Boston Red Sox notebook: Jackie Bradley Jr., wife Erin welcome third child; Jarren Duran ‘hitting the ball hard’ Updated: Jun. 04, 2022, 9:22 p.m. | Published: Jun. 04, 2022, 9:18 p.m.

OAKLAND, Calif. — Jackie Bradley Jr. returned home Friday for the birth of his third child.
“They had the baby,” manager Alex Cora said Saturday before the Red Sox beat the Athletics 8-0 here at RingCentral Coliseum. “Everything went well. Everything is great. We just got the pictures.”
Erin gave birth to a girl, Elle. The Bradleys now have three children, two daughters and a son who is the middle child.
Bradley will remain on paternity leave and likely rejoin the Red Sox sometime during their series in Anaheim.
For now, Jarren Duran will continue to take Bradley’s spot on the active roster. Duran went 2-for-5 from the leadoff spot Saturday. He also had a 106 mph lineout to begin the game.
“The first pitch of the game, he crushed it,” Cora said. “105 off the bat or something like that. You can tell, he’s very dynamic. Just seeing him run the bases is always good. Played a solid right (field) today. He’s in a better place. That line drive the other way, that line drive up the middle, we didn’t see that last year. He was hitting the ball in the air. A lot of flyballs and getting under the ball. Now he’s on time and hitting the ball hard and that was cool to see.”
Story’s ‘game-changing’ defense
Trevor Story made another defensive gem Saturday. He saved a run playing on the right field grass while in the shift. He leaped high to catch Seth Brown’s 101.2-mph liner with a runner at third base in the fourth.
“He’s feeling a lot more comfortable at second base,” Cora said. “He’s a game-changer. He’s a good defender. He understands the game. Just like hitting, defense is contagious. And the fact that the other guys are talking defense is very important.”
Why is Strahm struggling?
Matt Strahm’s ERA has jumped from 1.88 to 4.20 over his past two outings.
He gave up four runs (three earned) on five hits while recording just one out May 27 vs. the Orioles.
He inherited a runner with one out in the eighth and the Red Sox ahead 4-0 over the A’s on Friday. He surrendered a walk to Ramón Laureano after beginning with a strikeout. He then gave up a two-run double to Jed Lowrie.
Cora said Strahm is probably a bit rusty from not pitching much lately. He has appeared in just two games since an outing May 20.
“He hasn’t pitched a lot, first of all,” Cora said. “Yesterday, I think it was fastball middle-middle to Jed and he beat him to the spot. I think it’s more we haven’t been able to use him. He had that tough one against Baltimore. Not too much hard contact. The walk yesterday. The 3-2 counts. So I think as far as like location, he’s been off his last two. But at the same time he hasn’t pitched that much.”
Bogaerts the captain?
Captains aren’t common in baseball. The Giants named one in Brandon Belt.
“I don’t know if we have to put a C on Xander’s jersey but everybody knows the consistency, the way he approaches the game, the way he cares about winning, what he brings to the equation not only on the field but off the field,” Cora said.
Xander Bogaerts set a record Saturday for most starts at shortstop (1,082) in franchise history.
Cora called Bogaerts “the most consistent person in the organization.”
“We don’t have to put a C on that uniform,” Cora said. “Everybody knows he’s the one that takes care of people in that clubhouse, takes care of people on the field, takes care of the manager. Just putting that name in the lineup, it makes you feel comfortable that we’re going to have a good player in the lineup on a daily basis. If you want to name him the captain without putting the C, you can go ahead and do it.”

Hill 1-3/4.85
Montas 2-5/3.20
Boston Red Sox vs.Oakland Athletics Sunday, June 5, 2022 at 4:07pm EDT Written by Chris King
A pair of teams from the American League conclude a series out on the west coast in Oaktown. The Boston Red Sox are on the road as they finish up a three-game series with the Oakland A’s Sunday afternoon. In the opening game of the series Friday night, it was the Red Sox earning a 4-2 victory to ensure a shot at winning the series no matter how things play out Saturday. Will Boston continue their upward trend or will the A’s find a way to get the victory on getaway day for a rare home victory? This article was published prior to the conclusion of the middle game of the series Saturday at the RingCentral Coliseum.
Boston Red Sox Hoping to Climb Toward .500 Boston won their second straight game as they hit their way past the A’s to take the opener of this series. The Red Sox entered Saturday fourth in the AL East, 12.5 games behind the Yankees for the top spot in the division race. Against Oakland Friday, Boston got two hits each from Enrique Hernandez, Trevor Story (two RBI) and Xander Bogaerts (run, three RBI) in the win. Bogaerts hit his sixth homer of the season in the victory. Nathan Eovaldi (3-2) earned the win on the mound as he threw six scoreless innings, allowing four hits with one walk and eight strikeouts before turning things over to the bullpen.
Rich Hill is on the hill as he makes his 10th start of the season for the Red Sox in this contest. He comes in 1-3 with a 4.85 ERA, a 1.282 WHIP, 11 walks and 29 strikeouts over 39 innings of work this season. Hill took the loss in his previous start, which came Monday at home against Baltimore. He threw four innings, allowing six runs on seven hits with two walks and five strikeouts in a game the Red Sox dropped by a 10-0 count. In his last three starts, Hill is 0-2 with a 9.82 ERA, a 1.73 WHIP, four walks and eight strikeouts over 11 innings of work. Hill makes his 9th career appearance and fifth start against the A’s in this contest. He comes in 1-2 with a 3.00 ERA, a 1.048 WHIP, 13 walks and 25 strikeouts over 21 innings against them. Hill is 3-4 with a 3.45 ERA, a 1.286 WHIP, 25 walks and 46 strikeouts over 44.1 innings in 12 career appearances, 10 starts, at the RingCentral Coliseum.
Oakland A’s Trying to Earn Rare Victory Oakland lost their fourth straight and their seventh in the last eight games as they were drubbed soundly by Boston. The A’s entered Saturday last in the AL West, 15 games behind the Astros for the top spot in the division. In Friday’s contest, Oakland finished with six hits with Jed Lowrie (two RBI) the lone player with two. The A’s went two of nine with runners in scoring position in the loss. James Kaprielian (0-3) took the loss on the mound as he was roughed up for four runs on five hits with two walks and one strikeout in 5.1 innings. The bullpen sputtered in the ninth, giving up three runs after the A’s closed to within 4-2.
Frankie Montas is on the hill for his 12th start of the season for the A’s in this contest. He comes in 2-5 with a 3.20 ERA, a 0.99 WHIP, 15 walks and 71 strikeouts over 64.2 innings of work this season. Montas took the loss in his last start, which came Tuesday at home against Houston. He threw seven innings, allowing two runs on seven hits with no walks and five strikeouts in a game the A’s dropped 3-1. In his last three starts, Montas is 0-1 with a 1.72 ERA, a 0.89 WHIP, two walks and 18 strikeouts over 15.2 innings of work. Montas makes his fifth career appearance and third start against the Red Sox in this contest. He comes in 0-1 with a 1.98 ERA, a 1.61 WHIP, six walks and 13 strikeouts over 13.2 innings of work against them. Montas is 17-14 with a 3.41 ERA, a 1.196 WHIP, 77 walks and 291 strikeouts over 266.2 innings over 55 career appearances, 42 starts, at the RingCentral Coliseum.

I'd like to get snarky about JBJ trying to time these things better, but he is a solid dude and family man. I will leave it 'congrats'. I don't want Barnes back until he has a full FB back. Even then, this could be mental, and he might never recover, but he is 100% useless. Even our low-end guys are capable of contributing something useful. Barnes' IL placement sounds like a phantom injury if I ever heard one. But yes, he needs to get it figured out in AAA before returning to the team.
Ditto on JBJ. It's hard not to root for the guy both on and off the field.

It's amazing how quickly things can change in baseball. Never give up until the numbers say that you have to. I mean, we aren't even close to a decision point, and some wanted to give up 2-3 weeks ago. FWIW, BB is like the stock market. While you need to pay attention (re-allocate) as you age, it doesn't help to over-emphasize the day-to-day activities. And just like BB, the columns by the so-called experts should generally be ignored. That's the problem. People tend to react and overreact to very small samples. Baseball takes a lot of patience.

This is my type of game, so far. Everyone but JD has gotten on base, and JD is someone I ain't worried about. 6 good innings so far from Pivetta, with only 83 pitches. Try to get one more good inning, and then turn over to BP. It will be interesting to see if we turn it over to Houck in the 9th. Good game all around. Pivetta has been a little bit on the fortunate side, but seriously, the dude has been awesome in his last 6 games.

We actually got lucky here. Had he been a little more consistent, he might still be with the Phillies.

Game 54: Red Sox at Athletics lineups and notesBy Amin Touri Globe Staff,Updated June 5, 2022, 20 minutes ago The Red Sox can finish off a sweep to start their West Coast road trip on Sunday with a chance to break out the brooms against the Athletics. Veteran lefthander Rich Hill will look to bounce back from a shaky start against the Orioles for his fifth career start — and ninth appearance overall — against Oakland. He held the Athletics scoreless over six innings of work in his last appearance in the Bay Area for the Rays last May. Related: Red Sox pitching prospect Bryan Mata throws two hitless innings in first appearance in almost three years Frankie Montas will try and stave off the sweep for Oakland. Despite a 3.20 ERA, the righthander has a 2-5 record without much help; in his last two starts he’s gone seven innings and allowed two runs or fewer, both in losing efforts. Montas had a 2.31 ERA in six starts in May, but went 0-3. Lineups RED SOX (26-27): 1. Jarren Duran (L) DH 2. Enrique Hernandez (R) CF 3. Rafael Devers (L) 3B 4. Xander Bogaerts (R) SS 5. Alex Verdugo (L) LF 6. Trevor Story (R) 2B 7. Franchy Cordero (L) RF 8. Christian Vazquez (R) C 9. Bobby Dalbec (R) 1B Pitching: LHP Rich Hill (1-3, 4.85 ERA) ATHLETICS (20-35): 1. Chad Pinder (R) LF 2. Elvis Andrus (R) SS 3. Jed Lowrie (S) DH 4. Ramon Laureano (R) RF 5. Christian Bethancourt (R) C 6. Seth Brown (L) 1B 7. Sheldon Neuse (R) 2B 8. Kevin Smith (R) 3B 9. Cristian Pache (R) CF Pitching: RHP Frankie Montas (2-5, 3.20 ERA) Time: 4:07 p.m. TV, radio: NESN, WEEI-FM 93.7 Red Sox vs. Montas: Bogaerts 1-6, Devers 4-6, Hernández 0-2, Martinez 2-6, Plawecki 1-4, Story 2-6, Verdugo 1-3, Vázquez 0-4 Athletics vs. Hill: Andrus 1-6, Kemp 0-2, Laureano 1-6, Lowrie 2-7, Murphy 1-5, Pinder 0-1 Stat of the day: The Athletics have failed to provide Montas with more than one run of support in over half his starts this season. Notes: The A’s will try and avoid getting swept in their second straight three-game series and fifth time overall this season. Oakland was shut out for the seventh time this season on Saturday in an 8-0 loss to the Red Sox, who have won three in a row. The A’s are an MLB-worst 7-22 at home ... Montas is 0-1 with 1.98 ERA in four career appearances against Boston, including two starts ... Hill went 16 straight innings without allowing a run over parts of five starts earlier this season, but the 42-year-old hasn’t been as sharp in recent outings. He gave up six runs and seven hits — including two homers — over four innings in a 10-0 loss to the Baltimore Orioles on Monday ... Rafael Devers is 4-for-6 with two doubles in his career off Montas. Devers is 5-for-17 with three doubles and three RBIs in his last four games overall ... The Red Sox activated Jarren Duran on Friday and placed Jackie Bradley Jr. on paternity leave. Duran had two hits and started in right field on Saturday, the first time he has played that position in the majors.
