Xander Bogaerts belts homer, 2-run double to lead Boston Red Sox to win over Athletics; Nathan Eovaldi K’s 8 Published: Jun. 04, 2022, 12:56 a.m.

OAKLAND, Calif. — Xander Bogaerts not only set the Red Sox franchise record Friday for most games (1,094) played at shortstop. He also homered.
Bogaerts’ 389-foot blast to left field gave Boston a 1-0 lead in the fourth inning. He also delivered a two-run double in the ninth.
The Red Sox won 7-2 over the Athletics here at RingCentral Coliseum.
Boston took a 2-0 lead in the fourth inning when Franchy Cordero doubled home Alex Verdugo who had walked. Cordero’s hit to right field left his bat at 103.4 mph and scored Verdugo from first base.
Trevor Story extended the lead to 4-0 in the sixth inning with a two-run double that left his bat at 106.4 mph and traveled 372 feet to left field.
The Athletics scored two runs in the eighth inning to cut it to 4-2. Jed Lowrie stroked a two-run double against Matt Strahm.
But the Red Sox scored three runs in the ninth on Rafael Devers’ RBI double and Bogaerts’ two-run double.
Eovaldi pitched 6 scoreless innings
Nathan Eovaldi — who was coming off his first ever complete game in his previous start — pitched 6 scoreless innings. He has thrown 10 ⅔ scoreless innings dating back to the fifth inning last start.
Eovaldi allowed four hits and one walk while striking out eight.
He recorded 16 swings-and-misses: six with his four-seam fastball, five with his splitter, three with his curveball and two with his slider.
Dalbec makes big pick
Bobby Dalbec made an excellent pick in the dirt to end the bottom of the fourth inning. Chad Pinder grounded out to Xander Bogaerts who bounced his throw to first base.

Xander Bogaerts kisses Boston Red Sox’s Bobby Dalbec after pick; ‘He’s kissed me a few times. That was the biggest one’ Updated: Jun. 04, 2022, 2:11 a.m. | Published: Jun. 04, 2022, 2:09 a.m.

OAKLAND, Calif. — Red Sox shortstop Xander Bogaerts made sure to thank first baseman Bobby Dalbec for picking his throw in the dirt for the final out of the fourth inning.
“I had to go over there and give him a kiss,” Bogaerts said.
Dalbec said Bogaerts kissed the side of his head.
“He’s kissed me a few times,” Dalbec said, laughing. “That was the biggest one.”
The Red Sox won 7-2 over the Athletics here at RingCentral Coliseum on Friday behind Bogaerts who homered and delivered a two-run double.
But Bogaerts said there was no bigger play than Dalbec’s pick. Chad Pinder grounded to Bogaerts who bounced his throw to Dalbec at first base with runners at second and third and two outs.
The Red Sox were ahead 2-0 at the time. Dalbec’s scoop saved two runs from scoring.
“That was huge,” Bogaerts said. I’ve been lately putting him in bad spots and hoping for him to pick every one of the bad throws that I make. And I’ve got to do better than that. The situation, two guys on. Second and third. It was an in between hop. I would say that was the play of the night. Forget the homer or anything like that. The game could have gone sideways quick if that one went behind.”
Dalbec knows it was a critical play to make with Boston ahead 2-0. It also was just a two-run game heading into the ninth when the Red Sox broke it open.
“All that room back there (in foul territory), that’s probably two runs,” Dalbec said.
Red Sox manager Alex Cora said, “The pick by Bobby, that was great. The play by Franchy (Cordero) before that down the line was great. In between hop. Tough hop for Bobby. You saw the reaction from Xander. He gave him a kiss in the dugout. He works hard ... That was a game-changer right there. If that ball goes by, it’s two runs, man at second, probably at third. So great play by him.”

Boston Red Sox’s Xander Bogaerts: ‘I never thought any of this would have been possible’ Published: Jun. 04, 2022, 2:38 a.m.
By Christopher Smith | csmith@masslive.com
OAKLAND, Calif. — Xander Bogaerts not only set the Red Sox franchise record Friday for most games played (1,094) at shortstop. He also celebrated with a homer and two-run double.
The Red Sox won 7-2 over the Athletics here at RingCentral Coliseum.
“On a personal level, it’s crazy,” Bogaerts said. “I’m very blessed to be in that conversation. I never would have imagined or expected any of that when I made my debut or even when I signed here. It’s been a long road but a lot of happy moments for sure.”
Bogaerts passed Everett Scott for most games played at shortstop. He’ll set another record Saturday when he passes Scott for the most starts at shortstop (1,082) in franchise history.
“We’ll wait for the celebration tomorrow because tomorrow is another big day for him,” manager Alex Cora said. “Just proud of him. Just showing up every day, it means a lot to us and it means a lot to his teammates. It means a lot to the city of Boston. He’s a humble kid from the islands. He just wants to play baseball. But I think with time, he’s going to realize how important he is for us, for the Red Sox, and actually for baseball. This kid is so consistent in everything he does. I’m glad he had a great night.”
Bogaerts’ 389-foot blast to left field gave Boston a 1-0 lead in the fourth inning. His two-run double in the ninth put Boston ahead 7-2.
“I never thought any of this would have been possible,” Bogaerts said. “I remember when I came up, there was a lot of talk — maybe I’ve got to switch positions.”
Bogaerts said he also heard the same talk throughout the minor leagues.
“I’ve got to give a lot of credit to myself, all the coaches that have helped me along the way, through the ups and downs,” Bogaerts said. “Obviously a family that’s right in your corner through all the good and the bad. ... I’ve definitely got to give huge credit to the coaching staff and the organization for believing in me and giving me that opportunity.”

Boston Red Sox vs.Oakland Athletics Saturday, June 4, 2022 at 4:07pm EDT Written by David Delano
The Oakland A's (20-33) will host the Boston Red Sox (24-27) on Saturday in the second game of a three-game series. Friday night's game was not complete at the time of this preview, but the Red Sox were leading 2-0 in the sixth inning.
Red Sox playing their way back into contention After getting off to an 11-20 start, the Red Sox have won 13 of their last 20 games. They entered Friday's game three games under .500 but are just two games out of the final wild-card spot. The Red Sox bullpen has a 3.91 ERA which is 17th in MLB and in the field the team is seven with +19 defensive runs saved.
The Sox offense is third in MLB with a .258 batting average, seventh scoring 4.8 runs per game, and 18th with 49 home runs. The pitching staff is 15th with a 3.87 ERA. On the season, Pivetta is 2-2 with a 3.67 ERA in five road starts.
Blackburn looks to bounce back from first loss The Oakland A's have lost six of their last seven games, which all were on their home field. Blackburn allowed four runs in 6 2/3 innings on Monday in a 5-1 loss to Houston, which was his first defeat of the season. The 28-year-old right-hander is peaking this season, after breaking into the big leagues with Oakland in 2017, he still is just 11-12 with a 4.73 ERA in his career. This season, Blackburn is 1-1 with a 3.57 ERA in four home starts.

1st & 2nd, two outs, and Dalbec gets picked off of 1st? I was not happy about that. He was caught sleeping over there.

Julian McWilliams @byjulianmack · 3h This Sox bullpen takes the Celtics "never easy" approach except without the Celtics' talent. Gutsy. Once again, while we could definitely use some BP reinforcement, the fact that our pen gave up 2 runs is not usually an issue when the offense scores like it should. Granted, the Sox scored 3 in the top of the 9th, so the game was a lot closer when we gave up the 2 runs, but the point still stands. This team was built on the philosophy that the pitchers would keep the team in the game and the offense would come through more often than not. Now that the offense is seemingly out of its rut, we should win a lot more games with the same pen that we've had all season.

Injuries & Moves: JBJ goes on paternity leaveJune 3rd, 2022 Keep track of the Red Sox’s recent transactions and injury updates throughout the season. LATEST NEWS June 3: OF Jackie Bradley Jr. to the paternity list; OF Jarren Duran recalled The Red Sox will be without one of their key defenders to begin the West Coast road trip, as Bradley was placed on the paternity list before Friday's series opener. Jarren Duran will join the club in Oakland in a corresponding move. Red Sox manager Alex Cora said Duran's flight was scheduled to land about an hour before first pitch, and the team activated him just before the game. With two right-handers expected to start for Oakland on Saturday and Sunday, Cora said Duran will likely play in the final two games of the series. -- Sonja Chen • All Red Sox transactions INJURY UPDATES 10-day and 15-day IL RHP Matt Barnes (right shoulder inflammation) Expected return: June 15, at earliest Barnes felt discomfort in his shoulder while warming up on May 30 and was placed on the injured list the next day. The right-hander had an MRI on June 2, but manager Alex Cora said he didn't know the results yet. He expected Barnes will head to Fort Myers, Fla., to get work in this weekend. -- Sonja Chen (Last updated: June 3)) I'd like to get snarky about JBJ trying to time these things better, but he is a solid dude and family man. I will leave it 'congrats'. I don't want Barnes back until he has a full FB back. Even then, this could be mental, and he might never recover, but he is 100% useless. Even our low-end guys are capable of contributing something useful.

Adam Pellerin @adampellerin · 3h Matt Strahm made just his second appearance in the last two weeks.
First 17 appearances: 14.1 IP, 3 ER, 7 hits, 3BB Last two appearances: 0.2 IP 4 ER, 6 hits, 2BB BR says it is 1 BB in his last 2 appearances. But that's not important. What's important is that Adam left off HRs and Ks. HRs, Ks, and BBs are general what determine your ERA. The regular hits will eventually settle in at about a .300 BABIP. If Adam doesn't include HRs (0), and the K/W (2/1), then the rest of the numbers are far less important.

Julian McWilliams @byjulianmack · 3h This Sox bullpen takes the Celtics "never easy" approach except without the Celtics' talent. Gutsy. I think that's just managing limited resources. When you have a big lead, you have to use your low-end guys, so your better guys will be available for the closer games.

Bogaerts also credited his family who has been in his corner, he said. I mentioned this elsewhere; the dude never says the wrong thing.

Never give up until the numbers say that you have to.I mean, we aren't even close to a decision point, and some wanted to give up 2-3 weeks ago. FWIW, BB is like the stock market. While you need to pay attention (re-allocate) as you age, it doesn't help to over-emphasize the day-to-day activities. And just like BB, the columns by the so-called experts should generally be ignored.

Game 53: Red Sox at Athletics lineups and notes as Jarren Duran leads offBy Amin Touri Globe Staff,Updated June 4, 2022, 1 hour ago After a disappointing homestand against the the Orioles and Reds, the Red Sox opened their 10-game West Coast road trip with a comfortable win on Friday and will try and keep things rolling against the Athletics Saturday afternoon.
