Red Sox, Christian Vázquez victims of controversial call as catcher drops ball on transfer, nullifying strikeout: “I felt like I had 9 lives,’ Aaron Judge says Updated: 3:41 a.m. | Published: 2:33 a.m.
By Chris Cotillo | ccotillo@MassLive.com
BOSTON -- The Red Sox were soundly beat by the Yankees over the last three days at Fenway Park, but it appears Boston was the victim of some bad luck late in Sunday’s loss, too.
With two men in scoring position and Sox leading, 3-2, in the eighth, reliever Adam Ottavino appeared to strike out Aaron Judge, only to have the at-bat extended on a controversial call by home plate umpire Joe West. On a 1-2 pitch, Judge tipped an Ottavino fastball into the glove of catcher Christian Vázquez, who then dropped the ball while trying to transfer it into his throwing hand. West ruled the play a foul ball, allowing Judge to stay alive. The slugger then made the Red Sox pay on the next pitch, lacing a two-run, go-ahead double into center field.
Judge should have been out twice during the at-bat, first on a foul pop-up that Bobby Dalbec couldn’t corral near the stands on the first base side of the field and again on the dropped third strike.
“I thought I was going to be done on the first foul ball that dropped in foul territory then the one I foul-tipped and dropped behind the plate,” Judge said. “I felt like a cat. I felt like I had nine lives up there.”
Vázquez, who was catching his 568th career major-league game, said he had never had a similar situation play out during a game. If he had held onto the ball -- or perhaps been slower with his transfer -- Judge would have struck out and Giancarlo Stanton would have come to the plate with two outs.
“I caught the ball and dropped it on the transfer,” Vázquez said. “That’s the first time that has happened to me so I don’t know how to react.”
Vázquez immediately asked the Red Sox’ dugout to challenge the play in hopes the call would be reversed. But Major League Baseball rules dictate that the play was a “catch/no catch in the infield” play and is not reviewable via instant replay.
“I think they should get together and get a better call there,” Vázquez said.
Even before the almost-strikeout, Judge put up quite the battle against Ottavino, his former teammate with the Yankees. Ottavino got ahead 1-2 before Judge fouled off four straight pitches (including the controversial tip) then drove a fastball that one-hopped the wall in center.
“I just tried to think with him a little bit,” Ottavino said. “I was able to get ahead in the count and then I just tried to trust my fastball for the most part and throw as hard as I could. Just couldn’t overcome it. I think the last pitch probably wasn’t a very good pitch.”
Stanton, who hit the game-winning homer Saturday afternoon, then gave the Yankees some insurance, smashing an Ottavino slider over the Green Monster to make it a 6-3 game. But Judge at-bat -- and all the drama during it -- was the turning point of the game.
“I just wasn’t able to overcome that,” Ottavino said. “Yeah, that one hurt.”

All-star closer mentally and physically dead, top setup man having a brutal second half and September, best reliever on the injured list, and best lefty unavailable and getting an MRI. Besides that, no problem.
There is nothing you can do. You go to the pen and pray right now. There is no right and wrong decisions. It's nothing but land mines.

Red Sox Nation Stats @rsnstats · 5h #RedSox Manager Alex Cora: "We got swept by the #Yankees. We're in the 2nd wild card. We played some competitive games, but we didn't get the job done. It's very simple. It's not what we wanted…but it didn't happen."
#RedSox Manager Cora on #Yankees Giancarlo Stanton: "We did a good job with him early in the season…He's in one of those streaks right now where he's locked in…He's one of the best players in the big league…He was locked in this weekend and he did an amazing job."
#RedSox Manager Cora on #Yankees now vs earlier in the season: "Some guys are swinging the bats better now than they were early in the season…it's baseball. At the end, we play 19 games, we won 10…[and] that 10-9 might mean something in the upcoming days."

Lou Merloni @loumerloni · 1h If they make the playoffs, which I still think they will, they will get bounced. They are not perfect. They will not win the WS. They’re flawed just like Celtics and Bruins were. Just like Pats. Difference is, I will NEVER tell you that you shouldn’t watch those other teams.
Do you feel that way because you listen to people that have NOTHING positive to say about a team that will make the playoffs in a year where it was a rebuild from Day 1? Half the league doesn’t make the playoffs in MLB like others. 1/3 does. It’s actually an accomplishment

Lou Merloni @loumerloni · 27m No Taylor. No Whitlock. These guys don’t follow the team, he doesn’t know. He had to stretch him out. Their pen is in a real bad place after being locked in 4-5 days ago with a couple guys that were throwing the ball real well for them on IL

Chris Cotillo @chriscotillo · 44m The Red Sox begin a road trip tomorrow that could last 6 nights (if WC game is home or they don’t make it), 8 nights (if they lose WC game on road) or 11 nights (if they make ALDS). Could be BAL-DC-NY/TOR-TB-BOS.
The uncertainty is fun, unless you have to pack for this trip…which is what I am currently doing.

Jeff Passan @jeffpassan · 30m THREAD: If the Blue Jays take 2 of 3 from the Yankees and sweep the O’s, the Yankees take 2 of 3 from the Rays, and the Red Sox win 4 of 6 against Baltimore and Washington, there will be a three-way tie for two AL wild card spots.
I love chaos.
Here's how it would work. (1/5)
In the case of a three-way tie for two spots, the tiebreakers go like this: Club A hosts Club B in the first game, and the winner gets the first AL wild card spot. The loser then travels to Club C for the second game, and the winner gets the second AL wild card spot. (2/5)

The Stanton homers will get the headlines, but the offense has come up really small this weekend, too. #RedSox Yup.
This series sucked. Shame on the Red Sox.
