Chris Cotillo @chriscotillo · 5h Alex Cora on the Red Sox offense: “We had a horrible month.”
Christian Arroyo has left calf tightness. Red Sox say nothing major. Will know more tomorrow.
Cora on the last play: "We got the bunt we wanted and we didn't make the play. I think he got caught up, got stuck, but wasn't able to turn around and he threw it away. It's something we work on. I know he feels really bad about it. But it's a play we have to make."
J.D. Martinez said he hopes to play tomorrow but is super frustrated about missing 7 of 10 games with Boston's offense sputtering.
Christian Arroyo said his calf has been bothering him after playing on turf and he aggravated it tonight but thinks he's fine.

Red Sox Stats @redsoxstats · 9h Dalbec getting a start against a starter with a fastball that averages 92.5 mph and has hit 94 mph only once this year.
Dalbec vs 94 or slower 41-151, 10 HR, .272 BA, .563 SLG
Dalbec vs 95 or faster 11-83, 2 HR, .133 BA, .241 SLG
Feels like it's time for Bobby to go to AAA to reset. Sox facing mostly RHP coming up, including some studs, so you're going to go with a lot of Cordero I'd think... a problem is, there's no late defensive replacement for Franchy now that Shaw is gone if Bob is sent down.

Red Sox Stats @redsoxstats · 6h If I were the Sox I'd name Strahm the full time closer and work backwards off that decision. His stuff is good enough, not going to put people on base with walks often, and he can pitch to both handedness.
I know the Sox keep talking about thinking Barnes is close to finding something and working him back to the end of games eventually, but watching his stuff, it just doesn't seem close to being good enough for anything of importance

Red Sox Stats @redsoxstats · 5h Which was the worst one, Kiermaier's homer, Springer's homer, or losing with 1-run in an Eovaldi masterpiece against Baltimore? Horrendous.
Yankees up 6.5 games on the Sox with 24 more runs scored and 20 fewer runs allowed in April.

Red Sox @ Orioles Sunday, 1rst May 2022 1pm @ OPACY
Pivetta 0-0/8.27
Lyles 1-2/540
Red Sox, Orioles in search of offense in finale FLM
While the Boston Red Sox finished April with a slightly better record than the Baltimore Orioles, the AL East foes share the common trait of constantly being involved in close games.
The first two games of their season series were close, and both teams seek a little more breathing room Sunday afternoon in the finale of a three-game series in Baltimore.
Boston ended April with an underwhelming 9-13 record, a mark due to them losing four extra innings games on the road and eight of 14 decided by two runs or fewer.
Baltimore ended April with 14 losses in its first 21 contests. The Orioles are 6-8 in games decided by two runs or fewer and have split eight one-run games.
Baltimore is in position for the series win after getting a 2-1 victory on Saturday night. Speedster Jorge Mateo scored the winning run in the 10th inning on a throwing error by Boston reliever Hirokazu Sawamura, who tried to get the out at third on a bunt by Robinson Chirinos.
The Orioles tied the game in the eighth on a two-strike single by Anthony Santander on a night when they were no-hit for 5 2/3 innings by Nathan Eovaldi. They were also without Trey Mancini, who is day-to-day with a rib injury.
Baltimore snapped a five-game skid, thanks to the efforts of six relievers who combined on 5 1/3 scoreless innings after Spenser Watkins went the first 4 2/3 innings.
"We pitched extremely well," Baltimore manager Brandon Hyde said. "It started off with Spenser. The rest of the guys, they all had great stuff. Just a gutty performance by our pitching staff."
Boston is 3-6 on its 10-game road trip. The Red Sox have been held to three runs or fewer in six games on the trip. They stranded 10 runners after Xander Bogaerts' RBI single three batters into Saturday's game.
"At the end of the day, we have to be better," Boston manager Alex Cora said. "If we want to compete and be the team that we envision, we have to hit."
The Red Sox also continued to play without J.D. Martinez, whose groin injury has kept him out for three straight games. He is expected to return Sunday.
Baltimore's Jordan Lyles (1-2, 5.40 ERA), who allowed three homers Tuesday at Yankee Stadium, hopes to keep the ball in the ballpark this time. Lyles led the AL last year with 38 homers allowed when he was with Texas. He allowed one homer in his first three outings before the barrage by the Yankees.
Lyles is 1-1 with a 6.10 ERA in four career starts against the Red Sox. Lyles is hoping for similar results as his previous start against the Red Sox, when he pitched seven innings of one-run ball in a 10-1 win at Fenway Park on Aug. 21.
Nick Pivetta (0-3, 8.27), who is 0-6 with a 6.61 ERA in his past 12 appearances dating to last season, goes for the Red Sox.
Pivetta is 6-1 with a 3.60 ERA in eight career outings against the Orioles. He is 4-1 with a 3.86 ERA in five career starts in Baltimore.

Bill Koch @billkoch25 · 6h
Asking this Red Sox bullpen to get 12-15 outs minus Garrett Whitlock is quite an exercise. Again, even without Whitlock, the BP ERA is still 3.47. That would still rank #7 in the AL. And even without Whitlock, the BP still has a BP with 9 guys with an ERA of 3.86 or lower. We don't have a lock-down closer, but the BP has performed okay. For the umpteenth time, pitching has not been the problem.

and how sustainable will it be and there are guys down in that pen that Cora does not want to march out in tight situations period and the so called depth down in AAA is not coming to save the day again this team was 2 games away from going to the WS last year the front office did very little to improve it If the offense starts scoring runs like they should, that would take a lot of pressure off the pitching staff. The pitchers have had to pitch a lot of high stress innings due to the tight scores in most of the games. The pitchers will still have to perform, but being able to pitch with a little bit of a cushion would make a difference. And it would allow Cora to use some of those other guys that he's a little reluctant to use right now.

Boston Red Sox should keep Garrett Whitlock in the bullpen, and Saturday’s implosion showed us why | Chris CotilloUpdated: Apr. 30, 2022, 11:38 p.m. | Published: Apr. 30, 2022, 11:36 p.m. A lot of blame continues to be put on the bullpen, but any time you hold the opposition to 2 runs in 10 innings, you would expect to win the game. That's a really well-pitched game, which I would take 7 days a week.

Jon Couture @joncouture · 5h The #RedSox had six one-run losses and four walkoff losses in April.
Extrapolated over a full season, you're tuning out by Patriots mini camp. The Red Sox are intent on breaking my heart this season.
That said, six 1-run losses, along with two 2-run losses and one 3-run loss, screams of a team that has somewhat been a victim of King Randomness. It's not like we're getting blown out in these losses, (though we also haven't been blowing the opposition out in our wins).

Game 23: Red Sox at Orioles lineups and pregame notes as J.D. Martinez returnsBy Amin Touri Globe Staff,Updated May 1, 2022, 1 hour ago With the bats still quiet and the Red Sox struggling to get out of their own way elsewhere, they still have a chance to take the weekend series with the Orioles on Sunday afternoon. Nick Pivetta is on the hill for Boston on Sunday with hopes of righting the ship both for the club and for himself — the righthander has allowed 15 earned runs in just 16 ⅓ innings this season, a far cry from his steady performance in 2022. Chris Cotillo @chriscotillo · 1h Red Sox are likely to keep 14 pitchers when rosters shrink to 26, Cora said.
So this means Sox will be optioning one pitcher and one position player today or tomorrow.
Jonathan Araúz (COVID list) beginning a rehab assignment at Worcester today. He can be there for up to 20 days. Red Sox will need to clear a 40-man spot when he returns, so expect him to be rehabbing a while.

Lou Merloni @loumerloni · 3h I feel better having Whitlock in the pen than in the Rotation. There I said it. Houck is a capable starter and Whitlock is more of a lockdown guy out of pen to secure wins.
With that said, it doesn’t matter if the Sox continue to score a run or two a game.

so vazquez with 2 out in the 2nd slaps a double to rf Davis comes up and smokes a single and Vazquez stops at 3B he may be one the dumber runners on this team, and that is saying something and of course, Story k's looking
Chris Cotillo @chriscotillo · 23m It's unclear why Christian Vázquez wasn't off on contact with two outs. I don't think he knew how many outs there were.
Story strikes out and slams his helmet. Frustrations mounting.
Red Sox Stats @redsoxstats · 28m JBJ 1 for his last 27 with 2 BB and 6 K
