Red Sox aim to pad AL wild-card lead vs. visiting Mets
Before taking on the New York Yankees in a pivotal three-game series later in the week, the Boston Red Sox look to pad their American League wild-card lead during a two-game set with the visiting New York Mets beginning Tuesday.
The Red Sox (86-65) entered an off day Monday up one game on the Toronto Blue Jays for the top wild-card spot. The Yankees were 2 1/2 games back of Boston but remained in striking distance. Both rivals will play Monday as the Yankees host the Texas Rangers, while the Blue Jays are at the Tampa Bay Rays.
Boston has won five straight after sweeping the 100-loss Baltimore Orioles over the weekend. A short series against another losing club in the Mets (73-77) represents a similar opportunity.
"When games matter (like this), every game becomes a playoff game, every pitch matters, every inning matters," said utility man Enrique Hernandez, who drove in a pair of runs in an 8-6 comeback victory Sunday. "It's a lot of fun, and hopefully we can keep playing good baseball and winning some games."
The Mets enter the series having snapped a five-game losing streak with a 3-2 win over the Philadelphia Phillies on Sunday night.
Boston will send left-hander Eduardo Rodriguez (11-8, 5.00 ERA) to the mound for Tuesday's opener. New York will counter with right-hander Marcus Stroman (9-12, 2.88 ERA).
After the Mets, the Red Sox will conclude their regular-season home schedule with a three-game weekend series against the Yankees. Boston's final six games are on the road against more losing clubs in Baltimore and the Washington Nationals.
"I like our chances," Boston starter Nathan Eovaldi said. "I like our schedule coming up. We just have to keep doing the small things right, going out there and competing and keep winning."
The Red Sox fell behind 6-5 in the seventh inning against the Orioles on Sunday before scoring three in the bottom of the frame. Boston has tallied seven or more runs in each contest during its winning streak.
The Mets also came from behind at home against the Phillies, erasing a 2-0 deficit with two runs in the fifth before Jeff McNeil's solo home run in the seventh sealed the result.
"It was a big hit," manager Luis Rojas said. "Those big hits showed up a lot in the first half to win a lot of one-run games. It hasn't shown up lately. Tonight, it showed up from Jeff."
Though not officially eliminated from postseason contention, the Mets are 5 1/2 games back in the National League East and seven off the pace in the wild-card hunt.
Rodriguez allowed two runs (one earned) over six innings in a no-decision against the Seattle Mariners last time out. He is 1-1 with a 4.02 ERA in three starts this month. The southpaw will face the Mets for the first time in his career.
Stroman is no stranger to the Red Sox, having spent 5 1/2 seasons with the division rival Blue Jays. He is 6-3 with a 3.44 ERA in 14 starts lifetime against the club.
Stroman surrendered two runs over six innings in a no-decision against the St. Louis Cardinals in his most recent performance.

I think the schedule is slightly in our favor the rest of the way out. I don't like tomorrow night's pitching matchup, but hopefully we can win both games against the Mets. We need at least one.
More importantly, we need to take care of business against the Yankees starting on Friday. Even though the Jays are a better team than the Yankees, I'd much rather face the Jays in the WC game than face the Yankees.

Us being in the post-season, and the NYY being out, has to make this a good season no matter what. That said, should the Jays get into the ALDS, they'll be tough. Ray, Berrios, and Manoah, with Matz as their #4, is pretty tough.

Christian Arroyo on verge of activation and just in time with postseason approaching By Julian McWilliams Globe Staff,Updated September 20, 2021, 8:49 p.m.
The Red Sox haven’t seen Christian Arroyo in nearly a month following his bout with COVID-19. But that could change soon. According to a Major League source, there’s a possibility the Red Sox activate Arroyo for their series against the Mets beginning Tuesday.
Manager Alex Cora intimated on a number of occasions the Sox second baseman felt symptoms because of the virus. Arroyo originally went on the COVID-related injured list on Aug. 27 as a close contact to Kiké Hernández, who tested positive for COVID despite being vaccinated. Two days later, the Red Sox confirmed that Arroyo also tested positive.
In Arroyo’s absence, the Red Sox received a significant boost in their acquisition of Jose Iglesias. He’s hit .341/.441/.581 with a homer in 34 plate appearances with the Sox.
“He’s a tough at-bat regardless of the result,” Cora said. “We were talking about it and he feels very comfortable at Fenway. He hits line drives to right field and fly balls to left field. He puts the ball in play. Sometimes he chases a lot of pitches, but he keeps fouling them off. It’s been refreshing. He’s been a great veteran guy that understands where we’re at and what we are fighting for.”
The Red Sox still own the first wild-card spot. But if they domake the postseason Iglesias won’t be in that fight with them because he wasn’t on the Sox’ roster prior to Sept. 1.
That makes it even more imperative Arroyo returns. Iglesias has played a solid second base after struggling at shortstop with the Angels. He helped to stabilize the Sox’ defense, allowing Hernández to return to center field and Alex Verdugo or Kyle Schwarber to play left field. This means J.D. Martinez can return to the DH spot where he’s most effective.
But Arroyo provides the Sox that same amount of stability because he, too, grades out as an above-average defender at second base.
The injury bug hit Arroyo a good amount this year, resulting in just 175 plate appearances. He’s hit a respectable .264/324/.453 in that span.
The Red Sox still couldn’t provide an update on Garrett Whitlock, who left Sunday’s game against the Orioles with pectoral tightness. Jarren Duran and Jonathan Araúz, who both hit the COVID-19 IL, won’t be activated for Tuesday’s game, according to a source. They will instead play in another game at Triple A Worcester.
...
The Red Sox will be tested against Marcus Stroman of the Mets Tuesday evening. Stroman has had one of his best seasons in the majors this year, carrying a 2.88 ERA in 31 starts this year.
Stroman is an old-school type of pitcher who doesn’t rely on the strikeout for effectiveness. In 169 innings, Stroman has just 151 strikeouts. What he does have, however, is the ability to locate.
Stroman is a sinker-pitcher, seemingly dumping his four-seam fastball following his rookie campaign. He has a six-pitch mix, but relies heavily on his sinker, changeup, and slider in order to get hitters out. The movement on those pitches and the effectiveness of his sinker have resulted in a 57.4 percent ground ball rate for his career.
Stroman is no stranger to the Red Sox either as a member of the Blue Jays five-plus years. He has a 3.44 ERA in 86 ⅓ innings against the Red Sox. He’s been even better at Fenway, registering a 2.97 ERA in 30 ⅓ innings pitched. Eduardo Rodriguez takes the ball for the Red Sox, fresh off six innings of one-run ball vs. the Mariners. Rodriguez has a 5.00 ERA.

Red Sox Notebook Red Sox to promote top prospect Triston Casas to Triple A Worcester By Alex Speier Globe Staff,Updated September 20, 2021, 5:12 p.m.
With the end of Portland’s Double A season, Red Sox top prospect Triston Casas along with righthander Josh Winckowski and catcher Ronaldo Hernández are being promoted to Triple A Worcester for the final two weeks, according to a major league source.
The 21-year-old first baseman has what one evaluator recently called “superstar” potential. The 2018 first-rounder, who shuttled between Portland and the US Olympic team this summer, hit .284/.395/.484 with 13 homers in 77 games for the Sea Dogs, including a .358/.507/.811 run with 7 homers in his last 15 games of the year.
Winckowski, 23, acquired from the Mets in the three-way deal that sent Andrew Benintendi to the Royals, was 8-3 with a 4.14 ERA, and 7.9 strikeouts and 2.7 walks per nine innings over 100 innings.
Hernández, 23, was acquired from the Rays prior to the season for lefthander Jeffrey Springs and righthander Chris Mazza. After a slow start, Hernández came on strong at the end of the year, hitting .325/.364/.585 with 10 homers in 56 games since the beginning of July to finish the Double A season with a .280/.319/.506 line and 16 homers.
The Red Sox have a good problem on their hands. With Casas now in Triple A and just a step away from the big leagues, Bobby Dalbec stands in his way. At least with the way he’s playing now. After a tumultuous four months, Dalbec has certainly situated himself as a key cog to this Red Sox team. In fact, he’s been the one who has kept them alive.
Through July, Dalbec batted just .216/.260/.399 with a .659 OPS. Since then Dalbec has been one of the best hitters in all of baseball, slashing .409/.737 with a 1.146 OPS. The plate discipline and being on time, a part of the game manager Alex Cora said has been a key to Dalbec’s success, is evident.
In his first 296 plate appearances this year, Dalbec negotiated just 13 walks. In his last 132 plate appearances, Dalbec has 15 walks. Kyle Schwarber, the Sox’ key trade deadline acquisition, has become a matchup guy. Alex Verdugo, too. Why?
“Bobby. Let’s put it that way,” Cora said. “Bobby has to play against every lefty and you have to pick and choose with Alex and Kyle. That’s the bottom line. Kyle will be fine. You know, he’ll play both games against the Mets. They’re going with two righties and Alex will play both games against righties. We’ll find a way to do that. But this is more about Bobby Dalbec than anything else.”
Dalbec’s next step, according to one industry source, is to avoid the dismal lows. But as Casas rises up the ranks, Dalbec is certainly having something to say about it.

Red Sox vs. Mets Series Preview
Queens is coming to Fenway By Bayleigh Von Schneider@Fraulein89 Sep 21, 2021, 12:01pm EDT
Amazin Avenue The opponent in one sentence
The Mets have some real talent on their roster but they’ve been a consistently underperforming bunch and find themselves all but officially out of the playoff race. Record
73-77 Head-to-head Record
Red Sox 2, Mets 0 Trend
Down. The Mets, with their shiny new outspoken billionaire owner along with the blockbuster trade and subsequent extension of superstar shortstop Francisco Lindor, were primed to take over the rather lackluster NL East. Instead, they own a losing record in September, entering Tuesday’s game 8-10, having been swept by the St. Louis Cardinals, and losing two of three from the Philadelphia Phillies. The Mets are 5.5 games behind the division-leading Atlanta Braves, and 7.0 games behind for the second National League Wild Card. Pitching Matchups
9/21: Eduardo Rodriguez vs. Marcus Stroman, 7:10 PM ET
The Red Sox hand the ball to Eduardo Rodriguez to help start the short two-game series off on the right foot. Rodriguez’s season has been the textbook definition of inconsistent. As much as Rodriguez has struggled, he’s also been rather unlucky, as his 3.46 FIP and 3.48 xFIP are career bests. A pitcher is simply more than his ERA, especially when the defense behind him has been abysmal. In Rodriguez’s last start against the Mariners, he went six innings and gave up six hits, two runs (one earned) and one walk while striking out six.
Opposing Rodriguez will be veteran right-hander Marcus Stroman for the Mets. Since being diagnosed with a UCL strain, the best pitcher on planet earth, Jacob deGrom, has been on the injured list, leaving Marcus Stroman as the most consistent starting pitcher for the Mets. Stroman enters his start with a 2.88 ERA and a 1.12 WHIP in 169 innings this year. His ERA is a bit better from his peripherals, as he owns a 4.08 xERA, 3.27 FIP, and a 3.51 xFIP. Rodriguez has a better xERA and xFIP than Stroman on the season, with the latter having better results. The former Blue Jay will feature a low-90s two-seam along with a slider, splitter, and cutter.
9/22: TBD vs. Tylor Megill, 7:10 PM ET (ESPN for out-of-market)
The Red Sox relegated Tanner Houck to the bullpen last week, an inspired decision, no doubt, given the Red Sox possess off days on either end of the Mets and Yankees series. The off days will allow for the Red Sox to work with a rotation of Nate Eovaldi, Chris Sale, Eduardo Rodriguez, and Nick Pivetta on normal rest. As of right now, game two on Wednesday is TBD. If the Red Sox are able to handily win game one, look for any one of these options, Pivetta to get the start on short rest, a spot starter, or a bullpen game. If the Red Sox lose game one, Chris Sale most likely slides into a game two start.
The Mets have announced that game two starter will be rookie right-hander Tylor Megill. In 16 starts Megill has posted a 4.57 ERA, 3.72 xERA, 4.38 FIP, 3.82 xFIP, and a 1.29 WHIP in 80 2⁄3 innings pitched. Megill posses a 4-seam fastball, changeup, slider and curveball. Look for Megill to use his fastball most of the time, which the Red Sox should use to the team’s advantage, as the righty is the 23rd percentile of hard hit percentage. Old Friends
The Red Sox will be seeing lots of old freinds this series. Heath Hembree, who was traded, along with Brandon Workman in 2020 to the Phillies for Nick Pivetta and Connor Seabold was claimed off waivers by the Mets from the Reds in August.
Kevin Pillar, who spent 30 games with the Red Sox in 2020 before being dealt at the trade deadline, signed a two-year contract this offseason with the Mets. Pillar has appeared in 115 games for the Mets and is slashing .223/.270/.413 and a wRC+ of 88. Needless to say, Chaim Bloom made the correct decision in not looking to re-add Pillar into the outfield mix for the 2021 season.
José Peraza, another player Boston tried out during the 2020 season, has spent all of 2021 with the Mets. The Red Sox were right again to look toward other options for infield help in 2021, as Peraza is hitting just .209/.266/.403 with an 85 wRC+.
Last, but not least, the oldest of friends, Rich Hill. Hill, a native of Milton, Massachusetts, pitched for the home town team 2010-2012 and again in 2015. Hill was traded at the 2021 deadline to the Mets from the Tampa Bay Rays. Notable Position Players
The most notable, shortstop Francisco Lindor and his monster, 10 year, $341 million contract has been underperfoming from the start of the year. For the season, in 113 games, Lindor is batting .229/.323/.401, with a wRC+ of 103. What Lindor lacks in offense for the 2021 season he at least makes up for in defense with a 5.4 dWAR. For the sake of the Mets organization, let’s hope Lindor is more the 7.2 win player he was in 2018 moving forward in his career, and not the 2.8 win player he is right at the moment. The Mets paid for the 7.2 win player.
Another notable is Lindor’s fellow countryman, Javier Báez. Báez was traded from the Cubs to be Lindor’s double play partner at second for the rest of the 2021 season. The Mets gave up OF prospect Pete Crow-Armstrong, who settles in nicely as a top five prospects in the Cubs organization, for a player that will most likely be a rental, and a rental that also most likely will not help them get to the postseason.
Slugger Pete Alonso continues to be just that, a slugger. He’s mashed 33 home runs, and is slashing .261/.341/.510, with an .850 OPS and a 131 wRC+. Red Sox fans should hope and pray that Bobby Dalbec becomes a Pete Alonso type of player. Dalbec possesses the tools to be a player like Alonso.
J.D. Davis has been one of the more productive offensive players for the Mets this season. Davis is batting .295/.389/.451 with a wRC+ of 135, yet Davis has only played in 71 games due to nagging injuries.
A big issue for the Mets lack of success does have a bit to do with injury, but a heck of a lot more to do with the guys brought in to help, and the overall lack of success. The Mets decided to go after catcher James McCann instead of catcher J.T. Realmuto, who has put up a 109 wRC+ to McCann’s 83 wRC+. Bullpen Snapshot
The Mets bullpen ranks right below the Red Sox with a 3.97 ERA, which is sixth best in the National League. The Mets do not necessarily have a bad bullpen, but they have an injured one. Edwin Díaz has posted up 30 saves and a 2.64 FIP, while offseason addition Trevor May 3.67 FIP in 58 2⁄3 innings and lefty Aaron Loup has a 2.64 FIP. A major blow to the bullpen came when Dellin Betances pitched only a single inning before having season-ending shoulder surgery. Díaz, Loup, and May are the real threats in the bullpen, so beating up on the starter and getting into the pen early would be an ideal game plan for the Red Sox. Facing May, Loup and Díaz while trailing in a game could spell late-inning trouble for the Red Sox. Injuries
The biggest, most devastating injury for the Mets is the UCL strain injury to ace Jacob deGrom. He previously had Tommy John surgery in 2010 while in the minor leagues. Another surgery would potentially be a disaster, and let’s hope it does not come to that, because Jacob deGrom is not just for Mets fans, he’s for all fans of baseball. There is not a better pitcher right now in MLB better than Jacob deGrom, and watching him pitch is a pleasure and a privilege.
Dellin Betances was previously mention to be on the IL, after season ending surgery. Starter Noah Syndergaard has not thrown a pitch yet for the Mets in 2021 coming off Tommy John surgery. There is hope for Syndergaard to pitch and that his next outing might just be with the big club. The Mets, for the most part, are back to as much as full health as they can be, aside from the men that went on the IL with season ending injuries. Weather Forecast
According to the Weather Channel, Tuesday at Fenway Park will be cloudy, with a slight chance of sunshine, high of 73, and a chilly 54 at night. Bring something warm if you’re planning on attending the game this evening. Wednesday does not look much better weather wise, high of 79 and a low of 64, but the evening will be more pleasent at game time. No rain in the forecast, which is always a win for New England baseball. Play ball!

Pete Abraham @peteabe · 3h Since July 18 (when he got hurt playing first base), Christian Arroyo has played nine games (AAA and MLB) and gone 1 for 22.
Sox have delicate balance over the next 12 days to get him ready for the postseason while knowing Iglesias is best suited to make sure they get there.
Update: Arroyo activated and Lopez returned to AAA.
