stay atop AL Wild Card standings Updated: 4:19 p.m. | Published: 4:19 p.m.
By Christopher Smith | csmith@masslive.com
BOSTON — Red Sox manager Alex Cora mentioned before Saturday’s game that Xander Bogaerts still was trying to find his groove at the plate after returning from the COVID-IL on Sept. 10.
“When you lose 10 days, it’s not easy,” Cora said. “I know Xander, although he’s been getting hits, he’s been battling with his swing.”
Bogaerts found his swing Saturday. He went 3-for-5 with four RBIs and two runs to lead the Red Sox 9-3 over the Orioles here at Fenway Park.
Boston remains atop the AL Wild Card standings. It entered with a half game lead over the Yankees and one game lead over the Blue Jays. Both New York and Toronto are losing right now.
Bogaerts’ RBI single in the fifth put Boston ahead 4-3. He then delivered the knockout punch with a three-run homer in the sixth inning, giving the Red Sox an 8-3 lead.
Bogaerts’ home run went 419 feet and left his bat at 104.3 mph.
Dalbec remained red hot. He went 2-for-3 with a 100.7 mph two-run double and 108.2 mph single.
Dalbec’s double gave Boston a 3-2 lead in the first inning.
Rafael Devers went 3-for-5 with a double, three runs and one RBI.
Red Sox starter Nick Pivetta lasted just 3 ⅔ innings. He gave up the three runs, seven hits (two homers) and one walk while striking out three. The first three pitches he threw were stroked for hits (double, homer, single). The first four hitters reached against him. He walked the cleanup hitter.

Ian Browne @ianmbrowne · 1m One thing to keep an eye on. If the Red Sox and Blue tie in the Wild Card standings with the Yankees out of the mix, the game would be at Fenway Park because the Red Sox barely won that season series, 10-9.
