Boston Red Sox (27-27) vs. Los Angeles Angels (27-28)
The Boston Red Sox will remain in California to take on the Los Angeles Angels following the series against the Oakland Athletics. They are hoping for the fifth consecutive win, while the Angels are looking to snap a losing streak after coming home from road series against the Yankees and Phillies.
These American League rivals have met three times this season and the Angels won two of those duels – all three played in Boston. The Angels are -125 favorites in this one, while the total is set at 9 runs.
Red Sox completed the sweep of the Athletics The Boston Red Sox swept the Oakland Athletics in a three-game series and now will stay on the road to face the Los Angeles Angels and Seattle Mariners before returning home for another series against Oakland. The Red Sox now improved to a 27-27 record and are looking to have over .500 following this series in L.A.
Franchy Cordero blasted a three-run homer off Frankie Montas in the sixth inning to help the Red Sox secure a 5-2 victory over the A’s, while Rafael Devers homered and drove in two runs as Boston returned to .500 (27-27) for the first time since April 22. Rich Hill (2-3) registered a win after pitching for 6.0 innings, allowing one run on three hits with 5 K and no walks. John Schreiber recorded his sixth hold of the season, while Tyler Danish and Ryan Brasier got the job done for the Red Sox.
Michael Wacha (3-1) will start for the ninth time when the Red Sox meet the Angels on Monday. The 30-year-old right-hander currently carries a 2.43 ERA and 1.01 WHIP with a 27/14 K/BB ratio over 40.2 innings of work. Wacha already faced the Angels this year and got a win after allowing no runs on three hits with 2 K and 2 BB in 5.2 innings.
Angels are in problems The Los Angeles Angels are going through the worst period of the season as they lost each of the previous 11 games. They were swept away by the Toronto Blue Jays, New York Yankees, and Philadelphia Phillies, and now are hoping to at least get one victory in a four-game series against the Red Sox.
The Angels were close to defeating the Phillies in Philadelphia and had a 6-2 lead entering the bottom eighth, but the hosts scored four runs in that period and then added three more in the ninth to secure a 9-7 win. Closer Raisel Iglesias (1-4) took a loss after allowing three runs on three hits. Patrick Sandoval (3-1) started the game but lasted only 4.2 innings. He let two runs on four hits with 4 K and 4 BB.
Noah Syndergaard (4-3) will be on the mound when the Angels meet the Red Sox on Monday. The 29-year-old right-hander hopes to bounce back from a disastrous outing against the New York Yankees in his previous start when he allowed five runs over 2.1 innings. Syndergaard has a 4.02 ERA and 1.21 WHIP with 27 K and 9 BB in 40.1 innings. He took a loss in his start against the Red Sox this season after allowing three runs on eight hits with 3 K and 1 BB in 7.0 innings.

RED SOX NOTEBOOK ‘Be you’: Jarren Duran takes Alex Cora’s message to heart in bringing his brand of dynamic play to the Red Sox lineup By Julian McWilliams Globe Staff,Updated June 5, 2022, 6:02 p.m.
OAKLAND, Calif. — Jarren Duran didn’t waste any time against A’s righthanded starter Frankie Montas in the top of the first inning of Sunday’s 5-2 victory in the finale of the three-game series at RingCentral Coliseum.
The Red Sox outfielder, who was batting leadoff in the designated hitter’s spot for J.D. Martinez, laced a single through the left side of the infield to beat the shift. Kiké Hernández singled off Montas, too, and with Duran on second, Rafael Devers made it three straight hits off Montas with his RBI single to left.
It was Devers’s 30th RBI of the season, all made possible by the speed of Duran.
Devers’s single landed in left in front of Chad Pinder, who has a strong arm. With his momentum going forward, Pinder delivered a good throw to home plate, but it still wasn’t enough to nab Duran, who slid in safely and roared in elation when he sprang to his feet.
The aftermath of it all, the emotion, is what the Sox want to see. It was the message Sox manager Alex Cora delivered to Duran this year: “Be you,”
“It’s hard to come here and be yourself when you have J.D. Martinez and Xander Bogaerts here,” Cora said. “But, in the end, we like the player and the person. He brings energy. He brings joy on a daily basis and that’s something we asked him to do. And you can tell he’s a lot more comfortable in the clubhouse and on the field.”
It was Duran’s only hit of the game, but his swing path looks cleaner. He’s shorter to the ball, instead of trying to launch everything. He’s had quality at-bats, for the most part since being recalled Friday. He went 2 for 5 in Saturday’s 8-0 shutout of the A’s, stinging the ball to all parts of the the field.
“He was really good [Saturday]. He’s a threat,” Cora said.
“It helps me play my best when I just go out there and enjoy the game and have fun,” Duran said after the game. “When I get quiet is when I put too much pressure on myself. But hearing that [from Cora] helps me as a player to just go out there and have fun.”
Pitchers progress report
Chris Sale (right rib cage fracture) will throw a bullpen Tuesday and is expected to throw to hitters Friday.
Hansel Robles (back spasms) threw a live batting practice Saturday and is scheduled to throw an inning with the Worcester Red Sox Tuesday in Buffalo. The Sox are hopeful Robles can join the team Thursday when he’s scheduled to come off the injured list.
Josh Taylor (back) recently threw a bullpen. James Paxton (Tommy John) is throwing out 120 feet, but still isn’t throwing off a mound. However, Cora said it’s trending in that direction. No update on Bradley
The Red Sox do not have an update on Jackie Bradley Jr.’s return from the paternity list. Cora said Bradley, his wife, Erin, and their newborn daughter, Elle, were set to be released from the hospital Sunday . . . Martinez had a scheduled day off Sunday. At the end of this West Coast swing, the Sox will have played 10 consecutive games in 10 days . . . The Red Sox will travel to Anaheim for the second leg of their three-city road trip to take on the Angels in a four-game set. The Angels are in the midst of an 11-game losing streak after Sunday’s 9-7 loss to the host Philadelphia Phillies. Mike Trout is in an 0-for-26 slump, the longest of his career. Michael Wacha will take the mound for the Red Sox against Noah Syndergaard. Garrett Whitlock will draw the start Tuesday, followed by Nate Eovaldi Wednesday. Nick Pivetta will close out the four-game series Thursday. The Angels final three starters for the series have yet to be determined.

Red Sox notebook: Chris Sale to face live hitters Friday, to begin rehab assignment soon Sale should be out on rehab soon
By Jason Mastrodonato | jason.mastrodonato@bostonherald.com | Boston Herald PUBLISHED: June 5, 2022 at 8:03 p.m. | UPDATED: June 5, 2022 at 8:20 p.m.
The Red Sox are starting to get excited about Chris Sale’s return.
While he isn’t ready for a rehab assignment quite yet, Sale is scheduled to throw a bullpen session in Fort Myers, Fla., on Tuesday and then will likely face hitters in a live batting practice session on Friday. Once he throws live BP twice, he should be ready for a rehab assignment, manager Alex Cora told reporters in Oakland.
“He’s feeling really good,” Cora said. “Whenever I text him … If it was up to him, he’s starting tomorrow … We’re smarter than that, and he knows it too. So just keep building him up and whenever he’s ready, he’s ready, knowing he’s going to be part of this.
“Like I said last year, there’s only one team that can say they are going to add Chris Sale to the rotation and it’s us. Not to put too much pressure on him because he understands how it works, but he’s going to be a huge addition.”
The end of June is probably the earliest Sale could return, though the Sox haven’t yet said how many rehab starts he’ll need.
Reliever Hansel Robles is nearing a return as well, as Robles could be back from the 15-day injured list as soon as Thursday, Cora said. He’s been out with back spasms. Back in the playoff picture
It’s been a story of two seasons for the Red Sox, who were 10-19 and 10 games back of the first-place Yankees when they hit the road on May 10, but have since gone 17-8 over their last 25 games.
With exactly one third of the season complete and the Red Sox now 27-27, they slid into third place in the American League Wild Card race just ahead of the Angels, who lost their 11th straight on Sunday afternoon. The Angels (27-28) had a 5-2 lead over the Phillies going into the eighth, but allowed a grand slam to Bryce Harper and a walkoff homer to Bryson Stott.
The surging Sox now head to Anaheim for four games against the Angels beginning Monday night.
“We got ourselves in a bad spot but we believe in our group,” Cora said. “We’re a good baseball team that has to keep working hard to accomplish what we want. We’ve been playing good baseball the last three weeks. Just grinding and using everybody. There are a few guys who have carried the offense for a little bit. The pitching staff has done an amazing job… Yeah, we still have holes, but I think on a daily basis we feel really good about ourselves.” Showing off the wheels
Jarren Duran might be heading back to Triple-A Worcester soon, as Jackie Bradley Jr. is expected to return from paternity leave any day now, but Duran made his presence felt in the Sox’ 5-2 win over the A’s on Sunday.
On the first pitch of the game by A’s starter Frankie Montas, Duran hit a single up the middle to get things going. He moved to second on a single by Kiké Hernandez and then scored from second on a single to left field, jetting around the bases to give the Sox an early 1-0 lead.
“He wasn’t even at third when the guy had the baseball,” Cora said. “It was a good throw. Just a different gear. I was joking with (J.D. Martinez), not joking actually. We talk about tools. You want to hit for power. But speed is something you can not teach. The instincts, too. It was a great read.
“He’s so fast and puts pressure on the opposition. It didn’t go the way he wanted it to offensively (Duran went 1-for-4 with three strikeouts), but he got us going right away.” Leading the league in offense
The Sox’ plus-38 run differential this season ranks third in the A.L. behind the Yankees (plus-102) and the Astros (plus-48).
The Sox have a 3.48 ERA from their starting rotation while leading the majors in extra-base hits (192) and doubles (135). They lead the A.L. in runs (262).
While they ranked near the bottom of the league in homers for most of the season, the Sox have since hit 32 home runs in their last 20 games.

Boston Red Sox notebook: Alex Cora’s team moves into third Wild Card spot; Jarren Duran shows ‘different gear’ scoring Updated: Jun. 05, 2022, 10:44 p.m. | Published: Jun. 05, 2022, 10:35 p.m.
By Christopher Smith | csmith@masslive.com
OAKLAND, Calif. — The Boston Red Sox moved ahead of the Los Angeles Angels for the third AL Wild Card spot after sweeping a three-game series against the Athletics this weekend.
Boston won 5-2 over Oakland here Sunday at RingCentral Coliseum.
The Red Sox head to Anaheim for a four-game series against the struggling Angels beginning Monday. The Angels have lost 11 straight games to drop to a half game behind Boston.
All three Wild Card spots right now are occupied by AL East teams, the Rays, Blue Jays and Red Sox.
Boston (27-27) reached .500 for the first time since having a 7-7 record on April 22. It was as many as nine games under .500 on May 11.
“We got ourselves in a bad spot but we believe in the group,” Cora said. “We know we have a good baseball team that has to keep working hard to accomplish what we want. We’ve been playing good baseball the last three weeks. We’re just grinding and using everybody. There’s a few guys that have carried the offense for a little bit. The pitching staff has done an amazing job. Rich (Hill) was really good (Sunday). And yeah, we’ve still got holes but I think on a daily basis we feel very good about ourselves trying to win on a nightly basis.”
Duran scores in ‘different gear’
Jarren Duran singled to lead off Sunday’s game and scored the first run on Rafael Devers’ single to left field.
Cora pointed out that left fielder Chad Pinder fielded the ball before Duran even reached third base but the speedster still scored.
“He wasn’t even at third when the guy had the baseball,” Cora said. “And it was a good throw. Just a different gear. .. We talk about tools, right? You want to hit for power or whatever. Speed is something you cannot teach. And the instincts, too. It was a great read. And he’s so fast he puts pressure on the opposition.”
Devers ‘makes hitting look easy’
The Red Sox initially considered using Rafael Devers as the DH on Sunday as J.D. Martinez received an off day.
“But he refused to DH,” Cora said, smiling.
Devers wanted to play third base. His opposite field solo homer in the eighth inning put Boston ahead 5-1.
“He’s grinding right now,” Cora said. “It’s been a tough schedule for us. We were thinking about the off day for him but it’s so hard to do it because he makes hitting look easy. The quality of the at-bats, forget the home run. The walk to start off the sixth inning and the line drive the other way and playing good defense. But at one point we have to help him out a little bit, get him off his feet and just reset a little bit. But he’s been amazing for us. I look up. He’s hitting .340 with 12 bombs, playing good defense.”
Days off coming
J.D. Martinez received a day off Sunday.
“This week we’re going to take care of some guys,” Cora said. “I know we had the off day here (Thursday) but it was a traveling day. And it’s not easy”
Devers will sit at some point this week likely when the Red Sox face a left-handed starter in Anaheim.
Cora also wants Trevor Story and Kiké Hernández each to receive a day off during this West Coast road trip, which consists of 10 games in 10 days.
“We’re coming from a tough time,” Cora said. “Last week, I know everybody made a big deal about the series against the Orioles. But it was a grind physically. And we’ve got to take care of guys. We’re playing for the long run here. And we want these guys to be ready in August, September and October. And we have to take care of them.”

Mike Trout, Angels desperate for success in opener vs. Red Sox FLM
Looking to end an 11-game losing streak, the Los Angeles Angels will begin a four-game home series on Monday against the Boston Red Sox in Anaheim, Calif.
The Angels lost to the Philadelphia Phillies 9-7 on Sunday to extend the streak, and also welcomed back someone who similarly is looking to turn things around.
Outfielder Jo Adell, formerly the club's No. 1 prospect and the No. 3 prospect in all of Major League Baseball as recently as 2020, rejoined the club Sunday, replacing the injured Taylor Ward on the active roster. He started in right field and went 1-for-4.
The Angels felt comfortable enough with Adell coming out of spring training to release veteran outfielder Justin Upton, but Adell struggled and was demoted to Triple-A on May 3 after hitting .215 with three homers, eight RBIs and a .627 OPS in 19 games.
Adell, though, said he was told he needed to focus on defense as much as anything.
"I really put an emphasis on my defense, which is what my goal has been since the season started," Adell said. "I feel good. I went down and worked really hard."
Adell admitted the demotion stung a bit.
"I was a little disappointed, but at the end of the day, I knew I'm still young in this," Adell, 23, said. "So I just continued to work. I just tried to do things to help myself get back."
In 19 games at Triple-A, Adell hit .222 with six homers, 15 RBIs and a .938 OPS.
While the Angels are struggling as a team, they also are looking for center fielder Mike Trout to end his slump. He went 0 for 3 with a walk on Sunday and is now hitless in his last 26 at-bats, the longest hitless streak in his career.
Right-hander Noah Syndergaard (4-3, 4.02 ERA) will be on the mound for the Angels to make his ninth start of the season. He's coming off a loss his last time out on Tuesday against the New York Yankees, allowing five runs and seven hits in 2 1/3 innings.
Syndergaard is 1-1 with a 3.05 ERA in three career starts vs. the Red Sox.
Right-hander Michael Wacha (3-1, 2.43) will make his ninth start of the season for Boston. He's coming off a loss his last time out against Cincinnati, even though he allowed just one run (unearned) and three hits in 5 2/3 innings.
Wacha and Syndergaard were matched up against each other on May 3 at Fenway Park, and both pitchers threw well. Wacha tossed 5 2/3 scoreless innings and got the victory over Syndergaard, who gave up three runs in seven innings.
Wacha is in his first season with Boston after seven years with the Cardinals, one with the Rays and one with the Mets.
"He's only (30 years old)," Red Sox manager Alex Cora said. "He prepares, he understands information and he wants to keep getting better."
Wacha is 2-0 with a 0.77 ERA in two career starts against the Angels.

The Red Sox are suddenly back in the postseason conversation
By Rob Bradford WEEI 93.7 3 hours ago
OAKLAND - The Red Sox probably felt a little different when they woke up in their Southern California beds Monday morning. They were living the life of a contender.
Thanks to the Sox' three-game sweep of the A's - punctuated by a 5-2 win in Oakland Sunday - Alex Cora's team sits entrenched as a Wild Card team, joining the Blue Jays and Tampa Bay.
Oh, and they also find themselves at .500 for the first time since April 22. Considering the Red Sox left Texas eight games under the mark back on May 15, staring at a three-game series with Houston, it's an accomplishment that should bring a spring to the Sox' step.
So, what has happened since that low point? A lot.
For starters, the Red Sox are 14-6 during the turnaround, the best mark in the major leagues. (And that's while going just 2-for-5 in save opportunities in those 20 games.)
@soxnotes At 27-27, the Red Sox:
-Hold the AL’s 3rd Wild Card spot -Have won their last 4 games -Are 17-8 (.680) in their last 25 games -Are 5-1-2 in their last 8 series -Lead the AL in runs scored (262) -Own the AL’s 3rd-largest run differential (+38) 8:11 PM · Jun 5, 2022
Really the straw that has stirred this drink, however, has been a resurgent offense. What was one of the big league's worse, is now one of the best.
Since coming home from that mid-May road trip, the Red Sox carry the best batting average (.298) and OPS (.889) in the big leagues, collecting the most hits (214), total bases (378), and extra-base hits (97). Only the Dodgers have hit more home runs than the Sox' 32.
They have three hitters who have OPS north of 1.000 over the 20 games - Rafael Devers (1.119), Trevor Story (1.092) and J.D. Martinez (1.046) - with Xander Bogaerts sitting just behind at .936.
The ninth-best OPS on the Red Sox during this span - Alex Verdugo's .757 - would have in the Top 4 prior to the resurgence.
Also not to be ignored has been the impact of Franchy Cordero, who got things going for the Red Sox Sunday with his third homer of the season. The Sox are now 18-13 when Cordero plays, with the first baseman/outfielder totaling a .792 OPS in the 20-game stretch.
As for the pitching ... They are figuring it out.
The starters have never been the problem, and continue to be part of the solution.
J.P. Long @soxnotes Red Sox starters posted a 0.29 ERA this last turn through the rotation.
30.2 IP, 1 ER 23 SO, 3 BB 0.65 WHIP .159 AVG (17-for-107)
Wacha – 5.2 IP, 0 ER, 3 H Whitlock – 6.0 IP, 0 ER, 5 H Eovaldi – 6.0 IP, 0 ER, 4 H Pivetta – 7.0 IP, 0 ER, 2 H Hill – 6.0 IP, 1 ER, 3 H 7:30 PM · Jun 5, 2022
The last piece of the puzzle will be figuring out the final few outs.
The revelation over the run has been John Schreiber, who has vaulted to the top of the list when it comes to Cora's most trusted relievers. The righty hasn't allowed a run or a walk over the six games he has appeared in during the run, stranding all three runners he has inherited.
And while Matt Strahm has hit some recent bumps in the road, his effectiveness in the last 20 games shouldn't be ignored, holding opponents to a 1.58 ERA while striking out 11 and walking just two over 11 innings.
The wild card might be Tanner Houck, who has been dabbling in some late-inning appearances, having not given up a run since leaving that series in Texas.
"The mentality he’s not afraid," Cora said of Houck. "He came out of the bullpen last year and was huge for us. He’s one of those guys, we see him as a weapon back there and we’ll use him the right way."
There is still some figuring out to do, no question about it. But it's hard to ignore that the Red Sox suddenly find themselves in a palatable position, now taking on a team that has lost 11 in a row (the Angels) before traveling to Seattle for a meeting with the 24-30 Mariners.
And to add to the optimism, the current road trip is followed by a nine-game homestead that includes games against the lowly A's and Tigers.
Summer baseball around these parts might be interesting, after all.

Just an FYI the writer who was with Over the Monster and has down the preview of each series left that site so until they get a replacement, not much of any preview. WEEI does not do it anymore, MASSLIVE quit doing it as well. I like reading them, heck, I still like reading boxscores as well.
There are other ones out there but they IMO, are not too good. So until Over The Monster gets some one else, be patient.
I for one would be happy with sweeping the Halos, but will remain realistic and realize that the Ohtahni game will be tough.

And yeah, we’ve still got holes but I think on a daily basis we feel very good about ourselves trying to win on a nightly basis.” Duran scores in ‘different gear’ Jarren Duran singled to lead off Sunday’s game and scored the first run on Rafael Devers’ single to left field. And he’s so fast he puts pressure on the opposition.” Devers ‘makes hitting look easy’ The Red Sox initially considered using Rafael Devers as the DH on Sunday as J.D. I look up. He’s hitting .340 with 12 bombs, playing good defense.” Days off coming J.D. Martinez received a day off Sunday. “This week we’re going to take care of some guys,” Cora said. “I know we had the off day here (Thursday) but it was a traveling day. And it’s not easy” Devers will sit at some point this week likely when the Red Sox face a left-handed starter in Anaheim. And we have to take care of them.” Again, not a fan of Duran, but it would be a heck of thing if he proved himself capable of starting. You could platoon him with Kiki, if we re-sign him, and make Kiki the super-sub.

Michael Wacha tosses 3-hit complete game shutout, leads Boston Red Sox to win over Angels Updated: Jun. 07, 2022, 3:23 a.m. | Published: Jun. 07, 2022, 12:12 a.m.

ANAHEIM, Calif. — Michael Wacha saved his fastest pitch of the 2022 season for Shohei Ohtani.
With a runner at second base and two outs in the sixth, Wacha reached back for 96.6 mph up and out of the zone to strike out Ohtani on a foul tip. He also reached 96.4 mph on the pitch before.
He then retired Ohtani for the final out of the game on a groundout to second base.
Wacha was brilliant. He pitched a complete game shutout to lead the Red Sox 1-0 over the Angels here at Angel Stadium on Monday. He allowed just three hits and one walk while striking out six.
“Obviously Ohtani is one of the greats in this game right now,” Wacha said. “I had a guy in scoring position and just gotta try to strand that runner out there as best as I can and went for the punch-out and was able to get a swing-and-miss. He didn’t miss (many) other pitches tonight. Hit the ball pretty hard but that was a big strikeout there in the sixth.”
The Red Sox lead the league with three complete games. Nick Pivetta and Nathan Eovaldi recorded the other two. No other team has more than one complete game.
Boston improved to 28-27. The Angels lost their 12th straight game to drop to 27-29.
Wacha entered his start averaging 93 mph with his four-seam fastball and 93 mph with his two-seamer this season, per Baseball Savant.
He improved to 4-1 with a 1.99 ERA in nine starts this season.
The Red Sox went ahead 1-0 in the second inning when Christian Vázquez singled into left-center field off Noah Syndergaard. Alex Verdugo was running on the pitch and scored from first base.
Tuesday’s game
Garrett Whitlock (2-1, 3.02 ERA) will start for the Red Sox on Tuesday. The Angels have not yet announced their starting pitcher. First pitch is at 9:38 p.m., eastern.
