Red Sox Stats @redsoxstats · 1h Whitlock's back on the mound tonight, some stuff: What does his velo look like tonight after being way down in hit last start? Does he start to generate more swings and misses again? Seems like a pretty dramatic lowering of his arm slot in his last couple of games.

Angels Fire Joe Maddon
By Anthony Franco | June 7, 2022 at 3:10pm CDT
The Angels announced they’ve fired manager Joe Maddon. Buster Olney of ESPN reported shortly before the team announcement that such a move was under consideration. Phil Nevin will take over on an interim basis.
The decision comes as the Halos are mired in a disastrous stretch of play. Los Angeles is currently amidst a 12-game losing streak, one that has seen the club fall two games under .500. The Angels had started the season as one of the hottest teams in the major leagues, but their dreadful past couple of weeks has dropped them eight and a half games behind the Astros in the American League West. They enter play Tuesday tied with the White Sox for the AL’s eighth-best record overall.
More to come.

nothing will change there with that owner, as he tries to compete with the Dodgers I don't get a lot of what LAA does. Three years ago, they promoted Adell from AAA to the pros. Adell had a 43/10 K/W, with -0- HRs in what was the old PCL. It's almost impossible to hit that badly in the PCL. And he couldn't field. They should've demoted him, but they promoted what might've been the worst player in the PCL. Naturally, he was terrible with the Angels. That probably set him back at least a year, maybe ruined him. They have Marsh with a 50/6 K/W in his last 132 ABs. Maddon allowed Iglesias to go 9 days without an appearance. 3 of them were one-run games, so there would've been merit to using him, even if not in a save situation.

Christian Vázquez’s RBI single in 10th leads Boston Red Sox to win over Angels on Tuesday Published: Jun. 08, 2022, 1:38 a.m.
By Christopher Smith | csmith@masslive.com
ANAHEIM, Calif. — Christian Vázquez singled to the opposite field with one out in the 10th inning to score the automatic runner and put Boston ahead.
Matt Strahm then locked down the save in bottom of the 10th. Boston won 6-5 over the Angels here at Angel Stadium on Tuesday.
Strahm struck out Jared Walsh swinging and Max Stassi looking.
Kurt Suzuki then grounded out to Kiké Hernández who made a strong play to end the game. Hernández was playing shortstop because Xander Bogaerts left the game with left shoulder tightness.
The Angels, who fired Joe Maddon earlier in the day, lost their 13th straight game. The Red Sox, meanwhile, are 5-0 on this West Coast road trip.
Houck escapes ninth-inning jam
Tyler Wade led off the bottom of the ninth against Tanner Houck with a 71.5 mph double down the third base line that beat the shift.
But Houck escaped. He retired Matt Duffy on a pop-out to second base and struck out Luis Rengifo swinging.
After an intentional walk to Shohei Ohtani, Houck struck out Jo Adell looking to escape.
Bogaerts exits game
Xander Bogaerts exited the game with left shoulder tightness in the ninth inning. Franchy Cordero pinch hit for him.
Whitlock struggles
Garrett Whitlock pitched 4 innings, allowing four runs (all earned), six hits and no walks while striking out five.
Whitlock has a 4.15 ERA (39 innings, 18 earned runs) in nine starts compared to a 0.93 ERA (9 ⅔ innings, one earned run) in four relief appearances this season.
Five of the six hits he allowed came against his sinker, which averaged 94.9 mph and topped out at 96.2 mph, per Baseball Savant.
Whitlock recorded 12 swings-and-misses, seven with his sinker, three with his slider and two with his changeup.
Back-and-forth game
Mike Trout blasted a 399-foot two-run home run against Whitlock to put the Angels ahead 2-0 in the first inning. Trout connected on a 95 mph sinker.
The Red Sox went ahead 3-2 in the top of the second inning. Christian Arroyo knocked in a run when he grounded into a force-out. Bobby Dalbec and Kiké Hernández each added RBI singles.
The Angels tied it in the bottom of the second and eventually went ahead 5-3.
Dalbec’s RBI single in the sixth inning cut it to 5-4. Trevor Story’s infield RBI single that deflected off pitcher Ryan Tepera tied in the seventh.

Xander Bogaerts leaves Boston Red Sox’s win because of left shoulder tightness Published: Jun. 08, 2022, 3:14 a.m.
By Christopher Smith | csmith@masslive.com
ANAHEIM, Calif. — Shortstop Xander Bogaerts exited the Red Sox’s 6-5 extra-inning win over the Angels on Tuesday because of left shoulder tightness.
Franchy Cordero pinch hit for him in the ninth inning.
Red Sox manager Alex Cora said Bogaerts’ shoulder has bothered him at times since his collision with Alex Verdugo at Fenway Park on May 20. Bogaerts was backpedaling to catch a ball and Verdugo ran into him.
“It’s been kind of on-and-off bothering him,” Cora said. “We’ll see tomorrow. He’s begging to play. We’ll see how it goes.”
Bogaerts went 1-for-4 with two strikeouts.
Cordero remained in the game in right field. Jackie Bradley Jr. moved from right field to center field. Kiké Hernández moved from center field to shortstop.

Boston Red Sox’s Alex Cora screamed Kiké Hernandez’s name in dugout on final play; ‘That wasn’t an easy play’ Updated: Jun. 08, 2022, 3:49 a.m. | Published: Jun. 08, 2022, 3:47 a.m.
By Christopher Smith | csmith@masslive.com
ANAHEIM, Calif. — Kiké Hernández has played just five innings at shortstop this season. But he made a big play ranging to his left to field Kurt Suzuki’s 85.1 mph grounder up the middle with a runner at second and two outs in the 10th inning Tuesday.
Hernández made a strong, accurate throw to first baseman Bobby Dalbec who squeezed it for the game’s final out. The Red Sox won 6-5 over the Angels here at Angel Stadium.
“Actually, in the dugout when he hit it, I screamed ‘Kiké' and he made the play,” manager Alex Cora said. “It’s who he is. You move him around and he makes plays. That wasn’t an easy play and he gets to it, he makes a great throw.”
Hernández has served as a super utility player for most of his career, starting at every position except for catcher.
But he mainly has stuck to center field this season. He has played 449 ⅔ innings in center field and 5 innings at shortstop.
Two of those five innings at shortstop came Tuesday when he replaced Xander Bogaerts there.
Bogaerts left the game because of left shoulder tightness in the top of the ninth. And so Hernández moved from center field to shortstop for the ninth and 10th innings. Jackie Bradley Jr. moved from right field to center field. Franchy Cordero, who pinch hit for Bogaerts, remained in the game in right field.
“He didn’t do much at shortstop during spring training,” Cora said. “He hasn’t done much in the infield throughout the season. But whenever we need him, we know we can count on him. And that was an outstanding play.”

'Let's go!' -- Houck paves way for Sox's 6th straight 50 minutes ago Ian Browne
Ian Browne @ianmbrowne
ANAHEIM -- After the last of Tanner Houck’s lethal sliders froze Jo Adell for the biggest out of Tuesday night’s 6-5 victory in 10 innings over the Angels, the righty pumped his fist and shouted, “Let’s go!” on his way back from the dugout.
With some recently grown facial hair forming perhaps the beginning of a handlebar mustache, Houck is even starting to look the part of high-leverage reliever.
“I had a lot of fun in that situation. It gets the blood boiling a little bit. Heart rate up. Living in the moment,” said Houck.
Backed by Houck’s big moment, the surging Red Sox ripped off their sixth win in a row and 15th in the last 20 and in the process handed the Angels a 13th straight loss.
A Boston bullpen that has had issues for much of the season is starting to get some things figured out as roles get more settled.
And one thing that’s becoming apparent is that Houck and his wipeout slider and 95 mph heat will be ever-present in the most crucial situations.
“That’s what we’re looking for,” said Red Sox manager Alex Cora. “We’re going to use him in high-leverage situations and will try to avoid the three-inning, four-inning stints. Maximum, he’ll go two.”
Houck did that maximum duty on Tuesday -- the eighth and ninth. He punched out three and left the potential walk-off run on second base after Tyler Wade’s leadoff double in the ninth.
The late innings are always best for pitchers who feed off adrenaline. And Houck clearly fits in that category.
“You’ve got to ask him. But he loves it,” said Cora.
That was confirmed by a visit to Houck’s locker after the game.
“I’m excited for it. Any time I can get the ball and go out there and pitch, I’m always going to be excited for that,” said Houck. “I love being out there. I love being able to compete.”
Houck threw 30 pitches and got five whiffs, all of them on sliders.
“Yeah, everybody knows how his slider is,” said catcher Christian Vázquez. “It’s a sweep slider. Tough to hit. And then you see 95 on the fastball, [it looks] harder. It was fun.”
The season started with Houck in the rotation. And then he flip-flopped roles with his best friend, Garrett Whitlock, and was mainly used as a piggy-back option for a few weeks.
Those days are over, as Houck will now be called on with the game hanging in the balance.
“Kind of like the way we used Garrett last year,” said Cora. “He’s been throwing the ball great for us, and obviously with traffic he did an outstanding job, maneuvering the lineup, and his stuff is really good late in games and that was really good for us.”
Houck’s standout performance was the highlight of an all-around satisfying night for the Red Sox.
Here are a couple of other things that stood out.
Mr. Clutch stays hot On a Boston team that includes heavy hitters like Xander Bogaerts, Rafael Devers, J.D. Martinez and Trevor Story, Vázquez can be an afterthought.
But with the game on the line, Vázquez has come through on many occasions over the last several seasons. The latest example was the top of the 10th inning on Tuesday when he rifled a single through the hole at second base and into right for an RBI single that scored automatic runner Story for the decisive run.
“I love those situations,” said Vázquez. “Somebody needs to do it, so why not me? I think the blood is going fast. I like that. It’s fun.”
In his last 12 games, Vázquez has a line of .362/.400/.553 with 12 RBIs.
Don’t sell Kiké short For the first time in his career, Kiké Hernández has finally settled into one position in center field rather than moving all over the place.
But when Bogaerts had to exit the game in the ninth inning with left shoulder tightness, Hernández moved to shortstop.
With two outs in the 10th, Kurt Suzuki hit one behind the bag at second that would have tied the game if it had gone through. But Hernández ranged over to make the stop and fired to first to end the game.
“Unreal,” said Cora. “Actually in the dugout when he hit, I screamed ‘Kiké!’, and he made the play. It’s who he is. You move him around and he makes plays. That wasn’t an easy play, and he gets to it, he makes a great throw. And he didn’t do much at shortstop in Spring Training, he hasn’t done much in the infield throughout the season, but whenever we need him, we know we can count on him and that was an outstanding play.”

Julian McWilliams @byjulianmack · 2h Bogaerts is OK, Cora said, and is pushing Cora to let him play tomorrow. The shoulder tightness came from when Bogaerts collided with Verdugo at Fenway against Seattle on May 20.
Also, Cora said they are going to use Houck in high leverage situations. No more than 2 innings.

RED SOX NOTEBOOK Third base coach Carlos Febles sent Alex Verdugo home on Monday night, and it led to a Red Sox win By Julian McWilliams Globe Staff,Updated June 8, 2022, 52 minutes ago
ANAHEIM, Calif. — A lot of the talk Monday evening had to do with Michael Wacha’s complete game in the Red Sox’ 1-0 win over the Angels. As it should have been.
But what also won the Sox the game was third base coach Carlos Febles’s shrewd decision to send Alex Verdugo home in the second inning.
With two outs against Noah Syndergaard, Christian Vázquez got the count to 3 and 2. Verdugo was moving on the pitch when Vázquez laced a single into the left-center field gap. Center fielder Mike Trout was forced to move in that direction, and Febles knew it would be a tough throw for Trout to make with his back into the infield.
“Verdugo never slowed down,” Febles said Tuesday before the Sox’ 6-5 extra-inning win against the Angels. “Trout was deep and had to go to left-center, so I knew he was going to have a tough time. [The middle infielders] weren’t lined up to second, and it kind of made it an easier decision.”
Once Febles saw that Andrew Velazquez wasn’t lined up toward the second base bag, Febles said he didn’t even have to wait for the throw. He knew that even for Velazquez, an elite shortstop, it would be a tough relay throw to home. Febles, who is known for his gutsy calls while keeping a balanced approach, said this one was a no-brainer.
“I mean, everything was in front of me,” Febles said. “The tougher ones are down the right field line, where you’ve got to turn your head and look at the runner. [In this instance] the runner was in front of me, the play was in front of me, so you could see where [Trout] was, where Verdugo was, and where everyone was lined up.”
Verdugo slid into home safely for what turned out to be the game’s only run.
Cora on Maddon firing
The Angels relieved Joe Maddon of his duties Tuesday afternoon in the midst of the team’s 12-game losing streak. Third base coach Phil Nevin was named interim manager.
Maddon was in his third season with the Angels. He previously had managed the Cubs (winning the World Series in 2016) and the Rays.
“It [stinks],” said Red Sox manager Alex Cora. “Here’s a guy that has been really solid throughout his career, what he did with Tampa was great, and with the Cubs, too. It’s the nature of the business. Obviously, they feel like they have to move in a different direction. That is a good team that needs to get better, and for everything I hear they just need a different voice, but they’re very talented.”
Cora alluded to some of his own team’s early struggles, and that he believes the Angels are feeling how the Red Sox did when they got off to a slow start. Nevertheless, Cora believes Maddon will regroup.
“Joe will be fine,” Cora said. “It’s a tough one because that’s what’s going to happen to all of us. Either they don’t renew your contract or they kick you to the curb.” Not feeling it
Chris Sale did not throw his scheduled bullpen session because of a stomach bug. The Red Sox hope it’s just a 24-hour thing and that Sale can get back on the mound soon. The initial plan had Sale following up Tuesday’s bullpen by pitching to hitters Friday . . . Hansel Robles was scheduled to pitch an inning with Worcester on Tuesday in Buffalo, but that game was canceled. The plan is for Robles to pitch in Wednesday’s doubleheader and rejoin the Sox Thursday . . . The Angels’ Mike Trout was removed from with left groin tightness. Trout was 2 for 2 with a two-run homer and a double off starter Garrett Whitlock. After doubling in the gap bottom of the third inning, Trout slowed after rounding first base . . . Xander Bogaerts was removed from Tuesday’s game with left shoulder tightness. Franchy Cordero pinch hit for Bogaerts in the top of the ninth inning. Cora said Bogaerts is OK and is pushing to play Wednesday. Bogaerts originally hurt his shoulder on May 20 against the Mariners when he collided with Verdugo going out for a fly ball.
