Red Sox @ Mariners Friday, 10th June 2022 10pm @ Safeco Field
Hill 2-3/4.40
Gonzales 1-1/3.59
Boston Red Sox vs. Seattle Mariners Friday, June 10, 2022 at 10:10pm EDT Written by Mark Ruelle
The Boston Red Sox travel to Seattle to take on the Mariners as they continue their west coast swing on Friday night. The Red Sox have come back from a slow start and now find themselves in the thick of the playoff picture. The Mariners are coming into the series fresh off of taking two out of three games vs. AL West leader Houston. Friday night's pitching matchup will feature veteran lefty Rich Hill (2-3, 4.40) of the Red Sox vs. fellow lefty Marco Gonzalez (3-6, 3.59) of the Mariners. Game time is scheduled for 1010pm EST.
Red-hot Sox It has been a highly successful west coast trip for the Boston Red Sox thus far but the way in which they have won has been a surprise. When the Sox first caught fire over two weeks ago, the team was led by its offense. The Red Sox have jumped to the head of the line with the best team batting average in baseball and are moving up the ranks in runs scored per game. On this trip, however, it has been the Red Sox pitching that has been the story. The Sox pitching staff has thrown three shutouts in the past week and that includes another complete game. There are seven teams in MLB with a complete game this season with only Boston having more than one, as Michael Wacha's complete game shutout was the team's third complete game of the season. On Thursday night, starter Nick Pivetta and the Red Sox were done in by Shohei Ohtani at the plate and on the mound. Pivetta struck out 11 batters in five innings but gave up a 2-run home run to Ohtani in the fifth inning to erase a 1-0 Boston lead. He then departed after the first two men reached in the sixth before Sox reliever Hirokazu Sawamura came in and gave up a 3-run home run to Andrew Velazquez that sealed the Sox fate and ended their 7-game winning streak. Ohtani struck out six Sox batters while allowing just a run in 7 innings.
The Red Sox are now officially back in the playoff picture after spending a portion of this season in the basement of the AL East Division. With Chris Sale and James Paxton still not cleared to return to the starting rotation, the Red Sox have found success with the likes of Wacha, former reliever Garrett Whitlock and tonight's starter, Rich Hill. In their last ten games, the Sox have an ERA of 2.08 and have averaged over 8 strikeouts per game. Hill is coming off his best performance of the season after going six innings and allowing 3 hits and 1 run in Oakland on Sunday. The Red Sox have handled the 41-year old veteran with kid gloves this season as Hill has only gone six innings two times on the season.
Mariners Back on Track? The Seattle Mariners were a chic pick to make the playoffs this season after showing improvement in each of the last few seasons, highlighted by 90 wins last season. The Marines further encouraged enthusiasm by signing 2021 AL Cy Young Award winner Robby Ray and completing a huge trade with Cincinnati that led to power hitting third baseman Eugenio Suarez and OF Jesse Winker. All three have not yet lived up to their billing but the Mariners may have finally turned a corner after taking two out of three from the Astros in Houston this week. The Astros can really make a run within the division as they kick off an 11-game home stand with the Red Sox.
“You have to eventually (win in Houston) or we’re never going to win the West,” Mariners' Manager Servais said following the series in Houston. “That’s just where it’s at.”
The Mariners have now gone 6-4 in their last ten games and will hope to start to take off now that they're back home for their longest stretch of the season, 11 games. The pitching staff has stepped to the forefront in the last ten games. The team ERA is 3.74 and the staff has allowed 75 hits in 89 innings. They are allowing just 7.58 hits per 9 innings during this stretch. On the mound on Friday night will be Marco Gonzalez. The lefty has allowed 59 hits in 57.2 innings this season. Gonzalez is coming off his best back-to-back performances of the season. In his last two games, he has pitched 14.1 innings and allowed 10 hits and 5 runs. Interestingly, Gonzalez has taken a loss in each of those starts as the Mariners' offense generated 3 total runs in his two starts. He is 2-2 at home this season with one no-decision.

Boston Red Sox’s Garrett Whitlock has tight hip but it’s ‘not bothering him to pitch’; Nathan Eovaldi set to make next start Updated: Jun. 09, 2022, 8:23 p.m. | Published: Jun. 09, 2022, 8:20 p.m.
By Christopher Smith | csmith@masslive.com
ANAHEIM, Calif. — Red Sox starter Garrett Whitlock is dealing with some hip tightness but it’s nothing serious.
Manager Alex Cora said he noticed Whitlock favoring one leg during his start against the Reds on June 1 at Fenway Park.
“He had to cover first and and then there was a pop fly foul. He went after it and I noticed that,” Cora said here at Angel Stadium on Thursday. “We talk a little bit about it but nothing serious. The way he says it goes, it’s not bothering him to pitch. But obviously we have to take care of him. Maybe we can make adjustments as far as like his conditioning and all that. Instead of running outside, let’s do it on the treadmill.”
Cora said Whitlock will be ready for his next start.
“Tightness. I don’t want to say it’s similar to Nate (Eovaldi),” Cora added. “But I think with him, it’s more about moving around that it’s actually bothering him.”
Eovaldi set to make next start
Nathan Eovaldi will make his next start after departing following 5 innings Wednesday because of hip tightness.
The Red Sox believe the tightness he felt is the reason for the decrease in velocity yesterday. Eovaldi threw 32 four-seam fastballs against the Angels, averaging 94 mph, per Baseball Savant.
Eovaldi’s fastball averaged 96.7 mph in his first 11 starts.
“He’s doing OK,” Cora said. “Obviously it wasn’t perfect yesterday. Plaw (Kevin Plawecki) noticed it right away with the velo. So he had to actually quote-unquote pitch. It wasn’t the usual 98, 99. So he used his secondary pitches and we expect him to make his next start.”
He first felt it Wednesday morning. The right hip tightened up more as the game progressed Wednesday.

Rob Refsnyder to join Boston Red Sox; outfielder is on his way, per sources Updated: Jun. 09, 2022, 9:06 p.m. | Published: Jun. 09, 2022, 8:37 p.m.

ANAHEIM, Calif. — Rob Refsnyder is expected to join the Boston Red Sox, according to sources. He is on a flight out here.
He will need to be added to the 40-man roster. It’s unclear if he’ll be activated prior to Thursday’s game or if he’ll be added to the roster before Boston’s series in Seattle starting Friday.
The 31-year-old Refsnyder played in three games earlier this season for the Red Sox, going 2-for-5 with two doubles, one RBI and one walk.
The right-handed hitter has played well for Triple-A Worcester this season. He’s batting .306 with a .429 on-base percentage, .524 slugging percentage, .952 OPS, six homers, 14 doubles, 31 runs and 28 RBIs in 42 games (182 plate appearances).
The Red Sox signed Refsnyder to a minor league deal in the offseason. He has a .226/.312/.312/.624 career line in 235 major league games (620 plate appearances).

Injuries & Moves: Eovaldi on track for next start June 9th, 2022
Keep track of the Red Sox’s recent transactions and injury updates throughout the season. LATEST NEWS
June 9: RHP Nathan Eovaldi (right hip tightness) 'expected' to make next start Due to discomfort in his right hip, Eovaldi, Boston's ace, averaged 94 mph in his Wednesday start against the Angels, nearly three mph slower than his season average. However, Eovaldi was still able to throw five scoreless innings and earn the win. Red Sox manager Alex Cora said Thursday that the club expects Eovaldi to take his next turn in the rotation, which is scheduled for Tuesday at home against the Athletics. Eovaldi is 4-2 with a 3.16 ERA in 12 starts this season. -- Ian Browne
June 9: RHP Hansel Robles activated from 15-day injured list Robles, one of Cora's most trusted relievers this season, was activated the first day he was eligible after being shut down for two weeks due to back spasms. The righty has a 2.65 ERA with a 1.06 WHIP and .197 opponents batting average. -- Ian Browne
June 9: RHP Phillips Valdez optioned to Triple-A Worcester The Red Sox had to clear a roster spot for Robles, and that's why Valdez was sent back to Triple-A. The 30-year-old pitched twice after his recall from Worcester on May 28, allowing one run in two innings. Valdez has a 5.84 ERA (8 ER/12 1/3 IP) in 10 appearances for Boston this season, as well as a 1.17 ERA (1 ER/7 2/3 IP) in six outings for Worcester. -- Ian Browne

Houck has changed complexion of Boston 'pen June 9th, 2022 Ian Browne

It was only a week ago when everyone was still fretting about the Red Sox’s bullpen, and for good reason.
However, something crucial has happened since then, and it could lead to a big improvement in the late innings.
After tinkering with Tanner Houck's role multiple times (starter, piggyback reliever) this season, manager Alex Cora has come to the following conclusion: Houck will pitch in the late innings when the game is hanging in the balance.
Will he be a traditional closer? Not at this point. However, Houck’s outings will be limited to one to two innings, giving Cora the ability to use him more often.
Given Houck’s wipeout slider, which makes his 95 mph fastball look faster, the 25-year-old righty has the chance to be a lights-out weapon late in games.
You saw this come to light in Anaheim on Tuesday night. With the Red Sox and Angels locked in a 5-5 tie, Cora went to Houck for the eighth and ninth innings.
This was the type of road game the Red Sox had lost so many times earlier this season. But with Houck entrusted with those six outs in high-leverage, he was dominant, recording three strikeouts and stranding the potential walk-off run on second with nobody out in the ninth.
The Red Sox scored one in the 10th and Cora resisted the temptation to bring back Houck for a third inning out of respect for his new role. Matt Strahm took care of the 10th, and the Sox had their first road win in extras this season in five tries. It was the 15th win in 20 games for the Sox, who are turning their sluggish start to the season (11-20) into a distant memory. The offense has done the job since May. The starting rotation has been solid all season. The one missing ingredient was bullpen stability.
One dominant reliever used in the right way can change the complexion of an entire bullpen, because other roles become more defined.
And Houck is clearly taking to his new responsibility of getting the most important outs of the game.
“I had a lot of fun in that situation. It gets the blood boiling a little bit. Heart rate up. Living in the moment,” said Houck. “I’m excited for it. Any time I can get the ball and go out there and pitch, I’m always going to be excited for that. I love being out there. I love being able to compete.

RED SOX NOTEBOOK Trying to keep things loose, Kevin Plawecki takes measure of Red Sox’ personalities By Julian McWilliams Globe Staff,Updated June 9, 2022, 9:35 p.m.
ANAHEIM, Calif. — During the Red Sox’ trip to Texas in May, Kevin Plawecki walked up to a reporter with a special request.
“Hey,” he said. “When Rich [Hill] is done talking to [NESN’S Jahmai Webster], go up to Rich and ask him where is his personality at today.”
“His personality?” the reporter asked, confused.
“Yeah, just ask him,” Plawecki said while laughing.
The request was met with even more uncertainty. Was this a setup?
Nevertheless, the reporter went along with it. “Hey, Rich,” the reporter asked, “just want to know where your personality is today?” Hill smiled, shook his head, and looked at Plawecki a few lockers down, knowing the request came from the catcher.
Just like riding in the laundry cart after homering, Plawecki has made the question surrounding his teammates personality a trend in the clubhouse since last season. Yet this year, it’s more publicly evident to people outside the clubhouse. Each day, Plawecki enters the clubhouse and asks a teammate, “Hey where you at today?” The personality scale can rate from 1-10, with 1 being the lowest and 10 being the highest. If the teammate responds and says he’s at a 4.5 prior to game time, Plawecki will respond, “Ooh, we gotta get that thing up.” If they say “I’m at a 9.5,” Plawecki will say “Oh, man, don’t peak too early.” If they are at a 7.5 Plawecki will say “Nice trending upwards.”
So it begs the question, where did all of this begin? Plawecki, not in the lineup for Thursday’s series finale against the Angels, had time to discuss its history.
“It began with our assistant hitting coach, Pat Roessler, when I was with the Mets,” said Plawecki, seated in the visitors’ dugout at Angel Stadium. “He’s the king of one-liners. He’s a funny guy, keeping things light all the time.”
Roessler been with the Nationals hitting coach since 2020. So when Kyle Schwarber came over from the Nationals last year at the trade deadline, Plawecki and Schwarber paired up and made it a schtick in the Red Sox clubhouse.
“I would always ask Kyle, ‘How’s his personality today?’ Now it’s just taken off,” Plawecki said. “I ask everybody how their personality is, including you [the reporter]. So here we are. It’s just I want to get a pulse on everybody. You know, a long season, long road trips sometimes. Gotta get a pulse of the guys, make sure personalities are hot.”
At that point, Plawecki turned to Matt Strahm in the dugout, asking him, “Hey Strahm, how’s your personality right now?”
“I’m about a 7.5?” Strahm said.
“7.5?!” Plawecki said. “I was going to give you a 9.2. I was a little off, it looked like you were bouncing around a bit.”
Strahm then changed his number and said his personality was at a 7.2.
“See, he doesn’t know. As you can see, personalities are constantly fluctuating,” Plawecki said, laughing again.
When they first brought up personalities, I was like ‘What’s my personality? What do you mean?” Strahm said. “Then they started talking on a scale and that it’s like, okay, and caught on, and kind of just went with it.
Trevor Story, Plawecki said, is a consistent 7. He can’t get him to trend any higher or dip any lower.
“That’s probably why he’s so damn good,” Plawecki said.
As for Hill, he’s constantly between a 4-8 on the personality scale. But he could reach a 10, Plawecki said, like the time Hill dove to tag out Orioles’ Trey Mancini at home plate on a wild pitch late last month.
“I was giving flashing him 10s from the dugout,”
The Red Sox personalities have been on 10, as of recent. They are winners of their last seven and are 6-0 on this road trip.
As for the personality trend?
“It’s so stupid,” Plawecki said with a smile. “But it gets the guys going. Kind of checking the boiler in the room.” Hansel Robles in, Phillips Valdez out
Hansel Robles was activated off the injured list. Phillips Valdez was optioned to Triple A Worcester …Chris Sale (right rib cage fracture) is still scheduled to throw a bullpen Friday and possibly throw to hitters next week … James Paxton will throw off a mound during the Seattle series … Xander Bogaerts and Story were both off for the series finale. The plan is for both to play all three against the Mariners. Hernández sees specialist
Kiké Hernández (right hip flexor strain) went to see a hip specialist in New York Thursday after being placed on the injured list Wednesday . . . Nate Eovaldi and Garrett Whitlock are dealing with hip tightness but Alex Cora said he doesn’t believe it would require either missing a start . . . The Sox are calling up outfielder Rob Refsnyder from Worcester for their series with the Mariners. Refsnyder entered the day hitting .306/.429/.524 with six homers in 182 plate appearances for the WooSox . . . The Sox will have Rich Hill, Michael Wacha, and Garrett Whitlock on the hill for the series.

Mariners seek payback against Red Sox after recent sweep FLM
Three weeks ago, the Boston Red Sox swept a four-game series against the visiting Seattle Mariners.
The teams will meet again Friday night in Seattle.
Remarkably, that series wasn't rock bottom for the Mariners.
They came home and lost two of three games to Oakland, dropping behind the rebuilding Athletics and into the American League West cellar.
A day off let the hurt linger a bit.
Since then, Seattle has gone 8-4. In the past four series, the Mariners won two of three against the division-leading Houston Astros (twice), the Baltimore Orioles and the Texas Rangers.
Seattle went 6-3 on its just-completed trip, capped by a 6-3 victory against the Astros on Wednesday in which Cal Raleigh and Ty France homered and Logan Gilbert pitched six quality innings.
"We played well defensively, we got big hits and a heck of a road trip," Mariners manager Scott Servais said postgame. "I am really ecstatic we've won four series in a row and we are moving the ball in the right direction. We're still chipping away and we've still got work to do, but we did exactly what we needed to do on this trip."
The Red Sox have remained hot since sweeping Seattle, though they had a seven-game winning streak snapped with a 5-2 loss to the Los Angeles Angels on Thursday in Anaheim, Calif. Shohei Ohtani hit a two-run homer and pitched seven innings of one-run ball to help the Angels end their 14-game losing streak.
"Obviously, to see him hit a home run while he's going out there for seven innings, that's impressive," Red Sox manager Alex Cora said of Ohtani, "and that's why I keep saying he's the best athlete in the world."
The previous Red Sox-Mariners series marked the awakening of Boston second baseman Trevor Story.
Story, who was courted by the Mariners in the offseason before signing as a free agent with Boston, entered that series batting .205 with two homers and 16 RBIs.
By the end of the weekend, his average was up to .226, and he had seven homers and 29 RBIs.
"Baseball is the most challenging sport in the world. I feel like on an everyday basis, you're going to be challenged, especially here," Story said after going 4-for-4 with three homers and seven RBIs in the opener against Seattle on May 19. "It's something that I take a lot of pride in -- trying to be very even-keeled about it all. I just believe that the hard work pays off eventually, but yeah, (slumps are) always very challenging.
"You just grind every day, and when you go out there and play, you just let it rip, and hopefully the stuff you're working on clicks."
In Friday's opener of a three-game series, Red Sox left-hander Rich Hill (2-3, 4.40 ERA) is scheduled to match up against Mariners lefty Marco Gonzales (3-6, 3.59).
Hill is 4-0 with a 3.30 ERA in 14 career appearances against Seattle, including seven starts. He lasted just two innings against the Mariners on May 19, allowing four runs on six hits, but was bailed out by Story's big night.
Gonzales lost each of his past two outings despite making quality starts each time. He is 1-2 with a 5.48 ERA in four career starts against Boston.

Real happy so far with the road trip I figured the Ohtani game would be the tough one and it was really want to win the series in Seattle then head home, off day then we got Oakland, Cardinals, Tigers then the Guardians and then end June, and into the July we go back into the division with Jays (no Houck or Sale), sprinkled with a trip to Wrigley.
keep winning series, and figure out the roles in the bullpen, cuz it is the achilles heel right now.

Boston Red Sox make 4 roster moves: Garrett Whitlock (hip) to IL, Rob Refsnyder selected Updated: Jun. 10, 2022, 9:27 p.m. | Published: Jun. 10, 2022, 9:26 p.m.
By Christopher Smith | csmith@masslive.com
SEATTLE — The Red Sox made four roster moves before Friday’s game against the Mariners here at T-Mobile Park.
They placed Garrett Whitlock on the 15-day injured list with right hip inflammation retroactive to June 9.
Boston selected Rob Refsnyder onto the 40-man roster. He will start in right field and lead off vs. the Mariners here Friday. First pitch is at 10:10 p.m.
Reliever Phillips Valdez has taken Whitlock’s spot on the active roster.
The Red Sox designated Jonathan Araúz for assignment to make room on the 40-man roster for Refsnyder.
Red Sox need a starter for Sunday
Whitlock was scheduled to start Sunday. So the Red Sox will need to name another starter. Red Sox manager Alex Cora pointed out that top prospect Brayan Bello isn’t an option because he pitched for Triple-A Worcester earlier today.
“It all depends what we do,” manager Alex Cora said. “Obviously we can go bullpen day. Let’s see how it goes today. Let’s put it that way.”
Cora said Whitlock was “moving a little bit slowly today.”
Refsnyder joins team for his second stint this season
The 31-year-old Refsnyder played in three games earlier this season for the Red Sox, going 2-for-5 with two doubles, one RBI and one walk.
The right-handed hitter has played well for Triple-A Worcester this season. He’s batting .306 with a .429 on-base percentage, .524 slugging percentage, .952 OPS, six homers, 14 doubles, 31 runs and 28 RBIs in 42 games (182 plate appearances).

Red Sox injury updates: Nathan Eovaldi returns to Boston to be checked out by team doctors; James Paxton to throw bullpen Saturday Updated: Jun. 10, 2022, 10:41 p.m. | Published: Jun. 10, 2022, 10:37 p.m.
By Christopher Smith | csmith@masslive.com
SEATTLE — Nathan Eovaldi is not with the Boston Red Sox here in Seattle this weekend. He has returned to Boston to be checked out.
Eovaldi is dealing with right hip tightness that likely caused the sizable drop in his velocity against the Angels on Wednesday in Anaheim. His four-seam fastball averaged 94 mph compared to 96.7 mph in his first 11 starts, per Baseball Savant.
Eovaldi said he first experienced the tightness Tuesday morning. His hip felt tighter as Wednesday’s game progressed.
“We flew him there just to see our doctors,” manager Alex Cora said here at T-Mobile Park.
Head athletic trainer Brad Pearson flew from Fort Myers to Boston and so he will meet with Eovaldi as well.
“He’s still expected to make his next start on Tuesday,” Cora said.
Paxton to throw bullpen Saturday
James Paxton will throw a bullpen session Saturday here at T-Mobile Park.
“Which is great,” Cora said.
Paxton is returning from Tommy John surgery he underwent in April 2021. He was throwing bullpen sessions in April but he faced a setback when he experienced posterior elbow soreness last month.
He resumed throwing May 18.
Verdugo not in lineup Friday
Alex Verdugo is not playing Friday. Franchy Cordero is in left field instead.
“He banged his knee yesterday in that play in left-center,” Cora said. “So just stay away from him today.”

J.D. Martinez, Bobby Dalbec homer, Boston Red Sox beat Mariners to improve to 7-1 on road trip Updated: Jun. 11, 2022, 2:00 a.m. | Published: Jun. 11, 2022, 1:59 a.m.
By Christopher Smith | csmith@masslive.com
SEATTLE — J.D. Martinez and Bobby Dalbec homered to lead the Boston Red Sox to a 4-3 win over the Seattle Mariners here at T-Mobile Park on Friday.
The Red Sox improved to 5-0 against the Mariners this season. They are 7-1 on their 10-game West Coast road trip.
Bobby Dalbec, a native of Seattle, put the Red Sox ahead 3-2 with a 374-foot solo homer to lead off the seventh inning.
He went 2-for-4. He is 6-for-15 (.400) with a homer, double and five RBIs in his past four games. He’s 13-for-42 (.310) with three homers, two doubles and nine RBIs over his past 14 games.
Martinez ends homer drought
J.D. Martinez joked pregame about how he’s now a slap hitter.
He ended his home run drought with a 422-foot blast to lead off the third inning. It left his bat at 108 mph.
Martinez had gone 92 plate appearances dating back to May 17 without homering.
He still went 29-for-78 (.372) with a .457 on-base percentage, nine doubles and 12 walks during his homer-less stretch.
Boston went ahead 4-2 in the seventh when a run scored on Martinez’d double play.
Red Sox make Gonzales work but score just 2 runs
The Red Sox made Mariners starters Marco Gonzales work hard but they scored just two runs against him.
Boston made Gonzales throw 44 pitches in the first inning alone, but the Sox scored only one run and left the bases loaded that inning.

With Garrett Whitlock on IL, Boston Red Sox need to fill his spot in starting rotation Sunday; but with who? Updated: Jun. 10, 2022, 11:57 p.m. | Published: Jun. 10, 2022, 11:50 p.m.

SEATTLE — The Boston Red Sox placed Garrett Whitlock on the 15-day injured list Friday. He has right hip inflammation.
He was scheduled to start against the Mariners here at T-Mobile Park on Sunday. The Red Sox will need to name another starter or use their bullpen for nine innings.
Manager Alex Cora pointed out that top prospect Brayan Bello isn’t an option because he pitched for Triple-A Worcester earlier in the day Friday.
“Obviously we can go bullpen day,” Cora said here Friday. “Let’s see how it goes today. Let’s put it that way.”
Kutter Crawford is scheduled to start for Triple-A Worcester on Saturday. He’s a candidate.
Connor Seabold just started Thursday in his return from the IL (pectoral strain). He’s not an option.
The WooSox were rained out in Buffalo on Tuesday, which led to a doubleheader Wednesday. Josh Winckowski and Brandon Walter started those two games.
Both Winckowski — who is on the 40-man roster and made a spot start earlier this season — and Walter would be on short rest if they started Sunday.
Winckowski pitched 7 innings and Walter went 6 innings Wednesday. So they likely aren’t candidates.
Worcester is set for a bullpen game of its own Sunday.
So it seems like it will either be Crawford or a Red Sox bullpen game here in Seattle on Sunday.
The 26-year-old Crawford worked out of Boston’s bullpen for the first month of the season, allowing 10 earned runs in 10 ⅔ innings. He has allowed 11 earned runs in 13 ⅓ innings over four outings (three starts) at Worcester since being optioned there.
